Hi, if you think of labels as folders, you are good to
go. Gmail by default just puts everything in the all
mail folder. The only real folders in gmail in fact are
all mail, trash, spam, and I think inbox. Everything you receive is
categorized in the inbox and

all mail folder. When you want mail to be sorted in
so-called folders, you just apply a label to it. The
label acts like a folder. So for example, list messages
here for me get the iOS label. In fact they are really
being moved to the all mail folder and out of my inbox
so they don't appear there. However since the iOS label
is applied and since labels are seen as folders by my
windows mail program Thunderbird and by the iPhone mail
app, I just think of labels as folders and folders as
labels. So, when it comes to Google mail, the terms are
interchangeable. So, what I do is go to
http://mail.google.com/mail/h and create filters on my
gmail account. I made one for this list which says that
any mail addressed to viphone skips the inbox and has
the iOS label applied to it. Doing it this way means
that all my mail is sorted accordingly without me having
to worry about rules in Thunderbird or the lack of rules
in iPhone mail.
I hope this makes sense.

Yes, I understand the labels and folders. Just didn't get on with the

To keep this on topic though, I can't think of a way of applying more than
one label to any one message in the mail app and, unless the Gmail app can

Re: Gmail app now has push notifications

2012-07-11 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, if you think of labels as folders, you are good to go. Gmail by
default just puts everything in the all mail folder. The only real
folders in gmail in fact are all mail, trash, spam, and I think inbox.
Everything you receive is categorized in the inbox and all mail folder.
When you want mail to be sorted in so-called folders, you just apply a
label to it. The label acts like a folder. So for example, list
messages here for me get the iOS label. In fact they are really being
moved to the all mail folder and out of my inbox so they don't appear
there. However since the iOS label is applied and since labels are seen
as folders by my windows mail program Thunderbird and by the iPhone mail
app, I just think of labels as folders and folders as labels. So, when
it comes to Google mail, the terms are interchangeable. So, what I do is
go to http://mail.google.com/mail/h and create filters on my gmail
account. I made one for this list which says that any mail addressed to
viphone skips the inbox and has the iOS label applied to it. Doing it
this way means that all my mail is sorted accordingly without me having
to worry about rules in Thunderbird or the lack of rules in iPhone mail.

I hope this makes sense.

Good question, Wayne. As far as I am aware you could
indeed move it to multiple folders from an IMAP account,
but it doesn't sound like a lot of fun! I don't see why
you couldn't apply multiple labels in the native Gmail
app, but haven't explored it enough to give an accurate

Hi Raul, unfortunately Exchange accounts come with a few bugs -
searching doesn't work, it's harder to check other folders, and you

What is the difference between push and pull?

- Original Message -
From: Grant Hardy I don't mean to be too controversial and it's hardly a big deal,
but

do you know how PUSH 4.0 provides push functionality? I only ask
because the Ultimate Notifier app advertizes push functionality

Gmail, and what it actually does is pulls Gmail's ATOM feed every
thirty seconds or so. Of course, that's a pretty darn fast
notification window, and it's super reliable. But in terms of
"push

really fits with the definition.

You can find out what an app is doing by reviewing Gmail's "last

exchange in gmail - was Re: Gmail app now has push notifications

Hello, Grant is correct. I just checked mine and remember now why I have
separated things even on the same email account. So, I have exchange for
contacts only and then I have an imap one for email and calendars. So,
even though both are using the same gmail account, it still works
beautifully. Despite the exchange limitations, syncing contacts does
work like a charm and no issues are made this way.

buttons for each message are at the top of the screen instead of at the
bottom like they are in the default mail app. By default it will show
you a delete button, archive button, and more button. If you choose the
more button, you can do things like reply, Mark as spam, or added as a
label. The way I personally use Gmail, it doesn't require me to be on
the website much to do things like marking messages as spam, editing
labels, or moving things to other folders. So I probably will not be
using this app for very much. I am dictating right now, and I think
what
I meant by the last sentence is that the things that I use Gmail for on
the website, I can still do there without having to use this app. For
typical male reading, replying, and composing, I can still use the
default mail app which comes with the iPhone.

Yes. My technical knowledge doesn't extend far enough to tell you how
exactly the phone maintains contact with the push server, but
basically, rather than having to call out to a server, your phone just
waits for the server to call to the phone! That's much more efficient
for a mobile because it doesn't have to do so much heavy lifting.

Okay, so push notifications let your phone know that there is mail, right?

Part of it, Fred, is honestly just taking the load off your phone and
its battery. If your phone has to check for mail, say, every fifteen
minutes, that's going to eat up a fair chunk of battery. Of course,
exchange works slightly differently; the exchange server actually
"calls" your phone if you will, so your phone doesn't have to "call"

with Gmail exchange and I'm also led to believe that this takes
slightly more battery life than true push notifications pushed to your

For some business people they really do want to know the second they
receive an Email, but I think for most of us it's a balance between
fast checking of Email and taking that load off your battery.

Hello all,

I haven't been following this list a lot lately so if this topic has
already been beaten to death, I apologize in advance - I did a super
quick search of past postings and didn't see it!

For all you Gmail users out there, the Gmail app, while not entirely
accessible in certain respects, now has push alerts for new Emails.
There have been a few alternatives that I've used in the past, such as
the Ultimate Notifier app - which checks mail every thirty seconds -
and setting up a Google Exchange account in Mail - which has a few
bugs. Now, you can have true push notifications for your Gmail
account.

Cheers,

This makes perfect sense to me. Right now, I'm syncing everything in

Re: Gmail app now has push notifications

2012-07-10 Thread Christopher Chaltain
For my part, I see that Exchange can be a bit sluggish when compared to
IMAP, e.g. I'll delete and move a bunch of messages on my phone, and if
I don't give it enough time to sync everything up, I'll still see some
messages when I check my email from my PC. I don't have this problem
when using IMAP. Of course, it could always be that I'm doing something
wrong or that I don't have something set correctly. I've also seen
references on this list, from Grant maybe?, on some limitations in
Exchange over IMAP. Plus, I figure, why involve another server if I
don't need to.

2012-07-10 Thread Grant Hardy
Good question, Wayne. As far as I am aware you could indeed move it to
multiple folders from an IMAP account, but it doesn't sound like a lot
of fun! I don't see why you couldn't apply multiple labels in the
native Gmail app, but haven't explored it enough to give an accurate
answer.

Hi Raul, unfortunately Exchange accounts come with a few bugs -
searching doesn't work, it's harder to check other folders, and you
can't put messages in specific folders properly. It's also not
possible as far as I am aware, to trash messages rather than archiving
them. This is the reason I opted for IMAP rather than exchange.

Re: Gmail app now has push notifications

2012-07-10 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi Christopher, what you can do is set up both an IMAP and an Exchange
account, then in your Exchange account, turn off mail synchronization.
This is an option in the account settings for your exchange account.
So you'll have an exchange account syncing contacts, and a separate
IMAP account for mail. I hope this is clear, it sounds complicated but
this is the way my Google account is set up, and it works like a
charm!

Re: Gmail app now has push notifications

2012-07-10 Thread Wayne Merritt
AS long as we're comparing the mail and Gmail apps, is it possible to
apply multiple labels to a message in both apps? I mainly use Gmail on
a Windows computer and in a web browser. Most of my mail is setup to
have filters applied when new messages come in that fit certain
criteria, like from this list. However, occasionally I may want to
apply more than one label to a message. I don't think this can be done
in the native mail app, since hwen you move a message from the inbox
to a folder, you have applied a label to it. And it doesn't seem wise
to keep moving it from folder to folder just to apply several labels.
I've got a lot of messages in my Gmail system, mainly ones that are
archived, so having multiple labels is a good thing for me to stay
organized.

Wayne

ended up turning off the keyboard and now I am just using the onboard
keyboard on the screen. This is that similar issue that I have
experienced on webpages using Safari when I try to fill in forms. Other
than that, things seem very speech friendly with voiceover. Your action
buttons for each message are at the top of the screen instead of at the
bottom like they are in the default mail app.
I am dictating right now, and I think what
I meant by the last sentence is that the things that I use Gmail for on
the website, I can still do there without having to use this app. For
typical male reading, replying, and composing, I can still use the
default mail app which comes with the iPhone.

There have been a few alternatives that I've used in the past,
such as
the Ultimate Notifier app - which checks mail every thirty seconds -
and setting up a Google Exchange account in Mail - which has a few
bugs. Now, you can have true push notifications for your Gmail
account.

Cheers,

Grant

Re: Gmail app now has push notifications

2012-07-10 Thread Grant Hardy
I don't mean to be too controversial and it's hardly a big deal, but
do you know how PUSH 4.0 provides push functionality? I only ask
because the Ultimate Notifier app advertizes push functionality for
Gmail, and what it actually does is pulls Gmail's ATOM feed every
thirty seconds or so. Of course, that's a pretty darn fast
notification window, and it's super reliable. But in terms of "push
notifications" in the true sense of the word, I wouldn't say this
really fits with the definition.

You can find out what an app is doing by reviewing Gmail's "last
account activity" at the bottom of every Gmail page, including the
plain HTML version.

Hi Grant, I know all of this since that's how I have mine set up. I was
just pointing out the differences between the mail app native to the
iPhone and the gmail app since others were curious.

go into the settings for your mail account you can change the default
behaviour so that mail in the inbox is archived rather than deleted.
Then for those messages that you actually want to trash, simply move
them to the trash folder.

If you use an exchange account - which I don't recommend since there
is less functionality - you can still delete messages, which moves
them to All Mail.

description, so maybe you have control over labels and / or filters. Let
me see now. I just looked it up and here's what it says you can do with
the gmail app.

With the Gmail app, you can:
● Receive notifications for new messages
● Read your mail with threaded conversations
● Organize your mail by archiving, labeling, starring, deleting, and
reporting spam
● Keep track of important messages with priority inbox
● Auto-complete contact names as you type
● Send and receive attachments
● Search through all your mail

So, my guess is the labels and star and spam capabilities are added when
you use the gmail app. I might give it a go to see how Voice Over
friendly it is. It doesn't mention the ability of multiple accounts and
that would be a necessity for me because both my raulgallegos.com email
accounts and my secondary domain accounts are gmail accounts since I use
Google Apps.

Re: Gmail app now has push notifications

Hi Alex, the native mail app doesn't give you true push notifications
unless you set up an exchange account. But if you do do that, then you
lose some functionality. This is why people like to have another app
for true push notifications analogous to what you might get on a
Blackberry device.

I have a Gmail account and use it in the regular E-mail app. I get
notifications when the mail comes in. Why would I want the Gmail app over
this? With the screen readers, this might come out as sarcastic which is not

my intention. I really want to know, smiles.

There have been a few alternatives that I've used in the past, such as
the Ultimate Notifier app - which checks mail every thirty seconds -
and setting up a Google Exchange account in Mail - which has a few
bugs. Now, you can have true push notifications for your Gmail
account.

Cheers,

Grant

Re: Gmail app now has push notifications

2012-07-10 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, since you replied to me, I assume the question was directed toward
me. You know what they say about assuming, so in any case, I don't know
since I don't use the app and I haven't found a need to since the mail
app works just fine for me. I haven't looked at the actual gmail app
description, so maybe you have control over labels and / or filters. Let
me see now. I just looked it up and here's what it says you can do with
the gmail app.

With the Gmail app, you can:
● Receive notifications for new messages
● Read your mail with threaded conversations
● Organize your mail by archiving, labeling, starring, deleting, and
reporting spam

● Keep track of important messages with priority inbox
● Auto-complete contact names as you type
● Send and receive attachments
● Search through all your mail

So, my guess is the labels and star and spam capabilities are added when
you use the gmail app. I might give it a go to see how Voice Over
friendly it is. It doesn't mention the ability of multiple accounts and
that would be a necessity for me because both my raulgallegos.com email
accounts and my secondary domain accounts are gmail accounts since I use
Google Apps.

Re: Gmail app now has push notifications

2012-07-10 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, I don't know how well the gmail app works. I've always used the
built-in mail app with the phone and haven't needed anything else. If I
ever have to manage anything with my gmail account, I use Safari and go
to http://mail.google.com/mail/h for the basic layout of the page.
