Advises Apple on Apps

Deaf-Blind Lawyer Advises Apple on Apps

Haben Girma can't see your app's design. She can't hear the sounds it makes or
listen to a voice-over of the text. But she has some notes.

The first deaf-blind person to graduate from Harvard Law, Girma is on a mission
to get more developers to design software with people with disabilities in
mind. An avid iPhone user, she recently decided to go straight to the source.

In June, Girma gave a talk at Apple's Worldwide Developer conference in San
Francisco. She urged the software makers to change how they design their
applications. Not just to be good people, but because it's a smart business
move. Around 15% of the world's population has some type of disability, and
many of them are eager to pay for an app that they can actually use.

Thanks to a combination of voice-over features, a digital braille reader, and
closed captions, Girma is able to use her smartphone constantly. She can send
texts and emails, check social media, read the news and book flights on Kayak.
She even uses the camera to share photos with friends.

"I try to always have a keyboard, braille display, Apple Watch, iPhone and
guide dog with me at all times, but it doesn't always work out," said the
27-year-old.

She favors the built-in Apple apps, which are designed to be as accessible as
possible. But the millions of third-party apps are hit and miss. Often miss.

Apple (AAPL, Tech30) offers developers tools to make apps more accessible to
the blind, deaf or physically disabled. But there's no requirement they use
them. Finding accessible apps is difficult. Apple curates collections of
accessible apps, but Girma says searching is a long process of trial and error.

Developers shouldn't waste their time making separate apps just for the
disabled, says Girma. Instead, they should design their apps with accessibility
in mind from the start. They can do that by including support for voice over,
larger type, captioning, and things like switch controls and braille displays.

Girma was born in the Bay Area to refugee parents. Her mother is from Eritrea,
her dad from Ethiopia. Now she travels around the world speaking and teaching.
She's met with President Obama and tries to go salsa dancing regularly.

Apple has a ton of built-in accessibility features and is adding more to its
operating system updates this fall. iOS 10 will allow anyone with an iPhone or
iPad to use the camera as a magnifier, and there are new display filters for
various kinds of color blindness.

The Apple Watch is adding support for wheelchair users who want to track their
activity. It's also introducing Taptic Time, which can communicate the time
just though vibrations. (Haptics, or small vibrations, are an exciting new
frontier for accessibility.)

But the next step has to be taken by the companies and people designing their
own games, educational tools, and especially social media apps. Girma's
favorite apps are the ones that bring people together, like Facebook (FB,
Tech30), which she uses regularly. Facebook recently added a tool that uses AI
to analyze images and create a text description for people who can't see them.

Girma says the technology is promising, but it's still a far cry from human
written descriptions. She urges more people to add text when they share photos
or videos, which are then read by screen readers.

So the next time you post a photo on Facebook, add an explanation of that
sunset photo or family portrait. Girma would love it.

HI there,

I usually make karaoke’s with SoundForge or Cooledit. Both have an option to
remove vocals. However, there is a very small evidence of the vocal in a very
distance echo.

Yes thank you that was my issue with youtube as well that you can't download
easily although I do sort of have a way. I will check out bard as _ell. I'm
kind of interested in ways to strip vocals but I suppose that's better done on
a computer if it can be done at all. Many songs I wish to sing are in no way
popular quite sure how available for karaoke they will be.

iTunes has a lot of karaoke backing tracks at a reasonable cost.
YouTube has some too that you can download for free, but I never

YouTube also has videos for singing and piano technique.

Finally, BARD has music courses you can download and train with.

RE: how to stay in portrait mode

2016-05-28 Thread dan Thompson
Here you go.

Locking Orientation:

1. Place the IPhone in Portrait mode/position. (The home button will be
closest to you.)

2. Touch the status bar found at the top of the Iphone Screen.

3. Lift your hand away and flick up with three fingers and you should see or
hear, "control center."

4. Flick with one finger to the right until reaching "lock orientation, off."

5. Tap this button twice and "lock orientation" is on.

. Tap this button twice and "lock orientation" is on.

6. There are two ways to dismiss the control panel.

a. Do a Z scrub.

This is making a Z ontop of itself.

I personally have found making a scrubbing motion with two fingers does the
same thing. It is like rubbing something off the screen in a very small area.
I say this because using the Z scrub did not always work. Scrubbing with two
fingers quickly always works.

Many IOS users do the scrub motion to reduce stress on the home button since
it is used so much.

b. Method two is done by pressing the home button. This is not used as much
as the scrub method as explained above.

2. Swipe with one finger to the right until locating ""wifi." If you missi

tap on the wifi button.
4. Swipe to the right until locating your network.
5. If using VO, tap twice here to select that wifi.
If using no VO, just tap once to choose the wifi selected.
6. If there is a password you must enter it.
7. Locate the "join" button and tap it and you are in.
8. Go up to the top left corner of the phone and locate "setting back button."
Once that button is selected, and you are using VO, lift your finger and tape

If not using VO, just tap the back button to get out of the wifi screen.
10. Press the home button to return to the home screen.

Two things:
1. Edge, the new default browser is only accessible to NVDA beta so people
will have to figure out how to launch IE in Windows 10 for web use 2. Here is
an extremely long review from an accessibility perspective from CoolBlindTech:

If you copied this review into Word it is about 31 pages, but a lot of that is
chatter but it is a good, positive, thorough review with some warnings for
accessibility.

Microsoft Windows 10 review: Microsoft gets it right
By: Nate Ralph
Reviewed: July 28, 2015

The Good:
Windows 10 bridges the gap between PCs and tablets without alienating anyone.
The new OS combines the best bits of old and new Windows features into a
cohesive package, while correcting nearly all of the missteps of Windows 8. The
upgrade process is mostly painless, and free for most Windows
7 and 8 users.

The Bad:
Many of the new features will be lost on those who don't care about touch.
Automatic, forced updates could spell trouble later on. Cortana's features are
better suited for smartphones.

The Bottom Line:
Windows 10 delivers a refined, vastly improved vision for the future of
computing with an operating system that's equally at home on tablets and
traditional PCs -- and it's a free upgrade for most users.

Windows 10 is the Goldilocks version of Microsoft's venerable PC operating
system -- a "just right" compromise between the familiar dependability of
Windows 7, and the forward-looking touchscreen vision of Windows 8.

This new Windows, available as a free upgrade for existing Windows 7 and
Windows 8 noncorporate users, is built from the ground up to pursue Microsoft's
vision of a unified OS that spans all devices without alienating any one
platform. It's an attempt to safeguard Microsoft's crumbling software hegemony,
assailed on all sides by Google and Apple. And it's a vision of the future as
Microsoft sees it, where a single user experience spans every piece of
technology we touch. Welcome to Windows as a service.

Yes, this new OS is chock-full of fresh features. To name just a few: a lean,
fast Internet Explorer replacement called Edge; Microsoft's Siri-like
voice-controlled virtual assistant, Cortana; and the ability to stream
real-time games to your desktop from an Xbox One in another room. (And in case
you're wondering: there is no "Windows 9" -- Microsoft skipped it, going
straight from 8 to 10.)

But Windows 10 is also the end of a long, awkward road that began with the
release of Windows 8 in 2012, when Microsoft tried to convince a world of
keyboard and mouse wielders that touchscreens were the way to go -- or else.
Ironically, in 2015, the PC hardware for that touchscreen future is now here
-- everything from 2-in-1s such as the Lenovo Yoga line to convertible tablets
with detachable keyboards, like Microsoft's own Surface. And Windows
10 smoothly lets users transition from "tablet" to "PC" mode on such devices
like never before.

For the rest of the PC universe -- including those who still prefer good
old-fashioned keyboard and mouse navigation -- Windows 10 is a welcome return
to form. The Start menu, inexplicably yanked from 8, is back and working the
way you expect it to. Those live tiles from the Windows 8 home screen still
exist, but they've been attached to the Start menu, where they make a lot more
sense. And the fiendishly hidden Charms bar has been morphed into the more
straightforward (and easier to find) Action Center.

As always, there are some quibbles and gripes with the end product, but
all-in-all -- after living with Windows 10 for months -- I can say it's a
winner. It's flexible, adaptable and customizable. And it's been battle-tested
by an army of beta testers for the better part of a year, making it one of the
most robust operating system rollouts in recent memory.

A fresh Start
The Start menu is back; it's almost funny how relieving that is. That humble
Start button has been a fixture on the lower left corner of th

Hi All,

Main features setting Viskey apart from other third party keyboards and Apple
keyboard:

* Text preview with adjustable size for all text fields.
* Cursor keys, double tap to move by word.
* Good contrast and large bold font for the keys.

I'm the author of both Viskey and MBraille. If you know braille, you are
probably better off with the latter.
Viskey aims to be somewhat of a cross-over product, having features both
sighted and low vision users
appreciate.

Student Develops An App That's Like Uber For Disabled People

Despite federal laws mandating accessibility, city life can be difficult for
people with disabilities. The rules aren't
always enforced, and come with their own problems. For example, in New York
City, the
Access-A-Ride paratransit service for disabled citizens requires people to go
through a lengthy application process, reservations up to two days in advance,
and can only promise to arrive within 30 minutes of the scheduled time. This
scenario presents myriad probems, especially when it comes to scheduling.

For SVA grad Meghan Lazier's MFA thesis project in the
Design for Social Innovation department, she
created an app, Alert-A-Ride, that acts as
a kind of Uber for accessible rides. The app prototype allows riders to track
their vehicle on a map and to set proximity-based alerts, giving them a clear
idea of how far away their rides are. It will even log trip histories, making
it easier to accessing frequent address.

The app itself has a yellow and black color scheme that are not only the colors
of a New York taxi, but the high-contrast colors are helpful for visually
impaired people.

NOTE to iOS 8 users: iOS 8 became available for download on Sep 18 2014, and An
"iOS 8" option was added to the list of available operating systems. However,
as of this post, Voiceover-Easy.net has not had time to test with iOS 8. While
the step by step instructions in most lessons should work fine in iOS 8, there
may be some deviations. A notice at the top of each lesson has been added for
iOS 8 users to indicate that iOS 8 verification of the instructions in the
lesson is either, "pending," "verified," or "enhanced," indicating the lesson
has beenupdated with iOS 8 enhancements. If you are using iOS 8, and you

bottom of the page. You, the readers, can greatly speed up the testing process.

*I. Introduction and welcome:
Welcome to VoiceOverEasy.Net!
This website was developed in order to provide a detailed, step by step
tutorial for users of the Voiceover assistive technology found in iPhones and
iPads. This site makes no assumptions that the reader has any previous
knowledge of or experience with iPhones or iPads, and no previous experience
using Voiceover is necessary to begin using these lessons.
There are no pictures or diagrams on this site. All lessons have been developed
using text only.
These lessons are intended to be viewed on a computer while working with your
iPad or iPhone. Trying to perform the exercises on the same device you are
reading the lessons on will be difficult, and would require knowledge of
Voiceover commands which beginners will not have. As an alternative to viewing
these lessons on a computer, each lesson could be printed out in large print or
braille and reviewed with your iPhone or iPad in hand.

*II. About the Web Master.
I have been working in technology for the federal government since 1985. For
most of my career I was a low vision technology user. I used a screen magnifier
and reader, and when smart phones first were available, I used whatever tools
were available for the phone to read the screen and magnify the text.
In 2013 I lost my vision to glaucoma. I found that I had to relearn how to do
almost everything on my computer and smart phone. I soon found that my smart
phone wasn't going to cut it anymore, and I began researching alternatives.
Almost every article I read and every person I spoke to agreed that Apple's
Voiceover technology was the best adaptive technology available. I attended a
one day seminar on the iPhone at the New Jersey Foundation for the Blind and
purchased an iPhone 5 soon after. It worked much better for me than my previous
phone.
I started by reading the user guide. I found that many of the chapters used
figures and diagrams as part of their explanations of the phone's operation.
This made them of limited use for me. I also reviewed the appendix on
Voiceover. It gave a good overview of how to use Voiceover, but it wasn't
designed to cover all the subtile nuances of its use. So I went back to the New
Jersey Foundation for the Blind for a series of workshops on how to use
Voiceover. I found them to be extremely helpful, and I was even able to use
some of my experience in Information Technology to help others as they learned.
As a computer programmer I am a very organized thinker. It's too bad that
doesn't carry over to the rest of my life! I learn by starting with basic
concepts and then building on them. So I began writing notes and organizing
them into basic ideas. Next, I added concepts that built on those ideas. At one
point I realized the notes might be useful for others, and I started developing
this web site.
During my career in Information Technology I have written and taught computer
courses to users of many levels. I have found that it's important that users do
best when they have a good grasp of the concepts that underly the steps they
are doing. It makes them more self sufficient. They are able to figure out what
to do when things go wrong. They are able to apply the concepts in new ways,
and they feel more confident when they understand why things work the way they
do.
Based on this experience VoiceoverEasy.net has been developed so that new terms
and concepts are clearly defined the first time they are introduced, and then
used often for the next several lessons to reinforce them. Also, those of us
who cannot see rely on a high degree of precision in our vocabulary. We are
highly dependent on words. As a result, these lessons build a

Apparently the producer is offshore and the shipping charge is a full $10, even
for this lightweight device. I made my purchase through PayPal and, as far as I
could tell, this shipping charge is not identified prior to purchase. I
certainly could have missed it, but thought I was reviewing the pages

I went to the local apple store and have a play at both the 6 and 6+.

If you put them side by side, the 6 and 6+, 6 feels like an expensive toy
beside the 6+. it makes 5C looks like a plustic model phone, and 5 and 5s,
something in between.

As far as the feel and touch goes, the 6+ is actually very nice to hold on the
hand. I was comparing hat with some other 5.5" phones that i have at the same
time, my right hand was holding the 6+ and my left hand was holding a Lenovo
A850+ 5.5" phones. the lenovo is twice as thic and as heavy as the 6+.

Even though the 6+ seems big, and somewhat harder to hold to start with, but
when you get on to it, it is very comfortable on the hand. no pressure or grip
require. Same with the 6 as well. To put it in more of a context for those that
haven't seen it before, the 6 is a bit feels like the last gen iPod touch.

It is a touch big for my hand, but i can hold and type quite comfortably one
handed on the 6+. I don't consider myself have a big hand, but i do have long
musician fingers.

Beside the size, for $100 extra, you pretty much get a crispier screen for
those that is low vision, definitely better camera, and better battery life.
Although, at this stage, there is no prove on how much longer the battory life
for 6+ will be compare to 6.

Actually in the days of reliable equipment and software in the 60's and
70's, when one baught a piece of equipment or software, it did as expected
according to the advertisements of the company. There was none of the
"llets put out something and have people buy it. Then this brings in more
funds for research to make the device or software work the right way." To
bad the days of truly reliable and working devices/software are gone.
Instead we must buy omething thinking it works and find "oh, no, it might
work with the next few upgrades." Very sad business practices.

Thanks Lucy for sharing this.

This sounds very promising. Reminds me of the OPTACON shrunk down to one
finger size with speech output.

It will be very interesting to see if it comes to market and at what price.

MIT finger device reads to the blind in real time Tuesday - 7/8/2014, 5:06am
ET Associated Press

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) -- Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology are developing an audio reading device to be worn on the index
finger of people whose vision is impaired, giving them affordable and
immediate access to printed words.

The so-called FingerReader, a prototype produced by a 3-D printer, fits like
a ring on the user's finger, equipped with a small camera that scans text. A
synthesized voice reads words aloud, quickly translating books, restaurant
menus and other needed materials for daily living, especially away from home
or office.

Reading is as easy as pointing the finger at text. Special software tracks
the finger movement, identifies words and processes the information. The
device has vibration motors that alert readers when they stray from the
script, said Roy Shilkrot, who is developing the device at the MIT Media
Lab.

For Jerry Berrier, 62, who was born blind, the promise of the FingerReader
is its portability and offer of real-time functionality at school, a
doctor's office and restaurants.

"When I go to the doctor's office, there may be forms that I wanna read
before I sign them," Berrier said.

He said there are other optical character recognition devices on the market
for those with vision impairments, but none that he knows of that will read
in real time.

Berrier manages training and evaluation for a federal program that
distributes technology to low-income people in Massachusetts and Rhode
Island who have lost their sight and hearing. He works from the Perkins
School for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts.

"Everywhere we go, for folks who are sighted, there are things that inform
us about the products that we are about to interact with. I wanna be able to
interact with those same products, regardless of how I have to do it,"

Berrier said.

Pattie Maes, an MIT professor who founded and leads the Fluid Interfaces
research group developing the prototype, says the FingerReader is like
"reading with the tip of your finger and it's a lot more flexible, a lot
more immediate than any solution that they have right now."

Developing the gizmo has taken three years of software coding, experimenting
with various designs and working on feedback from a test group of visually
impaired people. Much work remains before it is ready for the market,
Shilkrot said, including making it work on cellphones.

Shilkrot said developers believe they will be able to affordably market the
FingerReader but he could not yet estimate a price. The potential market
includes some of the 11.2 million people in the United States with vision
impairment, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

Current technology used in homes and offices offers cumbersome scanners that
must process the desired script before it can be read aloud by
character-recognition software installed on a computer or smartphone,
Shilkrot said. The FingerReader would not replace Braille -- the system of
raised dots that form words, interpreted by touch. Instead, Shilkrot said,
the new device would enable users to access a vast number of books and other
materials that are not currently available in Braille.

Developers had to overcome unusual challenges to help people with visual
impairments move their reading fingers along a straight line of printed text
that they could not see. Users also had to be alerted at the beginning and
end of the reading material.

Their solutions? Audio cues in the software that processes information from
the FingerReader and vibration motors in the ring.

The FingerReader can read papers, books, magazines, newspapers, computer
screens and other devices, but it has problems with text on a touch screen,
said Shilkrot.

That's because touching the screen with the tip of the finger would move
text around,

That's because touching the screen with the tip of the finger would move
text around, producing unintended results. Disabling the touch-screen
function eliminates the problem, he said.

Berrier said affordable pricing could make the FingerReader a key tool to
help people with vision impairment integrate into the modern information
economy.

"Any tool that we can get that gives us better access to printed material
helps us to live fuller, richer, more productive lives, Berrier said

RE: How does one use the Bard ap to download books

2014-02-26 Thread dan thompson
Hi Dana, here is some that may help you.
Here is something that may help you.
An In-depth Evaluation of the BARD Mobile App from the National Library Service
for the Blind and Physically Handicapped - AccessWorldFebruary 2014
  AFB AccessWorld ® Magazine
Technology News for People Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired
http://www.afb.org/afbpress/pub.asp?DocID=aw150202

by Aaron Preece
(text of inks inserted by Dan.)

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically
Handicapped (NLS) has released BARD Mobile, an iOS app designed to
play the talking book titles available from the BARD website.
https://nlsbard.loc.gov/login//NLS

These titles are also available, and used to be only available, on
special cartridges designed for the Digital Talking Book Players
produced by the NLS. Now, it's possible to play these titles on iOS
devices.
BARD Mobile has been highly anticipated, since the NLS is the last
of the three major producers of accessible electronic books
(Bookshare and Learning Ally are the others) to make their titles
accessible on iOS devices. For this evaluation, I used an iPhone 4S
running iOS 7.0.4.

*Documentation and Initial Setup
The documentation for BARD Mobile is available online
https://nlsbard.loc.gov/apidocs/BARDMobile.userguide.iOS.current.html

and within the application itself. The guide is thorough, easily
accessible, and well organized, with headings that make for easy
navigation. Almost
every aspect of the application is described in the guide. The only
missing item is the fact that books can be transferred to BARD
Mobile from your computer using iTunes.

When you open the app for the first time, you will be presented
with the BARD Service Agreement screen. The window where the
agreement is displayed does not encompass the entire page but stops
at the bottom
quarter of the page. Below this window, there is an "Agree" button
on the left side of the screen, followed by a "Start" button that is centered
at the very bottom of the screen. To proceed with the
initial setup, you must first activate the "Agree" button, and then
activate the "Start" button. The "Agree" button will be labeled as "Selected"
when it has been successfully activated. If you attempt
to activate the "Start" button first, an alert will appear
instructing you to agree to the agreement before proceeding.
After you have agreed to the Service Agreement, you will be taken
to a Sign In screen. This screen contains a "Back" button in the top left
corner of the screen that will take you back to the agreement.
Next to the "Back" button is a heading labeled "BARD Account";
below this heading is another labeled "Login Information," followed by the user
name and password text fields where you can enter your BARD credentials. At the
very bottom of the page is a "Done" button that stretches the width of the
screen. This button is hidden by the
on-screen keyboard, so in order to see it, make sure to click the
"Done" button on the keyboard itself when you've finished entering
text.

*Acquiring Books: The Get Books Tab
The BARD Mobile home screen is separated into four tabs that are
always displayed at the bottom of the screen for easy access. They
are (left to right): Bookshelf, Get Books, Settings, and Now
Reading. After you have logged into your BARD account, you will be
placed in the Get Books tab, which provides access to the BARD
catalog of digital talking books and braille books. The screen
boasts a simple layout: the various options are arranged in a single column
that extends across the entire screen for easy navigation.
The first item at the top of the screen is the Get Books heading,
followed by an item that opens your Wish List. Following the Wish
List item, there is a heading labeled "Recently Added Titles." Below
this heading are items that display recently added audio books,
audio magazines, braille books, and braille magazines. At the bottom of the
screen there is a heading labeled "BARD website." Below this heading is an item
labeled "Browse BARD," which allows you to
navigate the BARD website. To download books from this screen, they
must either be in your Wish List or in Recently Added Titles; there is not a
standard search function on this screen.
The Wish List and the Recently Added Titles items are nearly
identical in layout. These screens begin with a heading with the
title of the screen and the number of items listed for the giv

First off, congrats on the new 5S. I am currently looking to get one myself,
they are so awesome. I don't know of any good speakers, but the Speeddots
RII mini bluetooth keyboard is also a good option, depending if you want
bigger keys or not.

jawbones jambox will not stay on and looking for the jambox home page for updating

2013-12-12 Thread dan Thompson
Hi All,

My jambox suddently will not stay on even after I left it charging all
night.

When trying to turn the unit un[plugged, nothing happens.

However, when plugged in, the unit will come briefly and shut off again
after a few seconds.

I am thinking the battery maybe went bad. But I wanted to update it first.
So does anyone have the home page for updating or any other ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help.

This week's verse and thought

Psalm 118:24
This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it

Thought:

I sincerely thank God that I rarely deal with
depression. I grew up in a large Italian family that loves to laugh
out loud. I mean, really loud! I have one uncle who laughs so loud that it
used to scare my childhood friends, until I could explain to them, "It's
just the way he laughs." This particular uncle was born with a serious
disability, but he has lived beyond all of his doctor's expectations. No one
expected him to live past 40, but he's in his 80's now and still laughing
out loud.

My favorite teachers in school were the ones who made me laugh. And I
believe I am always eager to learn from my pastor who laces his messages
with humor, because the laughter opens my mind and my heart to receive.

Proverbs 17:22 says, "A merry heart does good, like medicine ..." So, take
some good medicine today and find a reason to rejoice and be glad!

RE: For putting an emergency number icon on the home screen?

2013-11-18 Thread dan Thompson
Thank you for this valuable tip on the app. I am going to get right now.

Verse and Thought:
The Lord is my helper
Hebrews 13:5-6
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have,
for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." So we can
confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to
me?" (ESV)
Inspiring Thought: The Lord is My Helper
In these hard times of extreme economic instability, it's easy to lose
focus, take our eyes off God, and begin to worry about money. But, not only
does the Lord say, "I will never leave you nor forsake you," the wise old
Psalmist observed in Psalm 37:25, "I have never seen the righteous forsaken
or their children begging bread."
If you find yourself fretting today, let this passage infuse you with
confidence in the Lord's ability to take care of you. God is your helper! Do
not fear!

If close enough, You are invited to a time of praise and prayer from 5:00 to
6:00 every Tuesday held in the lounge at First Presbyterian Church 870 W.
College Jacksonville, Il. Come in the double glass doors by day care off
of West Minster. Turn right at the first set of double doors across from
the coat closets. Go up these stairs and turn left at the top.
The lounge door will be opened and welcoming you in to God's open house of
praise and prayer!

Bad news, good news and great news!

Bad news: current version of Voice Dream Reader does not work on iOS 7.
Apple dropped a few things that will break many apps.

Good news: I just submitted a new release to Apple that will support iOS 7.
Hopefully it'll be out in 1 week.

Great news: The new release will make all 36 iOS 7 built-in VoiceOver voices
available in Voice Dream Reader, for free. By the way, in iOS 7, you can
"enhance" any VoiceOver voice. The quality is much better.

But please, do not upgrade to iOS 7 until after you download next release,
2.8.3!

RE: A letter that I wrote to Apple

2013-09-01 Thread dan Thompson
I am very very in support of this request to Apple. It is unbelievable
that a cutting edge company in accessabilty is so resistant. I was amazed
when Apple incorporated voice into their product with no additional charge.
For once the visually impaired community could gain access to computers and
cell phones without buying screenreading software that continuously wants
more money for each upgrade and sometimes with the upgrades sites on the
internet or programs are not totally accessabile. Keep the pushing for this
addition to VoiceOver!! I hope many join your cause.

Verse and inspirational thought for the week

Perfect Peace of Mind

Isaiah 26:3-4
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he
 trusts in
you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.
 (ESV)

This week's Inspiring Thought: Perfect Peace of Mind

Let's pick this verse apart and see what we find. The Lord God keeps (guards
like a strong garrison) in perfect (
 complete,
genuine) peace (inner tranquility) those who maintain their minds stayed
(steadfastly steadied) on him.

No matter what we encounter from the outside, if we trust in the Lord, he
will keep our inner being wrapped in
 complete peace.

Trusting in the Lord is a forever, lifelong, yet moment-to-moment state of
mind that brings a sense of security, stability, wholeness, well-being, and
a rock-like faith in God's faithfulness.

Subject: A letter that I wrote to Apple

Hello,

My name is Adi Kushnir and I am a blind person from Israel.

I want to share with you a letter that I wrote to Apple today, hope that you
will support me and if you have more suggestions on how to reach them, just
let me know.

Keep in mind that I am an iOS 7 beta tester..

Here it goes..

Dear all above,

My name is Adi Kushnir and I am a blind iOS user from Israel.

CC to this email is Eilana Benish, accessibility project manager and a low
vision VoiceOver iOS user.

She works with the ministry of education, and big universities and
accessibility/rehavilitation related organizations.

A specially, she guides Students at the Israeli opened university that are
now in the high education place, and not only blind, but even students with
other disabilities how to use your great stuff.

We are writing to you on behalf of the whole Israeli blind and low vision
community.

We are writing to all of these addresses because we don't know who should we
communicate at Apple, because I always tried to report and explain my
situation to the Apple Accessibility team, and I didn't have any positive
response for 3 years.

We are really lost and don't know who should we pass this email on and how
to cause Apple to listen to this crying and very polite asking for a very
important feature.

Apple always uses the great Vocalizer Expressive speech synthesizer from
Nuance for it's iOS devices.

Until Febuary 2013 there was no voice from Nuance Vocalizer Expressive that
can speak Hebrew, but now there is. Since version 1.1 of this new TTS. The
voice is called Carmit and you can access it from your Nuance Vocalizer
Expressive SDK very easily.

So we are not asking Apple to contract with a third party TTS developer in
Israel - there are 2 of them that develop Hebrew voices that have been
trying to contact Apple at past.

As far as they tell us, atleast one of them, called Almagu with a TTS called
Kolfix that they will make there best for Apple not to adopt the Vocalizer
Expressive Hebrew voice for iOS - we hope that this is not the case.

Just to let you know, Vocalizer Expressive Carmit is being distributed in
Israel for a lot of platforms now, and people (all the blind and low vision
people) think that it's the best Hebrew TTS that was ever developed thanks
to Nuance and there hard work.

They don't want to work with alternatives and they prefer to buy Nuance
only.

I work with an assistive technology company here called Let's Talk, and
people call us each day and ask us "when will the dream will come true and
Apple will adopt carmit to iOS so we can use our devices?"

We can't answer them.

At present, Carmit will be soon released for a Android system voice and we
would not have any other choice then sw

Jesus for you. (ESV)
Today's Inspiring Thought: Give Thanks at All Times
Whenever I've faced challenging circumstances in my life, my natural
tendency has been to question God and his will. I imagine you've done it,
too.
If we're wondering what the will of God is for us in any given situation, of
this one thing we can be certain, he wants us to give thanks—to rejoice. For
the joy of the Lord is our strength. As we remember to give thanks with a
cheerful heart, God fills us with his strength, even in difficult
circumstances.

looking for a seeing eye gps list

2013-07-26 Thread dan Thompson
Hi All,

I tried using Seeing Eye GPs this last week here in Illinois and when going
on a vacation to Austin Texas and had several problems finding POI'S and
setting a route. I am sure it must me. But I don't want o clutter this
list with the specifics. Is there a list available? Thanks for any
guidance in advance.

This week's verse, inspirational thought and prayer:

Proverbs 10:19
When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his
lips is wise

this week's Inspiring Thought: Keep Your Mouth Shut

An easy way to keep yourself from getting into trouble is to simply be
quiet. Especially if you are offended, upset, or

angry-let your words be few and you'll be less apt to say something you'll
regret later. Not only will it keep you out of trouble, silence may lend to
your success in life.

According to the Christian
 Register,
Albert Einstein considered this to be the best formula for success: "If a is
success in life, I should say the formula is a
 equals x
plus y plus z, x being work and y being play."

"And what is z?" inquired the interviewer.

"That," Einstein answered, "is keeping your mouth shut."

Prayer for the work day:

Almighty God, thank Thee
for the job of this day.
May we find gladness in all its toil and difficulty, its pleasure and
success, and even in its failure and sorrow. We would look always away from
ourselves,
and behold the glory and the need of the world that we may have the will and
the strength to bring the gift of gladness to others; that with them we
stand to bear the burden and heat of the day and offer Thee the praise of
work well done.

In the name os Jesus our Lord and Savior, Amen!

seeing eye gps announcing street you pass

2013-07-10 Thread dan Thompson
Hi All,

I baught the Seeing Eye GPs for the 3 year subscription. I When traveling
through a ped route, the street intersections are announced but not all
streets passed. There are some streets on the 18 block walk to school
that don't go all the way through and stop at the street I am traveling
down. For example, when traveling down Southwest, Richards street and
Kentucky street are passed before the main intersection of chambers and
Southwest. How can I set the gps to announce all streets passed? Thanks
for any help.

without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace,
that

we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (ESV)

Subject: The Seeing Eye app, a quick test.

Hi all, I took the Seeing Eye GPS app for a quick walk around my
neighborhood to see how well it performed. I walked about one mile, and took
a different route back. It worked well, although like most GPS apps it
seemed to use a lot of battery, over twenty percent in the one mile walk.
The interface of the app is simple and easy to understand. Entering an
address is made easy because the state and city you are in are already
entered, so only the address number and street need to be entered. If you
are going to another city, however, you will need to change that field. I
started by searching for a point of intrest and starting a route. The app
uses voice over for most of the announcements, but does have another voice
that chimes in occasionally. The directions were clear and given with ample
lead time. As I approached intersections it would announce the street name
and the intersection type, I. E. Fore way, and the street direction. Also,
as I walked the app announced points of intrest as I passed by.
On the way back, I tried the route to home option, which opened a drop down
menu with various options including one that is poorly labeled. My wife told
me it said multi modal, which voice over didn't understand, so I relabeled
this button multi mode.
Over all I think this is a great start, but there are a few things I'd like
to see in the future. I'd like to see the ability to walk a virtual route,
as I was able to do with my human ware Trekker..
After taxes the one year subscription cost over seventy five dollars. It
sounds like a lot, but considering my old Trekker was fifteen hundred
dollars seven years ago, it doesn't seem too expensive.
If you figure it out, it comes to about twenty one cents a day for the one
year subscription. And only about thirteen cents a day with the three year
subscription, it seems reasonable to me.

RE: a small observation about using Siri.

2013-06-18 Thread dan Thompson
Thanks for this awesome tip. I didn't relize there was an edit box there
either.

Verse of the Week and Thought:
1 Peter 4:8
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude
of sins.
Thought:
In one area or another, we're all blind when it comes to our own sin. It's
much more comfortable to look at someone else and point to their
transgressions. Selfish love covers our own sin, while true unconditional
love will look more honestly at our own sin and overlook the offenses of
others.
Where love is in abundance, people are quickly forgiven.
<

Prayer: “O merciful God, fill our hearts, we pray, with the graces of your
Holy Spirit; with love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness,
faithfulness, humility, and self-control. Teach us to love those who hate
us; to pray for those who despitefully use us; that we may be the children
of your love, our Father, who makes the sun to rise on the evil and the
good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. In adversity grant us
grace to be patient; in prosperity keep us humble; may we guard the door of
our lips; may we lightly esteem the pleasures of this world, and thirst
after heavenly things; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  (Prayer of Anselm,
1033-1109 AD)
Psalm 98:1-4
1 O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things!  His
right hand and his holy arm  have gotten him victory.
2 The LORD has made known his victory, he has revealed his vindication in
the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of
Israel.  All the ends of the earth have seen  the victory of our God.
4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous
song and sing praises!

Hi,

For those using Siri: do you ever find that Siri just can't hear a
particular word? For example, i asked Siri to "Translate the word languid
into italian", but Siri could only hear me say "translate the word language
into italian". Now, here's the thing, i never noticed before that when Siri
tells me what i have said, is in an edit field. So, i just doubletapped on
it, and edited "language" into "languid" and voila! it worked. This could
save me a million attempts to get Siri to understand less common words.

Probably, you all knew this, but it was a useful find for me.

RE: iPhone 5 and Braille display question.

Where do you get the New Kid Braille display?

verse of the Week

For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we
can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
   --Ephesians 2:10, NLT

"Lord Jesus, you satisfy the deepest longing of our heart and you feed us
with the finest of wheat (Psalm 81:16). Fill me with gratitude and give me a
generous heart that I may freely share with others what you have given to
me."
Psalm 27:1-4, 11-14
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the
stronghold of my life;  of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evildoers assail me, uttering slanders against me, my adversaries and
foes, they shall stumble and fall.
3 Though a host encamp against me, my heart shall not fear;  though war
arise against me, yet I will be confident.
4 One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after;  that I may
dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty
of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.
11 Teach me your way, O LORD; and lead me on a level path because of my
enemies.
12 Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have
risen against me, and they breathe out violence.
13 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the
living!
14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage;  yes, wait
for the LORD!

Hi,
I use a new kid on the block with my iphone very successfully, the Seika
Mini braille display. I was looking for something small and lightweight
which I could take out and about, so I chose that one. It's only 16 cells
but I'm pleased with the quality of the braille. It's not too sharp which
some braille displays can be. It works well with the iphone too.
Take care,
Cokes.

RE: iPad tutorial

2013-05-22 Thread dan Thompson
You are very welcome!

verse of the Week

National Braille Press just put out an iPad book. It's geared to sighted

helpful. Go to

www.nbp.org

and search for iPad on the main page to find it. They also put out a book of
raised drawings of iPad screens, which might be helpful.

MacBook Air basic needed

2013-05-16 Thread dan Thompson
Hi All,

I baught a MacBook Air around September and never took the plunge to start
learning it. I have an IPhone 4s and have worked quite a bit with the IPad.

However, I need some very basic directions trying to get the Macbook air
going. I have listen to some of the beginner tutorials on the blind cool
tech site. However, what they say I am to do to get started is not working.

For example command plus the letter o is to open an app or file. That is
doing nothing.

I know this device is awesome. But I am struggling. I would be willng to
pay for help and share my phone number off list if someone is willing to
help me get past these begging challenges. Thanks for reading this long
email!!

Last night I tried TV Guide and was amazed. Not only is it free but it's
blind friendly too. When I first got the app installed, it asks you to
select a provider such as cable or local channels. I have Cox Cable and
selected that and let then use my zip code to provide content.

Once the quick setup was finished here's what I found. The present 30
minute such as 7 or 7:30 is shown. flick right to move through upward
through the channels. As you do so, what's on as of that time is shown.
For example, let's say it's CBS. If you want to see the schedule for that
channel because you know two and a half men is coming on tonight but you
don't know exactly when. Just double and that brings up the list of what is

on from the present time forward. You can also bring up a search box so you

can type in what your looking for. I found the app very easy to use and
very blind friendly. Just thought you might like to know too.

I found a player that plays ogg files on i-devices and I believe also
handles streaming and wifi transfers. You can put ogg files on your i-device
by using the file sharing table in apps in iTunes so the ogg files do not
have to be in your iTunes library. I believe it plays some other formats
that iTunes doesn't also. Right now there's a patent issue so it does not
play aac files. I got the free lite version which has ads but the full
player costs $2.99. I did see some unlabeled buttons but I've already put an
ogg file on my iPhone via the file sharing table and it appeared on my phone
immediately when I tapped My Documents. Unless somebody has a better player
to recommend that also puts the files on the device via file sharing, I'm
going to pay the $2.99 and get this. No need to convert my ogg files to mp3
and no need to sync them in iTunes! I would post the link but I haven't ever
figured out how to get the link; maybe somebody could enlighten me in my
appalling ignorance!

Hi,

Press VO M to go to the menu bar. As soon as this is pressed, you will be
placed on the Apple menu. In here, select about this Mac. Its the first
option in the menu. This will display the OS on your Mac. To get Mountain
Lion, in the same Apple menu, select App store. Find Mountain Lion 10.8 and
purchase and download it like you would a song or app from iTunes. It will
download. When done, just follow the prompts.

This weeks episode is a look at Apples BT Keyboard. I give a physical
description, walk through of the available commands and features and finish
by talking about how well the keyboard pairs with iOS devices. I covered
most, if not all, the commands but please feel free to leave a comment on
the site if you think of any I missed, there's bound to be one or two. I am
planning to cover the specific keystrokes available when in editing mode in
a future podcast as I only touched briefly on these here.

2012-08-08 Thread dan thompson
Hi all,
I need to use Pages as a totally blind person to show some Hearing impaired
individuals how to use the program on their IPads. I managed to open a
document but am not sure how. I am actually looking for some tutorial that
truly starts with the basics of:
creating the blank document/open the blank screen
saving the document after it has been typed into
making format changes lik fonts etc
how to send the saved file as an attachment in email so it can be printed or
brailled from another computer.
Hope to hear from someone and thanks in advance.

verizon and IPhone problem solved

2012-07-03 Thread dan thompson
Hi there, I called a different verizon store In Springfield Illinois and
told them I knew of other states and towns where Verizon offered IPHone. So
the gentleman said, "those IPhones sold in Wal-mart for 797 cents are AT&T
and can not be used with verizon. So you must buy an IPHone for from us for
it to work with Verizon." Short story, my client has decided to buy his
IPhone from Verizon. He is buying the $199.00 4S. I had to explain to the
Verizon salesman how to get the phone talking but I believe they got a bit
of an education regarding how to use the IPHone with visually impaired
users. Thanks for all camments regarding this topic. God bless and have a
great Fourth Of July Vacation.

Re: Associating Ring Tones with Callers

2012-06-30 Thread dan thompson
Hi there, If you open a person's contact info in your contacts, there is an
option to add a ring tone.
Once placing your finger on the ring tone option, touch anywhere else on the
screen. You are then given a list of ring tones. If you keep one finger
onone and then touch anywhere else on the screen, that one will be selected and
one can hear what that tone sounds like. Keep repeating this action until
finding one you like. Leave your choice selected. Then move to the top right
corner of the PHone screen and put one finger on "done." Then hjolding one
finger on done, touch anywhere else on the phone and the new ring tone is
added. Touch the top left corner of the phone and come down slowly until
finding "all contacts back." Keeping one finger there, touch anywhere else on
the phone screen and you return to the list of contacts. From: Sandy Finley

Hello John and others,

Yes, Navigon can be used in Pedestrian mode. I agree with Raul, Navigon is
a good app and works reasonably well with Voiceover, but it has a bit of a
learning curve and I think most people who post on here that it's useless and
is not Voiceover friendly just haven't taken the time to play around with it.
Below is a bit of a write-up I sent to somebody else a while ago and maybe you
find it useful, I am giving some examples which were relevant for that list
member and I haven't changed them because it really doesn't matter which places
I use as an example. Also, the descriptions of screens and settings I use are
based on the latest version of Navigon.

Before you give up on Navigon it really is important to understand the app.
As somebody pointed out before, you can input a route by entering in an address
or a POI which typically is a restaurant, gas station, store etc. If you want
to enter an address you can't enter the entire address at once, e.g. you can't
just type 1234 Washington Street into the edit field, it is a multi-step
process where first you pick the Map (if you have several installed you may
have to pick Florida etc.). Once that is done it asks you for the city. You
live in Pensacola, so if you start typing "Pensa" Pensacola should show up in a
list, the fewer letters you type the more options are on the list, for example,
if you live somewhere where you have towns like Clifton, Clydsdale, Clearwater,
Clearfield, Clearbrook, if you were to type "cl, all of these would be in the
list, if you type "c l e", only the 3 choices starting with "clear" show in the
list and if you type "clearw" only Clearwater would be left. You can, at any
time, check the list and double tap on the city you want if it is in the list.
Once you do that the next screen comes up and this says "Street in Pensacola
text field", as long as you selected Pensacola as your city. If you keep
flicking right you see a list of all streets in Pensacola sorted
alphabetically. Double tap the edit field so you can start entering text and
enter, in your case, "St" or "Star" and then make sure "Stark Avenue" or "Stark
Ave" is listed and double tap to select it.

Especially with streets it is important to pick from the list since you
never know if the complete name is "Stark Ave", "Stark Avenue" etc. In some
towns you may have the same street name with a "W" or "E" at the end for "West"
and "East", but if you typed the name spelling out "West" it may not recognize
it because it only wants "W". Once you see your street on the list, double tap
it and now you have the option to either enter a house number or cross
street/intersection. VoiceOver announces "Text Field is Editing, Character
Mode, No/Intersection in Stark Avenue". Once again this is assuming you
selected Stark Avenue and that your rotor setting is set to character, not word.

If you flick right, you'll find a list of intersections listed and if you
double tap on one it would navigate to that intersection. Anyhow, enter your
house number and press the "Done" button at the very bottom right of the
onscreen keyboard.

Now the very top left option will read like this:

No. Back Button

This means if you double tap here it will go back one screen back to where
you can enter the number. Pressing back on that screen will go back to where
you can enter/select the street name, back again will go to the city etc.

If you flick right once you will have the "Start Navigation" button. Flick
right once more and it will read you the full address with city, zip code etc.
that you entered.

Press "Start Navigation", then flick right on the next screen, here you
have your second "Start Navigation". If you flick right again here (you would
have to do this fairly quickly, it will give you one or more distances. These
are the possible routes you can select. If you press "Start Navigation", it
will select whatever preference you have chosen, e.g. Shortest, Fastest, Scenic
etc. This is somewhere in Settings and I typically have this set to "Shortes

Re: app: ariadne?

2012-05-31 Thread dan thompson
Hi, I have navigon and ariadne. I found it challenging to get ariadne to
let me know of street names. I was told if you load ariadne first and then
navigon, the streets are spoken while walking. But that didn't work either.
I would love to figure how to do the following withariadne.

1. How can I get street names to be announced when walking?
2. Verbaly announce when comming up to an intersection.

I have found how to get the addresses to be announced. However, ariadne
says each one while I am passing them and that gets to much talking.
Navigon on the other hand is working great for setting a destination and
announcing the major turn points etc of the route while in travel.

Here is a tutorial that we wrote about where the codes are:
  http://www.digit-eyes.com/cgi-bin/digiteyes.fcgi?action=scanningTips

It would be great if they were consistent, but they are not. They are nicely
put where people won't find them, but grocery store scanners will. Given that
the scanners are no more than 6 inches tall and scan the bottom, back and sides
of the item, you can pretty much bet they will be there.

One of the things we do recommend doing is to print up a bunch of labels
every time you do your shopping and put the purchase date on them ("bought May
8, 2012).

While you are unpacking the groceries, scan the item and put the date label
close to where the manufacturer's UPC or EAN label is.

Then when you go to scan again, you'll have a tactile indicator of where the
code is and it becomes very simple to find.

Re: Finding Barcodes with Digit-Eyes

2012-05-08 Thread dan thompson
Hi, once digit eyes finds the bar code, is there to be a beep or something
to indicate the code has been found. I am having problems getting any
results with Digit eyes but I do know with p ractice I will get it.
However, it is discouraging right now. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Subject: Finding Barcodes with Digit-Eyes

Hello Folks,

I decided to see if there was some consistency on where the barcodes are
located on cans, boxes, etc. For the most part, the seam overlapped to the
left, the barcode was to the left of the seam about 1/2 " from the bottom
of
the can or in the middle of the can. This is the same if the label on a
can
overlaps to the right where you can feel the edge of the label on the
right
side. Once in a while, I found the barcode in the middle of the can when
the

overlapping portion of the label was pointed to the left. This was on hot
cocoa. With boxes, I looked for the top (to open the box) where the flap
would be to get a directional sense. On the bottom of the package, it
would

be either on the left or right edge. However, I know in previous training
for myself, the barcodes could be found on one of the sides of the box. I
have more success when I move the phone slowly and wait for a click. As
Nancy said, the camera needs to focus, so I give a couple of seconds in
one
location before moving the phone. I usually wait for a click before
moving.

Remember, you need to move the phone in a vertical direction and not
horizontally. Also, I use my right thumb or index finger on the right
upper

corner of the phone to help line up the camera to make sure it is getting
the area I think the barcode is in. My case for my phone has a nice
rectangular opening to assist with lining it up with the item I am trying
to
scan. I am getting better with scanning regular objects, but like
everything

else, there will be a learning curve with it. I do advise to print out a
practice sheet to master one's style in capturing the barcode. With items
that have a label on two opposite sides, the smaller label is usually
where

one can find the barcode. If you are making audible labels, what I do is
estimate where the middle of the label is, place the phone just below the
upper edge, and then lift very slowly. I always use the right upper right
corner and line it up using my fingers with the label. Again, I usually do
not move the phone until I hear a click. This technique has help me master
capturing the label with the barcode. I would only purchase Avery labels
listed on the website, as I had problems getting Digit-Eyes to work with
Staple labels. These are just my observations and I hope it helps others
in

using this wonderful app.

Eileen

Re: gps for pedestrians, again, probably

2012-04-21 Thread dan thompson

Hi Raul ,
This is Dan Thompson. I am retired from the Illinois School For The
Visually Imparied. We have talked several times regarding GWmicro's gps
when I was at school.
I have baught Ariadne for my personal use. I was wondering if you are very
confortable using it? If so I had a few questions. I will put them here in
case you have the answers. I have checked several places on the internet
with little success.

First I have learned how to creat a favorite in the program.
1. If one brings up a favorite, how do you type in a destination address to
go to?
2. I thought I had most prompts regarding street announcements when
traveling, but when traveling in a car today, no street names were
announced.

3 Can you save a root and then bring it up later to activate?
3. How do you delete a favorite?
5. How wold you delete a root.

Thanks for reading over this long email and your past help.,

Hi Damon. I think a good app to do this is Ariadne GPS. The cost is around
$2.99 USD. It will tell you what street you are on and the approximate
address number and the direction you are traveling.

Good luck.
