Copying DVD to HD

2006-09-04 Thread Severin Crisp
In all the discussion on copying from DVD to HD no one has mentioned
Cinematize. Though not free it is feature packed and way better than
Handbrake. It will not handle copy protected stuff, you have to pre-
treat them with Mac the Ripper. I use Cinematize regularly for
grabbing short clips from off-air recording to DVD and find it user
friendly and reliable.

Tried formatting to Mac OS extended on the iBook but my iMac still
would not recognise it.
On the iMac after using Disk Utility to format it (DOS or Mac) it
appears on the screen. I can drag items to it and when it is plugged
into the iBook the dragged files are available. Plugging back into
the iMac it gives the message that there are no Mac OS volumes to read
and my options are to ignore, eject or erase!! Ignoring produces
nothing.

When setting up for erasing/reformatting in Disk Utility there is a
line that says: Connection ID unknown. Any ideas at whether this is
the problem? If so, what does one do?

H !
I had a problem recently giving similar symptoms for a Hard Drive in
OS9.2

that turned out to be an incorrect Mac ROM file in the System Folder .
There's a story to tell about how that happened !

It's important to match your hardware ( iMac Model ) and Firmware with
your System software .

So the question is , Have you the right version of OSX 10.2.8 for
the Firmware

on your iMac ?

Can you boot into OS9.2 ? Can you then see the Flash card ?

Since there was a special download for 10.2.8 , but not 10.3
what about upgrading to 10.3 ?

I have no problems with Safari generally for banks, etc., but there
is one online database which opens data sheets into a smaller window
on the page, rather than allowing me to see it fully. I can scroll

I have to use Windows to do my stats etc. Even in Windows, you have

I too have had the same problems with Safari. I think it must have been
something to do with the last update, and last Java update. Kept
quitting for no reason.

At the moment I have been trialling Omniweb. Very nice browser with
some great new features, but its not free ($25US). Another browser you
might want to check out is Shiira. 2.0 is currently in beta testing,
but will be free and is built from Apple's Webkit.

Re: Printing upside down

2006-09-04 Thread Eugene

How about using Appleworks?

In the word processor just do you normal (right way up) text for the
questions.

To create the upside down answers hold the Option key whilst dragging
the mouse. This will create a text box. Enter the answers in the text
box. Select the rotate tool and rotate 180°. Easy.

If you want to embed the graphics block into the text cut it and
select the Text tool and paste it, this makes the text block move
with the normal text.

  Eugene

Re: coping DVD to HD

2006-09-04 Thread Mark Secker
if it's non copy protected and if you want to keep it in DVD file
format then you can just drag and drop the video folder.

I have been using "DVD Backup" for extracting stuff off of
commercial copy protected works (for legit, all paper work signed
academic purposes only you understand), However I've noticed that
there are some DVD's don't work with that.

Howdy,
how can I copy of DVD disk to my HD
the files in finder show up as
AUDIO_TS
VIDEO_TS
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB

is it a simple drag and drop into a new folder which I locate in the
" Movies" Folder

Super Talent Flash

2006-09-04 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond
Yesterday I was presented with a Super Talent Ultra Flash USB 2.0
Flash Memory Drive of 1GB. The information cards says it is
compatible with USB 2.0 or 1.1. The information cards also asserts
'Plug and Play and easy to use'. Well, not on my iMac G4 running OS
X 10.2.8.
Visited their website at www.supertalent.com and found a patch for
10.2.8. Downloaded but my Stuffit Expander wouldn't (v7.0).
Downloaded Stuffit upgrade (8.0.2), appropriate for my system and
unstuffed the offending file. Installed the patch. No joy. My
wife's iBook running 10.4.7 can see it in DOS format or MacOS
extended.

Any ideas or do I give my Father's Day gift to my wife?

Hi
Ever since putting 10.4 on my, G3/350, about a year ago,I have been
tormented by the spinning disk and voice telling me "Safari is

I seem to remember, about two years ago, a member answering this

Does it ring a bell with anyone?

HI Gary,

If you are not too concerned about the quality, just use Handbrake. It
will suck the DVD down to an mpeg4 file.

Hi Michael

Get him to try the following and it may work.

Go to System Preferences, then Network. Then edit (Configure) the
configuration he's using (Ethernet I'd imagine)
The window should open up into "Show: Built-in Ethernet"
Click on the tab for "TCP/IP"
About half way down is the "DNS Servers".
In here put in the Amnet DNS Numbers. You might have to get this from them
as I've looked through their website and it's either not there, or really
well hidden. (Edit, ignore that,..google is great)
Here are the DNS numbers:-
203.161.127.1
203.153.224.42
203.30.44.23
203.30.44.24

Put those in, and click Apply Now. Quite out of System Preferences and try
it. He should fine it then works fine.

And on a side note, it would appear it's something that a few others have
had problems with.

But you should find that fixes the problem.

Hope it helps.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Hi Mark,

Is is streamed stuff from sites like YouTube/GoogleVideo etc, or from a
streaming QT/Real/WMV server?

There is a website called keepvid.com, which will save flash movies from
a variety of YouTube-like sites. It saves it as a flash file though, so
you will have to convert with a program like ffmpeg. Otherwise, there
are a couple of similar programs on the Mac that will take a direct link
from YouTube etc and convert them straight to a iPod-compatible mp4
file. One is Tubesock ($15US), or you can use the free iSquint to
covert the flv file to mp4 easily.

As for the other streaming method, doesn't vlc have a capture facility?
A hidden cache file somewhere?

Bob
When I upgraded Toast 5.0.1 to 5.2 to use on OSX I didn't get the
suite (perhaps I failed to press a correct button), and so I still
have the OS9 version of Spin Doctor and it works independently of
Toast until you need to burn a disk.

DNS Timeout

2006-09-04 Thread Michael Hawkins
My son has seen the light and bought a MacBook. His ISP is Amnet on a 8mbs
service. Almost every time he attempts to retrieve a webpage he either gets
a "DNS timed out" error message which comes up as soon as he hits the
"return" key, or the connection stalls just after the progress colour bar
has coloured in the http://www part of the url. If he hits the refresh
button, the website is immediately displayed on his screen.

He is using OS 10.4.7 (combo update), has repaired permissions, and has
installed Safari Debugger. He has the problem on Safari and on Firefox.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
