Re: iPhone verses iPad

2018-05-18 Thread Mary Otten
Well, I always use my mini in portrait mode. Same when I had my old iPad
original version. And no, the mail doesn’t work like it does on the phone. Your
landscape mode sounds better, because at least you have the message on the
right side of the screen I guess, based on my understanding of your
description. I guess I just like it having a list of messages and then I can do
what I want in there and if I want to read one, I just double tap. I think it
reminds me of more how I do mail on the PC. Go through the list, see something
I want, and press insert down arrow in my case to read the message with
Thunderbird.

This is why I make heavy use of containers on the iPad, especially in the
settings app. It makes navigating to the item you have chosen much easier.

I mainly use my iPad for reading books. Where it makes a difference to me
as opposed to using my iPhone is when reading Kindle books. There is a
noticeable pause when switching pages, so it doesn't seem as intrusive to me
since with the larger screen, the pauses are less frequent.

All a matter of what works best for the individual.

I have a 2017 referbished iPAD as well as an iPHONE7. Frankly, things are a
lot more frustrating for me on the iPAD. I find myself strongly gravitating
to my iPHONE for pretty much everything other than consuming audio or binge
reading. For instance, it's nice to be able to listen to internet radio
without burning though my iPOD batteries and taking up my iPHONE. That
leaves the iPHONE free for other things. However, if I'm working, or want to
be ready to do other things while listening or reding, I'll use my iPHONE.
Other than easier use of Braille screen input, I can't think of any
advantages to using an iPAD other than the headphone jak.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the layouts of a whole lot of apps and
things are very different as the designers attempt to use the extra space in
the best way for sighted users. It can feel like starting from square one
despite using the exact same apps and operating system as on your phone. I'm
still glad I was able to get the iPAD due to the guide I'm in the process of
writing. I'll be able to pint all this out and give exaples so my readers
will hopefully make a more informed decision. I have a lot of spacial
perceptin issues so that's doubtless a big part of why I so strongly prefer
my iPHONE's smaller size. The smaller size does force app designers to
separate apps into different tabs. The Settings app where you configure your
iOS device is a prime example. The iPAd layout has everything in a tree
format with branches expanding overtop of things when selected. Everything
else still remains on the screen. On the iPHONE, the instant you double-tap
on a setting area, everything else goes away and you can get right to what
you want. When finished, the "back" button gets you out of where you've
drilled down into.

Mary,

My experience with mail on the iPad has been similar to yours. In fact
it was the change you mentioned in which a two finger flick up reads a
bunch of stuff before the message that ended my reading of mail on the
iPad. I still don't know why that change was made.

I would also be very interested in hearing how mail can be efficiently
managed on the larger screen.

Wonder if this is orientation related, I always do mail, indeed most things on
the iPad, in landscape mode. From scratch, I think
it will open in the default mailbox and in a message, but there's a button in
the top/left which always points back up a level.
When I'm at mailboxes, I open the Unread one, and then I have a list down the
left side column with all unread message threads. A
thread will open to a new side list with one message open, but sidebar of
message list is still down the left side. I tend to
touch middle of the message area, then do a 2-finger flip up to read from the
top, and then touch the left side again when I've
heard enough and choose a new message. I go back to top/left corner for the
button to back up a level and can flick up on that
thread and double-tap delete to lose the whole thread, and carry on down other
unread stuff. This is how I get through mail on the
old iPad mini and have done since I first had one.

I hear the mail will work like the phone if you stand it up in portrait mode.

RE: iPhone verses iPad

2018-05-17 Thread Alan Lemly
Mary,

I'm like you and am curious why a larger screen without usable vision makes the
learning curve any different for the mail app. I've never used an iPad but
others I've spoken with say the larger screen makes things more difficult to
navigate with Voiceover especially when the screen is split in some apps. I
hope Merv will respond with some specifics. I guess if you're learning VO
gestures for the first time and have motor control issues, having a larger
screen on which to swipe might make things easier.

I find your statement that email on the iPad is easier than it is on the phone
fascinating. I despise email on the iPad. I had the original iPad, and I have
an iPad mini. And I never use it for mail unless my phone is totally dead.
Mostly, this is because whenever I open the app, it never puts me in the
message list. It always puts me in a message. I spend a lot of time in the
list, only reading those things that I want to read. The iPad is good for
somethings, but I would really be curious why you think the mail app is so
wonderful on it. My experience has been so opposite. One other thing, and I don
t think it s been fixed on the iPad. When you open a message to read it, on the
phone, a two finger flick up gets you only the message text, that is, the thing
you want to read. On the iPad, you get a lot of extra junk before you get the
text. Unless that has recently changed which is possible, because I haven t

RE: iPhone verses iPad

2018-05-17 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,
I teach both iPhone and iPad. Email is absolutely fantastic on the larger
screen. Even with no useable vision. I have helped people who had absolutely no
experience with computers or iDevices learn to use both their iPhone and iPad.
And the larger screen makes some applications very easy to learn. Including the
native mail app. Because it is spread out and there is less of a learning curve
for older adults when learning IOS for the first time.
Some games are also very nice on the larger screen even with no useable vision.
I have seen some amazing things done on the larger amount of real estate.
I can't wait to update my Mini 4 in a month or two to a larger iPad as soon as
it is eligible.

RE: IPhone versess IPad

2018-05-17 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
This is why I make heavy use of containers on the iPad, especially in the
settings app. It makes navigating to the item you have chosen much easier.

I mainly use my iPad for reading books. Where it makes a difference to me as
opposed to using my iPhone is when reading Kindle books. There is a noticeable
pause when switching pages, so it doesn't seem as intrusive to me since with
the larger screen, the pauses are less frequent.

All a matter of what works best for the individual.

I have a 2017 referbished iPAD as well as an iPHONE7. Frankly, things are a lot
more frustrating for me on the iPAD. I find myself strongly gravitating to my
iPHONE for pretty much everything other than consuming audio or binge reading.
For instance, it's nice to be able to listen to internet radio without burning
though my iPOD batteries and taking up my iPHONE. That leaves the iPHONE free
for other things. However, if I'm working, or want to be ready to do other
things while listening or reding, I'll use my iPHONE. Other than easier use of
Braille screen input, I can't think of any advantages to using an iPAD other
than the headphone jak.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the layouts of a whole lot of apps and
things are very different as the designers attempt to use the extra space in
the best way for sighted users. It can feel like starting from square one
despite using the exact same apps and operating system as on your phone. I'm
still glad I was able to get the iPAD due to the guide I'm in the process of
writing. I'll be able to pint all this out and give exaples so my readers will
hopefully make a more informed decision. I have a lot of spacial perceptin
issues so that's doubtless a big part of why I so strongly prefer my iPHONE's
smaller size. The smaller size does force app designers to separate apps into
different tabs. The Settings app where you configure your iOS device is a prime
example. The iPAd layout has everything in a tree format with branches
expanding overtop of things when selected. Everything else still remains on the
screen. On the iPHONE, the instant you double-tap on a setting area, everything
else goes away and you can get right to what you want. When finished, the
"back" button gets you out of where you've drilled down into.

RE: IPhone versess IPad

2018-05-17 Thread Cristóbal
The sighted wife has pretty much adopted her 2017 model iPad Pro as a third
arm, but she’s a huge consumer of visual media and uses it for businesses
purposes as well. The phone thing to her isn’t as important as if she wants to
“look” at something, she’ll prefer to do it on the larger screen iPad and not
her small SE. The phone she more or less just uses it as an actual phone. Maybe
when she’s out and about to scan stuff like ShopKick or other rewards type of
apps, but for that, she doesn’t need a huge screen or the latest camera phone.

Whereas I on the other hand would be lost without my iPhone and am most likely
going to upgrade to either whatever Apple’s got coming out this year. Be it the
new SE if it actually comes out, the new iPhones that usually appear in
September or maybe pick up one of last year’s models if I’m not convinced by
what’s coming out this year and the price tag.

In my case, I’d prefer to allocate my money on a better phone and not bother
with a tablet that I’m probably not going to use. Whereas my wife is perfectly
happy with her SE and has no desire to upgrade her iPhone any time soon since
she’d prefer to have an iPad.

I do have a second iPhone for business purposes that I will sometimes use to
stream music or baseball while working out or if I’m on the treadmill or as an
extra timer or whatnot, but it’s an old beat up 5S and it gets the job done.

The few times I’ve borrowed her iPad, I’ve been reminded why I don’t want one.
It is so easy to get lost on the screen trying to find something and typing
while you think would be easier since the keyboard is larger, it just makes it
that much harder to find the key you want to press. That and forget about using
it one handed or somewhere where you’re not stationary or sitting down.

Remember that having an iPhone, iPad and laptop for most people is overkill.
Sure, it is nice to have all this stuff, but I don’t see any need for an iPad
in my life, I use my iPhone all the time and the argument that I want phone
calls interrupting me or that I want to save my iPhone battery to me at least
don’t make sense. If I am listening to an audio book on an iPad and I get a
phone call I want to take it interrupts me anyways and in fact if I am
listening on the iPad I first have to pause the iPad whereas on my iPhone
whatever is playing pauses automatically when the phone rings and resumes again
when I’m done. As for battery I just get a new one put in should it gert to the
point where it doesn’t hold it’s charge any more, it’s a lot cheaper than
spending $500 or more on an Ipad. If I am travelling there isn’t that much I
can’t do on my iPhone compared to an iPad. I can see that if you use braille
input the large iPad might be good, but if I really want to be able to type a
lot I can just bring a bluetooth keyboard and use my iPhone. Some people also
make the point about sound quality being bertter on an iPad and that is
probably true due to it’s larger speakers which can be further apart, but you
can just as easily use a bluetooth speaker if you want good sound quality. This
has the added benefit that you can get one that is waterproof so if like me you
listen to a lot of audio books you can bring it into the shower or outside etc.
I am doing a fair bit of work outside right now getting my garden and yard into
shape after a long and very snowy winter and I also do some woodworking either
in my shop downstairs or outside and I can just have my iPhone in a safe spot
in my belt case or put somewhere nearby and use my very tough dust and
waterproof bluetooth speaker. If I am using any woodworking power tools which
are noisy I wear ear protection anyways and I have a set of ear protection
which have bluetooth as wel as a built-in FM radio so I can listen to the radio
or my book or music on my iPhone. If you buy an iPad it’s another expensive
device which you have to maintain and upgrade every 3 to 5 years, it won’t
replace your iPhone so now you have to maintain and upgrade two devices. I also
have an Apple Watch which I like because of the fitness/health application and
to me that is more useful than an iPad and as it’s a piece of technology which
also has a finite time before it needs to be upgraded, if you now have an
iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch then things are starting to get really expensive.

Hi,

In what situations does an IPad have advantages over an IPone or a laptop

Thanks.

2018-05-17 Thread Kimber Gardner
I think it really depends on what you are doing. There are still tasks
I find easier to accomplish on a laptop, but I think that is more a
windows vs mac situation.

I use my iPad and my iPhone almost interchangeably except that my
phone is with me all the time and my iPad is not.

I guess that isn't especially helpful. Lol! If you have some specific
tasks in mind I can try to address your questions.

Re: IPhone versess IPad

2018-05-17 Thread Vicki W.
I can't speak for everyone, but in my case, my mini IPad, because it is smaller
than my laptop or desktop computer, works very nicely when I am traveling.

If I want to read for awhile or listen to a podcast, it is also more convenient
to use at night after I have gone to bed.

I could use my phone, but I don't like phone calls interrupting what I am doing
on my mini IPad.

Re: Iphone and ipad cases again, Please, I need your hellp

2015-10-09 Thread englishrider91
Well, I can't speak with any authority on the new Otterbox cases because I
haven't actually used one myself, but from the brief look I got of an Otterbox
Defender, the outer rubber seems thicker and less likely to pick up lint. Also,
screens shattering has more to do with how the phone lands than anything else.
If the phone lands face-down, and the surface it lands on is completely flat,
you should be fine. On the other hand, if the surface has anything sticking up
out of it, say, like a rock, that can touch your phone's screen
when it lands face-down—that's when you might have problems. I saw the Otterbox
Defender on an iPhone 6 or 6S. It looked a little slimmer than the Defender I
had on my 4 and 4S, but I could just be misremembering what the one I used felt
like. I've been using the Griffin Surviver on my 4S ever since the Defender
bit the dust after three years of very hard use, but I don't like it as much as
the Defender.

1. I can't charge the iPhone when the Surviver is on my belt. The clip blocks
the charger port.

2. You may or may not see this as an advantage, but there's a little rubber
flap covering the back-facing camera on the Surviver. Granted, I knew about the
cover before purchasing the Surviver, but I dinn't know how utterly annoying
I'd find it. The protection for the back-facing camera the Defender uses is
adequate for me. It's definitely protected in the Defender, so that's not a
worry. The mamera cover on the Surviver is to protect against dust.
3. I find it hard to put the phone into the Surviver's clip one-handed. I could
pretty easily do this with the Defender, but not the Surviver. Your milage may
varry, of course. The problem is that you have to line up the clip with a notch
in the case, and then press on the other side of the case, where the other
notch is located, to secure the case in the clip. This is also why you canan't
charge the phone while it's in the case—the notch where the clip rests rather
handily blocks access to the charging port—unlike the Defender, where the case
is secured to the clip at the side ofthe phone instead of the bottom and top. I
hope this description makes since. If not, I highly recommend going to a store,
perhaps where you buy your phone, and see if the staff will let you look at the
Surviver (if they have it) and compare it to the Defender. From what I've seen,
both brands are pretty popular.

Another well-regarded brand is Sedio. I'm not sure if I spelled that correctly.
You might want to see if you can have a look an one of their belt-clip cases.

Thanks,
Ari

I have personally used dozens of cases and my favorite one of all and the
one I will always use is the Speck Products CandyShell grip case. Feels
great in the hand and is very classy looking. Amazon has many of them in
different colors. Doesn't add much at all to the size of the Iphone.

Re: Iphone and ipad cases again, Please, I need your hellp

2015-10-09 Thread Feliciano Godoy
Hi, I enjoy using the otter box defender cases on my iPhones. The defender case
I had on my iPhone 4s was good then it started to get where and tear and became
a bit flimsy. The construction of the defender case on the iPhone 5 what's
different, the material was better and I did not experience the flimsiness
like I did on the iPhone 4s case. No I have the iPhone 6s with the defender
case, it is great, has the same material construction as the defender case for
the iPhone 5, but is obviously bigger in size and a bit thinner as the iPhone
6s is a thinner device. The only problem that I have to report is that the new
Amazon basics iPhone cables do not plug into the defender case for the iPhone
6s when it did in the iphone 5s and 5 models. However, the previous model of
the Amazon basics cable does fit the defender case for the iPhone 6s. Other
than that, when I had of the defender case on the iPhone 4s and iPhone 5, the
phone was well protected and withstood several drops.

I do have a very specific aspect though. I already have an iPhone. I think I

1. Is document editing going to be faster?

2. What about switching between apps?

3. Is it possible to use Command + Tab to switch between apps on the iPad,
or is it still necessary to go through the App Switcher? Dumb questions I
know, but I'm picky that way.

I would really appreciate your advice and thoughts. I get most of what I
want on the iPhone. I would take my own advice of just buying an Air to get
the full experience, but laptops aren't allowed at my work site. Ironically,
iPads are allowed in limited circumstances. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I'm answering in context of your questions.

Yeah, don't shoot me for asking the same question others have already asked.
Bang! (Just kidding.)
I do have a very specific aspect though. I already have an iPhone. I think
I have found a good combination of apps to help me do document editing
during my commute with my Apple Bluetooth keyboard. I want to know if an
iPad would in any way enhance my experience.

1. Is document editing going to be faster?

Not in my experience.

2. What about switching between apps?

The only difference that I can see is that there is a gesture to bring up
the app switcher on the iPad and then a gesture for switching between apps.
Four finger swipe up opens the app switcher and then four finger swipe left
or right will flick through the apps in the app switcher. You might save a
few seconds, but is that worth the expense? That is up to you.

3. Is it possible to use Command + Tab to switch between apps on the iPad,
or is it still necessary to go through the App Switcher?

Same as on the iPhone.

Dumb questions I know, but I'm picky that way.

The only dumb question is the one that isn't asked.

HTH,

Richard

I wonder how much different holding the IPad mini to your ear would be
than some of what these android people insist on for screen size on
their phones! I'm not completely kidding.

 Sieghard,

Although I agree with you that it is an individual choice, I believe it
 is
important to point out that screen size is not the only difference. Apps
 on
the iPhone and iPad will in most cases have a different layout. For
 example,
the Mail app on the iPad shows the mailboxes or messages on the left half
 of
the screen and the contents of the message on the right. This can be very
useful for rapidly scanning through mail when you want to do more than
 just
run through the subject lines. The size of the screen means that you can
 put
more content on the screen and in some cases this can be helpful in
 cutting
down on the number of times you have to tap through to find features or
 perform certain functions.
What may change this by reducing the overall screen size, yet keeping the
layout benefits of the iPad is the iPad Mini.
So, it has a lot more to do with screen size and you really have to
determine what your workflow is. I have both devices and find that each
 has
its benefits. In fact with the TouchFire keyboard, I can easily use my
 iPad
as a mobile option and type quite easily on it. I would not say I'd like
 to
type an entire book on it, but hey it would not be impossible either. THe
nice thing about having the iPad, iPad Mini, iPhone, etc. is the fact that
you have options and will have a device that meets your needs. Ok, well
holding an iPad to your ear would look pretty odd, so it would not make a
 good phone. :) ha ha

 Hi Tom,

Whether you would benefit from an iPad is really something you have to
answer for yourself. The main difference, of course, is the size of the
iPad. Some find it harder to orient themselves on the much larger iPad
screen and for a blind person I am not sure if an iPad makes as much
 sense
as for a sighted person who can really enjoy the awesome almost 10 inch
retina display on the iPad third Gen and fourth Gen.

Due to the increased size the iPad speaker sounds a big fuller and louder
but this of course is easy to fix by using an external speaker either
wired, Bluetooth or airplay with your iPhone.

Of course now you have the choice of the iPad Mini as well which has a
 7.9
inch instead of a 9.7 inch screen. This doesn’t sound like much of a
difference, only just under 2 inches, but the device is quite a bit
 smaller, thinner and lighter.

I could go on and on emphasizing this or that which speaks in favour of
the large iPad which now is called the iPad with retina screen, the iPad
Mini or for that matter the fifth generation iPod Touches which are also
very nice devices. Equally I could argue that if you have an iPhone 4S or
5 you really don’t need anything else. Ultimately it’s your choice
 whether
you need or want 2 iDevices and, if you decide you do, then just go to an
Apple store and ask them to show you the iPad, iPad Mini and iPod
 Touches.
It’s easy to turn on Voiceover so you can spend some time with each and
make up your mind which you like best.

 Sieghard

I do not understand what you mean by not being convinced that the iPad
offers nothing to a VI that the iPhone does not. The fact is you have to

Re: IPhone and IPad

2012-10-31 Thread Scott Howell
Mary,

I have an iPad 2. Apple shorten the delay when lifting your finger in iOS 6, so
turning VO off does give you the fastest possible speed for typing; however,
iOS 6 with the reduced delay really makes it a pleasure to use. Btw, when VO is
off and you are typing you still hear the clicks.
So, unfortunately you do need an iPad 2 or greater to get iOS 6 and yes that
was a bummer. My wife has the original iPad, but she is not a VO user.

 Scott,

Which model ipad do you have? I have the original, and I find that typing on
the regular keyboard is a bit laggy between when I touch a key, vo says the
letter and I raise my finger to get the letter printed on the screen. This is
compared with my 4S and its faster processor. I'm just wondering how that lag
might relate to speedy typing on this touch fire keyboard. Although you did
say you could turn vo off. I'd want to hear clicks or something to be sure my
letter presses were registering, or something.

Then I recommend you set aside the (what seems to be emotional aspect) of this
decision and consider what you already indicated and that is you would likely
not use it. So, if you really believe you would not use the iPad Mini, then
save your money. If you just sold an iPad because you did not use it, then it
is unlikely you will feel any different after a while of using the iPad Mini.
In fact I would say go have a look at one, walk away for a few days if not a
week, and then consider whether you would want one then or if nothing else, go
bak and have another look.

I feel the same way. I gave my iPad 1 to a friend; yeah, I liked it okay but it
wasn't doing anything for me that my iPhone couldn't do and the iPhone was
right there with me. As for the benefits of the different layouts, that's a
very individual thing; one person's benefit may be another person's curse! And
the person who hasn't embraced what may be benefits isn't going to be
convinced; that's just a matter of personal preference. But I also am drawn by
the idea of the mini and keep giving myself lectures about how I gave away the
other iPad. Maybe the mini would carve its own niche in my life, but I have to
decide whether that's really the best expenditure of my limited financial

Re: IPhone and IPad

2012-10-31 Thread Katey Glass
I have to agree with what others have said, what is useful for one may
not be useful for another. I have an iPhone 4S and an iPad 3, and I'm
a low vision user. I'm also a primary VO user, but, on the iPad there
are times I use Zoom and sometimes use nothing (granted that's for
playing games like Tetris, Words with Friends and Scrabble). However,
now that I think about it, if I want to see something small on the
screen on either Scrabble or Words With Friends I use Zoom as I keep
it running all the time -- since iOS 6.

However, for myself, I've found that I rather enjoy being able to sit
on the couch and surf the net, read emails and play games as well as
the occational Skype call. Now, my iPad is significantly newer than
my desktop PC and even my laptop so surfing the web is much smoother
and easier! Plus, the portability is awesome! Ive found myself
using it in Church to read along (OK with VO as if I had it enlarged
enough for me to read I'd be lost!) and also once I got the power
points emailed to me for the words in church and was able to use them
instead of my monocular looking at the front screen.

Sizewise it's much lighter than my laptop -- circa 2008. Plus I can
hold it up close to my face if I need to for short durations.

Now, I do use my iPhone on the go, for surfing and reading emails as
well, but the battery drains much faster than my iPad. Maybe it's
because the iPad has a larger battery or maybe it's because the iPad
doesn't have a cellular radio as I have a WiFi model.

So, therefore for myself I find myself using my iPad a lot as well as
my iPhone. As has been stated it's a personal choice and of course
there are battery backups for the iPhone -- one can get a case or an
external backup which I have but it's heavy and I usually only carry
it on trips where I may not be able to charge my phone for a long time
such as on a driving trip on the Grayhound bus. But... newer buses
have plugs but I don't count on them totally! LOL

Hope this helps someone. Feel free to ask me any questions.

RE: IPhone and IPad

2012-10-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Tom,

Whether you would benefit from an iPad is really something you have to
answer for yourself. The main difference, of course, is the size of the
iPad. Some find it harder to orient themselves on the much larger iPad
screen and for a blind person I am not sure if an iPad makes as much sense
as for a sighted person who can really enjoy the awesome almost 10 inch
retina display on the iPad third Gen and fourth Gen.

Due to the increased size the iPad speaker sounds a big fuller and louder
but this of course is easy to fix by using an external speaker either wired,
Bluetooth or airplay with your iPhone.

Of course now you have the choice of the iPad Mini as well which has a 7.9
inch instead of a 9.7 inch screen. This doesn't sound like much of a
difference, only just under 2 inches, but the device is quite a bit smaller,
thinner and lighter.

I could go on and on emphasizing this or that which speaks in favour of the
large iPad which now is called the iPad with retina screen, the iPad Mini or
for that matter the fifth generation iPod Touches which are also very nice
devices. Equally I could argue that if you have an iPhone 4S or 5 you really
don't need anything else. Ultimately it's your choice whether you need or
want 2 iDevices and, if you decide you do, then just go to an Apple store
and ask them to show you the iPad, iPad Mini and iPod Touches. It's easy to
turn on Voiceover so you can spend some time with each and make up your mind
which you like best.

Regards,

Sieghard

Re: IPhone and IPad

On 30/10/2012 11:01, Scott Howell wrote:

Sieghard,

Although I agree with you that it is an individual choice, I believe it is
important to point out that screen size is not the only difference. Apps on the
iPhone and iPad will in most cases have a different layout. For example, the
Mail app on the iPad shows the mailboxes or messages on the left half of the
screen and the contents of the message on the right. This can be very useful
for rapidly scanning through mail when you want to do more than just run
through the subject lines. The size of the screen means that you can put more
content on the screen and in some cases this can be helpful in cutting down on
the number of times you have to tap through to find features or perform certain
functions.
What may change this by reducing the overall screen size, yet keeping the
layout benefits of the iPad is the iPad Mini.
So, it has a lot more to do with screen size and you really have to determine
what your workflow is. I have both devices and find that each has its benefits.
In fact with the TouchFire keyboard, I can easily use my iPad as a mobile
option and type quite easily on it. I would not say I'd like to type an entire
book on it, but hey it would not be impossible either. THe nice thing about
having the iPad, iPad Mini, iPhone, etc. is the fact that you have options and
will have a device that meets your needs. Ok, well holding an iPad to your ear
would look pretty odd, so it would not make a good phone. :) ha ha

Re: IPhone and IPad

2012-10-30 Thread Rob Harris
Ok, this is a preference and competence thing between more content or is it
more complication or confusion to wade through. I just sold my old iPad, I
still got the old iPhones. Garage Band and watching Video with some degree
of sight would benefit from larger screen, that's about all. I still
think the Pad is just a big Pod; so GPS is largely out and unless you pay
a big wadge extra, so is 3g or 4g cellular networking. So you can't use it
as much away from the home base for the wifi.

Sieghard,

Although I agree with you that it is an individual choice, I believe it is
important to point out that screen size is not the only difference. Apps on
the iPhone and iPad will in most cases have a different layout. For example,
the Mail app on the iPad shows the mailboxes or messages on the left half of
the screen and the contents of the message on the right. This can be very
useful for rapidly scanning through mail when you want to do more than just
run through the subject lines. The size of the screen means that you can put
more content on the screen and in some cases this can be helpful in cutting
down on the number of times you have to tap through to find features or
perform certain functions.
What may change this by reducing the overall screen size, yet keeping the
layout benefits of the iPad is the iPad Mini.
So, it has a lot more to do with screen size and you really have to
determine what your workflow is. I have both devices and find that each has
its benefits. In fact with the TouchFire keyboard, I can easily use my iPad
as a mobile option and type quite easily on it. I would not say I'd like to
type an entire book on it, but hey it would not be impossible either. THe
nice thing about having the iPad, iPad Mini, iPhone, etc. is the fact that
you have options and will have a device that meets your needs. Ok, well
holding an iPad to your ear would look pretty odd, so it would not make a
good phone. :) ha ha

Due to the increased size the iPad speaker sounds a big fuller and louder

Of course now you have the choice of the iPad Mini as well which has a 7.9

difference, only just under 2 inches, but the device is quite a bit
 smaller, thinner and lighter.

I could go on and on emphasizing this or that which speaks in favour of

Mini or for that matter the fifth generation iPod Touches which are also

you need or want 2 iDevices and, if you decide you do, then just go to an
Apple store and ask them to show you the iPad, iPad Mini and iPod Touches.

Also, It is very different looking at web pages using the iPad's display. With

Re: IPhone and IPad

2012-10-30 Thread Mary Otten
There are some apps whose interfaces are different on the iPhone and iPod on
one hand and iPad on the other. Somebody already talked about the mail app as
an example. Settings is another one. Zite, the news aggregator is another. And
then there are some apps that are iPad only, such as the one from linktv that
just came out today. I think the iPad mini is going to be just the thing for
the future iPad purchase I will make when my first generation iPad dies.
Haven't seen one yet. But I like the idea of the smaller screen but keeping the
possibility of different interfaces. Sometimes the phone is better, as is the
case for my local newspaper and the new york Times, which are totally not
accessible on the iPad, but perfectly fine on the phone. And sometimes, it is
the other way around.

I do not understand what you mean by not being convinced that the iPad offers
nothing to a VI that the iPhone does not. The fact is you have to understand
the differences to appreciate how either can benefit anyone regardless of their

Re: IPhone and IPad

2012-10-30 Thread Scott Howell
Mary,

The TouchFire was a Kickstarter project. The TouchFire is a keyboard overlay
that goes over the onscreen keyboard of the iPad. The idea is to provide you a
more tactile experience when typing. The TouchFire works very well and you can
get a lot more info at http://www.touchfire.com.
Basically the TouchFire is a rubbery-type material that has nibs that face the
screen of the iPad (has bumps on F and J) and is held in place by magnets. As
you touch the screen it activates the characters when you are using the touch
typing mode. I really like it and I have been able to even turn VO off so I can
really type up a storm. Of course the error rate goes up a little. :)
Really nice alternative to the bluetooth keyboard.

Although you did say
you could turn vo off. I'd want to hear clicks or something to be sure my
letter presses were registering, or something.

Re: iPhone and iPad Charging question.

2012-05-02 Thread Esther
Hi Debbie,

While you can use the iPhone charger for your iPad, you'll find that your iPad
will charge very slowly. The iPad draws 10 watts of power while the iPhone or
iPod Touch will draw 5 watts. That means that the iPad charger can be used to
charge an iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or even a Nano at its maximum charging
rate. On the other hand, while the iPhone charger can charge an iPad, you'll
find that it will take much longer to reach a full charge. Here's a link to
the Apple Knowledge Base article about iPhone and iPod: Using the iPad 10W USB
Power Adapter:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4327
It states: The iPad USB Power Adapter is a 10W charger. While designed for use
with the iPad, you can use the iPad 10W USB Power Adapter to charge all iPhone
and iPod models by connecting them using a Dock Connector to USB cable.

If I were traveling and only wanted to take one charger to use with both my
iPhone and my iPad, I would take the charger for my iPad.

This is also the general rule for power adapters for the Apple computers: you
can use a power adapter that is rated to supply more power than your computer
requires without problems, but not the other way around. So you can use the
power bricks for the MacBook Pro laptops in place of the smaller power bricks
of the MacBook Air models, but not vice versa if you need a reliable power
source.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

iPhone and iPod models by connecting them using a Dock Connector to USB
cable.

If I were traveling and only wanted to take one charger to use with both my
iPhone and my iPad, I would take the charger for my iPad.

This is also the general rule for power adapters for the Apple computers:
you can use a power adapter that is rated to supply more power than your
computer requires without problems, but not the other way around. So you
can use the power bricks for the MacBook Pro laptops in place of the smaller
power bricks of the MacBook Air models, but not vice versa if you need a
reliable power source.

Re: iPhone and iPad Charging question.

2012-05-02 Thread Esther
Hi Lois,

For iPhone and iPad models purchased in the US, the chargers that come with the
devices are different. The iPhone or iPod Touch charger is a two-pronged cube,
while the iPad charger is shaped like a miniature version of the power bricks
used for the Apple computer. I think that outside the US and Canada the
current USB charger for the iPhone used for the UK is shaped like a power plug
with the three prongs, and a slot to plug in the usb connector end of the
charging cable.

So, in general, the charger for the iPad should be larger than the charger that
comes with the iPhone or iPod Touch. However, if you purchase an Apple World
Travel Adapter kit these now come with a USB charger as well as
interchangeable plug heads for different countries. And that USB charger is
the 10 watt rated charger that comes with the iPad, since it can be used with
all portable iOS devices. If the charger that comes with your iPhone is
exactly the same size as the charger that come with your iPad, and you're not
in the US or Canada, then perhaps these are interchangeable. Otherwise, I'd
expect the two to be different in size, with the charger for the iPhone being
smaller. You would also not be able to use an extension cable with the current
chargers for the iPhone, although you could with the iPad. This is the longer
cord that comes with the power bricks of Apple computers. You can pull off the
plug adapter of the USB charger, and connect the extension power cord to it.
The USB chargers that come with iPads sold in the US just come with the plug
heads where two prongs flip down, so you can plug the charger into an
electrical socket. However, if you purchase a separate iPad charger, it will
be sold with the extension power cord.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

 Hi Debbie,

While you can use the iPhone charger for your iPad, you'll find that your

iPhone or iPod Touch will draw 5 watts. That means that the iPad charger can
be used to charge an iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or even a Nano at its maximum

Re: iPhone versus iPad?

2012-04-20 Thread Kevin Barry

It's fair to say most IOS apps of any kind are highly visual in nature.
That doesn't mean that they are more or less accessible because of it.

When I signed up for iBooks, I think I saw that the interactive text

remember someone saying that by default the iPhone brings up the mobile
version of a web site while the iPad brings up the normal site.

Re: My thoughts on an iPad and iPhone was RE: iPhone versus iPad?

2012-04-19 Thread Sieghard
Hi Debbie,

I just wanted to correct you on one point just so people who read your
post aren't confused. As of the release of the iPhone 4S last October,
you can get a 64 Gig iPhone, so getting an iPad mainly because you
want more space is not necessary any more. There were rumours that the
new iPad may come in a 128 Gig version but that has, of course, not
happened.

I personally find the larger screen size can be good and bad. Yes, the
keyboard is much bigger and sometimes it's nice to have that extra
space, but the screen layout is also different in some cases and when
I bought an iPad for my Mom last year I used it for about 2 weeks to
set it up and so on and I sometimes found it harder to find stuff on
the screen because it is larger. This probably is a matter of
practice, but I don't see much of a point in owning both an iPhone and
iPad, but that's just my opinion.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: iPhone versus iPad?

2012-04-19 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

Most apps that are just made exclusively for the iPad are done to take
advantage of the larger display. So, I think its fair to say that These apps
are often highly visual in nature? And I've been using IOS since 2009, and
have bought a lot of apps. Its been my experience that the more an app
developer goes for stunning graphics, etc etc, there is a less likely hood of
it being accessible with voiceover. I do not think this is a grand over
generalization. Its not like I said, most people in the U.S. will buy a pair
of pants. Sigh.

Not so, you can hit the 2x button and have it expand to take up the
whole screen.

Resolution will not improve but it will use more of the screen.

 Hi

I have used an iPhone as well as my iPad and I can tell you that the iPad
is a lot easier to use than the iPhone as the screen has a lot more room for
gestures and the keyboard is much bigger which makes typing a lot quicker.
Another advantage is that it can come with up to 64 GB of storage double the
highest amount the iPhone provides. As well the sound is even clear than the
iPhone which is saying something as the iPhone has quite good sound.

Also if you want a laptop-like experience with your iPad you can get a
case with a built-in Bluetooth keyboard. I don't think Apple sell them but
I've googled for them and they are quite a few cases out that that do that
sort of thing.

Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is a lovely phone and that's what I will be
getting quite soon but if you are wanting something with more power and ease
of use for navigating the screen and keyboard then the iPad is for you. In
fact I think that it would complement the iPhone quite nicely. I know I sure
am looking forward to having both an iPad and an iPhone.

Re: iPhone versus iPad?

2012-04-18 Thread Nancy M
One difference between the two devices is that the iPhone can vibrate,
the iPad cannot

If you suffer from hearing impairment, this may be significant.

The iPhone has an option for using vibrate to announce phone calls and
vibration is available to the designer as a signaling option. We use
the vibration, for instance, to indicate that a bar code was found
during scanning and is being sent to the host for resolution.

On the iPad, this instruction is ignored by the device and no
vibration is produced.

It has an internal clock that shows you the time in the status bar but
unfortunately it doesn't come with the fantastic clock the iPhone has

The iPad does not vibrate; the iPhone does.

The iPhone uses vibration to announce phone calls and the vibration
option is available for developers as well (we use it, for instance,
to indicate when a code is scanned).

If you have a hearing issue, you might want to consider this when
selecting which product you want.

you don't see it. IPad doesn't have its own clock, I don't think.

I've decided not to bother for the moment anyway as my phone and pod
do me just fine.

Hope this is helpful.

Subject: iPhone versus iPad?

 Hi all,

what can you do with an iPad that you can't with an
iPhone? I know the screen is bigger, etcetc, but why
would you get one if you already had an iPhone?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to start a war, lol. I
really want to know. I'm wondering whether to get an
iPad, or save up for a mac. I already have a 4S, and
whatever I get, I want it to be because it can do more,
or different things, or ttthere's no point.

for example, I have heard that you can do more with pages
on a mac as it's more accessible than it is on the
iPhone, but is the iPad the same as the iPhone? I would
assume the answer is yes, because it uses the same app
store, but I'd love to hear from people if they can share
 experiences and/or opinions and comparisons.

 Thanks in advance.

 best wishes,

 Danielle
