Re: Great Safari idea

2003-01-13 Thread David Chandler
It is a nice idea particularly if the draw is scaleable to allow you to
choose to view last ten or last twenty etc pages that would then
combine tabs and thumbnails depending upon your personal preference. I
would not mind having some kind of tree structure in the side draw to
help navigate back through complex surfs. Too many times have I got
lost in my IE history list :-)

*sigh* Stolen desktop G4/800

2003-01-13 Thread Phillip McGree
Just a quickie, I'll expand on it further later on when I've got time.

Just got a call from someone who got a brand new G4/800 (single process
QuickSilver) from me in late June last year. The Mac was stolen in a burglary
last night. The thief took the Mac, scanner, Zip drive, keyboard and mouse, but
left the 17" monitor and printer. Gee, sounds suspiciously like a "stolen to
order". So it probably won't turn up on the market, but you never know.

If anyone suddenly acquires QuickSilver G4 in the near future, start asking
questions. Keep in mind that the new G4s are the mirrored doors models, and
anyone who has bought a QuickSilver G4 sure won't be selling it just yet.

I'll email full details later on, and naturally, Apple will be notified.

Oh yeah... the bloke that brought me the stolen iMac before Xmas finally got
busted by the police, but claimed that he bought it from the Canning Vale
markets, thus avoiding prosecution for receiving stolen goods. Bugger. Anyone
with psychotic violent tendencies is welcome to contact me for his personal
name and address. (joking!!!)

First, read (and understand :) the Tao of Backup

If you must do partial backups, I'd backup /Users, /Library and
/Applications. But be warned you'll have to spend time reinstalling
lots of things (like Mac OS X, any updates, the iApps (and their
updates), and drivers, etc. etc.) if your system falls over and you
only have the partial backups.

In my opinion, it is far more effective to backup your *whole* system.
While this may mean more in the way of backup resources, it also means
that all your preferences, bookmarks, installed applications, window
locations and other settings you just take for granted are restored to
their personalised condition in the event of a system failure.

It is my experience that the average user largely under-estimates the
time/energy/effort/frustration it takes to recover a system where only
the data files have been backed up.

Finally, your backup application can likely do incremental backups, only
backing up those files that have changed since the last backup.

It is good practice to complete a full backup each week and an
incremental one each day. This does depend on the value of your data and
the loss you incur in the time it takes to recover/restore/reconstruct
after any system failure.

While this is by no means a complete run-down on your considerations, I
think it's enough to wet your appetite...

I have seen these little plugin storage devices that go into a usb port
in computer mags. Called flash drives or something like that.

Would these work to transfer files from a windows to a mac machine?
Where can you buy them?

You can burn cds but that time consuming and wasteful if you need to
move files often.

My daughter has her book on the pc in her room, but can only access the
internet [one user adsl] on the mac. Yes, I guess you could network
...but ten miles of blue cable from one room to another ...and I HAVE

Rosemary,
These "thumb drives" work well on PC with Windows 2000 and XP. Windows
9x needs to have drivers installed first (of course!). You can format
them as well. So if you did that (format) first on your PC and plugged
it into the mac, the mac should "see it" as a PC disk. Drag and drop.
I think I have seen Keith Palmer advertise these - but the going price
is about $1/megabyte from most PC shops.

Ken Chan asked this question on 2 Jan, but no answers forthcame. This
is my question also, on behalf of a scientist with a PC chock full of
data. Would take 30 or 40 CDs to do the job, so he wants to do it on
DVD. He has a DVD reader, but not a burner. Someone else with a Mac
made a DVD for him, but he can't read it, so mutterings of 'Macs can't
interact with PCs arose (yet again). Also, I read somewhere that iDVD
can not do data: is this part of the issue? Any enlightenment would be
much appreciated.

What format did the person with the DVD burner use to burn the disc?
If it's HFS+ format the disc won't be readable on a PC unless it's
got Mac disk reading software installed.

From my knowledge, isn't there two competing DVD formats (DVD-R and
DVD+R)? This may be the problem, where the Mac is a DVD-R drive for
burning, where the PC has a DVD-ROM drive that can only read DVD+R
discs. I may be wrong, but it may be one possible reason.

Sorry, I must be becoming Americanised, writing 'checked' instead
of 'ticked' or 'turned on' in my original post.
Yes, AppleTalk is turned on in the Built-in Ethernet pane.
There doesn't seem to be any options with respect to AppleTalk
within the Internal Modem pane that I can tell.

> It needs to be turned on on the ethernet interface,
> so select that from the pop-up menu in the

It is

> (or if it's not there, enable your ethernet interface

My 'Network Port Configurations' are set in this order:
'Built-in Ethernet' ticked
'Internal Modem' ticked
'IrDA Modem Port' unticked
'AirPort' unticked

Part of my problem is that I continue to have no printer available in the
'Print Center' 'Printer List'.

This morning, I tested my problem again, attempting to print a Word
document, which required selecting a printer as 'No printer selected' ==>
'edit print list' ==> 'add' ==> 'Unable to turn AppleTalk on' ==> Network
pane ==> Built-in Ethernet ==> AppleTalk tab ==> un-tick then re-tick ==>
drop down message within Network pane "AppleTalk can only be active on one
network port at a time. If you continue AppleTalk will be deactivated on
Internal Modem."

So I clicked OK and Apply Now, but alas to no avail. I'm wondering if
AppleTalk is automatically switching back to Internal Modem.

Also, on my 'Print Center' 'Printer List' pane, I have AppleTalk selected in
the first option bar, but the second option bar shows:
AppleTalk Network [selectable]
Default Zone [greyed out]
[but, this is selectable, suggesting existence of a zone]
Recent Zones [greyed out]
However, selecting either of these produces no result, with 'Printer Model:
Auto Select' remaining greyed out.

So, back it is I must to the WAMUG collective for more suggestions...

Jack
