It’s happened to me once with iOS 16, reset helped. The buttons for the reset
are not the same for all phones, so I always have to google how to do it for
this particular phone .

Re: Another Phone That Won't Talk After Reboot

2022-09-15 Thread Arnold Schmidt
One thing I did not mention in my original message. After my friend had the
sighted person enter his pass code and his phone came back on, then his watch
was all messed up. Apple accessibility told him to do a forced restart of the
watch, and it fixed it. So, when this happens to the phone, until they can get
it figured out, I wonder if doing a forced restart of it, then turning it back
on would work? I mean, there may not be a sighted person around to enter that
code. It almost makes me want to upgrade just to see what camp my cheap phone
would be in, but I think I will wait a bit.

Mine did too after I updated it. I just turned it off today, because I was
hoping it could get my Voiceover in sync so that I could hear it, while on a
phone conversation, but after all that went down, it did not do one thing for
Voiceover.

Could someone tell me where I send an email to Apple to describe my problem,

I think Samantha, but I am not sure. Reading through the latest posts, it seems
to be happening more and more. Yet, I know somebody who was on the public beta
with a regular iphone 13, that says it has never happened to him. When he heard
about the experience of the person who was the subject of my message, he turned
his 13 off, and it came back on with no problem. Who knows.

RE: Another Phone That Won't Talk After Reboot

2022-09-18 Thread Vicky Collins
I had this same thing happen with both my 12 Mini and 13 Mini Friday night, but I haven’t had the problem with either phone since. I’m using the default Samantha voice, and I had no problems when upgrading to iOS 16. With the 13 Mini, I had turned the phone off to get rid of that one unread message badge I often get now when I receive a text message on one of my phones and delete it right after reading. Since I have text message forwarding set up on both of my phones, the phone on which I don’t read the text shows that badge until I either recover the message I have deleted on the other phone or until I reboot that phone on which I haven’t read the message. Anyway, after turning that iPhone 13 Mini back on, VoiceOver did not speak or make any sounds, and nothing I did from trying to talk to Siri, using headphones, turning up the volume button, doing the triple click of the side button or force restarting the phone would bring back the speech. I finally got my 12 Mini to read the screen with Seeing AI, and after pressing the side button to get it where it needed to be, it finally read the slide to unlock or whatever it says, and I lucked into getting the phone into the correct position with the slide I did, and then I miraculously entered the passcode correctly and VoiceOver started talking once again. Before getting to this point, though, I had had enough unsuccessful attempts at entering that passcode to where I had to wait the fifteen minutes before I got the opportunity that actually let me unlock the phone and restore VoiceOver. As for my 12 Mini, while I had turned it off for the same reason as the 13 Mini, meaning another text message badge I wanted to get rid of as I had permanently deleted a message on the 13 Mini and thus couldn’t recover it on the 12 Mini to get rid of that badge, I wasn’t nearly as fortunate with recovering VoiceOver. For, even though I practiced positioning my fingers on the 13 Mini so I would be ready when I could get the 12 Mini to that unlock position, I somehow managed to enter the incorrect passcode every time, figuring this since VoiceOver never did start talking. I let this go on for my opportunity to enter the passcode after an hour, but when that attempt failed and the screen read that my 12 Mini would now be disabled for three hours, I decided to try other things. I couldn’t connect the phone to the computer and try to see if I could bring up the accessibility settings in iTunes because I had turned off the USB accessories setting that would’ve let USB accessories connect after the phone had been locked for an hour. I couldn’t turn the phone off as I normally do by pressing the volume up, then the volume down, and then pressing the side button for a second or two, and I was afraid to try to turn the phone off with holding the side button and one of the volume buttons as I didn’t want to risk calling 911 by mistake, so I wasn’t able to put the 12 Mini in recovery mode either. Oh, although VoiceOver didn’t work, I was able to call either phone when VoiceOver wasn’t working and each would ring even though there was no speech except me hearing myself when I would occasionally get that swipe just right and I managed to get a call connected. Thus, what I wound up doing in the end, as I certainly wasn’t going to knock on a neighbor’s door late at night, was that I went into the Find My app on my 13 Mini, erased the iPhone 12 Mini, and then set up the 12 Mini again restoring it from the iCloud backup I had thankfully done the day before. Sent from Mail for Windows From: Arnold SchmidtSent: Thursday, September 15, 2022 9:17 AMTo: viphone@googlegroups.comSubject: Another Phone That Won't Talk After Reboot I have a friend, who has a 13 Pro, that experienced the same issue as described earlier. VickyWhat an ordeal. Clever you, but not the sort of thing you have the desire to be spending that much time doing right? This thing about voice over not working until you’ve unlocked. Your phone is totally unacceptable. I just turned mine off altogether. I can’t be in years past I never seem to get my thumbprint down right, so I didn’t even bother this time either. And forget about facial recognition for now. finding that place to tell the phone to lock after three minutes or one minute or turn it off altogether can be a bit of a job too. Sent from my iPhoneOn Sep 18, 2022, at 11:21 PM, Vicky Collins wrote:I had this same thing happen with both my 12 Mini and 13 Mini Friday night, but I haven’t had the problem with either phone since. Just FYI, if you have a Bluetooth keyboard connected to your phone you can
enter your PIN on it and using the numbers row on a keyboard or a NumPad if you
have something like a Logitech K780 should be a lot easier and successful than
trying to tap the right numbers on the touchscreen without feedback.
Alternatively if you have handwriting added to your rotor and know how to enter
handwriting you can enter your PIN this way, but again it's probably hit and
miss without feedback. I just tried it for the first time in a long time and
for some reason when I turn the rotor to the right which does bring up
handwriting on the lock screen it defaults to lower case and I have to swipe
down twice with 3 fingers to get to numbers, then I can write my PIN numbers on
the screen and the phone unlocks.
I will write to Apple Accessibility because I think by default if you have a
number field only like with the PIN entry field it would be nice if once you
turned the rotor to handwriting it would automatically default to numbers entry.

And one m ore suggestion since you seem to have a second phone available, why
not call Aira or Be My Eyes, using OCR on the screen is good and it may tell
you what is there, but another person could have probably helped you tap the

on both of my phones, the phone on which I don’t read the text shows that badge
until I either recover the message I have deleted on the other phone or until I
reboot that phone on which I haven’t read the message.

Anyway, after turning that iPhone 13 Mini back on, VoiceOver did not speak or
make any sounds, and nothing I did from trying to talk to Siri, using
headphones, turning up the volume button, doing the triple click of the side
button or force restarting the phone would bring back the speech. I finally got
my 12 Mini to read the screen with Seeing AI, and after pressing the side
button to get it where it needed to be, it finally read the slide to unlock or
whatever it says, and I lucked into getting the phone into the correct position
with the slide I did, and then I miraculously entered the passcode correctly
and VoiceOver started talking once again. Before getting to this point, though,
I had had enough unsuccessful attempts at entering that passcode to where I had
to wait the fifteen minutes before I got the opportunity that actually let me
unlock the phone and restore VoiceOver.

As for my 12 Mini, while I had turned it off for the same reason as the 13
Mini, meaning another text message badge I wanted to get rid of as I had
permanently deleted a message on the 13 Mini and thus couldn’t recover it on
the 12 Mini to get rid of that badge, I wasn’t nearly as fortunate with
recovering VoiceOver. For, even though I practiced positioning my fingers on
the 13 Mini so I would be ready when I could get the 12 Mini to that unlock
position, I somehow managed to enter the incorrect passcode every time,
figuring this since VoiceOver never did start talking.

I let this go on for my opportunity to enter the passcode after an hour, but
when that attempt failed and the screen read that my 12 Mini would now be
disabled for three hours, I decided to try other things. I couldn’t connect the
phone to the computer and try to see if I could bring up the accessibility
settings in iTunes because I had turned off the USB accessories setting that
would’ve let USB accessories connect after the phone had been locked for an
hour. I couldn’t turn the phone off as I normally do by pressing the volume up,
then the volume down, and then pressing the side button for a second or two,
and I was afraid to try to turn the phone off with holding the side button and
one of the volume buttons as I didn’t want to risk calling 911 by mistake, so I
wasn’t able to put the 12 Mini in recovery mode either. Oh, although VoiceOver
didn’t work, I was able to call either phone when VoiceOver wasn’t working and
each would ring even though there was no speech except me hearing myself when I
would occasionally get that swipe just right and I managed to get a call
connected.

Thus, what I wound up doing in the end, as I certainly

I have an iPhone 11. When I did Shut down after update, no problem. Later in
the week, I did a shut down to see if it would correct my Voiceover problem
when in phone conversation. There was no Voiceover when trying to bring the
phone back up. It took Apple Accessibility and my sighted husband to get things
back in sync.

Apple suggested that if it happened again that they'd like for me to do a, "log
capture," (whatever in the world that is). They gave me some instruction, but
honestly, they don't make much sense to me. Anyway, I don't intend to Power Off
until the next update.

vibrate or make that noise start up sound or whatever it does when you charge
the phone and then maybe VoiceOver might come on, but I don’t know. At any
rate, I’m glad you solved the issue. I just on an iPhone 8 plus and haven't got
that issue yet, what voices does this happen with? This is for my own
curiosity. older voices or newer voices? Or maybe even a combination of both?

On the subject of oddities, with voiceover, why won't the voice I choose for my
Apple watch switch from siri say to Fred for example or Alex? I have watchOS 9.
I wonder if the subject of not getting any speech on the phone happens with
Alex as well sorry for flip-flopping back and forth.

The only workaround I see in regards to the phone, not having speech when
rebooting, it is to actually plug it in to the charger and have the charger
miraculously restart the phone and then possibly tell Siri to turn on voiceover
if voiceover is off and if it’s on already and it’s not speaking, then tell
Siri to turn it off and then turn it on see what happens. just a possibility.
something to try out.

Subject: RE: Another Phone That Won't Talk After Reboot

I had this same thing happen with both my 12 Mini and 13 Mini Friday night, but
I haven’t had the problem with either phone since. I’m using the default
Samantha voice, and I had no problems when upgrading to iOS 16.

With the 13 Mini, I had turned the phone off to get rid of that one unread
message badge I often get now when I receive a text message on one of my phones
and delete it right after reading. Since I have text message forwarding set up
on both of my phones, the phone on which I don’t read the text shows that badge
until I either recover the message I have deleted on the other phone or until I
reboot that phone on which I haven’t read the message.

Oh, although VoiceOver
didn’t work, I was able to call either phone when VoiceOver wasn’t working and
each would ring even though there was no speech except me hearing myself when I
would occasionally get that swipe just right and I managed to get a call
connected.

Thus, what I wound up doing in the end, as I certainly wasn’t going to knock on
a neighbor’s door late at night, was that I went into the Find My app on my 13
Mini, erased the iPhone 12 Mini, and then set up the 12 Mini again restoring it
from the iCloud backup I had thankfully done the day before.

Re: Another Phone That Won't Talk After Reboot

2022-09-20 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I have yet to upgrade, so I can't testth this myself. But when in the
situation where VoiceOver won't talk after a reboot, what happens if you do a
forced restart, and, as it were, start over? If possible, I would connect to
power to restart after the forced restart. If this won't work, then there
really is a problem.

Interesting. Tell him to get screen recognition out of his rotor. Screen
recognition, thankfully, now has different clicks, to show a user they're in
that mode.

Re: Another Phone That Won't Talk After Reboot

2022-09-21 Thread 'Gary Robinson' via VIPhone
I  had this problem when I upgraded my SE20. At first I thought the
upgrade was fine until I  deleted a few  e  mails and the phone crashed.

I had the same problem, no way could I  get the phone to speak at boot
up, eventually I had to get sighted help to input the pass code and
start Voiceover the long way.

I  had a look through settings and noticed that the accessibility
shortcut was turned off, which it most certainly wasn't before the upgrade.

I  went into the shortcut settings, moved Voiceover up to the top,
probably not necessary but I wasn't taking chances and swiped down to
activate double tapped and exited settings.

I  rebooted my phone knowing/hoping that at least the triple click on
the home button should get me running if Voiceover didn't start, but to
my surprise Voiceover came back up as the phone re-started.

I  would suggest that anyone who has experienced this problem double
check their settings just in case.

Interesting. Tell him to get screen recognition out of his rotor. Screen
recognition, thankfully, now has different clicks, to show a user they're in
that mode.

I checked after I got the speech back? And if so, I’m wondering if anybody else
could’ve read my screen had I opted to ask them?

Where do you find Accessibility Shortcuts in Settings?

I had this problem when I upgraded my SE20. At first I thought the upgrade was
fine until I deleted a few e mails and the phone crashed.

I had the same problem, no way could I get the phone to speak at boot up,
eventually I had to get sighted help to input the pass code and start Voiceover
the long way.

I had a look through settings and noticed that the accessibility shortcut was
turned off, which it most certainly wasn't before the upgrade.

I went into the shortcut settings, moved Voiceover up to the top, probably not
necessary but I wasn't taking chances and swiped down to activate double tapped
and exited settings.

I rebooted my phone knowing/hoping that at least the triple click on the home
button should get me running if Voiceover didn't start, but to my surprise
Voiceover came back up as the phone re-started.

I would suggest that anyone who has experienced this problem double check
their settings just in case.

Then check Settings > Accessibility almost at the very bottom, when the
"Accessibility shortcut" is mentioned which is the triple press of the side
button, this has nothing to do with the Shortcuts app.

Unless you have screen curtain on people can read your screen even at 0%
brightness. Maybe not in bright light, but definitely in a room and if
Voiceover was truly off or unloaded then the screen curtain makes no difference
either because as soon as you turn off Voiceover screen curtain is also off.

Then check Settings > Accessibility almost at the very bottom, when the
"Accessibility shortcut" is mentioned which is the triple press of the side
button, this has nothing to do with the Shortcuts app.

Instead of swiping right all the way through all the options you can do a
4-finger single tap on the bottom half of the screen after you go to Settings >
Accessibility. This will take you to the very last item which is "Per App
Settings", now swipe left once and you hear "Accessibility Shortcut".
Double tap on it and select Voiceover, make sure nothing else is selected. Once
you do this a triple press of the home button will turn Voiceover on if it is

Remember you can also press and hold the side button and tell SIRI "Turn on
Voiceover" or "Turn off Voiceover". If you do this and Voiceover is already on
Siri will say "Voiceover is already turned on".
If you don't have sound and Siri tells you Voiceover is on that means most
likely either the speech is muted or the volume is down so low that you can't
hear anything.
If speech is muted which is different from turning Voiceover off completely,
you typically still hear clicks and such if you flick left or right.
The gesture to mute or unmute speech is a double tap with 3 fingers.

Hello Karen,
I had this same issue on an iPhone10r and I did try using an external
braille display (Focus 14 Blue) in my case to try and enter the
passcode to unlock the phone. I was not able to do this and I had to
enter the passcode without sighted help using just the touch screen. I
also tried using Be My Eyes on a second phone without any luck. What
we found was that the screen would lock too quickly for them to try
and read the numbers on it to allow me to enter my passcode so I
finally was able to do this on my own.
I have refrained from rebooting the phone ever since.

I can't remember if this was always possible or if it started at some point in
the last 2-3 years, but you can definitely enter your Pin with a Bluetooth
keyboard if you have one connected to my phone. In my case all I have to do if
my Bluetooth keyboard is connected it to press the spacebar which wakes up the
phone and I can then type in my 6-digit Pin on the numeric pad of my Logitech
K780 and the phone unlocks.
