Personally, I find some advertising to be a good thing. Oftentimes individuals
subscribe to this list and know nothing more about what products/resources may
be out there to assist them in learning/using their I-devices.

i don't think we were objecting to discussion about the product, but
Jonathan's position as an executive for the company makes it advertising. One
thing I like about this list is the idea that consumers discuss their
experiences with products. I would hate to start seeing ads from Humanware,
Freedom Scientific, etc. about their products. There are other venues
available for advertising.

Marie N,
I find your post offensive. I also disagree with Mark. Aira is a service I
choose not to subscribe to personally, but see nothing wrong with its promotion
on this list since this list is supposed to be about educating visually
impaired iPhone users about things that are helpful using their phone.
No one complains when the subscription service for Apple Music is
discussed. No one complains when TuneIn Pro Premium subscriptions are discussed.
I think Jonathan deserves an apology for being singled out for this
exclusion.
If this policy is not changed, I too will be unsubscribing.

Hi Mark and everyone. Given this new policy, I'll be unsubscribing after
around 9 years on the group, but I want to express my disappointment about this
change.
During Cara's excellent and even-handed leadership of this group, we had
many occasions where app developers would engage with us about their apps,
especially when those apps were blindness specific.
Since this particular app was one that has come up here on multiple
occasions, with some mentioning it as one of their top apps of 2018, it seemed
appropriate, on-topic, and of value to interested members to let them know
about recent developments, especially a free trial. This has been welcomed on
other groups.
It's a difficult and false distinction to separate the app from the
service, when the app is the vehicle for that service.
Further, the service itself would in the past have been considered
on-topic, because one uses it on an iPhone and it is blindness specific.
Anyway, I've learned a great deal over the last 9 years, so thanks to

Mark,

I got to think your position has created all this wasted traffic on the list.
If you had said nothing, then all this back and forth would not be necessary.
This has digressed dramatically, even now pointing out political things ..

Can we all stop responding to this …

I’ve not been on this list long, but I think it’s hypocritical for Mark to

Hi Mark and everyone. Given this new policy, I'll be unsubscribing after around
9 years on the group, but I want to express my disappointment about this change.
During Cara's excellent and even-handed leadership of this group, we had many
occasions where app developers would engage with us about their apps,
especially when those apps were blindness specific.
Since this particular app was one that has come up here on multiple occasions,
with some mentioning it as one of their top apps of 2018, it seemed
appropriate, on-topic, and of value to interested members to let them know
about recent developments, especially a free trial. This has been welcomed on
other groups.
It's a difficult and false distinction to separate the app from the service,
when the app is the vehicle for that service.
Further, the service itself would in the past have been considered on-topic,
because one uses it on an iPhone and it is blindness specific.
Anyway, I've learned a great deal over the last 9 years, so thanks to everyone
for that.
Should you wish to be on a group where app developers and users can freely
interact, you're welcome to join my BlindPhones list, which covers both iOS

Re: An Aria Update

2019-01-27 Thread Christopher Chaltain
If you extend this argument to mean that any developer for an app
designed for the blind cannot participate on this list, let us know
about their product and new features and then take constructive feedback
then I'd say this is taking this stand too far. I'd say we'd want just
the opposite, namely developers interacting with the blindness community
to help make their apps more accessible and useful to the blind.

I agree that we don't want to go down a slippery slope with allowing
advertisements on this list, but that slippery slope goes both ways,
namely barring all developers from participating on this list. If it
were me, I'd wait until we were actually being swamped by advertisers
before taking such a harsh stand against a company that does provide an
app and a service for the blind. I wouldn't worry about Humanware or
Freedom Scientific advertising on this list since I don't think they
have many products for the iPhone. It seems to me that this is just an
irrelevant point to scare users into one way of thinking. I wonder how
many of these objections stem from some issues with Aira or Jonathan and
not with a concern over advertisements on this list.

I don't agree with Mark's stand on this issue, and I've frequently
scratched my head over some of Mark's posts which were clearly off
topic, but it's Kara's list and Mark is the moderator, so they do have
the right to run this list any way they want and subscribers do have the
ability to look for other lists if they so choose. IMHO, it's kind of a
waste of bandwidth to hash this out on the list and people who are
interested in changing how this list is moderated should probably take
it up with Mark and Kara off list.

I agree with Richard. Many services and apps have been promoted here if that is
what you want to call it.

Just as an example I could point out that everybody seems to love Kosta and
Ashley, the developers of Flicktype and their work deserves respect. While they
have their own list now, they used to be and maybe still are on this list as
well. I remember them and other developers asking for 5 Star ratings for their
apps, many subscription services and models have been discussed and often
people ask where they can buy a particular product or service. How often have I
and others praised sonos equipment which strictly speaking has nothing to do
with the Sonos app in itself. Mark even has often posted articles here which by
his own admission had only a marginal connection to Apple and sometimes maybe
the connection was to Apple but not even to the iPhone. I remember him not that
long ago posting about how happy he was with his Belkin charging pad which
while an iPhone accessory is not strictly an iPhone accessory since it will
charge Android phones just the same. I really fail to see how you can discuss
the Aira app without the service and while Aira probably already has or is
probably planning to offer their app and service on Android that still doesn’t
make it irrelevant to this list since most apps are also on Android and even
Apple’s own music service is.

I have been on this list for I think 9 years now and just recently thought how
it has changed. Of course just as the iPhone has matured this list has also. I
remember in the beginning that the list often had 100 messages a day and that
just before, during and after events like the Apple Developer’s Conference in
June or the big phone release in September traffic would spike although it
often meant 20 messages from people who posted “downloading the new iOS update
now” and so on. I used to be on Jonathan’s Blindphones list back around 2007
when I had a Windows mobile smartphone with MobileSpeak and eventually
unsubscribed when I got my first iPhone and joined Viphone, but as Richard
said, maybe it’s time to check out Blindphones now in this more modern time
where iOS and Android are mature and well-established platforms. I certainly
hope Mark will post a message and maybe let all of us know why he feels the way
he does and then let us know if the arguments which were given are enough to
make him reconsider his position.

Regards,

Sieghard

There is a clear difference I see between Jonathan's advertisement

Jonathan's business clearly helps the blind community and is focussed

And what about all the years when every year Jonathan would post a message
about his new book about iOS? That was clearly advertising and not only was it
tolerated by Mark but it was welcome by the list members with many thank-you
posts for all the work he does. Cara herself used to be affiliated in some way
with the company that made this Recognizer app which was a paid app and she
posted about it. There is nothing wrong with a post which informative but may
or may not advertise an app or a service. Another guy on here, Todd, used to
make a ringtone app and when people asked about how to make ringtones he often
would post basically telling people they could just get his app and easily make
ringtones. Let’s just say there are many examples where apps, products or
services have been mentioned on the Viphone list and some were more promotional
and others maybe more informative. But as many of us said, with something like
Aira it really is impossible to separate the app from the service since the app
is simply the portal to the service. The Sonos app by itself is completely
useless without you owning any of the Sonos speakers, this stuff often just
goes together so at best you could simply say that Aira is not a welcome topic
on the Viphone list because it’s a commercial service, but then you of course
open a can of worms because almost everything is a commercial service from cell
phone plans to music or movie subscriptions and shopping apps.

This is also my final contribution to this topic and it may very well turn
out to be one of the final contributions to this list, let’s see where this
goes in the next day or two. Mark has already posted an article about making a
weather shortcut so I’m sure he has read all the messages and is probably going
to post something soon; at least I hope he does.

I agree with Richard. Many services and apps have been promoted here if that
is what you want to call it.

I have been on this list for I think 9 years now and just recently thought
how it has changed. Of course just as the iPhone has matured this list has
also. I remember in the beginning that the list often had 100 messages a day
and that just before, during and after events like the Apple Developer’s
Conference in June or the big phone release in September traffic would spike
although it often meant 20 messages from people who posted “downloading the new

Jonathan's business clearly helps the blind community and is focussed
on it: there is almost certainly a large enough amount of people on

During Cara's excellent and even-handed leadership of this group, we had

Since this particular app was one that has come up here on multiple
occasions, with some mentioning it as one of their top apps of 2018, it seemed
appropriate, on-topic, and of value to interested members to let them know
about recent developments, especially a free trial. This has been welcomed on
other groups.
It's a difficult and false distinction to separate the app from the
service, when the app is the vehicle for that service.
Further, the service itself would in the past have been considered
on-topic, because one uses it on an iPhone and it is blindness specific.
Anyway, I've learned a great deal over the last 9 years, so thanks to
everyone for that.
Should you wish to be on a group where app developers and users can freely
interact, you're welcome to join my BlindPhones list, which covers both iOS and
Android. If an app developer wishes to take time to engage, they are welcomed
with open arms.

And of course as has been already pointed out in this thread, there's an
Aira group too.
Thanks all.

Anyway, I've learned a great deal over the last 9 years, so thanks to everyone
for that.

Anyway, I've learned a great deal over the last 9 years, so thanks to everyone
for that.
Should you wish to be on a group where app developers and users can freely
interact, you're welcome to join my BlindPhones list, which covers both iOS and
Android. If an app developer wishes to take time to engage, they are welcomed
with open arms.
blindphones+subscr...@groups.io<mailto:blindphones+subscr...@groups.io>.
And of course as has been already pointed out in this thread, there's an Aira
group too.
Thanks all.

This post is offensive and totally uncalled for. The message was, in my
opinion, a promotion of Aira.

Mark, I am so surprised that as one entrusted in a leadership position of a
list that educates it's followers on Iphone related apps that make life
easier for those of us who choose to subscribe to them that you would feel
threatened by Jonathan's good intentions.Jonathan made his career
educating all of us on new ideas and concepts through his pod casts and
charged pennies for it.
Promoting Aira in this way will lead to broader acceptance of the product
among the blindness community and greater value for all of us in the long
run.

It's time for you to resign your post as moderator of this list and time for
those of us wanting open communication without barriers to move over to the
BlindPhone list!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to my tech development with your posts
to this list.

I see your point, Andy. Be that as it may, any new service being offered to
our community, is always appreciated.

However, and this is to everyone, the iOS app only, is to be discussed on
this list. Any questions regarding the service, itself, to be taken
off-list, immediately.

Thank you all for observing this policy.

Hello,
