Re: iPod/iTalk voice recording

2004-11-17 Thread Greg Sharp
I don't know if this applies but some info from the iPodLounge site forums
(though I don't know how accurate this is)/

It seems the italk requires a Dynamic microphone, not a condenser mic.

Many others reported problems with external mics and there were claims
Griffin had acknowledged the problem. I went to Griffins site but could find
no mention. It may be worth contacting their support.

All the best

iPod/iTalk voice recording

2004-11-17 Thread Edward Arrowsmith

Hi Paul

I have the plug to go into iTalk.

The amp is for an audience. There is an output on the amp which works
when plugged into a Windows laptop but not when plugged into
iTalk/iPod.

I have recorded successfully so far by recording from the PA speaker

I am going to try using another line from the amp to the iPod.

I don't know about 'as good as Protel', but there was this on
Macintouch the other day

ADsoft released the first Mac OS X version of its EAGLE Layout
Editor, a printed circuit board design tool. The software, which
requires the use of Apple's X11 window manager, offers up to 16
signal layers, undo/redo for any editing command to any depth,
electrical rule check, an integrated text editor, a full set of
parts libraries, and much more. The EAGLE Layout Editor is available
in Light, Standard, and Professional versions with prices ranging
from $49 to $399. It runs on Mac OS X 10.3 with X11, Linux kernel
2.x and up, and Windows.

I also tried out Darwine recently. Bizarre seeing the Windows RegEdit
app running on your Mac under X11... I expect that Protel (or at
least Access) probably won't work, sadly, but it might be worth a try.

Have fun,

Although I agree with you as I am mostly a linux user I have to make two
points here:

1) It sounds as if you are purchasing internal modems which are often
"winmodems" meaning that the modem function is done in software rather
than hardware. These are always bad news and you are always better off
buying an external modem.

2) A lot of internal modem manufacturers include drivers which once
installed will never allow your modem to work unless you format and
reinstall the drivers (Netcomm were the worst offenders of this and they
kept shipping the faulty drivers for about 3 years despite knowing that
they didn't work).

So don't believe anyone who says XP is the greatest OS ever invented and
Macs are too expensive or too hard to set up. My Mac just keeps on working.

So, again, although I agree with you, you can't blame these problems on
Windows as they are partly to do with poor choices of hardware and the
rest of the blam belongs to the modem manufacturers.

For my money XP has built up more bad will than maybe win95 and 98 put

Updates do nothing more than patch leaks, and post-install proceedures
take longer than the install itself!

When I tell a newbie they *need* a firewall and antvirus and spy/adware

Sure enough she had given me the wrong info.

one side and Appleworks Startup on the other. Reading back to me from her
damaged original disk it stated for 2e or 2c ProDOS etc691-007-B

I'm a one-eyed Mac user, and have been since the 80s (although I do admit to
owning 1 PC). When I upgraded from 10.2 to 10.3, my second screen declined
to work properly (due to video card driver problems). Since then, it's been
unfixable :-(. I expect this sort of behavior from my PC, but was
disappointed when it happened on a Mac for the first time. Oh, well...

By the way, the second screen still runs happily on the rare occasions when
I boot into OS9.

My interpretation of what you mean is a USB Hub. If you mean can you
have more than one USB connected device connected to a single USB port
on your computer then the answer is yes. There are many USB Hubs on the
market. They connect to your computer's USB port and have several
[usually four, I think] USB ports in the device which you can then
connect several USB peripherals to. I have a 4 port USB Belkin hub
connected to one of my TiPB's USB ports. Then I have a printer,
scanner, wireless mouse receiver and digital camera card connecter
connected to the 4 ports. My USB Hub has external power supply. You can
get them which draw power from your computer's USB port but I believe
that external power is best.

As has been mentioned on a number of previous occasions on this list, the
easiest and cheapest solution software-wise is iMovie (and iDVD if you wish
to output to DVD).

Hardware-wise, there are a number of options including one new one just
released yesterday:

- Just released ConvertX Plexor USB 2.0 analog video TV tuner and PVR. It
also allows you to plug a VCR or other video source in to capture from at up
to 720x480. I haven't used this yet and haven't seen any reviews, but it
looks like a reasonable option if you don't already have a DV camera:
US$229 The EyeTV software provides basic video editing
or you can use Quicktime Pro or import (convert) into iMovie.

- Alchemy TV also does the TV tuner thing and captures full screen, full
motion analog video. This is a PCI card so you need a Mac with PCI slots
(PowerMac G4 or G5) We've had good results with several of these cards.
This is probably the cheapest option at Aus$215 for high quality analog
video capture
http://miglia.com/products/video/alchemytvdvr/index.html

- DV video camera acting as an analog to DV converter (as Stephen describes
above). I've used this many times quite successfully. Just make sure the
camcorder is recent enough to support AV input. Our old Sony DCR-TRV7
camcorder doesn't and neither do camcorders sold in Europe (due to
legislation banning the feature I believe! This has I think (hope!) changed
in recent years)

- Analog-Firewire video converters. The Canopus ADVC-100 series has worked
well for us
http://www.canopus-aust.com/AU/products/ADVC-100/pm_advc-100.asp Aus$650
as has the Miglia Directors Cut
http://miglia.com/products/video/director2/index.html

- The cheapest option is various USB v1.0 video capture dongles but they
only capture at quarter screen resolution so I don't recommend them. We do
have a number of Mac OS X compatible XLR8 Interview USB v1.0 video capture
interfaces (Aus$85 if I recall) and use them successfully for some low-end
tasks.
