Having issues with stand scan
Hi list, I am after a bit of help from stand scan users, I just got my stand scan today and got some sighted help to assemble it. I have the pro version, so far I haven't noticed any improvements with my results when using it. When I use prismo in combination with the stand scan I don't even get usable images. When I use text detective with the product I get a mangled version of the stand scans facebook address. Does anyone have any tips for getting better results? as at the moment I am beginning to wonder if I wasted my money on a glorified box. I decided to get it when I read the examples that were posted of very readable crossword book pages. I have never managed to get prismo to work in all the time I have used it, and the only OCR app I have had limited success with is text detective. I am pretty sure my camera on the phone is lined up correctly as I just feel for the little lens circle in the top right corner next to the sleep button. I put it over the hole then feel underneath to check its lined up with the hole. I have the document I am doing test scans with lying directly on the bottom of the box and I try to make sure its lined up with the hole. I have tried turning the document in pretty much all directions with no success apart from the mangled facebook address. The document I am testing with is the little set of instructions that came with stand scan. thanks so much for any help, Alex. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. re: Having issues with stand scan
Hi David, I definitely got the pro version as it plugs in, I also used the viPhone code when getting the product. I must admit when I put the camera on the hole it isn't square along the top of the box, this is because when I put it completely square along the box it doesn't feel like the camera is anywhere near the hole, I have also done tests with the light detector app and have found that I get the highest pitch when I place the phone kind of diagonally across the top of the box. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. re: Having issues with stand scan
Hi Chuck, thanks for your message, I am from the UK so don't know what a US penny is like. I have been trying to keep the lens of the camera completely over the hole, your message suggests that maybe I am going wrong. When I try to put the phone parallel with the edge of the box it feels like the phone is hanging over slightly. I am placing the phone length wise across the box in landscape in other words. a favour to ask, borrow a german Apple ID?
Hi list, like the subject says, I have a favour to ask from anyone who is german on the list, would it be possible to borrow your apple ID? i'm sure everyones first reaction is no way, but my reason for asking is so that I can get a free app from the german app store called hidden apps. This app is one that apple has let through by mistake called hidden apps, and apparently it lets you hide apps on the springboard without a jailbreak. Unfortunately the app seems only available in the german store, and I guess that apple will take this app down very quickly once they find out about it. to read more about it please visit http://www.idownloadblog.com/2013/03/11/hiddenapps/ I have literally spent the past 2 hours trying to create a german ID without success, I know how to get around entering credit card information by selecting to install a free app on the phone then it gives you a none option for credit card information. but the process just isn't liking when I try to enter genuine german addresses and phone numbers of businesses into the address fields. I would appreciate any help, as I guess apple will probably pull this app by tomorrow or soon after. If people want to email me privately my address is alexwallis...@googlemail.com of course I would suggest changing your password before sending me details then changing it back after, and also delete credit card information before giving me them just to be completely safe even though I wouldn't take advantage I like to be careful. I will be very surprised if anyone responds to my email to help, but if you do then thanks in advance but I completely understand why people will probably be very wary of giving information out to me. never mind about previous message, hidden apps has been removed
Hi list, unfortunately I have just noticed on the hidden apps authors twitter he said the app has been taken down by apple, wow that was fast they obviously really didn't like his app. Shame I missed the boat on that app but oh well, guess that's why I will continue to jailbreak to get around apples restrictions. but this app would have been nice to have for when I am not jailbroken. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. information about keyboard for iPhone5
Hi list, I have been keen for some time now to get a keyboard for the iPhone5, I tried the boxwave keyboard buddy case and found it really horrible to use. I contacted nuu last night the company who makes the nuu minikey for the iPhone4s and other models and received the following good news about availability of a version for the iPhone5, pasted below is the e mail I received from them. Hi Alex, MiniKey will start Pre-Ordering in February. Delivery will start at the end of February. We are offering free shipping during the Pre-Order period. I am sorry we haven't updated our blog lately, but we have been updating everything on Facebook. Please follow us on Facebook, but we will try to update our blog more frequently! re: information about keyboard for iPhone5
Hi Sandy, thanks for your reply, is this a stand alone bluetooth keyboard your friend has? Or does it double as a case for the iPhone? I am after a case, because I have limited pocket space and to be honest I really can't be bothered to carry around a keyboard separate to the phone, as my geans are only big enough really for my phone and wallet and its not easy to cram a separate keyboard in as well. I have the previous version of the minikey and found it very good the phone and case fitted together well, so I am looking forward to seeing what there version is like for the 5. Of course if this keyboard your friend has doubles as a case then I will definitely consider it. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. question about copying text from a webpage in safari

audio issues on iPhone5
Hi list, I guess I am rather late to the iPhone5 and IOS6 party, and I am sure this topic has already been covered, but I am experiencing strange audio playback problems on the iPhone5 and am wondering if they are present on other phones running IOS6. The problem is that in some apps, not all but in a few when the app plays audio and VoiceOver tries to speak at the same time the app audio and VoiceOver get in the way of each other and the audio becomes very choppy and broken up til VoiceOver stops talking. I have experienced this problem in zombies run, King of dragon pass and lost cities. Interestingly I haven't experienced the problem at all in the music playing app golden ear when it is playing audio. Does this mean these apps just need updating to take account of apples changes or is this a bug with ios6? I have already written to the authors of king of dragon pass and lost cities, lost cities have responded to me, but no word from the developer of king of dragon pass yet. I was planning to write to the zombies run developer, as the issue is still a big problem even with the update released today, but thought before I write that I will ask the list if we have had any word from apple about the problem. more evidence of vat exemption being allowed
Hi list, just thought any Irish people on list might find an e mail I have been forwarded interesting, It sounds like they are allowing people to obtain products including VoiceOver vat free in Ireland now, and this message indicates it covers people who are blind, deaf, and deaf blind. So it seems like the evidence is mounting that this is allowed if 3 stores in the UK have said this is OK, and now one in Ireland making 4 known ones. I have pasted the forwarded e mail below. As it turned out I got myself a better deal on the iPhone 5 through ebay than if I had gone to my local store, as I got it reduced by more than I would have got it just without the vat, still worth knowing anyway for next year. forwarded message begins below this line I had the opportunity of visiting the Apple store in Belfast yesterday. While there, I discovered that people who are registered as blind, deaf or deaf-blind are entitled to receive VAT exemption on VoiceOver products. That is to say, the Mac range, iPad, iPhone, and iPod range. This does not include any accessories. All you need to do is take some kind of proof if your impairment is not obvious, and complete and sign the VAT exemption form a store staff member will give you. You can then purchase your VoiceOver product there and then. This information was offered to me without my even thinking about asking as I had absolutely no idea Apple products come under VAT exemption. I thought you might like to know. Kind Regards, end of forwarded message I really think that Neel has been given inaccurate information by hmrc and others, as surely if vat exemption wasn't allowed, HMRC would notice if a lot of stores were giving products vat free, one store they might not notice, but 4 or more stores, come on I am sure that would be noticed and stopped if not legal, -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. question about OCR on iPhone 5
Hi list, I am planning to get the iPhone 5, as I have had the chance of a very good deal on the phone. I am just wondering, has anyone tried any of the OCR apps on the 5? in particular I am interested in text detective, but observations on the performance of other apps would be interesting to know about as well. I am interested in if results are better, worse or the same as on the 4s, I mention text detective as like so many of you, text detective is the only app I have got any useful results from. I wonder if the camera on the 5 makes any noticeable difference. Many thanks for any information, Alex. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. re: question about OCR on iPhone 5
Hi list, well, I have never got any useful results with prismo. The reason I go for text detective is because of course it repeatedly scans til it finds text. Prismo is just so fiddly to use, and its extremely frustrating to snap a photo with it, then find out its unusable, and then to have to tap several buttons just to take another photo, If prismo had some sort of repeat scan feature til text is found like text detective, I might be more inclined to keep trying it. Also, of course in prismo several buttons aren't labeled, and over all I just find prismo clunky and unfriendly to use, unlike text detective. The one thing I wish they would add in for the next version is a start scan button to the results screen, as at the moment if you get rubbish for your results you have to find the button to go back, then find the start scan button to have another go. I think it is all about how the paper is positioned, and where the phone is in relation to it, I just keep raising and lowering the phone til I get something useful from it. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. You can by apple products in the UK VAT free if your blind.
Hi list, I just found out something interesting that I didn't know before. If your registered blind in the UK you can by apple products v a t free, so that means you get about 20 percent off. In the case of the iPhone 5 64 gb model this would save you about £140, I assume this applies to all apple products, given that they all include VoiceOver these days. I new about being able to get products specially designed for the visually impaired v a t free, but had no idea this applied to Apple. I rang my local store, and they were aware of this, I heard from someone else that the store in covent garden in London is also aware of this, but the person also said that the store in regents street wasn't aware of it, so it sounds like not all stores know about this, still its definitely worth knowing about. re: You can by apple products in the UK VAT free if your blind.
Hi Neel and list, well I can see you have done thorough research, but my question is why have three separate apple stores told different people that they can by apple products vat free? I would suggest the fact apple includes VoiceOver means they have adapted the product to be useful to the visually impaired. I suggest this issue should be investigated further, as we already know apple stores have mixed training about this, so its quite possible HMRC might be giving out inaccurate information as well. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Information for those wanting to use the original Apple youtube app on ios6
Hi list, I am not running ios6 yet, but just noticed the following entry in cydia that could be of interest to users running ios6 when a jailbreak becomes available. There is an entry on the insanelyi repository someone has grabbed a copy of apples own youtube app that was included in ios6 betas and made it available. I guess this means that once a jailbreak for ios6 becomes available those who want to can install it and get the original apple app back. I may do just that. It looks likely a jailbreak for ios6 will be released at some point in the future, as a tweet was posted last night from someone claiming to have already jailbroken it. question about receiving tweets on the iPhone
Hi list got a question regarding receiving tweets on the iPhone. If I receive tweets on the iPhone, when I am out for example, if I then turn my pc on later and use the qube twitter client, will the same tweets that I received on my phone also be downloaded into the qube? if people want to get around legally bought iBooks drm, write to me off list
Hi list, I am aware the topic of exactly how to get around drm on purchased iBooks is not allowed to be discussed on list. However, I finally managed to do it today, for a book I legally purchased from apple, and it will be the last considering the restrictions they have in place, and the effort involved in getting round them. If people want to know how to do this, please write to me off list and I will be happy to tell you. This method is not to steel content from apple, it simply allows you to use content legally purchased from apple how you want, so for example read epub files on a pc. once again, write to me off list, at alexwallis...@googlemail.com I won't respond on list to anyone, or post the instructions. Also, I have no experience of removing drm from audio content, what I managed today was removal of drm of an epub book purchased from the itunes store that can normally only be read in iBooks on an I device. Please note also, that the book has to have been purchased by you, you can't just use a file of a book that a friend gives you because the method does involve downloading the purchased item from the itunes store and letting itunes authorize your device to view it. hope to hear from anyone who is interested. good news, iPhone 4s downgrade successful
Hi list, just to follow up yesterdays post, I was able to successfully downgrade my iPhone 4s to iOS 5.0.1, the hole process was very painless and took about 20 minutes or so. I would suggest anyone doing this should have there screen echo set to all, just so you can tell the program is still working, as it outputs what its doing at each part of the process. it is now possible to downgrade your a5 i devices
Hi list, in case nobody else has got around to posting this yet, I thought I would pass on the information, that a new version of the tool called redsn0w has just been released. this version offers support for downgrading a5 devices, those being the ipad 2,3 and iPhone 4s. I think the tool can be used to downgrade non a5 devices as well. Please note, that for the downgrade you do need to have saved your shsh blobs for the ios version you want to downgrade to. Also, these blobs are personalised to your phone, so you can't use someone elses if you didn't save them. if you didn't save them, sorry your out of luck, in order to have saved them you would have to have been jail broken. I am going to downgrade now til a new jailbreak is out for 5.1.1, as I did save my blobs. I guess for anyone who did save them and who wants to go back to a much less buggy ios version than 5.1 and above this method will also be useful, as no more unlock or braille display issues if you go back. please follow the below link for more information and instructions. http://is.gd/ZiNCj3 also, you will need both the firmware file for the latest iOS upgrade, and the firmware file for the version you want to downgrade to. There is a link in the blog entry comments where to get the files, when you download them, your web browser will rename them to zip files, so you will need to manually rename them to have the extension .ipsw on the end. Note I would suggest only change the extension, the part after the period, as I have no idea what happens if you rename the file completely. I hope people find the above useful. re: More feedback on speed dots?
Hi list, just to weigh in hear, I have had mine on since getting the 4s in I think november or end of october last year, it has shown no sign of coming off at all, and the dots seem to be standing up quite well to being taken in and out of pockets etc. I have the version with all the dots labeled. Firstly, I didn't get anyone sighted to help me put it on the screen, I used the hole which goes over the home button as a guide and was able to hook it over the button and then just wiggle it slightly to sort lining up out. Interestingly though, when sighted people have looked at my screen, they have commented that the dots are not quite lined up with the icons, as far as I can tell, the protector is on straight, at least the holes that go over the home button and part that you put to your ear seem to be lined up. So if it is on crooked it must be a tiny amount that isn't noticeable by touch, unless of course the screen layout relative to the position of the dots has changed minutely with the 4s. Now, on to usefulness, I have to be honest, I don't really find the protector that useful, the only real reason I keep it on the phone is to keep the screen clean, and I suppose if I wanted to, I could buy a normal clear protector that would serve just as well. I got both models when getting the protector, as I really wasn't sure which one I would need, but the second is still in its unopened packet. The reason I don't find the protector as useful as I thought I might, is mostly because I use a bluetooth keyboard for texting, I just couldn't be bothered to mess around with the virtual keyboard for that, as I moved from a tradition of nokia communicators all of which had physical quwerty keyboards. So I have never learned to text in the traditional way with an ordinary keypad. I also use the bluetooth keyboard for dialing phone numbers from scratch when not on a call. If I have to dial numbers internally on a call, I just take the phone away from my head and flick across the screen to find the one I need on the keypad rather than trying to aim for it in particular. I do find the 4 buttons on the bottom useful for locating the individual icons in the dock, but I think I would manage that quite easily without them. Out of interest, what are the other dots useful for finding that aren't letters? I usually just get by by flicking from control to control, but if the other dots really do help with navigation I may see if I find using them more efficient. the dots I am thinking of that I never use are the row of 3 on the top, with the dot right below the line of 3 on the right hand side with no other dots near it. the end nearest to the sleep wake button. the other dot which I don't use marks the center of the screen. In fact, in all the time I have been using the phone, I have never had any need to particularly find the center of the screen. any feedback on my navigation style is welcome, I suspect most of you reading this will be comparing me to a sighted person who can't touch type and just pecks at the keyboard with two fingers, as I suspect my navigation method of constant flicking is far from efficient. I look forward to any replies, Alex. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. using a bluetooth keyboard to play stem stumper
Hi list, I just bought stem stumper for a bit of light entertainment, and just found something interesting I thought I would share. I found that you can play it with a bluetooth keyboard, using the right and left arrow keys, and a combination of up and down arrows pressed together to select objects. I have found this is a much better way of playing for me than using the touch screen, it actually helps me navigate around much better, and is particularly useful for targeting with the slingshots. The nice thing I also found, is that you seem to be able to adjust your aim when lining the shots up, so lets say you go a stump two far and realize that you don't have to destroy one then you can press the left arrow to go back a space. I hope someone finds the above useful, just thought I would share. Alex. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. question about removing books from itunes quickly
Hi list, I am wondering if anyone might know of a way to remove a hole collection of books from itunes quickly. The problem I have, is that I use iBooks for reading books on the iPhone, where I have all of my books nicely sorted into collections. But, in itunes when I go to where my books are listed, they are not displayed in collections at all, they are just displayed in what seems to me to be a haphazard order, with all my collections mixed up. I want to remove a collection of about 156 books from iBooks, in order to replace it with versions that are much smaller than the pdf files. But in itunes, the 156 books I want to remove are scattered in amongst the books I don't want to remove, meaning that if I have to go and manually delete each book individually from itunes it will be a very long very slow process. If I just remove the collection from iBooks, I think itunes will simply sync the books back on to the phone again when I sync next time. Does anyone have any idea of a solution? I wish it was possible to just copy books normally into iBooks, its such a pain having to use itunes to manage them. is light detector app broken?
Hi list, just wondering, is the light detector app broken? I can't remember the last time I used it, but when I tried to use it just now, I found that when I tapped on it the app didn't open, and I was just left on the home screen, I got the kind of cherp as if the app had opened, but the actual app window didn't come up. The app is running in task switcher, but tapping on it from there doesn't open it either. I have tried deleting the app several times from the phone and resyncing it back to the phone, but this hasn't helped. I am running ios 5.1. Can other 5.1 users please take a look and advise if it might just be a problem with me, or if they also have the same issue. If it is just me I will delete the app completely from itunes and redownload it. Many thanks, Alex. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. question about giving feedback on ILike2Read
Hi list, does anyone know the correct contact details for getting in touch with the author of the ILike2Read app? as I just bought it, and have found a limitation which I think really needs addressing if you plan to use it as a serious book reading app. It looks like that when you copy books over into the documents folder, you can't copy over separate folders containing books and then access them from within the app. The app is only capable of accessing files stored in the documents folder, meaning you can't easily organise your collection into categories or subjects, you are forced to have your books in one place in the documents folder not in sub folders. What I would like would be for the app to have the ability to access sub folders under the documents folder, and for you to be able to access them from the documents list in the app, so it would show you a list of your folders, which you could tap, and then be shown the files in those folders. I guess similar to collections in iBooks, accept iBooks doesn't really store your books in folders you can access easily outside the app. Having said that, I am glad to see ILike2Read doesn't use a fancy database to store its content like iBooks, that will make managing files in the app so much easier. I did go to the support link in the app entry on the app store, but I was taken to a page I think in italian, I found the contact link, but it has several e mail addresses and phone numbers and I have no idea which one to use. re: question about giving feedback on ILike2Read
Hi Eric, I know that, as I have contacted several authors in the past. However, when you try to use the support link in the app description you are taken to this itallian page where all the contact details are also in itallian, and several different people are listed. Also, the author isn't listed as a person for this app, but as some sort of institution. I wonder if this app was someones university project hence the name of the institution. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. question about activation for a new iPhone user
Hi list, wondering if someone might be able to answer a question for me. I have a friend, she has never used an iPhone before, but she is considering getting one and has arranged to get one on trial for a week, which she can return if she doesn't like it. So my question on her behalf is, does she actually need to use itunes to register it and activate it, or could she just take the sim card from her old phone and put it in the new iPhone and use it straight away without creating an apple ID or registering the phone. She is getting the phone I think as new from a shop. Many thanks for any help, Alex. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. question about syncing gmail with iPhone
Hi list, I suspect this is probably a question that has come up lots on list, but can't seem to find anything in the archives. I use imap with my gmail account, I have this account checked for mmail by both thunderbird and my iPhone. My question is, how do I make the mail client on the iPhone download all messages held on the gmail server? at the moment, the client only seems to download new messages, and won't download everything. If I hit the get more messages button, it will download older mail, but obviously this is a time consuming process, and I would rather get the lot in one go. I seem to remember setting some value to download a thousand messages, but the phone is still only grabbing new content. Last question, is there a way to have thunderbird e mail synced automatically to the iPhone?
