Re: Neck Speakers

2023-07-27 Thread Doug Parisian
Sieghard, I cannot provide a specific link and if I did, it might spoil
your exploratory fun. You have the idea of neck speakers. My Monster is
horse shoe shaped, fits comfortably around the back of the neck, and the
two speakers face upward roughly on either side of the head. Though they
may fee a bit heavy in the hand, one worn one could easily forget they
have the device on as I have occasionally done.

My fuzzy brain says you are from Canada so:

www.amazon.ca

once there, select electronics in the drop-down box, tab over to the
search field, enter "neck speaker" and spend money.

On 2023-07-27 3:13 p.m., Sieghard Weitzel wrote:

Can you provide a link for your Monster neck speaker?

By "neck speaker" do you mean those who look a bit like a large
horseshoe and you hang them around your neck and the speakers then sit
more or less on your collarbone on each side of  your neck, straight
down from your ears?

There are many of them available on Amazon, my first one was made of a
hard plastic and I found it less comfortable so I got another one
where the part that goes around your neck is a thick, round and
softer/flexible material. At the end of it then is the speaker part of
each side and on the right side are your typical controls for turning
the speaker on/off as well as play/pause, volume up/down and skip
forward/rewind. The one I have does have a microphone and I use it if
it's just answering a short call, but it's not really good enough for
a long conversation.

It is of course incredibly rude when people talk on the phone let
alone in a different language, I mean, where do we live? What is
Canada becoming with so many people from so many different countries
and cultures 🤣

Then of course I may have been heard speaking Germany on the phone
with my Mom or maybe my wife has dared to speak Filipino with her
family. What I certainly would not want is fo reverybody around me to
overhear not just one side but both sides of the conversation or to
hear which audio book I am listening to. A GPS announcement is one
thing, but that's about it and for me the neck speaker is something I
use when I am working in my shop or in the garden and I want to listen
to a book but not necessarily wear a headset.

Well gentle readers, perhaps I'm a little slow on the uptake here.

Apparently, neck speakers of various types and quality have been
around for a few years. For reasons of which I'm not quite sure, there
had never been a discussion of this audio alternative.

I bit the bullet and purchased a neck speaker made by monster. Were I
more knowledgeable and attentive, I would have purchased one which
included a microphone. For years, I had this damn silly idea that bone
conduction was the way to go so I wouldn't disturb the rest of humanity.

Forget that; the rest of humanity has been disturbing me for years
with one sided phone conversations, talking rudely on busses and other
places, and even in a different language.

I ride the buses which in Winnipeg have major stop announcements
announced for all to hear. When necessary, I have my GPS fill in the
streets not announced including my distance from my chosen location.

Alex and fans and non fans! I poked around on both the Canadian sites
for Bestbuy and the source. Only Bestbuy had a few choices including an
"unboxed" Monster which is the same as mine for $68. Mine was brand new
from amazon for $69. That was on Amazon Prime days.

I did not purchase them for movies or music though they (sorry, it)
sounds reasonable. Monster makes a big deal about being able to feel the
music which in fact does absolutely NOTHING for me beyond being slightly
annoying. Unlike a quality audio system, or concert, this unit has what I
call "toy" bass. $25 apple ear buds sound much better!

Damn, $4/$5 ain't a whole pot of money; lunch is likely more expensive,

embarrassment since one of the requirements of my meeting was
familiarity with Zoom which I had used several times but not for
several months. I suspect some updates changed basic settings one of
which was to turn off certain items by default which were enabled in
previous versions.

I think I've been able to fix the problem but when I tried to use the
basic test from Zoom, I was asked for an access code which of course I
didn't have. I actually registered with Zoom and they sent me an
invitation to test their service, with no code of any kind included.

Anyway, here's what I did in hopes of fixing my problem for a zoom
meeting tomorrow. I've sending this to the list in cawe others have a
solution or experienced the same issues with Zoom.

1 Open zoom and activate the tab at the bottom labelled as "more," it
will say selected when double tapped.

2 Move below "settings." You might have to swipe around a bit to
locate the settings.

3. Double tap "meetings."

4 Double tap "mute my microphone" and be sure that is set to off.

I have never had to play around in the Zoom settings before. Prior to
my most recent effort, Everything just worked when activating the
provided link in my invitation emails.

I make this noise by rubbing my hind legs together.

Re: Further updates Microsoft Soundscape app

2023-01-01 Thread doug parisian
I see no issue here with the numbers of various types of information and
orientation apps out there like Blindsquare, goodmaps outdoors, etc. And
damn, there may even be some folks out there willing to pick up the ball.

Microsoft Soundscape - Further Information
Firstly , thank you all so much for sharing my recent post about the
imminent demise of Microsoft Soundscape. It is obvious from the number
of comments and shares the post got, that I am not the only one who
was shocked by the news.

Now, this is not a direct response to me from Microsoft - however…
Via a chain of contacts I have been lead to believe that one of the
main reasons for Microsoft discontinuing Soundscape is that they don’t
think very many people use it.Apparently they have no way of knowing,
which I have to say rocks my world somewhat.
So, here’s the thing. Let’s let Microsoft know how much we use, and
how much we rely on it for safety, independence and orientation.
You never know, this might be that one time when pester power actually
works.
So,once again, please share this post far and wide, andlet’s see if we
can get Microsoft to change it’s mind.

Re: voice ocr?

2022-11-24 Thread doug parisian

Mich and Richard, sorry for being slow on the reply, got a bit busy.

Anyway, I have used several Apps over the past 10 years and found the
best overall recognition was done by Voice OCR. I have used the
Microsoft offering and others which are now in suspended animation since
Voice OCR reads cards, canned and packaged goods, and messy items the
best of the bunch. And, I'm not sure why being a student is a strike
against the developer. I have received any help I requested through the
support feature of the App.

Hey Mich, one could probably go crazy testing out the number of OCR

Most OCR I have tried can't read the embossed numbers on the cards;

My initial reaction was that you are being New York paranoid.

It is just as likely that a mugger could wack a blind person on the
head, and put their finger on the device to unlock it if it has the
home button.

I've never heard of either thing happening anywhere.

And, good luck to the thief who knows nothing about VoiceOver doing
anything with the phone. Which leads me to my personal approach. The
screen curtain is always on unless I need a sighted person's help, or
want to show them something. So, again, good luck to the person who
could use face ID to unlock my phone only to find a blank screen and
something jabbering at them.

Also, if you are holding your phone out in front of you, rather than
wearing it in a harness for orientation or directions, you are putting
yourself more at risk.

take the device and just wait around and follow the visually
impaired person without them knowing it, then, when the time is
right, whip out the phone and get it unlocked without the owner

Re: kindle

2022-08-13 Thread doug parisian

I think I understand the difficulties some are having with Kindle.

Specifically, in order to navigate in Kindle for specific text elements
such as characters, words and lines, one must first select the desired
unit with the rote and then swipe and down.

In apps such as Safari, one can move freely in any direction on the
screen regardless of any text unit setting on the rotar. In these cases,

A three finger swipe to the left will go to the next page, and a three finger

read continuously from that page to the end of the book. You can just touch the

Not that I can recall. It will use the Voice Over on your phone. If
you want, I can also share a link for a dropbox copy of the Kindle
app for the PC. Very easy to use. You tab through to the library ,
then choose the book and enter on it, then you tab to the table of
contents if it exists or to the beginning of the book.

Very accessible. The software for the computer, the iPhone and the
Kindle tablets are very user friendly. If you buy a tablet, you
will need help turning on the Voiceview feature, which is like
Voice Over at first, but after that, it stays on.
I also recommend using a wireless keyboard with it.

Re: Updates Please For accessible air fryers And Thermometers

2022-04-29 Thread doug parisian
The info seems a good start. However, if it is the same smart fryer I
had just before Xmas, I returned it since I could not get it to work
with Vesync. Perhaps if I could have turned the unit on by some remote
app, it might have been satisfactory. I didn't find any Alexa info
during my last purchase.

BTW, I've used Iphones since 2012 and still have the Instant pot which
was almost made useless by the neglect of the manufacturer. Pressure
from consumers I suspect caused them to continue support. However, I
haven't checked the app store to see if the App is still available in
the app store. However, my present instant pot app still works with IOS
15.4.1. Not sure what will happen when apple releases subsequent updates.

Perhaps things in regards to accessibility for blind folks have improved.

The Second Edition of Personal Power

Hello everyone. It's been a long and strange couple of years. A
whole lot of people out there seem to have found the first
edition, with all of its many imperfections, to be of some help.
Given the very positive feedback and so many earnest hopes
expressed that I would update this guide, I have indeed done so.

As before, the guide is completely free to all. I encourage you to
share it with whoever you wish. Provided the guide remains
unaltered and freely given, I have no issue with this. If anyone
is willing to make the guide available in other formats, such as
DAISY, Braille, etc, you have my sincere thanks for making that
effort. I would request you share that effort with me so I can
make the files available to everyone along with the other versions
of the guide.

I have placed copies of the second edition of the guide in four
different formats. For most readers, I recommend the EPUB version.
It has an interactive table of contents and should be the best in
most cases. Many people requested a version in Microsoft Word, so
I've put the DOCX version in the directory. I've also created a
PDF version thanks to that option being available in Pages. It
works well in the Voice Dream Reader app, but I think EPUB is
still better. The final version is a plain text Markdown format
version of the guide. In it, there is sadly no table of contents.
However, you can search for headings denoted by one or more number
signs or hashes. This could be helpful for people who find that
the EPUB version fails to work for them. I also hope that people
will find ways to use this, or the other files, in the creation of
versions with active tables of contents, or other advantageous
format aids.

For ease of use, I have place these files in a shared Google Drive
folder. I hope this method of distribution will prove less
troublesome for people than prior attempts. The link to the folder is:

Malcolm, I have been experience the problems as you describe for at

Hello Jenn,

Thanks for the confirmation. May I ask what iPhone and version of iOS

I have tried everything I can think of to resolve this issue and
establish a cause.

I have signed out of iCloud and back in, reset the device and erased
all content and settings, set it up as a new device and put it in
Recovery Mode and updated via iTunes but the problem remains.

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and am in the UK but I don’t think it is
is not a geographical problem.

I cannot attribute the problem to the bit rate of the tracks as these
vary between albums and have no apparent effect on the playback of
tracks. Some tracks exhibit the problem while others do not. Even
downloading the tracks to the iPhone does not change the outcome so
presumably it’s not a network issue.

I could compile a list of albums that play as they should and those
that do not, but I don’t think that would help.

The strange thing is that if I double-tap any track they play fine. It
is only when one track follows another the problem is apparent.

Another album which is an older recording that is problematical is:

https://music.apple.com/gb/album/mascagni-cavalleria-rusticana-leoncavallo-i-pagliacci/691492718

As this protracted issue may be of little or no interest to other list
members I will close by thanking you all for your thoughts and efforts
to help me track down this issue.

If I choose to listen to an entire album then when track two,

One album where this issue is present is ABBA’s recent Voyage album.

I have tried all configurations of the Music App but without

Would someone try playing the album from the beginning and see if

Re: Looking for feature-Rich Voiceover Air Fryer

2021-11-15 Thread doug parisian
Barry, thanks, I had considered the casori but the Proscenic had a high
number of reviews with 4.6 rating on Amazon. I will, just to satisfy
myself, try pairing with the Vesync app though I expect no results.
Vesync looks almost too multi-purpose to cover all brands and Proscenic
is comparatively new on Amazon though not so in other than north
American markets.

If by some fluke all functions of the Proscenic are supported, I'll need
to return it to Amazon since the Basket lock will not release from the
containing drawer.

BTW, I think we met many many moons ago when Terry Green lived in

Re: My Siri Isn't Working

2021-11-09 Thread doug parisian
Well well, there seems quite a run on big bad Siri being uncooperative.
I experienced the same variety of issues a couple of weeks ago and a
call both to accessibility and general support confirmed that all my
settings were correct for effective use of Siri. Seems that the problems
are occurring in specific areas; I wonder how many servers, relays, or
whatever are supporting queen Siri?

Re: How can I answer the phone with gloves on?

2021-11-09 Thread doug parisian
There have been so many messages on this subject that someone may have
already presented this solution which works very well for me.  With my
phone set to auto answer, I need do nothing before the call is answered.
This is awesome when my dog takes me for a walk, or if I'm in the tub
with my model Titanic. If I'm not able to take the call, I simply shout
either, "I'll call back,' or if it's a marketer, "I already have 3 of
those." To set up auto answer:

Open settings and go to accessibility/touch
once in the "touch" area, wipe right to auto-answer calls and double
tap. If you decide to turn on auto answer calls, the next items allow
either a direct edit of time or you can choose to increase or decrease
the length of time before auto answer picks up.

I've written this message very slow in case you cannot read very quick.

Hey Folks,

Sorry coming in to this late,

I know that some countries get pretty cold in winter,

But if it’s that cold you have to wear gloves

Isn’t it then getting to cold for your phone to be out in the wintery air?

I just cut the tips off my polypro gloves but then the coldest we get is may be
0 C in which case kiwis stay in doors rather than going out and getting cold.

Well sensible ones do anyway.

Or just cut the tips of your gloves fingers out so you can touch the screen
with the tip or pad of the finger and answer the phone.

You would only have to do it with one digit

be done, answer the phone with gloves on?

Re: screen time query

2021-10-31 Thread doug parisian
Alan, I have a different view of the value of screen time. First, it
only shows once a week so for me, no deal at all. In fact, it is
educational and revealing. It seems that I am spending about 2 hours per
day which I suspect may be seriously modest. When I'm not feeling lazy,
I'll adjust appropriate settings on both my Iphones to get a more
accurate reading. I use one phone as an Ipad.

I don't play games on my devices. I do use a podcast app, a couple of
GPS APPS, a broadcast receiver, a couple of book type programs, email,
Safari, recipes, Amazon for shopping, Flip for Groceries, Flipp PC
optimum and PC Xpress (shopping), instapot--and I know I missed
something along the way. and yes, my phone rarely leaves me for any
reason, even while in bed. Hey, who wants to get out of bed at 2 AM just
to read a book, listen to a podcast, check the weather, etc.

Help with My New Google Mini

2021-10-09 Thread doug parisian
Well, for the very very few times in my little life, I won a Google
mini. I could likely scan most of the instructions but would be happier
for a web or text version of the manual.

I did finger some of it out including downloading the Google home app. I
would prefer reading instructions on a different device so I could
implement then as I go using either the home app or Mini features as
directed.

BTW, this mini is shaped like those chocolate cushion-shaped cookies
with the goo inside.

If anyone’s using a tripod that can comfortably hold an XR or the

something to securely hold a larger iPhone to FaceTime and whatnot.

Re: Transferring from Iphone 8 to Iphone XR

2021-08-27 Thread doug parisian
Sieghard, As mentioned earlier, I've set up several Iphones but never
had one which used the contact message. On my Iphone 8, I purposefully
changed the setting in camera from Video to Photo when the first contact
didn't work, assuming it might have been the Video setting. Nothing
changed when I set it to Photo so that wasn't the problem.  My first
attempt might have been sloppy as the Swiping instead of the button is
new to me. I now have it practised and mastered.

Having accomplished this mastery, I decided to try again after starting
from scratch and setting up the XR as a new phone; still no luck.  If
one only gets one chance despite starting from scratch, I consider this
a serious bug.

Turn on your new device and place it near your current device. The Quick Start
screen appears on your current device and offers the option of using your Apple

use, then tap Continue. If you don't see the option to continue on your current

Wait for an animation to appear on your new device. Hold your current device
over the new device, then center the animation in the viewfinder. Wait for a
message that says Finish on New [Device].
If you can't use your current device's camera, tap Authenticate Manually, then
follow the steps that appear.

Here is the link to the entire article, I have done this with my iPhone 11 as
well as my wife's iPhone 11 Pro when we upgraded from the iPhone 8 we both had
before and it worked just fine.

It sounds like you already went through the initial setup process, transferring
from one phone to the next has to be done almost at the very beginning of the
initial setup, I don't think you can do it after the fact.

First, I'm no stranger to both setting up a new Iphone, or successfully
transferring all data from one phone to another using Itunes.

The Iphone XR is the first one I've used without a home button. I called apple
disability support to save me time digging through the apple site and Iphone
manual. So, I learned how to invoke SIRI with the side button and the swipe up
from the bottom etc to bring up desired screens.

However, I get no response when holding my new Iphone face over the old Iphone
also face up no matter how I move the new phone to get focus from the front
camera of the old Iphone. What am I doing wrong? I've already tried cursing and
swearing!

Hope that all makes sense?

Instapot APP ALIVE AND WELL!!!

2021-07-28 Thread doug parisian
Yes, it's true, I just got an update for the instapot APP on my Iphone 8
using the latest IO release 14.7.  Guess the instapot gang may have
taken quite a beating over their unfortunate error of their ways. I
doubt whether an angry bunch of blind apple folks alone tipped the
balance. Maybe someone could check out the instapot social media links
to see if they took a serious beating for their mistake. It would put a
song in my heart to hear how David slew Goliath!

Re: Sennheiser Connect accessibility

2021-07-11 Thread doug parisian
Sieghard, strange how some folks actually missed my original question
which was of course about software and not any reference to hardware
quality. I did in fact choose the particular model of Sennheiser for all
the reasons you stated in your two messages; you saved me a lot of hard
work!. And, there is another reason; I'm chancing purchasing a reduced
price model from the Amazon warehouse. The original price for the
Sennheiser was $370.44, warehouse price $245.85. I have already proven
the Amazon "easy return" policy, having been a happy customer since
2012. Muy second close choice was in fact the Anker Q35.

overly loud music or whatever from any headset is not very good for you in the long run
and sound quality is not determined by volume. What sets apart a truly good headset or
speaker is whether it still sounds good at a not so loud volume. Anker just as TripIt
makes a decent product for a relatively cheap price, but there is typically a reason why
somebody who can afford it will spend 5 or 6 times the amount what one of these less
expensive products costs.

This app needs a supported Sennheiser device to open up it's features so
I couldn't go beyone the first intro screens.  I was required to check
the usual items agreeing to the license, terms of privacy and blah blah
blah. While maybe not a bitg deal, I smelled the faint scent of a skunk
not knowing for sure whether the boxes were checked or not. Fortunately,
if they are checked. the accept button states being not dimmed and it
works. The App only gets a 2 out of five rating on the App store; I

Re: Insta pot

2021-06-08 Thread doug parisian
Well gentle readers: I have 3 older iphones which will not accept the
most recent updates. I am using an Iphone 8 which does accept the
updates but of course is no longer friendly to instapot.

And boy, do I have a deal for you-all, maybe!  I am willing to give a
sad instapot owner one of the oldie mouldier phones set up as a new Iphone.

Sadly, I have no ink for my printer and have no intention to replace the
cartridges; I might need to print something once or twice a year.

Here's the thing! To get one of these relics you need to send an
addressed and stamped padded envelop to me. Not sure of postal cost for
the phone? Five bucks should cover it. This might not be so good for
folks other than Canadians and possibly US folks. I get to keep the
change and American exchange, my tip.

Re: Call recording apps

2021-05-24 Thread doug parisian
Wasn't there a device at one time with a suction cup one could stick on
a specific part of the phone, like the receiver to record a phone call.
I recall in my distant dark past having one though I preferred to attach
alligator clips to a part of the phone which allowed me to use my

Damn, that was almost 50 years ago; the joys of being a t eenager.

What is the easiest call recording app for in coming calls? I see there are a

Re: Upgrading Iphone 7

2021-05-07 Thread doug parisian
David, thanks for what I suspected.  Yes, auto updates are turned off.
I'll eventually commit the many tangible buttons on instapot to memory.
Further, I have no reason for updating IO on Iphone 7.  I had originally
planned to hand in a couple of retired Iphones to Apple for whatever
bucks I could nab but just never got to it, then I learned just in time
about Instapot.  I had already properly wiped my Iphone 7 which had only
16 GB.  My 8 has 32GB and managed to get the larger backup sufficiently
restored on 8 to include Instapot.  I don't care about the rest of the
apps since 7 if only to be used for instapot.

And don't get me started on the moral bankruptcy of appliance
manufacturers.  Example, a talking microwave need not cost anywhere near
$300 but that isn't for this list.

Hi Doug,

An iPhone 7 can run IOS 14.x so if you attempt to upgrade it, IOS 14.5.1 would

don't upgrade.

I have read about the problem with Instapot dropping support for the bluetooth
version of the Instapot. Is this what you are running into or is there a
separate problem with the app for Instapot? I have heard that the WIFI model
Instapot is working OK but that does not help all those who bought the
bluetooth model and the WIFI model is more expensive.

One last thought - I'm sure you've done this but make sure you have "automatic
updates" turned off on your iPhone 7 to prevent the upgrade to IOS 14.5.1.

2021-03-06 Thread doug parisian
Louise, I think I have your password keyboard moving characters solved.
And yes, I too miss the password clicks but I simply keep entering the
requirements and the field does indeed get filled.

Now then, once in the edit field, you can use the rotor to select
exactly how you want your keyboard to respond when entering characters,
To keep things short, I set my rotor as follows:

1I select "slide to type" to on.

2. Turn your rotor until you hear "typing mode." Swipe down until you
hear "touch typing."

If you follow these steps everything will go as smooth as silk. With
these settings, you simply slid your finger around and lift it when you
year the letter or symbol you want, and it just works.  There might be
one more adjustment you need to make in settings which I don't recall
off hand.  Let us know and I'll dig it up if this doesn't work for you.

iPhone’s screen to enter this digit.

3.  Repeat the above procedure until all the digits of your passcode
have been successfully entered, and your iPhone is unlocked.

This method may work better for you than trying to move your finger
around the screen to locate each digit of your passcode.

Re: Iphone and voice control

2020-12-20 Thread doug parisian
Not sure I agree that voice recognition can be made to work perfectly
with VoiceOver without headphones.  I think that, in order to be certain
of no conflicts between voice control and VoiceOver, Voice Control will
need to recognize and filter out any spoken information given by
voiceover regardless of which voice the user selects.  I love using
voice control when wearing some type of head set.

Can Voice Control and VoiceOver be used at the same time or does one need to

What I really would like would be a 10 band equalizer with the ability
to store at least five favourite configurations (or more.)  I see

them.  I would like said equalizer to be independant of other apps but
would allow other apps to use the equalizer features.

I also want a Bryston 4B or equivelant amp for Xmas, BBG!

I have read several messages claiming voice control works poorly with
voiceover.  In fact, this is logical when not using any external
listening devices.  The mike is constantly listening and so may react in
unexpected ways to a word or phrase spoken by Voiceover.

So, if you want/need to use voice control, do so with an external device
with a microphone.  I love voice control for many situations and only
wish it could be used to activate features of programs once opened.

2020-09-25 Thread doug parisian
I have benefited from both this list and the outstanding work on
Applevis since about 2012.  The lack of a specific search field seems a
recent direction; not sure this strategy is the best for novices to the
site.  I haven't activated any of the items in the drop down replacement
for the search field to see if there is then a field offered after the
selection.

In any case, applevis has always been a treasure trove for me as have
various lists.  If the web site is such a big issue, why not join and be
constructive?  Pardon silly old me!

I just went to Applevis.com with Microsoft Edge and with Firefox.

There are no search boxes, none, nada, nowhere.

If you are looking for information on an app, you cannot simply
search for it.

You have to drill down through many pages to get anything.

Even, after following the link from the main page titled, “Apps,” and
you find the heading for Apps, it says:

Apps

article

Here at AppleVis we strive to make it easier for you to find great
and accessible apps to use on Apple products.

From this page, you can browse and search our directories of iOS,
iPadOS, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV apps; see what apps others are
recommending; and

see which iOS and iPadOS apps our community has inducted into our
Hall Of Fame.

So, I followed the link to search, then you have a bunch (I was going
to say s***load, but thought better of it) of more links with not a
search box anywhere to be found.

So, at this point, applevis is only marginally useful, especially for
someone who is a beginner.

I have been using iDevices since they became accessible and can find
what I need most of the time without resorting to asking too many
questions on the list, but I used to always refer people to Applevis,
especially for their blog about updates, and I will still recommend that.

But as a source to find information about specific apps, or just apps
in general, it is a crazy rabbit-warren of trails that I won’t be
bothering with.

Re: How I solved most of my voiceover iOS 14 problem how I solved most of my voiceover iOS 3 team problems

2020-09-25 Thread doug parisian
Cristóbal, Misery loves company; thanks for yours, I've experienced the
same grievous issues.  And yes, I will voice my concerns to apple
plagiarizing a little from what you offered here.

I also experience issues with cursor skipping around along with
occasional "machine gun" clicking almost like the Voice over cursor is
having a heavy duty battle with whatever methods are used to highlight
the screen for sightlings.

In the app store, the swiping will skip past the next item and a
backward swipe, then forward again hits the desired spot; it's a damn
lot of scraping and grinding such as I described also in settings.

I can't get to the "clear forms" item neither from swiping back to that
control or forward to it.

I'll bet that a blind person using chop sticks to gather up peas on a
plate is less challenging than some of the behaviours of IO 14.01.  I've
never experienced such a mess since I started with Iphone in 2012.

On 2020-09-25 11:59 a.m., Cristóbal Muñoz wrote:

I have this exact same problem on my XR. Still present in iOS 14.0.1.

Also, if I want to backspace and delete a bunch of characters, what
I’ll do is double tap and keep one finger on the delete button and
split tap with another finger as many times as I need with VO
announcing each character that’s being deleted. I’ve found this at
least for me a quick way to batch delete characters or a word or two
than selecting the text and then deleting or double tapping the hell
out of the delete key etc.

Anyway, now when I try doing that in iOS 14, every time I split tap,
the cursor is placed at the beginning of the edit field and text. This
has pretty much broken the ability to backspace multiple times via
this method.

Another issue that I don’t think others have mentioned is that now, VO
can’t maintain focus on the dictate button. Whenever I try to gain
focus on the microphone to dictate something anywhere in the OS, VO
flickers and studders and the haptic feedback I get on the iPhone is
like it’s doing the jitterbug. I now have to use the two finger double
tap on an edit field to initiate dictation. So now, dictating has
mostly become a two handed action instead of one simple one handed
action. Super annoying.

I too sent Apple accessibility a screen recording as well as a
diagnostics log at their request.

They said that they’re aware of it, but come on.

Regarding the VO focus thing. Yes, it’s all over the place. I can’t
use the 1Password option to autofill log in credentials if say I have
to select from a list of options as VO gets stuck on either the cancel
button or the edit field. The built-in dictionary feature is also
broken as VO can’t get past the done button when you look up a word.
And on and on.

solved most of my voiceover iOS 3 team problems

For me the Reset did certainly not resolve the focus issues on the
Today screen or how when you swipe left from the top of the Inbox or
message list you get stuck on the search box etc. I initially did the
reset because I have another issue on my iPhone 8 where when I tap on
any edit field and Voiceover says "text field is editing,, characters,
insertion mode at start" this text is repeated with every letter I press.

Here is an example, let's say I open a message in the Messages app and
I want to reply to a text. I double tap on the edit field and
Voiceover says:

Message, text field is editing, iMessage, characters, insertion mode
at start

So I'm now in editing mode, Voiceover tells me it's an iMessage and I
know my rotor is set to characters and I'm at the start of the field
which of course is empty at first.

Let's say I want to start with "Hello", so now I type an "H", here is
what I hear:

Message, text field is editing, H, characters, insertion mode at end.

Then I type the next letter, the "e" in Hello and I hear

Message, text field is editing, He, characters, insertion mode at end.

Now I type the first L and Voiceover says:

Message, text field is editing, Hel, characters, insertion mode at end.

After I type the last letter, the "o" it will say it all over again
now speaking the entire word Hello in the middle and as soon as I
press the space it will repeat it again all over and then I start with
the next word and so on. Even if I accidently type a wrong letter, it
will repeat it all when I press the delete key, for example, if I had
typed an "r" instead of the "e" in Hello it would say:

Message, text field is editing, Hr, characters, insertion mode at end.

If I then press delete to get rid of the r it would repeat but again
only saying H and as you can see this is very annoying. I had
initially asked Richard if he had noticed anything like that, but
since I did also not read anything

Re: Any Accessible Grocery App in Canadian Store?

2020-07-08 Thread Doug Parisian
There are at least 4 shopping-based apps and Windows applications having
various degrees of accessibility. As a person living with no sighted
backups, my favourite place which is almost totally accessible is:
www.superstore.ca

Superstore is under the Loblaws umbrella where there are several stores
depending on where you live. using the superstore sige in Winnipeg, I can
browse flyers, add selected items to my shopping cart, and on check-out
either choose to pick-up or have it delivered. At this point, in store
pick-up is free for oldie moudies like me (seniors) or pay a delivery fee
to have that done under instacart. I have not shopped using instacart
since I prefer to pick up my food with no charge.

Flipp.com would be my second choice for shopping where I do not use the
Loblaw's offering.

Re: Amazon Kindle books

2020-06-26 Thread doug parisian
I strongly agree with David Andrews assessment of the IOS Kindle App.
Unlike my windows version, there seems no way to move through smaller
units than a page, like lines, words, and characters.  It is therefore
impossible using the IOS version to look up specific words, check the
spelling of unfamiliar words or names.  I can do all the above using the
windows app with NVDA. The choices of desired voices has nothing to do
with the IOS kindle app.

and truthfully unrelated but I need to say it, the Alex voice is way
beyond annoying with that fake contrived gasping--way beyond awful!

Good morning,

Amazon Kindle books.  I need to read a particular book that is in

or on the iPhone.  If so, what programs or apps work best?  I've not
tried it with JAWS, and the Kindle app reads some of the book, but I
am having some issues navigating.

It's my first day though.
Any good recommendations are appreciated.

Re: Recording video without camera sounds and speech

2020-05-06 Thread Doug Parisian
This sounds like a future choice which should be built-in to the Camera app
itself. Meantime, try using a set of headphones since the phone won't hear
itself. This is a similar problem when using voice control with speech. Again,
are use headphones so the phone doesn't hear itself.

Re: bug in settings dialogue ios 13.4.1

2020-04-14 Thread Doug Parisian
The bug you mention occurs on my Iphone 8 in several places, web pages, an
online ordering app from the Canadian Loblaws, Safare, The app store, Dominos,
and no doubt I have missed others; well beyond damned annoying. Many such
concerns have been aired on the applevis web site. The situation seems serous
enough that a fix should have been forthcoming.

Hi folks

In some dialogues it is hard to find settings by flicking right. For example:
the voiceover dialogue. You can easily read all stuff but after the speech rate
setting, flicking right you are brought back to the beginning of the dialogue.
However there is much more stuff that can be set. You can only reach that by
holding your finger on the screen and sweep down to the audio or speech
settings and then flick or double tap again. Can this bug be confirmed? In my
oppinion this is a tramendous focus bug that needs to be reported as much as
possible.
After having waited for 8 months now I eventually updated my phone and this is
the first bug I come across that had never been mentioned before.

Davy
