Hi Philip

If I remember correctly for this. (And it¹s been a while since I installed
ViaVoice) but it actually has to do with the way the languages are set up.
(Or maybe I¹m thinking of a different problem.)
But give this a try anyway:

1. Go to System Preferences
2. Go to International. Under the language tab click the Edit button. Turn
off everything except English, Australian English and British English.
3. Drag the one you want to use to the top. (I¹ll assume you want Australian
English.) Close the Window.
4. You then need to log out and log back in.
5. See if it works from there.

There might be a step I missed at the start which is removing ViaVoice first
then do these steps then re-install ViaVoice.

Give it a go. If it doesn¹t work drop me an email or give me a call, as I
know I got it working when I was trialing it originally to see what it was
like. (I can actually type faster I found out.)

I just remember that there were some steps you had to do to change the
language over so it knew it was the UK/Australian version and not the US
version, which seemed to cause a problem.

I hope I¹m remembering the correct t

Telstra Cable Users

Hi All,

It seems that gradually more Mac users are connecting to cable. I
have been connected for almost 2 years and have found the Whirlpool
site to be an invaluable source
of facts and information. The site also has various forums where you
can discuss with and receive assistance from other cable users.

There are several routers which support the
heartbeatrefer.

I have used Netgear for a number of years and am currently using

Configuring the routers is easy provided that you ensure the latest

Mark

I go along with everything you say about iiNet and overall have not
missed a beat with them. I was one of their first customers they
ever had, joining them in 1994. Gone through all the changes of Mac
OS systems, started with them using would you believe syestem 6 and
a 14400 modem. (Wowwhat a difference using OS X and Broadband)

Back to iiNet, well they are not perfect like the rest of us but I
do honestly believe they do a good overall job and with them being
one of the bigger ISP's you are going to hear more complaints about
them than any one else.

There are hundreds of different reasons why one can have a bad
connection to an ISP and of course the easy way out is to say it is
their fault.

I find if I have a problem with anything to do with a Mac be it
regarding the internet or using software, you will generally find
that some one has had the same problem before you and by doing a
search through google their is a good chance you find an answer.

that after 7-8 years with them (on both Mac and PC) I can not say I have
ever encountered more than a reasonable period of down time due to some
specific reason. In the past 4 years I have had only a handful of engaged

I have an old dinosaur Mac 8100/110 , which I occassionally fire up to do
some things, and the connection still works on a Motorola 28K modem using
 the old (original) PPP scripts.

I have friends with iMac's and a Mac laptop (ibook?), and I have helped
them connect to iiNet, with no problems of what I read on this list ?

I understand that the Support call centre may not always appreciate the Mac

Surely, there must be a simple reason for the connection issues ?... well,
certainly not ones that result in you having to purchase a Net Friendly
Fridge to get on line ?

But NOT with an Earth leakage Residual current device in your house.
All new houses are supposed to have them and smart people in older houses
Get them installed.

You get Earth Leakage you have NO power, the protector disconnects it until
you fix it.

I know Xmas eve with full fridge and wire contacts earth in the fridge
cabinet.. All power points off !

That's quite a possibility for any fridge because they have heater wires
( Yes ! I did say heater wires ) to defrost various parts of the cabinet.
These wires occasionally get a git of moisture through the insulation and
corrode away. If you have a big block of ice that develops regularly in a
corner of your fridge the chances are that your fridge's heater wire is open
circuit.

Have fun

Far be it from me to rush to the aid of IInet in any way but the fridge
analogy could be closer to the mark than at first suspected :-)

The helpdesk guy could have been referring to Earth Leakage which can do
strange things to your phone line and your power supply. We recently had
a client that had very similar problems, we went through with her to
make sure all of our ports & systems were working fine and went through
her system with a fine tooth comb to no avail. The problem now seems to
be fixed!!!

Solution: Fixing the water pump that was shorting out to earth :-)

Since then she has been fine with our service. The reference to the
Fridge could be closer to the mark if the fridge is of an older model
where earth leakage can occur :-) Not to say of course we should all
check our fridges before calling IInets helpline :-)

Certainly worth considering at least as a possible cause of your
problems.
Western Power & Telstra can check the services they provide for Earth
Leakage (normally free) and I have found the problems usually occur at
this time of year due to extra lightning strikes in winter degrading
lines and power cables.

Hope that clarifies things a little for you.

Sadly the person who was told to try turning his
fridge off while he used the net was a PC user. I've
had a few PC using friends complain about them
recently after not having problems for years before.
But a net friendly fridge, maybe one of those LG ones,
the stainless steel ones with built in internet access
and TV, now that would always be nice. :-D

Just a pity they are a little above my budget... Along

Re: Password problem

2003-09-11 Thread Shay Telfer

Some days are ok, on others I can get the home page but no email, yet again
on others I can receive email but cannot send it (or vice versa).

Numerous calls have been made to their tech support line, and everything on
the face of the earth has been blamed except iinet. Cable is to long or
wrong brand? Telstra is at fault, or it is the lightning, it is a systemic
problem with OS9/X or what ever system I happen to be running.

They regularly seem to have authentication problems with their POP
servers. And I know it's iinet's fault because I can POP mail off
other servers over the same connection without any problems. It
usually goes away after a couple of hours.

FYI, to quote iinet's newsletter:
The Managing Director said:

August was another unbelievably busy month at iiNet, as you will
see from the lead article in our newsletter. We're starting to
get on top of the backlog of calls and emails, and I hope you'll
find it much easier to get through and talk to us if you need any
assistance in the future.

Elsewhere in the newsletter:

Contact Centre Inundated by Requests for Virus Support Information
===

August saw our Contact Centre inundated with support enquiries
and requests for information, after the latest virus threat from
Blaster Worm and SoBig was unleashed on unsuspecting Internet
users.

These viruses and countless others like them are often spread via
email or a security hole in your Windows operating system. The
best way to ensure your hardware and data are protected, is by
regularly updating the operating system of your computer. The
Contact Centre reported a significant increase in the number of
calls received during August. Current figures indicate that an
additional 30,000 enquiries were answered by our customer service
consultants last month. Check out our Contact Centre statistics

below.

Here are some interesting stats from our Contact Centre Team:

. Number of calls per month: Approx 80,000
. Average length of each call: 10 mins
. Total number of operators: 140
. Calls answered by operator per day: Between 40 and 50
. Average emails answered by Contact Centre: Approx 1000 daily

Obviously all those pesky Mac users asking questions about the
viruses affecting their machines :)

Have fun,
Shay

2003-09-11 Thread Kelly Duffy
I recently changed from iiNet due to their customer
service. I would be more willing to accept that the
fault was at my end sometimes if they actually took
into account that they could also be at fault at
times.I got my phone line tested, changed all my
settings numerous times, turned my modem speed down,
spent months trying to fix my problems with them and
gave up.

The best excuse I heard was from a friend who was told
by iiNet that his fridge could be the problem. Of
course everyone needs to go and buy a new fridge when
you get disconnected from the internet...

I'm still hnting a decent ISP, it looks like Westnet
is the next one on my list for trialing.

Good luck,
Kelly

There are plenty of providers that don't have those problems.

DVD software decoder for Mac OS 9?

2003-09-11 Thread Mark Secker
I have a user who has an original model B&W G3 . Without
consultation they have purchased a DVD drive for it so she can
perform part of her research which involves viewing DVDs of
course this computer doesn't come with a DVD decoder daughter board
on its ATA rage 128 video card so the computer mounts the disk in
the drive (recognises udf disks) but the DVD viewer program give the
old "missing hardware" error.

Acourding to some sites found in a Google search OS 9.2 includes a
software DVD decoder (though haven't as yet found a link to it on an
official apple site.

Is this true? they are as it is probably not going to be happy about
paying for an OS upgrade let alone

Conversely does anyone have a spare DVD decoder daughter board for a
ATA Rage 128 card that they are willing to part with for an agreeable
price?

IBM VIa Voice

2003-09-11 Thread Philip Woolford
Last week I purchased Via Voice for Mac OS X and have been having no
end of trouble installing it. Checked archives but could not find
past postings on this one! By the way this is my first posting!

I have a imac 400 Mhz - running OS X.2.6

By and large I have no major problems with the imac or updating from
OS 9 to OS X. In fact since installing OS 10.2 the whole system has
been quite stable and less problematic.

The problem

The physical installation of Via Voice program was OK. - Had a
problem of submitting registration to IBM {While connected to
Internet no connection was found at IBM end}

This was when the problems began. Before I can use the application I
need to go through the Via Voice Set Up Assistant to start up the
program

Everything was going ahead fine - following the visual
instructions/prompts {Via Voice Set Up Assistant} on screen until I
came to the microphone test.

The following message appeared and continues to appear.

"It appears that your microphone may not be connected. Check your
connections, close set up assistant, and repeat this set up again.
You may need to restart your computer after plugging in the mic."

The steps I have taken to solve this problem:

1. Initially, I followed the instructions of this prompt - 4/5 times
without any success, paying particular attention to putting in the
right cables into the right slots etc. Also making sure that the
microphone was correctly put together!

2. I deleted the files on the HD and reinstalled and followed the Via
Voice Set assistant a second time - no success

3. Checked out Scan Soft - IBM support on Web

http://knowledgebase.scansoft.com/view.asp?tnID=5360

Found that there was a problem with OS X recognizing the microphone
"Error message does not appear to be connected when using OS 10.2

3. Followed Step 1 and found that 'Apple System Profiler' was not
recognizing Via Voice.

4. Then followed Steps 1 - 10 {additional} by the letter including
installing IBM Via Voice update for Mac OS X 10.2.2

Made some progress as 'Apple Profiler' recognized Via Voice - USB
Information - USB Bus 0 - AK 5370

Then I followed Via Voice Set up Assistant and got the same message.

5. Went and followed steps 2 - 7 {Apple Menu - Systems Preferences}

Made more progress - the following settings are current {even if they
are not working}

Speech -

Listening panel Listening Method/ Listen Only while key is pressed;
Microphone AK5370

On/Off - Apple Speakable Items are turned off

Sound -

Input

Choice of Sound Imput: AK 5370

The imput level is moving responding to my voice through the microphone

Output

Built In Audio Controller {no other choices available}

Thought that I was cooking with gas!

Relaunched the Via Voice Set Up Assistant - but when it came to
testing the microphone GUESS WHAT -

"It appears that your microphone may not be connected. Check your
connections, close set up assistant, and repeat this set up again.
You may need to restart your computer after plugging in the mic."

Deleted the HD applications and HD Users log - Via Voice several
times and reinstalled according to instructions 1 - 10 without
success.

So I am none the wiser! And frustrated in what was intended as save
me time {do a lot of transposing and summary work from books and
notes to computer documents} is no lying dormant! Have done all the
things like delete files/ empty trash/ reinstall/ reboot computer in
sequence.

Can some one help me! I am sure that it must be something that I am
overlooking or it could be more technical and co0mplex than my
capabilities!

Sorry, but unlike MacOS 9, where you could literally start from a
System Install CD and use your computer, the MacOS CD supplied by Apple
contains only an installer. You must install MacOS X in order to be
able to use it. The only alternative is to use a custom-built startup
CD created by one of a few third party tools available, but even these
CDs can only be created from an existing working MacOS X installation.
