Sorry, Anna, your messages were hitting the spam folder and, along with others, they've only just been discovered!:) Thanks for your good explanation below. I can fully understand this aspect now and feel much more confident to change some items to get them just where I want/need them! Hi Carol and all, When you have a CD with songs by multiple artists, you can handle it in a couple of different ways. One is to designate it a compilation. Then it is listed with compilations. If there is one main artist, the other option is to say that it's not a compilation, but to set the album artist field to the main artist on the album. Then it is listed with that artist, but you can still have different artists for individual tracks. To make any changes of this sort, select all the tracks and either press Control-I on a PC, Command-I on a Mac to open the Get Info box, or open the context menu (context key or Shift-F10 on a PC, VO-M on a Mac), arrow down to Get Info, and press Enter. I hope that helps. As long as we are talking about managing play lists and libraries in iTunes, allow me to ask a related question. I have well over 4,000 songs on my main play list. There are a couple of albums that though they show up in the play list, my Windows screen reader (JAWS 16), always reads, Invalid location. How might I fix this and have the correct location for each of the songs so that they will actually play in the play list? Hi, I would like to ask the same question. The message I sometimes get when I try to delete a file is often confusing. It's rather like this. You can either delete a file and send it to the recycle bin, or you can delete it all together. If you delete is all together, this is the only way it will stay in the recycle bin. I know this is not the correct wording, but it is the strangest message I have ever seen. I know people have explained this on this list, but I also know that if I do the incorrect deletion according to the message, I am then told that it is still there but cannot be located. Now, these facts are pulled from memory and may not be actually what happens, but my problem is that it is a very confusing situation that often leads to songs not being located. So, if anyone can nail this one down, I would appreciate it. RE: ITUNES 12, STILL NOT SUCCEEDING - MORE HELP, PLEASE!
Hi Neal, Here is the exact wording of the messages you get when you delete a song from your iTunes music library in iTunes 12: iTunes Are you sure you want to delete the selected song from your iTunes library? This song will also be deleted from any iPod, iPhone, or iPad that synchronizes with your iTunes library. Do not ask me again Delete Song Cancel OK, so this is pretty straight forward, you are asked if you want to delete the song and you are told that if you delete it and you previously synced it with your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad that next time you sync that song will also be removed from your iOS device. The Do not ask again is a checkbox and if you check it then the next time you delete a song the above message asking you if you want to delete it won't be displayed, you only get the second message which is as follows and which is the one you and some others find confusing: iTunes Do you want to move the selected song to the Recycle Bin, or keep it in the iTunes Media folder? Only files in the iTunes Media folder will be moved to the Recycle Bin. Cancel Move to Recycle Bin Keep File This is really a straight forward question. You already indicated you want to delete the song from iTunes. Now iTunes wants to know if you want to move it to the recycle bin or if you want to keep it in your iTunes Media folder. Your options are to cancel the operation, to go ahead with deleting the song and to move the actual song to the recycle bin or to go ahead and delte the song from iTunes but keep the song in your music folder so you could later on add it again if you wish. The second line Only files in the iTunes Media folder will be moved to the Recycle Bin. Is just an explanation that if your song is located elsewhere like in a different folder or on an external hard drive, iTunes cannot move it to the recycle bin, only if the song is in the iTunes Media folder (that includes subfolders inside the iTunes Media folder) can it be moved to the recycle bin. Hope I explained this in a way that makes sense. It is showing invalid location because the file was moved from the location iTunes was pointed to. If you know where the track is, you can hit enter on the invalid link, then point to the correct location. This will fix the issue. Also, you can see if it is duplicated on your library by going to view and show duplicated fsongs. Sometimes you can delete the invalid one and keep the good one. Well, unfortunately I can't answer that. All I can say is that it is better to manage your music through iTunes and not to go and delete, move oor rename stuff in the iTunes Media folder. If you want to delete a song and also remove it completely from your computer, then just select the Move to Recycle bin option when you delete it from iTunes. If you have a shortcut to a folder in Windows and you rename, move or delete said folder Windows also does not know this hence any shortcut you made also will not work any more. Hi! Sorry I’m not very good at writing stuff up! But I’ll try better this time *smile* Ok When I mentioned about the tracks in a invalid location I did not make it clear that you should get that in iTunes if the tracks had already been in iTunes and then deleted only from iTunes but still exist somewhere else! And of course that meant the ones never added to iTunes as you said do not show up! Also if I make this come across right when you’ve deleted from the media folder iTunes does not know so still lists it! I hope that’s better. Seems to me that when I had this problem, I got a dialog that asked me if I wanted iTunes to look for the file for me. I was able to get it to find that file plus all of the files in my library that had invalid paths. Somehow in copying my library from one machine to another, I'd messed up a bunch of the paths to the actual files. Unfortunately, since this is all resolved for me, I'm not sure how I got this dialog up anymore. I've now heard the podcast and got it into my mind how useful those keystrokes can be. I hadn't realised though that, now I've made a playlist then added it to my phone as a playlist, I now have an album which (because it's in the Complilations (the Best of) in Itunes it doesn't show up under the artist's name. The rest in that playlist do show up correctly. Must I live with this or can I do anything to show that this album is by a certain artist? In addition, if I choose to delete the playlist from my phone or computer, do I keep the tracks and artists intact on the phone and computer? Re: ITUNES 12, STILL NOT SUCCEEDING - MORE HELP, PLEASE!
Carol, I've got iTunes set to sync all songs in my library, but I've also created a playlist like you did. Anyway, I have a good number of compolation albums in my collection where the artist doesn't always show up in the list of artists. I find these particular songs by tabbing or using F6 to get to the search box and entering part or all of the artist's name or the song title. Then I can use tab or F6 to get back to the list of possible matches. This usually works for me. I've worked a lot with iTunes, but i know about enough to be dangerous and no more. In other words, I'm right there with you, grin. Wayne On 11/14/14, Russ Kiehne russ94...@gmail.com wrote: In my openion I find it easier. RE: ITUNES 12, STILL NOT SUCCEEDING - MORE HELP, PLEASE!
Hey Carol This explaination might help. Your songs are on your computer. iTunes just points to the song. If you delete a song from your playlist, it stays in your main music library, and on your computer. But, it will come off of your phone when you sync it the next time. Even if you delete a song from the main music library, it’s still on your computer. You can even go to your music through windows explorer and control c to copy, then go to iTunes and when you are looking at your playlist, hit control v and it will add it to your playlist and to the mail music library. In fact, my wife has a folder on her computer that contains all of the songs she wants on her phone, and I can select them all ( control A), copy them (control c), then paste them (control v) to her playlist in iTunes. It will not duplicate the songs she already has in there, since the path is the same. As to your question about the album, If you are focused on it, you should be able to hit F2 and it will ask you to rename the item. Just like in Windows explorer. Since it was a CD that I had to rip, it's possible it was/is incorrectly tagged. I accept though that it is a compilation and it just appears that ITunes elected to put it in that place, alongside a few other compilations. At least we have the copy of the ripped CD safely in ITunes and another totally separate from the PC, just in case! Re: ITUNES 12, STILL NOT SUCCEEDING - MORE HELP, PLEASE!
I accept though that it is a compilation and it just appears that ITunes elected to put it in that place, alongside a few other compilations. At least we have the copy of the ripped CD safely in ITunes and another totally separate from the PC, just in case! The rest in that playlist do show up correctly. Must I live with this or can I do anything to show that this album is by a certain artist? In addition, if I choose to delete the playlist from my phone or computer, do I keep the tracks and artists intact on the phone and computer? I just want to let everyone know I've been able to follow Tom's explanations and thank everyone for your patience as I've struggled with ITunes. I now have everything to date safely on my various devices, including the IPod. I discovered it was a bit of a mystery, but it turns out that the IPod was not recognised if it was plugged in before the laptop was turned on. The phone doesn't seem to care which way I do things! OK, thanks so much. I got there, but it wasn't quite so straightforward, for some reason, as your instructions ... However, although I do have everything in the list, one section keeps saying Unticked. What do I do now, please! (I hope these aren't too many questions, but what else can I do but ask them! I sure do appreciate any and all help!) Start by pressing control 1 to make sure that you are in the music library. Next, press control F to go to the search box. Hit F6 and this will bring you to a tree view. Arrow down until you get to your playlist. F6 until you get to the list of songs in the playlist. Hi Tom, OK. I've made my playlist (which I hadn't done on the computer before), but now I want to check what's in that playlist and don't seem able to do it. Presumably I check Music then Playlists, but if you can help me from that point, I'd be grateful! Thanks! I just select the playlist I want. You can add songs to your playlist with the application key and go to add to playlist and direct it to your playlist. If you want to delete a song from your playlist, just hit delete when you are focused on the playlist song list. Hi all, Apologies for yet another ITunes question, but I admit I'm hopeless with this app , but I must use it and am trying really hard to like it, just a little. However, I'm not succeeding in carrying out the task of putting further music onto my IPhone. I haven't done it for some months but now am ripping more of our music selection ... and doing OK there. However, I can't remember how to select some items of music and not others and, whilst my PC (with Jaws) will say Selected if I shift+down arrow, I don't recall this was the way to do it in ITunes and when I go back to check what I've selected, it seems I have nothing selected. Ah! I've managed to tick those items successfully now and learned a little in the process! Now all I have to do is to get that playlist onto my phone! (Probably have to be tomorrow!) I'll write up your instructions, with any amendments I have had to make for further reference. RE: ITUNES 12, STILL NOT SUCCEEDING - MORE HELP, PLEASE!
Here are some instructions for adding the playlist to your phone. First, connect your phone. Next control F to go to the search box. Tab until it says iPhone button and press space. Control F again to the search box. F6 twice until it comes to the phone tree view. It should say summary. Down arrow twice to music. Tab until it says Sync Music, and make sure it is checked. Tab until it asks to sync entire library and make sure it is not checked. Make sure sync selected playlist artists, and genres is checked. About 3 or 4 more tabs will bring up the playlists to check which ones you want. Then alt F to the file menu. Arrow down to device and hit enter or right arrow. Hit enter on sync iPhone. Done.
