Dear BigPond Member

BigPond Broadband is happy to announce that new connection software
for BigPond Broadband Cable is available now.

The new software is called BigPond Broadband Cable Login and has been
developed by Telstra Research Laboratories Broadband E-Lab. It has

Please note: Downloading the new Cable Login from the BigPond
Broadband website is unmetered and will not count against your monthly
usage allowance.

BigPond Broadband Cable Login has new features including:

- Auto-reconnection if the connection to BigPond Broadband is lost
- Optional integration with the BigPond Toolbar (for more information
on the BigPond Toolbar please visit
http://www.bigpond.com/helpcentre/toolbar/)
- A connection log-file and improved error messages to make it easier
to solve connection problems
- Improved useability and integration with Windows and Macintosh
operating systems

- Advanced options to help customers that use firewalls.

We expect the transition to the new software to be quite
straightforward. If you need our assistance, technical support for
BigPond Broadband Cable Login will be available from BigPond Technical
Support from October 1.

BigPond Broadband will be withdrawing customer end-user licences for
Amicus Launchpad on November 9. We request that you delete or destroy
any copies of the Amicus Launchpad software after the 9th of November.

As a result of this change, Technical Support for Amicus Launchpad

This is only true for an active network port. If I connect the Ethernet port
to a hub, it works fine. It won't switch to AppleTalk within Classic if the
Ethernet port is not connected to anything. Even with AppleTalk active
selected within the Sys Prefs in X. Do I need an ethernet loopback cable of
some kind?

Hi Simon,

When running Classic within OSX, classic uses the preferences set in OS X
ie. Whatever you have set in System Preferences in X is set for Classic
Appletalk preferences. And it makes no difference if you are able to
re-boot into OS 9, as once you go back to X and Classic, it reverts to the
System Preferences of X.

AppleTalk in Classic problem

2003-10-15 Thread Simon Hancock
Hi all,
Is there a way of getting AppleTalk active within Classic on a non active
network port? IE, I have set AppleTalk active within the Network Preference
on the Built-in Ethernet port. (I an not using this port, no cable
connected) Then within the chooser in OS 9, AppleTalk is disabled. I can
only get it working with an active network port.

Any ideas?

Re Telstra email...

1. Somewhere a statement was made that they updated some software,
which was probably microsoft stuff seeing they are tied in there
and ... It had bugs. They were still sorting that out.. So the story
went.
2. Spam has created a 25 % increase in their mail traffic in just 2 weeks.
I don't know anybody who could justify having that amount of system
hardware just sitting around on a " MAYBE the spammers will generate
more mail and we might need this " basis.

Virtual PC - OS9/OSX

2003-10-15 Thread Neil Houghton
I've just bought virtual PC v6.1 with windows XPpro (as part of the Office X
pro package) & I have a couple of questions for any Virtual PC v6.1 users
out there:

1) Virtual PC comes on two CDs. I successfully installed on my 800MHz G4
15" iMac (running OSX 10.2.8). All this from the first disc - I was never
asked for the second disc. The second disc is labelled "Additional system
files" and by inspection contains 483.4MB of Windows files (5474 items).
There are no read me or text files.

Does anyone know what these files are, what they are used for, in what
circumstances I would need them??

2) When I'm on the road, I'll need to install on my 400MHz G4 Ti Powerbook
and I was thinking of installing OSX on the powerbook. The documentation say
that VPC 6.1 will run on OSX or OS9 but that it needs a 500 MHz or faster
processor in OSX - which rules out the powerbook.

Presumably I can run VPC if I boot up in OS9 - would that mean that I should
be booted in OS9 when I install it.

Does VPC install different versions of the software for OSX/OS9. If not and
I mistakenly try to start VPC when in OSX what might happen:
- it refuses to launch
- it tries & hangs
- it launches but is not usable
- it brings the mac to its knees

the first three would not be a problem but the last would be a worry - is
there any potential to crash/corrupt OSX.

The powerbook only has a 10GB drive so I don't want to partition -
presumably it would be OK to have OS9, OSX & VPC on the same partition
provided I restarted in OS9 before launching VPC.

TIA

Neil

Sometimes the local IMAP folder and the server get out of synch wrt unread
mail. The way I usually fix it to right click (or control click if you only
have one button) on the folder and select "Empty Cache". Once this has
completed I click off the folder and click on it again. The folder should
then re-synch with the server and get the unread messages count right again.

If you have a version of Toast try dropping it onto that as sometimes you
can also get them to mount from there. You also used to get a program called
ShrinkWrap (From Aladdin) that also could be used to mount images.
(OK there still is a link to it on VersionTracker)

If you have either of these it's worth a try.
(Also if you know some one with Mac OSX get them to mount it and make it
into a "normal" CD for you.

Hope some success comes it.
Email if I can help any further.

It started two weeks ago.

Check out detailed news on www.zdnet.com.au.

My mail has been severely affected.

Still coming in in dribs and drabs. Couldn't even log on to the mail server
this morning after repeated attempts (the old pasword not recognised problem
that has showed up during the last 2 weeks) ... then suddenly got in and
downloaded 98 messages that were 3 days old.

Check out the nightly saga at the bigpond.support newsgroup ... it makes one

Hi all,

Has anyone else been having problems with missing mail?

I'm assuming I'm missing mail because I'm getting a lot of WAMUG messages
that are obviously replies to messages that I haven't seen. (ie subject
re:xxx where I didn't receive subject xxx or messages with quoted passages
which I haven't seen).

I heard on the news that telstra were having email problems and I wondered
if this might be related (I'm a bigpond customer) but although I had a few
"failed to retrieve" messages I seem to be connecting & receiving mail -
just not all of it?.

The other thing I noticed was mail that seemed out of sequence, eg I
recieved lots of the replies & replies to the replies for Peter's recent
ical color problem long before I received the original message.

I tried checking the archive to ascertain how much I might have missed but
the Yahoo one stops where the list got migrated.

Anyone else having similar problems? if so are you telstra customers?

TIA

Neil

I don't know exactly what you mean but I believe the
only way to create rules is through the Tools menu
then under Rules or by right clicking on the message.
It then gives you the Criteria options and auto fills
things like subject and other headings (to match the
selected email) when you select them.

I personally think Microsoft Office is fantastic.
While I'm not a huge Windows fan I think the
applications Microsoft write for the Mac are great.
Entourage is my choice of email program, MS Word is
the best word processing application I've used, Excel
is good, PowerPoint is also good for what it is but
seeing as I use Macromedia Director I don't see the
need for it anymore. Its a pity they don't make Access
for the Mac. Actually, my only complaint about MS
Office for the Mac is the lack of help assistants we
get. I want the cute little dog or cat like the PC
users get! I don't have Apple Works or anything else
on my Mac.

Entourage

2003-10-15 Thread Adam Hewitt
Hi All,

Well after not receiving a single reply to my issues with Mail I decided to
give Entourage a go. So far it seems a bit weird but full featured none the
less. I have a couple of issues though.

1. I keep a spam directory to move emails to that have been marked as spam.
I just deleted all the emails in that directory and according to the IMAP
folder list I still have 263 emails in there? A similar thing is happening
with my INBOX, telling me that I have 8 new emails, but none in the folder
are listed as unread and I have even highlighted everything in the folder
and selected 'Mark as read' and it still says I have 8 new emails there?

2. Is there a shortcut sequence for applying rules? Also is there a way to
create a rule based on the currently selected email?

3. I kind of feel like I have sold out by using MS Office v.X, what is the
point of having iCal, Address Book, iMail, Appleworks, etc if I go and use
Office so I would really like to get my Mail working again, but until then I
am stuck. Have other people who do use and like using MS Office removed
Appleworks and the rest of the now redundant software on there Mac?

Cheers,

It's been pretty well advertised that Macs will only

that you can use. Some will only read DVD +R .

I've yet to come across a home DVD unit that couldn't play a DVD-R or
DVD-RW that I've created on my PowerBook. Pioneer, Philips, Sony,
Marantz, Luxxor(sp?) - they all played them .

Given my reading of the DVD standards (the 200'ish page abridged
version ) I'd be worried about a consumer unit that supported DVD + R
but not DVD - R as DVD-R disks are supposed to present to the units
media reader (laser unit) as identical to standard DVD disks (same
wavelength same reflection pattern etc) so not been able to read
DVD-R or DVD-RW a deleting established standard rather than a
missing extra option and that in my books is a BAD THING...

As the disks would be played in units specially purchased for the
task and not for distribution such an issue is somewhat moot anyway.

The most recent news is that Apple is moving towards DVD writers that will
record either format.

Have fun

looking for how to build content for the DVD's Audio_TS folder or
another way to be able to playback on a consumer DVD unit audio file
from a DVD disk. The goal is for quantity rather than quality so
rather than, say, an hour of HDCD quality looking at, for example, 20
 hours of 192bps MP3 playback.

So what types of MP audio files are compatible, what's the naming
convention, is an "Audio_TS.inf" required and if so how do I create
 one?

Creating audio DVD content?

2003-10-15 Thread Mark Secker
Is there anyone on the list who has knowledge of how to create a DVD
audio disk (Not MP3 CDs)for playback in consumer DVD units (rather
than PC/Mac DVD drives)?

looking for how to build content for the DVD's Audio_TS folder or
another way to be able to playback on a consumer DVD unit audio file
from a DVD disk. The goal is for quantity rather than quality so
rather than, say, an hour of HDCD quality looking at, for example, 20
hours of 192bps MP3 playback.

So what types of MP audio files are compatible, what's the naming
convention, is an "Audio_TS.inf" required and if so how do I create
one?

mail problems still

2003-10-15 Thread Adam Hewitt
Hi All,

Well I tried cranking up Outlook for OS9 this morning and filled in my
account details and it works perfectly, so it is definitely something
with iMail (mail.app or whatever).

Is there a way that I can reinstall Mail without reinstalling
everything?

Cheers,

Adam.

Mac Vs PC

2003-10-15 Thread logrythm

Hello all

Q: Which is best?
A: All of them at once!

To me they are still just tools/toys, I guess I'm a digital atheist.

I agree with this article's points on almost everything except of
course usability.

I wonder, did the testers instinctivly go to 'Help'' for help or maybe
their experience of 'Help' hasn't always been so positive.

A quick search in Help on 'The Dock' would tell the user:

'To add an icon to the Dock, just drag it from a Finder window to the
Dock. Put application icons to the left of the line in the Dock, all
other icons to the right.'

Also, if the user looks to the top of their Finder window they will see
'Applications'

So for my money, I would not have deducted as many points on that
category.

Cheers

Re: Motorola and processor/chips production

Many of the rumour sites (eg Think Secret, As The Apple Turns and
others) have carried this story recently as well

If this news is correct, that would explain why there has been
virtually no
progress with the G4 chips for quite some time. Also the move to IBM's
PPC

970 (G5) by Apple.

I think you'd need to be a Motorola insider to know the full reasons
why development of their PowerPC technology has all but stalled, but
it's no secret that one of the reasons Apple has stayed with Motorola
for so long has been the lack of a Velocity Engine (aka Altivec) in the
IBM product. The presence of this component is very important to Apple,
and it was their willingness to help IBM incorporate it into the G5
which has allowed the G5 to come to fruition now.

Don't expect the Motoroloa G4 to disappear from Apple products any time
soon, though. The G5 is still way too hot for use in laptops, and
there's still much work to be done before we see it in the smaller
desktops (ie iMacs and eMacs) as well, I believe.

Troubleshooting the PowerBook G4 15" (FireWire 800): White Spots on Screen

2003-10-15 Thread Kay, Richard
This post is currently up on MacFixIt: 'There have been a number of complaints
of white spots on the displays of the new PowerBook G4 15" (FireWire 800).
MacFixIt reader Alwi Yunus writes: "I've had the problem occur on my PowerBook
purchased the day after the release at the retail AppleStore in Newark NJ. I
had the screen replaced back home in Malaysia but five days after the screen
replacement, the spots are back in the exact same configuration and place. I'm
convinced that the problem does not arise from the screen itself but from the
bottom half of the clamshell - from heat generated by the bottom half of the
powerbook damaging the display when the powerbook is closed. That is the only
explanation I can think of for the problem recurring in the exact location of
the original spots. I've put up pictures of my PowerBook at
"'.

About a month or so ago a single white spot appeared on the screen of my now 16
month old iBook (roughly in the position of the one on the left of the screens
in Alwi's pictures). Anyone else seen this on either their existing iBook or
TiBook?

I'm covered by AppleCare but probably won't bother using it at this stage ...
I'll see if the problem gets worse. Alwi's heat explanation sounds plausible.
Until recently I lived in a caravan and in summer the iBook fan was always on
during the daytime when the external temperature was 38 degrees Celsius or
above (God knows what the temperature was in the van but it was HOT!). So my
screen was subjected to some high temperates upon closure during the course of
last summer.

Neil,
You started this thread with this statement.. :-

Have been having some trouble over the past few weeks with connection drop
outs and the occasional inability to connect to my ISP. Telstra assures me
there are no issues with the line, but the problem seems to have only
started after Telstra completed some line work near our place recently.

You were basically OK, but now it is in trouble ! ?

So what line speed were you getting before ?

Age has nothing to do with it !

Distance is the controlling factor !

> is 33 Kbps

Nonsense !

Your maximum speed is controlled by the line loss !

Chances are that if Telstra did do work on your line then they could have
Swapped your " OK line " cable pair for some new cable of a lighter gauge
and as a consequence a higher loss.
It was quite normal practice in the country to use higher gauge cable to
produce a lower overall loss on longer circuits. It was the only way they
could keep the lines within the design maximum loss parameters.

I don't recollect you saying what OS you are using ! ?

If it's up to OS9xxx then a Modem script adjustment may improve the drop
outs without losing any speed, and I may be able to help.

Bob Howells

(you might have guessed we are in the bush!). We'll see what happens!
