Hi Chris

What's the reason you are given in the e-mail you receive letting you
know that your e-mail could not be delivered.

Messages can get returned for various reasons such as

No such Address
Mail box full
Attachment to large
and much much more

Most of the time the answer is given in their e-mail you receive back
in Plain English. But sometimes you get error numbers which are very
Unhelpful

Also to note is that when Windows machines are infected by certain
SPAM bots they harvest the infected machine's address book and will
not just send to people in the address book but also fake the from
address using addresses in the address book. Some of the more
sophisticated ones also harvest these addresses and send them back to
a central list. If they use your address as the from/reply to field
(which is just a text field and can be anything like [EMAIL PROTECTED]
if you want) and send to a deleted address (or a server that has
their spam filter set to respond with a invalid address response to
spam then you will get these messages

I've received spam that, going by the to from fields has come from
me, being sent to to me but the path shows that it's come from else
were.

Also spamers sell/trade/steal mail address lists between each other.

so if your getting undeliverable messages addressed to people
you've never heard of then one of the above is what's probably
happening.

After using rechargeable batteries of all sizes for well over 25
years now, I have experienced only 1, yes! 1 single battery with a
slight corrosion of the casing and no serious leaking.

That's not something I can say about the non-rechargeable ones. But
battery technology has progressed enormously these days and I cannot
see you having major problems with the new breed of rechargeable
anyway.

Good luck with your mighty mouse,

Double finder

A friend of mine allowed his 2 yr old grandson to bash on the keyboard,
turning on various applications, which he turned off.

But since then the finder has every menu item doubled. Eg Shut down, or

He has re-booted but still the strange items appear. One of each set work.,
Eg if he clicks on Sleep there is no reaction from one, but the other will
make it sleep.

Any suggestions - apart from having greater control over his grandson!

Re: New iMac Advice

2008-05-02 Thread Mark Heeler
In the real world, having as much RAM as you can put in the computer does make
a difference unless you only have one or two programs open (or especially if
you have multiple users logged in). If you usually have half a dozen like I/we
do, with limited RAM, you will end up with some memory paging out to disk (and
a large swap file).

Install the free iStatMenus (memory module) and you can monitor this. If you
have a swap file at all, having more physical memory would have benefited you.
Have a look after you have used the computer in typical mode for a while to get
the real world statistics.

I initially upgraded my MacBook Pro from 2 to 4 and then, noticing the
difference, upgraded our iMac too.

Dear Bill and WAMUGgers

Not pretty but it's advice that has worked for me, from the techie
of a 1:1 laptop for kids program (MacBooks).

If the computer goes through the actions of attempting to eject,
then reloading the disk again, it is possible that the case is bent
at the CD slot. Use a flat screwdriver to gently (and later in my
experience more strongly) prise open the slot and restart while
holding down the mouse/trackpad. It took me about 10 attempts with
one of my trusty Year 7 helpers to extract the recalcitrant disk.
We discussed using tweezers too as the disk came to the edge of the
slot then went back in again. When finally my nimble-fingered 12
year old got hold of the disk and dragged it out, we found some
paper stuffed in there with it.

This may not be your problem with your G5 (iMac) but it's worth a try.

Have fun

Reg

Hi Bill,

I think it is possible for a slot load drive to end up half way open,
half way closed. I think this happened to me once, and I used a

to nudge a plastic lever that prompted the drive complete either its
insert action or its eject action (at which point it figured out
there

was no disc). I'm not sure if that is good advice for your situation!

There is another odd situation that can arise. If you have inserted a
blank disc while iTunes is open, but then not burnt a disc with
iTunes, then the rest of the computer loses track of the drive. The
solution (other than rebooting) is to open iTunes and press the Eject
button within iTunes itself.

James.

			Have G5, 10.4.11, 1.8Ghz, 768 mb Ram, I am unable to insert a CD
into the side slot, There is no indication on the desk top that one
is inserted, ( I am not absolutley convinced that there is a disk in
there! ) but I guess there must be one in ! )

I have done all the suggestions as in Mac Help which include
1.Pressing the eject on the key board, 2. Restarting with the mouse
button held down, 3. Pressing the eject button in Itunes. 4. Disk
utility to select disk before pressing eject, but there is no disk
shown to eject ? . 5. can't find an emergency eject hole to try
this

and now somehow an eject icon ( like the one on the Top right
keyboard button) has appeared in the Menu Bar which when you press
it it scrolls down saying Close Superdrive , thankfully nothing
happens when I press it, as I haven't a clue what would happen if it
did close it down,

I have exhausted my meagre knowledge on trying to
rectifying these,

I'd be grateful for any help ( not too technical ) as to 1.
rectifying the CD problem 2. getting rid of the Menu bar icon

OK !

There is always the standby option of creating a new user and starting
from that user
to help isolate the problem . I am guessing problem is in the User
preferences

but this will prove it .

Like : Is it in the preferences of the user or the System ?

Then I would be looking to trash the Finder preferences and doing a
restart .

User-Library-preferences - com.apple.finder.plist

Might need something else as well .

Hi Bill

Just quickly make sure you've tried everything written here
 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=51008

And if you have tried everything written here move onto this is
 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106752

Try this more than once if it doesn't work the first Time

If this does not work your only option left Is to take it to a
service centre
