RE: Going no-mail while on vacation

Thanks Sieghard, this is very helpful… And yes, I use a PC with JAWS 16, so
your test run is appreciated. The web environment looks a little weird, and
this is somewhat convoluted, but at least there’s a way.

Thanks again,

Hi Brian,

After you go to http://groups.google.com/group/viphone and sign in, use the
button quick nav key “b” and find the “My Settings” button menu. Press enter
and you should be able to select from a pop-up menu, the option you want is to
Edit your email subscription options (this may not be exactly what it says, but
it’s close. Once this comes up, the options are at the very bottom of the
screen, you could go all the way to the end and then arrow up. You will find a
button menu which says something like “Notify me abut every email (about 100
per day). Activate this with the enter key and you will have 4 choices:

Don’t notify me by email

Notify me about every email (100 per day)

Send daily updates

Send combined updates (about 25 messages per email

Once again, this is rephrased since I didn’t want to take the time to copy
exactly each item (done it many times before *smile*), but what you want is of
course clear, it’s the “Don’t notify me” option.

You don’t say if you use a PC or Mac and, if PC, what browser and screenreaer,
but I did just quicly sign in with Internet Explorer and Jaws 16 and this is
all pretty accessible right now.

Regards,

Sieghard

Good morning,

I really do apologize for asking such a simple question, but I’ve gone to the
Google-Groups page to try and adjust my subscription to this and the MAC
listserv and all I see is “leave this group,” and not a no-mail/vacation
option.

How does one suspend a subscription to this listserv without leaving it
entirely?

Many thanks!

RE: Apple Music review

2015-07-02 Thread BrianMiller
I had this very thing happen to me… Somehow iCloud music library got engaged
and my entire library of ripped music got hijacked and disassembled and
disaggregated and otherwise entirely messed up… I have tens of thousands of
songs I ripped from CDs and stored on my external harddrive, and all my folders
were messed up, songs missing, artwork, missing, things renamed, things
deleted, replaced, and all manner of havoc. I spent years building and
organizing my library only to have it totally screwed up. I can’t even begin
to think of what I’ve lost.

One thing I have heard that is quite dismaying is that when you turn on iCloud
Music Library, your library can get messed up. People have said that albums
were split into two separate albums, that artwork was messed up, and other not
nice things. Someone even said that iTunes had deleted their songs, and replace
them with ones that had DRM. On hearing all these not great comments about
iCloud Music Library, I plan to avoid it for a while until Apple gets their
crap together. They seem to have problems with cloud stuff. I heard that iCloud
Drive had issues as well. I don't know what they are/were, but when I heard
that, especially from the developer of Voice Dream Reader, I planned to avoid
that, as well.

I just used Curb tonight, and it didn't automatically calculate the fare, but I

I use curb as well. The fair is automatically calculated. The tip amount
defaults to twenty percent but you can change that. All that said, I can
certainly understand wanting to simply do cash. You have more control over
what happens.

RE: Taxi Magic (now Curb)

2015-01-14 Thread BrianMiller
I've had excellent success with the app and the service. I also use Uber and
Lyft, and like those apps and services as well.

I think the quality of your experience with Curb will depend on the quality of
the taxi service in your area. Where I live, there are tons and tons of cabs,
so I never have a problem getting a ride, but this is obviously not the case
everywhere.

Results will vary, as we are often told! *smile*

Has anyone used this app. The app seems accessible, but what I wonder about is
the reliability of the service.

It is meant to be able to summon or schedule a taxi. Locally, my option is
Yellow Cab.

Lyft has suspended service in Columbus, leaving many of us in the lurch. I am
wondering if I can trust this company to show up when I schedule them. I have
not had much good service from the local Yellow Cab, and maybe it depends on
the individual operators.

Just wanting any experiences.

The advantage of having a photo is that the driver can easily recognize you

A suggestion for those about to sign up, Lyft does ask for a photo. I had one
taken of me holding my white cane, so hopefully drivers would know to look for
a blind person and bus identify themselves.

I do this with dictation. confirm the address the app found in its mapping
database if it is correct. I took a Lyft ride home from work last week when my
white cane broke and I didn't have a spare. I was picked up in six minutes in
a Cadillac by a 21 year old driver from the neighborhood who had been driving
for Lyft for just two weeks. He was mindlessly going to hop on two expressways
during a Chicago rush hour to take me home. He was following directions
presented in Apple Maps. if we did that, my travel time would have doubled.
Fortunately, we did not and used city streets.

as to service area, e-mail Lyft and explain you are blind and cannot visually
see the coverage map. Ask the company to describe its service area in your
city.

RE: KNFB Reader, First Impressions

2014-09-20 Thread BrianMiller
Thanks Sieghard… I use the two-finger double-tap all the time in other
contexts, though… It’s like there are two layers of activity going on at the
same time… One layer is the text being read to me, and the other layer is the
app elements. I can flick right and left and find a play/pause button, or a
next and back button, but it absolutely will not respond to a two-finger
double-tap. Is there a setting I need to toggle to make this work?

Thanks,

Hi Brian,

First of all, in my opinion KNFB Reader is not designed to read a 300 page book
by doing free-hand scans of each page or even double page. If you are indeed
scanning entire bvooks I think a flatbed scanner is still the way to go.

As far as using a 2-finger double tap to stop and start reading that does work
for me. I suspect you don’t do the gesture quite correctly. If Voiceover tells
you what is on the screen maybe it is just registering as a single 2-finger tap.

I find it easiest to hold the phone with one hand and to use the other to do my
tapping. Having tilt feedback on I think works great and I occasionally use the
field of view report. Fortunately I find it not too difficult to hold the phne
level and usually within 5 degrees skew which doesn’t seem to effect the scan
quality very much if at all. I guess everybody is different here just as people
use different methods to hold the phone and type, it is something we all have
to figure out for ourselves.

Sieghard

Subject: RE: KNFB Reader, First Impressions

I just purchased the KNFB reader app this morning and have experimented a
little bit with it… I scanned some food packages and some loose pages and a
number of pages of a book, and I think there is a lot of potential with this
app, but a few things I either haven’t figured out how to manage, or that need
fixing…

1.For example, I can’t figure out how to get the app to stop reading a
scan without tapping the play/pause button… In the Applevis podcast, Michael
Hinksen is able to stop it from reading with a two finger double-tap, just like
it were voice over. However, it won’t do this when I try it, and in fact I
just get voice over telling me what’s on the screen and the other voice reading
in the background, which is rather confusing and kind of annoying.

2.I can’t seem to scan more than one page at a time without erasing or
saving the page I’ve scanned – if I hit the back button to go out to the main
page with the take picture button, it asks if I want to save the document; if I
don’t it erases it, which is fine, but this seems like lots of steps… I’d like
to be able to take picture after picture until I’m ready to save or erase…
Maybe I can do this under batch scanning? But then will it ask me to save or
create a document? I don’t always want to create a document if I’m just playing
around.

3.It’s kind of tricky to hold the phone, line it up, and tap the screen
to take a picture or get a field report… I tried the method that is described
in the AppleVIS podcast, i.e., holding the phone with both hands, arms on a
table, but then it’s hard to do this without covering the speaker at the end of
the phone, making it hard to hear; or, to tap the screen to get it to do what I
want it to.

4. If I toggle voice over off and then on again, the buttons will no
longer respond to a double-tap… I can read the screen, but the app will no
longer respond… I have to close the app and reopen it.

I should add I am using an iPhone 5, with IOS7.

I think it would be quite a challenge to scan an entire book without a
standscan pro to hold the phone… It’s hard to hold the page of a book flat,
line up the shot, and then get a good pic that reads it correctly with minimal
errors.

I think this is a big step forward, and the quality of the scans is generally
superior, but there is still work to be done here… And of course I’m still
learning and practicing how to use the app effectively… No doubt things will
get easier in time, and the app will be tweaked to make improvements..

Thanks,

Brian Miller

picture possible and while the 6 and 6 Plus have a new sensor with slightly
larger pixel size, it is still an 8 MP camera and much the same as on a 5S.

Hello Jonathan,

Your first impressions of the KNFB app is encouraging. At this time, I'm going
to have to be on the sidelines until I decide on which iPhone 6 I will
purchase. This is my question to this thread. For those who invest in the KNFB
Reader app and have purchased either an iPhone 6 or 6 plus, it would be
terrific to post on the accuracy of the app in comparison to the phone that
they originally installed the app on. Also, if one can also comment on the use
of the app with the 6 plus in particular because of the optical stabilization.
ANOTHER person read my mind regarding if your use of the app was with the
StandScan or with some other type of stand.

Thanks so much for your first impressions.

Best,

Eileen

I've spent the last half hour or so playing with KNFB Reader on my iPhone 5s. I
couldn't be more impressed.

I read my son's school report, which it got word perfect even when it came to
reading tables. It read a glossy pizza menu fairly well. It read the page of a
book perfectly, and it read a letter I received in the mail. The feedback one
gets via vibration to line up the picture is incredibly helpful. You can use
the field of view report if you need to for even more information about camera
positioning and angle.

And, it's fast. Very fast, between taking a picture and getting speech.

It's early days but this has actually exceeded my expectations. Certainly it's
possible to use other apps, but I've found nothing this simple, fast, or
accurate without any additional aids. Outstanding stuff.

I go caseless. It's the only way! Especially if you want to keep the device
in your pocket - I hate having anything in my pockets, but the iPhone, at
least the 5 and above, is so slender I don't even notice it's there. With a
case, though, it seriously annoys.

I've had two iPhones over the course of the past four years, have never used
a case, even dropped them a few times, and never had any issues as a result.

RE: Jonathan. A very nice, well written book on iOS 8

2014-09-17 Thread BrianMiller
Hi Jonathan,

So when one purchases the book, do you then ship them a hard copy of the
book, or is it sent electronically to the email one enters when checking out
with Pay Pal?

Thanks so much! I look forward to reading the book.

Possible OT: WhatsApp question

2014-05-28 Thread BrianMiller
Hello all,

Does anyone know if when using WhatsApp overseas texting and calling uses the
cellular system, hence incurring international dialing and texting charges? I
have AT&T as my iPhone carrier… I usually get an international texting plan
when traveling overseas, but I thought maybe this time I would use WhatsApp,
but if it doesn’t save me any money, it may be more trouble than it’s worth.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions!

Yes. I've heard many stoeis of drivers refusing to take dogs, and
supposedly they are not bound by the accessibility laws that taxis are,
since they aren't officially taxis governed by the city laws.

Radio apps

2014-03-08 Thread BrianMiller
Hi all,

It's been a little while since I've seen any discussion of favorite radio
apps - I used to use Wunder Radio, but I find it almost useless these days.
Every time I click on a link, it just buffers and buffers and never pulls in
the station.

I remember many were fond of Oo Tunes, but in the app store it doesn't seem
as though it has been updated in a few years. Is this is a good app still?

Are there others people recommend? I basically want a good app to find
stations and listen to them, that's it.

Thanks!

RE: How much space could BARD Mobile be using?

2014-03-01 Thread BrianMiller
Hi,
It would also have to depend on how long the books are you have downloaded
-- if among the 11 books you have the Game of Thrones series, you could chew
up 5 or 6 gigs right there! However, it is unlikely a merely 11 books and a
few mags would chew up that much memory. Most books are 300 to 400 megs at
most.

I checked my storage and it showed BARD Mobile as using twelve gb. However,
I have over a hundred audio books downloaded, so eleven books should not be
taking up so much space.

All I can think of using that much space might be BARD with 11 books and 11
magazines. Does that seem right? Looking in usage on the Touch, I do see a
few apps listed, but they don't seem to add up to that much. I don't have
much more than the native apps on there anyway. Of course, audio and video
are accounted for.

Hello Chris,

Whether it's worth it or not depends on your personal circumstances. If you
can get good results free hand, you probably don't need the StandScan Pro,
but if you struggle with taking good pictures, it's definitely worth it.
After all, the StandScan Pro is considerably cheaper than a flatbed scanner.

I used it today and had no problems scanning over 50 pieces of documents

RE: Dropbox sign in

2014-02-18 Thread BrianMiller
Thanks Don -- I had to tap on the "sign up" part of the screen, then a
series of edit fields as you describe became available, and then I had to
tap back to the sign in... A bit convoluted, but it worked.

Now, any ideas how you can play a wave file/music file through drop box? I
thought I would experiment and see if I could just move some music files
over to my iPhone using Dropbox, but when I tap on the music file it tells
me I can't open that file.

Thanks,

Brian M

I had a similar problem. But once I got to page 4 which is where you do the
signon, there isa button near the bottm of the screen. Tap on that and it
should bring up a screen asking for your first name, last name, userid, and
password.
I did have a little trouble locatingthe button, but it is there.

Sandra, your post is an example of the imaginative and far-reaching messages
I enjoy reading on this list. I am so glad folks are experimenting with the
dictation option. I admit to distrusting it since it often makes errors
which users do not catch through proofreading, and this sometimes makes them
appear careless.
Nevertheless, I agree it is a very worthwhile service. Perhaps more than
any other group, It benefits those who have difficulty typing or cannot do
so at all.

RE: Using an iPhone without a Case

2014-02-04 Thread BrianMiller
Good morning,

As for me, I just don't like the bulk of a case - a caseless iPhone V fits
just perfectly in my pocket, whereas with the case, it if very uncomfortable
for me. So far so good in terms of no trauma or drama. I respect others who
are concerned about protecting what is a rather valuable asset.

Well, I'd like to think I am a careful person when carying an expensive
device with me at all times. I have taken my phone out of my pocket and
thought I had a good grip on it and dropped it on concreet several times
over the last 8 years. I always have mine in an otter box case. I like
taking it out of my case from time to time at home, but I just feel much
safer with a case. To each his own though. Whatever works for you. :

Hi,

As a general rule, I have never put my iPhones in a case. I think they are
so awesomely perfect as they are. I do not put anything in my left pocket
but my phone.

That said, I bought the apple leather case with my iPhone 5s. I still prefer
the phone without a case but as far as cases go, the apple case isn't bad.

Yes, I know I have just given a totally mixed message. I have found that as
a person who is very careful with his technology, a case on an iPhone really
isn't necessary.

grippability as I did to protect it. I also got the bumper as a gift, and
I'm not sure if I would have gotten it for myself.

In the twelve or so years I've carried a smart phone, I've only dropped them
a few times, and only once did I cause any cosmetic damage to the phone. I'm
pretty good at keeping them in pockets or compartments by themselves or
only with objects that aren't going to damage them, like ear buds. I don't
keep them in the same pocket with my keys, coins or pocket knife for
example.

Smart phones are made to be pretty durable, and obviously, they're meant to
be pretty thin and sleek. I just knew I took relatively good care of my
phones, and I realized I was placing this very elegant device in a pretty
cheap plastic or leather case. I just made the conscious decision that I
paid a lot for this phone, and I wanted to enjoy it and not a $20 case.

I'm not criticizing anyone who chooses to use a case for their phone. My
wife is a very different person, and she views her phone as a tool, like a
pen. She doesn't want to have to worry about it, and she wants to be able to
just toss it into her purse or any pocket that's handy. For this reason, she
has a Otter Box case for it.

hear from anyone who has chosen not to use a case. What protective
measures do you take with your phone? For instance, do you put in a
pocket or purse compartment that no other item occupies? Do you try
to avoid using it in crowded areas where the chances of its being
dropped are increased?

Thank you.

TiVo Romeo

2014-01-22 Thread BrianMiller
Good evening all,

Does anyone know if the new TiVo Romeo service is accessible? Apparently
the new TiVo Romeo allows you to watch all your TiVo content on a mobile
device, including the iPhone, and I'd love to know if this is accessible to
us blind or visually impaired iPhone users.

Thanks for any feedback!

RE: BARD and Commercial audio books

2013-12-10 Thread BrianMiller
The app seems to be fixed... I had heaps of troubles over the weekend, and
then yesterday was able to download several books, including "The
Goldfinch," without any issues whatsoever.

Apparently it was only with the mobile app, since I was able to access the
site just fine Sunday on my laptop. However, it has been fixed now and all
is working again.

RE: Experience Descriptive Audio at the Theater with a New iOS App

2013-11-21 Thread BrianMiller
Good morning,
It seems to me the question is what is meant by "subtitles." Here in the U.
S., this means the words at the bottom of the screen that provide the dialog
in English when the film's language is not. If the app offers an audio read
of subtitles under this definition for non-English language films, this
would be a tremendous thing in and of itself... There are lots of such films
I'd love to watch, but unless it's in Spanish, French, or German, I have to
listen to a dubbed version, which I don't like, or have a friend read the
subtitles to me, which is also not ideal, especially for my friend.

Ideally the app would do both -- although how it would provide audio
description and read the subtitles, I'm not sure! But if you could choose
either one, that would be awesome!

Hi,
First at all, i haven't try the app fully to the extend that to get it
playing either AD or Sub Title.
However, when you go to setting, choose your country.
So far, about 15 minutes ago, the countries are, France, Australia, Ita,
Germany, Spain, UK, US, and Sweden.
The sub title languages that you can select so far are Eng, Germ, Ita,
Fr, Sp and Sw.I guess, it also depending on the ability of the sub title on
that specific language for the sub title for a specific movie as well.
I'm quite surprise that Canada is not on the list. Perhaps, Canadian can
select US, and NZ people can select Australia?
I hope the app will be available for more country and more languages.
Indeed, Chinese will be the next on my wishlist for this app.
It seems there are lots of potential for the app.

RE: problem with voice over and editing emails

2013-11-12 Thread BrianMiller
Hi wrote about this issue late last week as well, and I am still having this
problem.

And I also am using a BT keyboard with the phone flat on a desk and I'm not
touching it at all.

More fun with IOS7 I suppose, but it's very frustrating.

Nope, I don't think so, because when I started to notice it, it was the
first idea that came to my head, I am touching the screen with my other
hand, or my flick is to slow, or something is happening, but after try
several times, and with my phone on the table, is not reason to make an
accidental movement. Any way, I remember that I saw somebody else saying
something like this on the list days ago. I don't remember who was, but I
remember that in that email, the person reported a problem like this. The
focus of voice over jump to the wrong place every time, and is difficult to
type or navigate, on the emails.
Now, could be something with the sencibility of the screen?

For example, if I want to modify a word, and I select with the rotor
characters, and I flick up or down,, some times voice over jumps to another
place of the screen. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but is very hard to
edit an email using the virtual keyboard, or the hand writing feature.
Anybody noticed it with the Ios 7.x?

RE: The Square root of IOS7

2013-11-10 Thread BrianMiller
Hi Billy,

Thanks... Thing is, the phone was doing this before I downloaded any apps...
So unless it's one of the standard off the shelf apps, I can't figure out
how the phone would have this problem before I reloaded some of my third
party apps.

What's frustrating is that the Apple Store guys seem to be out of ideas --
or more to the point, aren't particularly moved by the problem... They
aren't indifferent, exactly, but they simply don't have anything to offer.

RE: The Square root of IOS7

2013-11-10 Thread BrianMiller
Hi Richard,

It is hard to say, as they set up the phone for me in the store. All I know
is that it did it after my Apple ID was used to register the phone... So I
thought about checking to see if this is the problem, but I can't imagine
why the guys at the store wouldn't suggest this as well... And what could it
be in the Apple ID that would cause this trouble? That's the part I can't
figure out.

Plus my wife's phone is doing this as well, and she has her own Apple ID and
has the same problem.

Thanks,

Brian M

Did the phone do this before you added any of your own settings? I mean just
as a factory phone with just VoiceOver on, but no personal settings at all?
exactly which model phone is it?
If it does speak the code stufh without any of your settings, then I'd keep
asking for another phone until you find one that doesn't do that.
If it only starts after you sign in with your Apple ID, or setup your mail,
etc. then it is clear that there is a problem with your account.
sounds like a royal pain ...

So both our phones have been fully reset like new, and in my case I got a
brand new phone, and then I pulled down apps one at a time, being somewhat
more selective in what I chose to reload, and still I get the same issue.

Very bizarre, quite annoying, and I'm out of ideas. How can this continue
to be a problem? And why my phones an apparently no one else's? It's just
weird.

Thanks for your thoughts, I appreciate that.

Hi Brian,

I agree with others that this issue has to be either a setting or more
likely a corrupted app. I would make sure that you have a backup of your
phone and restore it to the factory defaults. This would involve erasing
everything that is currently on the phone. Try using iOS 7 with no apps
installed and see if the problem is still there. Assuming that it is not, I
would then install apps one at a time. Not from a backup but by
redownloading them either through iCloud or from the app store.

It is very likely that once you have all new copies of the apps, this
problem will be gone. You will have to do this same process with your wife's
phone if it fixes things on yours.

Good luck,

Robert Carter

Hi Richard,

Thanks you for these good tips... Unfortunately trying these tricks did not
solve the particular problem I am having, but it is good advice for when
this phone is actually working properly.

I guess I'm off to the Apple Store for attempt #3 at getting this fixed!

I've seen things where a symbol or two is read very oddly, but nothing like
what you are describing.

Have you checked what the wall paper is in your settings? It almost sounds
like you have some geometric pattern that is confusing VoiceOver.

Also, in settings, general, accessibility, try turning on reduce motion,
which stops the new feature of having the background animated.

For any low-vision users out there, I saw a tip about taking a picture of
something black like the side of a filing cabinet and then making that
picture your wall paper to improve the contrast.
Or, I suppose if one prefers a light background, taking a picture of a blank
sheet of paper would do the same thing.

HTH,
Richard

All,

I continue to have serious problems with my iPhone 5 since I upgraded mine
and my wife's phones to IOS7... The screen appears to be littered with long
strings of symbols, starting with "square root" repeated about a hundred
times, then a long series of other nonsensical symbols.

This happens when I flick around the screen, or go to the top of bottom of
the screen... I get this square root thing... If I flick back and forth a
bit, it then reads me the line I'm looking for, but only with some effort.
This is very intrusive and renders the phone almost useless.

I've been to the Apple Store twice now, and fully restored my phone and set
it up as a new phone... And still I have this issue.

I will go back again to the Apple Store for the third time, but I wanted to
see if anyone else out there has experienced this... Is this just the new
landscape of IOS? Do I have to put up with all this garbage in order to
interact with my screen? Or is there just something wrong with my specific
phone...

Any feedback on this issue would be very much appreciated as this situation
is extremely frustrating. It reminds me of how fragile our spiffy
technology is, and how dependent we are on it when we lose it.

Thank you so much.

Bluetooth keyboard and IOS7

2013-11-05 Thread BrianMiller
Good morning all,

I'm experiencing an iPhone crisis --

I upgraded to IOS7, and all seemed fine. Then I upgraded my wife's iPhone
to IOS7, and all hell broke loose. First, I got a push message asking if I
wanted to input her phone number into my phone, I didn't, but I couldn't
find the decline button because all of a sudden my iPhone is riddled with
these weird artifacts -- I flick right or left and VO keeps saying "square
root, square root, square root" about a dozen times followed by a series of
nonsensical other symbols and numbers.

This is exceedingly obnoxious, but in addition to this, now my Apple
Bluetooth keyboard doesn't work... My phone sees it, but when I try to type
in an edit field, things just go crazy -- Caps lock comes on for no reason,
I can't type more than a character or two before I'm popped out of the text
field and into some nether region that only locking and unlocking the phone
gets me out of. Basically, my Bluetooth keyboard is totally unusable now.

I have an appointment with the Apple Store this afternoon, but I wanted to
check with others here first to see if this has happened to others... Is
this an IOS7 thing? A virus? Some other issue?

Any feedback is welcome, and in great need as my iPhone is in effect useless
at the moment.

With many thanks,

Brian Miller

RE: need some help

2013-08-23 Thread BrianMiller
Hi Becky,

The Bookshare.org app, Read to Go, is brilliant, and has a massive
collection of books, including textbooks.

I understand that the iBook app on the iPhone is very accessible, but you
have to buy the books from this site.

Good luck, and happy reading!
