Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
Agreed; sounds like a non-issue to me. This is all very subjective and I think we have to rely on our instinct to a certain extent to decide whether to request service. I believe I have heard that there may have been certain issues with a couple initial batches of iPhone 5s, but am not totally sure. Best thing to do as always if anyone is concerned is head to an Apple store or contact your carrier. No, it is very faint, and only happens when the phone is shaken vigorously at a certain angle. When I rest my finger on the volume buttons, the rattle is not present at all. True, in the case that you describe, I very likely would not pay attention to it if it were not causing and I did not think it would cause any future issue. I do agree that I absolutely appreciate Apple accessibility and the extra mile they go in a lot of cases. It makes all the difference and does not go unappreciated. Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
Hi David, if you depress the volume button while you are shaking the phone, do you hear a rattle? In my case it was a clear rattling sound that was not dependent on any one button or switch, at least as far as I could determine. Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
Hi David and all, I agree with most of your comments and have found Apple to be absolutely outstanding in terms of customer support and level of service; as you rightly point out, they go far above and beyond what many other mainstream companies provide, and in terms of accessibility--well, they're lightyears ahead of anyone else. In terms of the rattle, I do think it's fair that if a customer is experiencing something on their phone which is not present on others (i.e. the display models in the Apple store) then it's only natural to want a replacement. Yes there isn't anything wrong with the phone's functionality at present, but, it could be a symptom of something to come. When you buy a new handset you do expect it to be, well, perfect, in comparison to other handsets of the same model. However, when I called Apple they were very very helpful and didn't indicate that I would have any trouble getting my phone replaced. I went with my carrier's replacement program only because I wanted to have a new handset, not a refurbished one. I am fairly certain that in Canada Apple can charge you for another handset, ship it out, then credit the charge when your original is mailed back; but I am not certain of this. Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
It depends on the rattle. On my iPhone, if I hold it just right and shake it just so, I can barely hear a very slight rattle. In my case, it is one of the volume buttons which I can very slightly wiggle. The movement is less than a millimetre. As a company, I would not replace such an issue unless my policy stated that nothing in the product has any movement except in directions that are specified. Yes, you can acquire products built to that intense of specifications. And yes, those products are considerably more expensive than the consumer analog of such products. For example, look at the specs, and related prices, of the Panasonic ToughBook laptops. They are a couple thousand more than standard laptops of the same specs. Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
The wonderful thing about he said / she said is it can't be proven either way, but can be used to justify one's assertions. I do not know if Apple has such a policy, but I do know that they will repair or replace any product under warranty, and provide way above industry standard customer service for anyone under warranty or service plan. The majority of computer company service plans only cover a set number of customer service/tech support calls. When you exceed that number, you are charged significant amounts of money for each tech support question. In my experience, the majority of tech companies will not send out a replacement product until after they receive the original product. In my experience, the majority of tech companies only pay freight to send product back to me. In my experience, aside from Assistive Technology specific companies, the vast majority of tech companies do NOT set up dedicated support toll-free numbers for disabled customers. In my experience with mobile phones, if the phone has a slight rattle in it, but the phone works properly, no company will replace the phone after the initial replacement period. I've worked for a couple different AT companies in the past. One of the companies was very focused on customer service. Because this was our focus, many people complained about our product. We released patches and upgrades monthly. The more responsive we were, the more people complained. Another AT company I worked for only paid a little more than lip-service to customer service. We released patches every few months or longer. This company was larger, and we received less complaints. And, more people purchased this company's products. Therefore, the lesson companies should learn is to just ignore the complaints if you want to grow from a smaller to a larger company? My 4S is dead quiet and I never noticed a rattle with my 4 either and I had an iPhone that made a significant noise when I shook it I'd probably take it back to Apple and argue that this should not be which seems to be what quite a few of the callers seemed to agree with. Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
Ok, I know someone is going to say the tone at the end of my message and the wording was not appropriate and maybe it wasn't quite the way I should have expressed how I feel. I'm sorry if it was incorrect. I do very strongly feel concerned if they take the direction of just pushing the issue under the rug or denying it to be an issue or however is best to describe it. That idea is really upsetting to me. The only way I can really think of around it when it is an issue and if they will not respond in an acceptable way is to take it to squaretrade (square trade) and hope they would consider it a real issue. I would think they would, but who knows for sure. Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
I also heard that episode, but the really disturbing thing is in the latest one after that, someone from Apple had commented that they have a policy that they will not replace an IPhone for the rattle problem and they stated tey have official Apple documents that state they will not do it. That is really disturbing when some are clearly having issues with a rattle that is not there in others and it sounds like Apple is taking the direction of a cover up. If some do not rattle, none of them should. Apple needs to own up to their crap for quality control and make things right for everyone. Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
Hi all, Just wanted to give an update on the "rattle" sound I heard when shaking my iPhone 5. My phone company offers a 14-day window where you can get your unit exchanged with a brand-new, sealed unit. I opted for this just in case. The new unit has no rattle at all. I'm very happy. I'm convinced there was something moving around in the older unit that shouldn't be. For sure, the thing is though that the subtle clicking sound on my phone isn't at all significant. Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
I heard some callers siting the issue and their resolution on TodayInIos podcast 245, right now the most recent version, and some people have taken theirs back to the store and it was a loose battery. If you hear a heavy sounding flopping around, which they did, it was a loose battery in their case. Tere is apparently a separate issue with some camera parts rattling around as well and they sited that the store tech told them that should not happen either. These people were able to get them with no rattles at all. It sounds like it depends on who you talk to and at least some within Apple are trying to blow off the issue by just calling it normal with some excuse and others are able to get proper units with no rattle. This is a little disturbing. Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
It's a tricky one. I was watching a Youtube video where someone had an iPhone 5 that *was* actually defective. The rattle was very severe and definitely wasn't even close to my iPhone's "clicking" sound. He compared it to his iPhone 4 and said "see? When I shake this iPhone 4 you can't hear anything." But in fact, I did hear a noise when he shook that 4. It was just very subtle, so it'd be easy for people to miss. I think probably a slight clicking noise is actually mormal, but I have no idea. Grant, I have had this in the past three iPhones starting with the 4, 4S and I notice it on my wife's five. I don't know if it is something like an accelerometer in there or what. This is completely normal. It is some part of the camera. I think the camera has something like five lenses and I have heard that the noise is due to a floating lens. Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
Grant and all, This is going to b another one of those, well Apple told me, but, well, they did, and here goes. I can remember hearing this faint noise when shaking all of my iPhones, 3GS, 4, 4S and now the 5. I've had two or even three of mos of these as well over the years. I took the first 3GS to the Apple retail store and demonstrated. They explained to me that it was, and they were absolutely sure of this, the camera lens, they explained that it has a little play in its housing. I honestly cannot remember why they said it did, but, they said that it had this play, perhaps to do with focus etc. Anyway, they said that it 100% was the camera and this was from one of their repair iPhone people. It's not the area around the home button, it's a combination of the sleep/wake button being loose in the assembly, which isn't a defect, and the volume buttons also being that way. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Alex Stone Sent: Saturday, October 20, 2012 10:34 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5? Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
Sieghard, Lucky you! I remember the slight rattle with my 4 and both my wife and I have a 4S with the slight rattle. I wonder if something like this could be related to specific batches of devices produced? Of course if the phone is in a case or if you have a screen protector could mask the rattle. Now I did try shaking my iPad and did not hear any rattle, but I am sure that is not a reasonable test since the manufacturing processes will be different. Raul, I would have to agree because I held my finger on the home button and shook my 4S. I could still hear a very slight rattle, but it was dampened. On Oct 19, 2012, at 10:51 PM, Raul A.
