Truetype font

2004-01-14 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond
Opening a document that used New Century Schoolbook a message
appeared that it was not TrueType and so Helvetica would be
substituted.
I assumed all fonts that came with OSX10.2 were TrueType but looking
at the Font folder in Library on the HD I find this is not so.

Is there a site that offers free downloads for selected fonts?
Suggestions appreciated.

The autoresponders should not normally reply to the authors of messages
that were sent via mailing lists. Perhaps it would be best if we
forwarded every ill-generated out-of-office message to the programmers
who are guilty of writing the deficient autoresponders.

But, seriously...ideally, users would unsubscribe from lists when they
are on leave OR they would use a well-behaved mail system. Otherwise,
it's nearly impossible for a list admin to fix this problem unless the
autoresponses are sent to the list's bounce-handling or admin address.

Who wants to work for 8% margin, knowing full well that the store down the
road will do everything possible to undercut you? I guess it is a Catch 22
- Apple reduce the margins on the product to stop undercutting, but increase
the kickback for high volume, which leads to stores dumping product to make
the kickback target (or buying large volumes at the end of a quarter to
achieve this target). So the Apple rep in his/her area is laughing, because
no matter what he or she will have a better chance of achieving his/her
target for the quarter. Meanwhile, 'Joe AppleCentre' has to figure out how
they are going to make it through the next quarter.

Hats off to people such as Mike and Chris that have taken the gamble and
opened an AppleCentre. Having seen the inner workings of most of the
AppleCentres that have gone or are still going in Perth, These guys work
real hard to make sure there is product on the shelves, and do work a
million hours a week.

Indeed. Generally, all I need to know is "is there a fault at your end;
what is it, and when will it be fixed?". Being told "Click start, then
settings..." is REALLY INFURIATING when I've done a tcpdump of eth1 and
can _watch_ my PADI packets go out and be answered by a PADT instead of
a PADO ... *sigh*. Especially since my firewall most definitely lacks a
"start" button. Being put on hold for 3/4 of an hour only to be told
"yeah, telstra killed the DSLAM again and don't know when they'll have
it fixed" is rather annoying, too. If, of course, the support person
even knows what a DSLAM is.

WestNet (who I use at home) are very good about putting up _useful_
recorded messages when there's a fault, so I rarely need to talk to
support at all. When I do, I leave a message and they call me back - no
hold times. They really do call back, too. Unlike the iISP I use at
work, who "are currently experiencing technical difficulties" but choose
not to say /what/ difficulties until you get a support person - who may
not know anyway. And that's if the line isn't _engaged_.

Getting in touch with isp's for other matters is also important in my
experience, like being able to talk to someone that understands what a
traceroute is when you suspect one of their links is broken or being able
to talk to someone when your CC gets billed double :)

"Umm... what's an MX record? I don't think we support those."
(*sound of person on other end of phone gnawing on arm*)

I guess with the reliability of service being provided and the
features/prices becoming so similar, support is really one of the
last metrics to measure a good isp :)

Mail servers, too. The reliability of the basic connectivity seems to be
determined largely by Telstra's present level of incompetence, but the
mail servers can be a big difference between ISPs. I don't use ISP mail
servers anymore, having long since given up in frustration, but if you
need to it's a good idea to find out who is reliable.

apple product is a great product and lives up to its name.

i could go into wine mode and blame every body for the failure of the
apple centre but i wont, what i will do is tell you if you don't start
helping out the apple centres around like chris and mike they wont be
around, the only way an apple centre will work in perth is if the
manager is an owner, you cant find people to work 60 to 70 hours a week
and put in the dedication unless its there money at stake.

yes the margins are low
yes the administration of an apple centre is near psychotic
yes its hard to find staff that are not tainted by the industry and
when you do they have no idea of the products.

and after all that you don't have in stock what the customer wants.

well you can guess what happens then,

put it in to perspective, and you know i have vented my spleen on this
point before, if you don't spend money at the apple centres and i don't
mean ink carts every 6 months because you cant steel them from work
this month, they will all close, and the only one that will suffer is
you, look at all the gate way customers were are they now.

Indeed iinet is good.

I too have been a customer since 94' ish, however when they couldnt provide
DSL how I wanted it, I went to westnet. I required a static IP and my class
C to be routed, I also wanted a bridged connection. iiNet were not flexible,
so I moved. I've not had any downtime in over a year... :)

I know this is probably gonna meet with some resistance, but here goes. I
just don't see the Mac as a 'Joe Public' consumer product. I know that's the
way Apple is tilting its marketing, but it's just not how I see it. I tend
to see their products as basically UNIX workstations, mostly of interest to
those who regularly use UNIX-style systems, or just happen to prefer them
over Windows solutions. When I decided to start investigating a UNIX based
laptop, I ended up deciding on an iBook, mostly because I could get a UNIX
system on it without having to worry about hardware compatability issues,
which was something that Intel-based laptops running Linux or FreeBSD, or
any UNIX for that matter, couldn't offer. So in the end I've grown to see
Apple as offering specialised products for a niche market of experts. I like
their products, but I wouldn't recommend them to my end-user friends.
Let the flame war commence. :P

I tend to agree. Those dep't stores like to sell WinXP PCs overpriced
sufficiently severely as to be _almost_ as expensive as a mac, but
people will still buy the cheaper one 95% of the time. As such, I don't
see Apple making much headway in dep't stores.

Lots and lots! The only way to succeed is to diversify the product that is
sold in the stores, and Apple aren't too keen on that :-) And that doesn't
mean printers and other third party items, as places like PLE sell more
cheaply and in much bigger bulk than an AppleCentre. Either Apple have to
loosen the rules up a bit more for being an AppleCentre, or increase margins
again.

Let's hope that no more stores fall by the wayside. And for those who
dislike the stores, boo hoo to you! The less these remaining stores are
supported, the less likely Joe Public will buy a Mac.. And we don't

It's a pretty accurate picture of the story. For an AppleCentre to be
profitable, they need to to sell everything at full retail price and
they need to sell a lot.

Sadly, not many customers want to pay full retail price these days.
This means that there may not be many places to buy Apple computers in

to ask if I want to get the same phone from them (very cheap of course). Now I
am getting these emails on a daily basis, which is very annoying.
I am not sure how they obtained my direct email address, or is it some bug in
eBay that allows them to send email to me via the "Ask seller a question" when
I am not even the seller!
I have emailed ebay about this but have yet got a reply from them.

File Buddy is one utility which springs to mind as having a batch
file-renaming feature. The catch is, of course, that with any
batch-renaming activity all you are doing is replacing one sequential
coding system with another. If you want each filename to be uniquely
descriptive then you're back to renaming each file individually.

ebay G5 bargain

2004-01-14 Thread Vinko Sura
Ah, yes, I was also surprised to see such tasty bargains on eBay the other
day. They were actually closed auctions, you couldn¹t bid on them without
pre-approval. I emailed the seller to see what the deal was, and I got the
same garbage email that you got. I went back the same afternoon and eBay had
closed this and about 5 other dodgy auctions. Another person was selling a
G4 Powerbook, top of the range, for about AU$1700, and you could buy it
straight away! If only you could really get Powerbooks at that price =(

Subject: ebay G5 bargain
From: Lindsay Adams <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi all

Was surfing ebay the other night and came across this "sweet" deal. =20
supposedly these nice people in Italy send you a new G5 and a 23 inch=20
cinema screen for the below price and they pay for postage/delivery. =20
The delivery cost alone from italy to Aust for the UPS 48 hours service=20=

for an item of this size is around $1000.

I'm sure they'll manage to rip some poor fellows of. Is similiar group=20=

that were peddling plasma screens and digital camera recently.

If you want a laugh check out ebay.

the guys whose email they have highjacked usually sells crockery :o).

sadly the ebay group refuses to axe auctions like this which are=20
clearly bogus. apparently no crime committed until they actually rip=20
someone off.

Just another example of buyer beware, and keep those passowrds secure.

Lindsay

Hello Lindsay,
=A0
If you agree with what i am going to propose to you we have a deal.
First of all i need your full name and address,so i can make a=20
reservation at UPS service for sending the package and you will have it=20=

in 48 hours at your place.
Look below are all the details I think you need to close this deal
quick and successfully.
=A0
I'm sales representative for an US corporation that trades its products=20=

and since the end of November l'm working for their Italian office.
THE BUY IT NOW PRICE FOR THIS PRODUCT IS AU $2,699.00 WITH SHIPMENT=20
INCLUDED and you can buy it without winning the auction.
Right now l'm located in Palermo (country: Italy) because here I meet=20
my source directly in the factory.
The product is brand new, factory sealed with all the accessories.
=A0
It is an US model and will come with warranty fully transferable to=20
your name.
It will come with the receipt from the authorized dealer and there will=20=

be no problem for you to use the warranty.
=A0
Shipping: l will ship via UPS but you can choose other mail
carrier .ltusually takes 48 hours till the package arrives to your=20
door. l
will cover the shipping and insurance costs.
Payment: l'm a serious seller with more than 2 years of experience in
this field.
l'm a fair trader with a very good feedback on ebay which is the proof=20=

that l have closed a lot of successful deals.
During this period l learned that best deals are made when the
risk involved is minimum.
You will arrange payment through western union.
I have something safe for you because I want you to be sure that
you will receive the product and I hope we will collaborate in the
future too because I want to develop this business as soon as possible.
Look what I can do for you:
-you will make the transfer to my location but not to my name(you will=20=

use your best friends name for example as receiver's name)so you can be=20=

sure that I will not pick up the money until you get the product. So you=20=

make a deposit at western union and you will give me the transfer's=20
details(SENDER'S NAME,RECEIVER'S NAME,MTCN) so i can check that the=20
deposit was made.
After i verify I will send you the product immediately and email
you the tracking number from UPS.
-only after you will receive the product and check if it OK you will
have to change the of the transfer to my name so i can collect my money.
=A0
So until you will NOT have the product in your hands money will be=20
deposited in your best friend's name at an western union agent.
My old buyers of course make the transfer at western union directly to=20=

my
name which is easier and i will be happy if you can trust me in doing=20
so but because it is our first deal i proposed you this very safe and=20
efficient method so you can only deposit the money first and after you=20=

will get the product to allowed me to cash it.
Probably this payment method it is not very familiar to you but since i
am in Italy (where is a lot of bureaucracy ) l am used to it each of my=20=

customers being satisfied with it. l have to admit that it is the most=20=

efficient process to go through.
Return policy: 20 days.my suppliers only approved this kind of=A0 deal=20=

and that is why i have to follow his desire.

G5 Rackmount Kit?

2004-01-14 Thread Antony N. Lord
I'm looking at making a dual G5 machine "luggable" by putting it in a
5RU rack flight case (with removable front / back end.)

Anyone know if there is a "rack mount kit" for a G5?

I've trawled Google without luck...

And no - I don't think I can afford a G5 Xserve ;)

Cheers, Antony.
