When you remove apps from your home page but leave them on your phone, you can

spotlight search by tapping on the page switcher / search option right above
the dock. I never have to type more than a character or two to get to the app

I just have two home pages now, with only one or two folders. I use them for my

Well, I figured out what the bullet sign meant. In this case when using the
characters in the rotor, using voiceover, it refers to when it comes to the

either placing your finger on it, or using the shortcut. VO will switch to the
default language when reading. Then when I move away from the status bar, it
reverts to whatever language I'm currently using. I've tried uninstalling then

on both my iPad mini 6 and my iPhone 14 pro.

It's not a total disaster, but I'm hoping that Apple will release another

Personally I have 4 widgets on my main home screen.

First, is Fantastical with my calendar and reminders for the day. My problem
with reminders is that I would missthe notification or forget to check the app.
It works best for me if they are in front of me each time I unlock my phone.

Next is the Drafts app, but any notes app will work for me.

next, the batteries widget.

And last is the weather app.

Also know that double tapping on a widget opens the app, so that is one icon
you no longer have to have on your home screen.

I am an extensive user of Dropbox, and there are important files that I might
need to access. The large Dropbox widget puts the top 4 files or folders on
the widget for quick access. I mainly use folders so that way I just put my
important files in the folders, star them, and they show up on the widget. So
when I need to quickly access the information, I just double tap on the folder
on the widget, and the files immediately pop up in front of me, then I access
the one I need. Keeps me from opening the app and having to swipe and navigate
to the folder then file.

At first I did not think I would use widgets because I was not sure how to
implement them to help me find out information more quickly. But after I
started using them, I learned how they can be of help, so I kept adding more.

Everybody is different, but I do think widgets can help everybody if they just
give them a try.

I like Google Maps and the native Maps app, the former slightly more

RE: Apps and Widgets

2024-03-08 Thread paekstrand
Chris,

Thanks for these great explanations. I had never used widgets and am just
trying them out now.

I added the batteries widget on my iPad mini, but I am trying to move it
somewhere else than the top left corner of my home screen. I go through the
normal process of moving an app, and it says “drop complete” , but the widget
doesn’t move.

Any suggestions on where I am going wrong?

Subject: Re: Apps and Widgets

Thanks Chris,

I had figured out some of that, but the stack information is very helpful.

A tip: it is quicker to get to the various choices of widget sizes and so on by
doing a three finger swipe from right to left. As if you were flicking a page
in a physical book. And of course, to go back, three finger swipe left to
right.

I may experiment with stacks once I decide what I want quick access to.

Thanks again,

You can have a widget on any of your home screens. I personally have a widget
stack on the first screen of my home pages, and I have a second stack on the
second screen.

First, before adding a widget, you need to know the different sizes and how
much of the home screen each one will take up. Keep in mind, the smaller the
widget, the less information it can display. there are 3 sizes, they are:

1, small, covers a two by two grid on the home screen.

2, Medium, covers a four by two grid on home screen.

3, Large, covers a four by four grid on home screen.

Now, how to add a widget.

1, On the screen you want to add a widget, flick up on any app and choose edit.

2, In the top left of the screen double tap the add button.

3, Swipe down the list of widgets and choose the app you want to add a widget
from. Please note: The first in the list are just recommendations, I would
swipe on down until you get to where the alphabetical order list starts.

4, After double tapping on the app you want, you are put on the screen where
you can find all of the widgets offered by that app.

5, Its best if you start at the bottom of the widget screen, so do a four
finger single tap near the bottom to jump there.

6, The last thing on the screen is the close button. Now swipe up to the left
until you get to the pages. This is how many different widgets you can choose
from. Now if you swipe one more time up to the left, you will get a
description of the first widget and its size.

6, If you want to see what else is available, or do not want the first choice,
then flick down to the pages, and flick up until it changes to the next number.
Then swipe back up to the description and check it out along with the size.
Keep repeating this until you find the type of widget you want.

7, Once you find the widget you want, just swipe

them all from an equal footing and give them the resources to invest in other
tools as they see fit.

I appreciate the suggestions so far and look forward to others!

However, BlindSquare is $40.
Try GoodMaps Outdoors, it is what used to be Sendero GPS and is free.

Re: Voice Over bug with Rotor Languages and the Status Bar on iOS 17.4

Well, I figured out what the bullet sign meant. In this case when using the characters in the rotor, using voiceover, it refers to when it comes to the clock or displaying time in the lock screen, that symbol is a narrow no break  space.Sent from my iPhoneOn Mar 8, 2024, at 6:39 AM, David Grossoehme wrote:

Hi
All
I've
just installed iOS and iPad OS 17.4 and I've noticed a
really strange bug with rotor languages and the status bar.
When you are using another rotor language, other than the
default, every time you move to the status bar, by either
placing your finger on it, or using the shortcut. VO will
switch to the default language when reading. Then when I
move away from the status bar, it reverts to whatever
language I'm currently using. I've tried uninstalling then
re installing the rotor languages and still the problem
persists. This occurs on both my iPad mini 6 and my iPhone
14 pro.
It's
not a total disaster, but I'm hoping that Apple will release
another update soon, and hopefully the bug will go away.

Cheers
Debbie

What Navigation App Are You Using These Days?

2024-03-08 Thread Joe Orozco
Hello,

What navigation/GPS apps are you using these days?

I tried Lazarillo and didn’t find it as good as I’d remembered when it
first came out. That’s purely subjective. I felt the directions and
general awareness weren’t consistent, but again, just a me thing.

I tried VoiceVista and did not find it quite as good as I’d remembered
SoundScape.

I’m going to keep working with both apps, because I’m convinced it’s
just me quickly opening apps when I need them in the moment and not
necessarily exploring them when I have a little more time to
familiarize myself with the interface.

I like Google Maps and the native Maps app, the former slightly more
for its ability to tell me if the destination is on the left or right,
but I feel as though I have to supplement these with a third party app
to get a more complete experience. In my opinion, nothing compares to
Nearby Explorer, but I’m working with blind students who would ideally
get the right navigation app at little or no cost.

Thank you kindly in advance for your recommendations and explanation
for what makes your navigation app the best one in your opinion.

Thanks,

Joe

Re: Voice Over bug with Rotor Languages and the Status Bar on iOS 17.4

2024-03-08 Thread Chela Robles
I have also noticed a minor bug with voiceover and braille display more specifically when it comes to displaying time in general and not sure if this is a new standard but when I see the time in the clock like the current time, and also on the locked screen, I see for example, 12:34•PM displayed on the braille display. I have the e-reader from Humanware and NLS, and the Humanware Brailliant BI-X-40. Anyone notice this? Usually there is supposed to be a space between the time and whether it's AM or PM. Is this a new braille UEB rule I should take into consideration  or am I crazy? I've never seen time written like that. Sent from my iPhoneOn Mar 8, 2024, at 6:39 AM, David Grossoehme wrote:

When you are using another rotor language, other than the
default, every time you move to the status bar, by either
placing your finger on it, or using the shortcut. VO will
switch to the default language when reading. Then when I
move away from the status bar, it reverts to whatever

It's

I wouldn't do more than use a lint free cloth, like a microfiber cloth and wipe

I know some folks have mini vacuum cleaners they use on their braille displays

Hi Group,

I believe this may have started with the upgrade to IOS 17.3, but I am not
sure. For the past month or so, the audio on my SE 2020 iPhone seems somewhat
muted. This is despite the fact that I have the audio under settings set at 100
percent.

Is there any generic adjustments I could make to get the audio to match my SE
2022 iPhone? Could there be a mechanical reason such as a speaker issue? If so
can you clean the speaker in any safe and effective way?

Any hehlp would be greatly appreciated.

Malcolm, you are a scholar and a gentleman. That is a great bit of radio history, thank you. I don't think it aired here in the states on my local NPR station until somewhere between 1980 and 1983. I tried to get a widget for Weather and ended up only moving Weather to
another place on my Home Page, which is an OK location.

One thing I'd like off my Home Page is Journal, and I would be OK with it

if I'm not careful, when trying to edit apps, more than one will move, if I'm

Thanks Chris,

I had figured out some of that, but the stack information is very helpful.

A tip: it is quicker to get to the various choices of widget sizes and so on by
doing a three finger swipe from right to left. As if you were flicking a page
in a physical book. And of course, to go back, three finger swipe left to
right.

I may experiment with stacks once I decide what I want quick access to.

Thanks again,

Subject: Re: Apps and Widgets

7, Once you find the widget you want, just swipe down and choose the add widget
button near the bottom of the screen.

8, This should add your widget to the home screen, just hit the done button at
the top to get out of edit mode.

A stack of widgets.

If you want more than one widget, the best thing to do is create a widget
stack. This will conserve realistate on your home screen. Here is how I
create or add widgets as a stack.

After placing your first widget where you want it. Now it is time to add one
to it to create a stack.

1, To make things easier and to keep things from getting confusing, go to your
last home screen.

2, Start edit mode, go pick out your next widget, and add it to your last home
screen.

3, After it has been added, it is just like moving an app. flick up on the
widget and choose drag.

3, Go to your first widget, flick up and choose add to stack. This will place
that widget on top of the first widget and create a widget stack.

4, To add more widgets, just repeat the process.

IN a widget stack, how to switch from one to another?

With the widget stack in focus:

Do a 3 finger swipe up to go to the next widget, and a 3 finger down to go to
the previous widget.

I try to add widgets to a stack in the orer I want them, to make it quicker to
find the one I want.

I use widgets on a daily basis, and it can make finding out information a lot
quicker and without having to open the app.

Chris

RE: the books app that comes on an iphone

2024-03-08 Thread Richard Turner
I just updated the User guide in the Books app to the current one and it reads
fine.

Two thoughts.

I always check to make sure that screen recognition is not on.

Then, try rebooting the phone after closing all apps out of the app switcher.

I have normally removed the books app from my phones because I have so many
other sources for books. I decided to look something up about IOS 17.4 and
thought I could do it in this app in the IOS 17.4 user guide. I reinstalled
the app and discovered that when I open the user guide all that VO can see is
the back button. The rest of the screen appears blank.

Has anyone else noticed this? Am I doing something wrong or not doing

Thanks.

Re: Apps and Widgets

2024-03-08 Thread Chris Chaffin
Personally I have 4 widgets on my main home screen.First, is Fantastical with my calendar and reminders for the day.  My problem with reminders is that I would missthe notification or forget to check the app.  It works best for me if they are in front of me each time I unlock my phone.Next is the Drafts app, but any notes app will work for me.next, the batteries widget. And last is the weather app. Also know that double tapping on a widget opens the app, so that is one icon you no longer have to have on your home screen.I am an extensive user of Dropbox, and there are important files that I might need to access.  The large Dropbox widget puts the top 4 files or folders on the widget for quick access.  I mainly use folders so that way I just put my important files in the folders, star them, and they show up on the widget.  So when I need to quickly access the information, I just double tap on the folder on the widget, and the files immediately pop up in front of me, then I access the one I need.  Keeps me from opening the app and having to swipe and navigate to the folder then file.At first I did not think I would use widgets because I was not sure how to implement them to help me find out information more quickly.  But after I started using them, I learned how they can be of help, so I kept adding more.Everybody is different, but I do think widgets can help everybody if they just give them a try.ChrisOn Mar 8, 2024, at 9:06 AM, Richard Turner wrote:Thanks Chris,I had figured out some of that, but the stack information is very helpful.A tip: it is quicker to get to the various choices of widget sizes and so on by doing a three finger swipe from right to left.  As if you were flicking a page in a physical book.  And of course, to go back, three finger swipe left to right. I may experiment with stacks once I decide what I want quick access to. Thanks again,  Richard, USA"At the moment of commitment, the universe conspires to assist you." -- Wolfgang Von Goethe  My web site: https://www.turner42.com/ Microsoft Windows Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3155) JAWS version 2024.2403.3  From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Chris ChaffinSent: Friday, March 8, 2024 5:59 AMTo: viphone@googlegroups.comSubject: Re: Apps and Widgets  You can have a widget on any of your home screens.  I personally have a widget stack on the first screen of my home pages, and I have a second stack on the second screen.  First, before adding a widget, you need to know the different sizes and how much of the home screen each one will take up.  Keep in mind, the smaller the widget, the less information it can display.  there are 3 sizes, they are: 1, small, covers a two by two grid on the home screen.2, Medium, covers a four by two grid on home screen.3, Large, covers a four by four grid on home screen. Now, how to add a widget. 1, On the screen you want to add a widget, flick up on any app and choose edit.2, In the top left of the screen double tap the add button.3, Swipe down the list of widgets and choose the app you want to add a widget from.  Please note:  The first in the list are just recommendations, I would swipe on down until you get to where the alphabetical order list starts.4, After double tapping on the app you want, you are put on the screen where you can find all of the widgets offered by that app.5, Its best if you start at the bottom of the widget screen, so do a four finger single tap near the bottom to jump there.6, The last thing on the screen is the close button.  Now swipe up to the left until you get to the pages.  This is how many different widgets you can choose from.  Now if you swipe one more time up to the left, you will get a description of the first widget and its size.6, If you want to see what else is available, or do not want the first choice, then flick down to the pages, and flick up until it changes to the next number.  Then swipe back up to the description and check it out along with the size.  Keep repeating this until you find the type of widget you want.7, Once you find the widget you want, just swipe down and choose the add widget button near the bottom of the screen.8, This should add your widget to the home screen, just hit the done button at the top to get out of edit mode. A stack of widgets. If you want more than one widget, the best thing to do is create a widget stack.  This will conserve realistate on your home screen.  Here is how I create or add widgets as a stack. After placing your first widget where you want it.  Now it is time to add one to it to create a stack. 1, To make things easier and to keep things from getting confusing, go to your last home screen.2, Start edit mode, go pick out your next widget, and add it to your last home screen.3, After it has been added, it is just like moving an app.  flick up on the widget and choose drag.3, Go to your first widget, flick up and choose add to stack.  This will place that widget on top of the first widget and create a widget stack.4,

Then when I move away from the status bar, it reverts to whatever

It's not a total disaster, but I'm hoping that Apple will release

RE: Apps and Widgets

2024-03-08 Thread Richard Turner
Thanks Chris,

I had figured out some of that, but the stack information is very helpful.

A tip: it is quicker to get to the various choices of widget sizes and so on by
doing a three finger swipe from right to left. As if you were flicking a page
in a physical book. And of course, to go back, three finger swipe left to
right.

I may experiment with stacks once I decide what I want quick access to.

Thanks again,

Subject: Re: Apps and Widgets

Re: Apps and Widgets

2024-03-08 Thread Chris Chaffin
You can have a widget on any of your home screens.  I personally have a widget stack on the first screen of my home pages, and I have a second stack on the second screen.First, before adding a widget, you need to know the different sizes and how much of the home screen each one will take up.  Keep in mind, the smaller the widget, the less information it can display.  there are 3 sizes, they are:1, small, covers a two by two grid on the home screen.2, Medium, covers a four by two grid on home screen.3, Large, covers a four by four grid on home screen. Now, how to add a widget.1, On the screen you want to add a widget, flick up on any app and choose edit.2, In the top left of the screen double tap the add button.3, Swipe down the list of widgets and choose the app you want to add a widget from. Keep repeating this until you find the type of widget you want.7, Once you find the widget you want, just swipe down and choose the add widget button near the bottom of the screen.8, This should add your widget to the home screen, just hit the done button at the top to get out of edit mode.A stack of widgets. If you want more than one widget, the best thing to do is create a widget stack.  This will conserve realistate on your home screen.  Here is how I create or add widgets as a stack. After placing your first widget where you want it.  Now it is time to add one to it to create a stack.1, To make things easier and to keep things from getting confusing, go to your last home screen.2, Start edit mode, go pick out your next widget, and add it to your last home screen.3, After it has been added, it is just like moving an app.  flick up on the widget and choose drag.3, Go to your first widget, flick up and choose add to stack.  This will place that widget on top of the first widget and create a widget stack.4, To add more widgets, just repeat the process.IN a widget stack, how to switch from one to another? With the widget stack in focus:Do a 3 finger swipe up to go to the next widget, and a 3 finger down to go to the previous widget.I try to add widgets to a stack in the orer I want them, to make it quicker to find the one I want.I use widgets on a daily basis, and it can make finding out information a lot quicker and without having to open the app.ChrisOn Mar 7, 2024, at 11:18 PM, Richard Turner wrote:I wanted to add a Widget to my last page, but nothing worked.Do they have to be on the home page?I got the Weather Widget info which had 6 pages.Double tapping on any of those did nothing. There was a done button, but no widget showed up.iPhone 13 Pro.  Richard, USA"At the moment of commitment, the universe conspires to assist you." -- Wolfgang Von Goethe  My web site: https://www.turner42.com/ Microsoft Windows Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3155) JAWS version 2024.2403.3  From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Mario EilandSent: Thursday, March 7, 2024 4:52 PMTo: viphone@googlegroups.comSubject: RE: Apps and Widgets You get announcements such as it will start raining in 15 minutes at your location.  From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Christopher ChaltainSent: Thursday, March 7, 2024 4:30 PMTo: viphone@googlegroups.comSubject: RE: Apps and Widgets You can also get into edit mode by just flicking down once and double tapping. I have the weather widget in a stacked widget, and I hear “74 degrees, cloudy, high of 74 degrees, low of 64 degrees” when I touch the app, so I think Mario is right, and that’s what you need. I’m also wondering what you get when you turn on badges in the notifications for the weather app. --Christopher (AKA CJ) =>÷Chaltain at Outlook, USA From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Mario EilandSent: Thursday, March 7, 2024 5:40 PMTo: viphone@googlegroups.comSubject: RE: Apps and Widgets HI Jim,If I remember correctly widgets were an option we could have on or turned off when we first set up our iPhones. The only widget I use is the battery one. It gives me the current battery level
of my watch, phone and whatever head set I’m using.

To each his own, I suppose. As a total I prefer not to mess with widgets,
because they can become confusing for me. I had been having trouble discerning
whether I was in the widget or the actual app, both on the 8 Pluse I used to
have and the 15 Pro I have now.

The Weather app was a particularly bad situation, because I could not tell that
what I thought was a set of focus issues was actually being in the widget.
Apple Accessibility could not tell me that was the problem; I had to discover
it accidentally. So I deleted the widgets I unknowingly had, and things got
considerably better.

HI Jim,

If I remember correctly widgets were an option we could have on or turned off
when we first set up our iPhones. If that’s something you want back such as the
weather widget, then try the following.

Double tap twice and hold on the second tap and you will hear couple of tones
and VoiceOver will announce “start Editing.” Scroll to the top and you will
find an option to add a widget. Double tap on that and you will see a list of
widgets you can add and one of those is the weather widget. That should give
you a good start.

Good afternoon,

I have an inquiry, so please bear with me, because I’m uncertain about some
things.

When I received a new work iPhone, one thing I noticed was that when I’d put my
finger on the Weather app, it would not just say “Weather”, but it would also
give me the location and other information, such as temperatures and whether or
not rain was expected. My own personal phone doesn’t do that when I touch the
weather app. I have to go into it and then read about my location and
temperature and such. Much more swiping.

I’d love to be able to have my weather app speak those things on my personal
iPhone as well.

It’s the same with the calendar app on my work iPhone. I’ll touch it, and it
will give me the date, and then I swipe to the right, and it lets me know if I
have any appointments or events.

I’ve looked at things like settings in both apps, which really didn’t do me
much good. Then, someone asked if I had widgets on my screen for these apps,
and I had no idea what that meant. So, I thought I’d ask.

1. What’s a widget?
2. How can I make the weather app or widget speak my location’s
temperature and relevant information by just simply touching it without
actually getting into it?
3. How can I get my calendar to automatically let me know if I have any
appointments or events without always getting into it?

If these things are being done on my Work iPhone, which is a 12, I would
imagine they can be done on a 15 Pro.

Thanks for any information.

I’m also going to see if there are any AppleVis tutorials on whatever widgets
are.

Jim
