These questions go beyond discussing the accessibility of the Hulu app

I use Hulu Plus on both my iPhone and iPad. For a while I
experienced issues with Hulu refreshing something on the iPad,
which caused VoiceOver to move focus back to the top of the screen
every ten seconds or so. I sent a note to Hulu support asking if
they could do anything about it. After a few email exchanges
trying to explain the problem, an update came out and the issue
was resolved.

I am able to search for and watch (well, listen to) tv shows, and
movies. I haven't found any of the app to be inaccessible. There
are two buttons that show up on the iPad labeled Left Accordian
and Right accordian which I haven't figured out, but otherwise I
have not found any accessibility issues.

Hope your experience is similar.

Hi Ray,

SIRI is designed to understand natural speech and for certain things
it
is
more forgiving than others. For example, you can tell SIRI any of
the
following and it will do it perfectly:

Set my alarm for 7 AM
Set my alarm for 7 in the morning
Wake me up at 7
I have to get up at 7

However, if you tell it "Wake me up at 7 on Wednesday", for some
reason
it
will tell you that an alarm can't be set for more than 1 day ahead
and
then
it asks if you want to set a Reminder instead.

Reminders are very easy to set and allow for good options. You can
say:

Remind me to Call John on Wednesday at 3 PM
Remind me to take the garbage out at 8 every Tuesday morning - this
will
set
a recurring reminder

You can ask it to calculate stuff, regular arithmetic,
tips/percentages
and
so on.
You can ask it to convert most stuff
You can ask geographical information like "What is the fifth most

Re: Using a Brailliant BI 40 with an iPhone/iPod.

2013-03-10 Thread Rollin Hippler

Hello,

At least with the Brailliant, for any field which is a list of values
(adjustable) command-3 moves down the list and command-6 moves up the
list. When not on an adjustable field, command 3 advances the focus to
the next rotor position and command -6 does the opposite. Command-2-3
selects the next rotor action and command-5-6 goesbackwardthrough the list.

One other helpful set of command keys is command-1-3 activates VoiceOver
help and command-1-2 exits help. When VoiceOver help is active,
pressing any key(s) on the Brailliant describes what that function
does. The spoken text appears momentarily on the braille display, but
it disappears quickly so it is difficult to read.

Hope this is helpful.

Some things that you can do to make the process more efficient if you
want to just use braille:
use the spotlight feature (hit cmd-h from the home screen) to search
for the app that you need.
If you want to search for text within an app, for example safari but
really any hap doubletap the screen three times and you will get the
item choser with an edit field, if you want to cancel the item choser
you have to use the command that emulates the home button (cmd-h).
I am still experimenting with selecting/cutting or copying text while
using a braille display which i believe would be a lot more efficient,
at least for me, then doing it by using the touch screen.
Things that are difficult or that you cant do (to my knowledge) by
just using the braille display):
If you are using a word processor and you have to leave the app and
then go back to it then the vo focus within the document will be lost.
This is not limited to braille display though.
Double tap and hold is one of the gestures already mentioned that you
cannot do, to my knowledge.
Also, if you have a table index and you want to doubletap and hold and
move up and down i dont know how to do this on a braille display.
Furthermore if you have lists that you need to change by swiping up
and down (for example to change a value in the standard iphone alarm
clock) i dont know if you can do this. I have several apps that make
use of this gesture and now have to go to the touchscreen and turn the
speech on.
If anyone has any more tips/suggestions to make more effective use of
your iphone and just braille display this would be greatly appreciated

from a braille display. If you can, please somebody let me know how.
Also, and I suppose obviously, if you need to pair or repair the
display, you need to interact with the touch screen and hear the
speech output to accomplish that task. And some things, like opening
an app whose place you know on the touch screen are more efficient
with touch than with the braille display, simply because you can go
right to the app and double tap it. No sequential arrowing to get
there. None of these things are specific to the TBI-32, which is, in
my opinion, an excellent display that works quite well with the iPhone.

Hi Jim and list,

I use a Brailliant BI32 with my iPhone 4S most of the time. In my
personal opinion, the Brailliant makes it easier to use Safari and I do
not have to rely on the speech output from VoiceOver. There are some web

The Brailliant and iPhone is a great combination.

Hi,

I own a Brailliant BI32. I find it very easy to use. I use it with both an

I find the braille key board to be quiet, however the space bars and control

Overall, I've been very pleased with the Brailliant.

Re: Using older and current iPhones on a cruise

2012-11-04 Thread Rollin Hippler
I recently returned from a cruise and had no problem using my iPhone or
i Pad in airplane mode. As others have indicated you have a few
options, via Settings, you can turn cellular data, wifi and Bluetooth
on/off as you desire. When in a U.S. port you may (but are not
guaranteed) to be able to access your carrier.

One thing to always keep in mind, there are no cell towers at sea, so if
you really want access to the internet, your only option is to use
services (cellular and/or slow wifi) provided by the ship which can be
costly. The cruise lines usually offer wifi packages that save you
some, but IMHO they are still costly.

Before I left I loaded books I wanted to read and music I might want to
listen to onto my devices. While at sea I had time to relax and catch
up on my reading, and learn how to get around some of Voiceovers quirks.

Greetings all. I will be going on a cruise a week from tomorrow and
had some questions about hopefully using my iPhone on the cruise ship.
First off, realizing that cruise ship Internet cafe prices are
expensive, is it possible to use one's iPhone in airplane mode on the
ship when in international waters? I called the cruise company and
they said no, since I'm sure they would rather that I drop money in
the Net cafe rather than using my device's battery. Second, when in
the United States territories, is it possible to opt out of the ship's
wireless network and use my AT&T data plan? I will be traveling from
Galveston, TX to Key West, Florida, for the first leg of the trip.
Then I go out of the country to the Bahamas. Since we won't get to
Florida unil day 3 of the trip, I was hoping that I could use my data
plan to stream some football games on Sunday instead of paying the
ship fees. I suppose what I'm asking is if the area from Texas to
Florida is covered in the AT&T network? I don't imagine myself doing a
lot of streaming, but just looking for another option besides the
ship's costly network. Finally, my soon to be wife will be adopting my
old iPhone 4. Since I have moved my AT&T service from the 4 to the 5,
the iPhone 4 isn't connected to a network. However, it still has the
voice memos app and the camera apps for capturing those special
moments. Might it be possible for us to use the old iPhone in order to
take pictures and make some recordings of our time on the cruise? The
only online connectivity I could imagine would be to backup the photos
to iCloud, but we won't be able to do that until we get back home to
Texas anyway. Any thoughts on any of this would be most appreciated.

Wayne

Re: baum brailliant and iphone

2012-07-16 Thread Rollin Hippler
I also use this display, Brailliant-BI32 and have no problems with it.
The BlueTooth pairing works well as long as the display is switched on
before the phone is unlocked.

There are a few quirks, but it is my understanding that those are common
VoiceOver issues with braille displays in general. Apple seems to be
listening to VO users, hopefully the identified issues will be resolved
soon.

I use my Brailliant with both an iPad and Iphone 4S. When I changed
devices, it is necessary to go through the re-pair process with the
display and device before it works.

Annie, thanks for the suggestion.

I did forward my experience to Apple and received the following response:

Hello,
Thank you for your email. We have forwarded your report on to our
braille team for
additional investigation. If they have a workaround for you we will be
sure to pass

it on to you.

Hopefully this will help.

Hi.

I would like to ask the same, it is an old bug, that works that way with all
braille displays. I would also like it to be solved. The only thing you can do
is to plug a headphone into the minijack on your IPhone, when you can not hear
it when it starts speaking, it is not a really good solution, but I am often
using my phone with braille in situations when the speech is disturbing, and it
must not speak in these situations.

I hope you will report it to apple, I will do the same.

Best regards Annie.
