Hello Richard,

Can you Open and use the Appleworks Application ok since the computer
shutdown?

If so, have you tried Opening AW's app and then got to File > Open and
see if you can open the file that way?

AW's has 'Auto-Save' which saves a copy under a code name in the
Appleworks Auto-save folder.

Documents > AppleWorks User Data > AutoSave.
You could try opening Appleworks application, then go to File > Open
and see if you can locate the file in the above location.

Hi Gary,

What Software Application did you update to v 4.1 Universal?

Its an architect orientated 3D Design software called BoA.

It started in 1996 as an offshoot of an app called Architrion - and
is an advanced sophisticated 3D solids modeler app. Version 2 was
released in about 2001. I took it up in 2003 version 2.4.6 and used
under OS 8.6/ 9.0 It required a Quickdraw 3D extension and printed
to postscript and written with MacApp. Evidently they were
developing some sophisticated 3D technology with Apple until Apple
pulled the pin and move onto OSX. This event seemed to slowed its
development quite a bit.

In late 2005 they released version 3, which could run under OS X via
Rosetta. all files were backwards compatible, in effect the software
didn't change at all- it maintained its basic functionality.

Then in late 2008 they issued a universal version to run natively
under OSX and written with XCode, but has numerous bugs. I was
hoping v 4.1 release would resolve some of the bugs but alas not
fully yet.

This saving bug might just be my machine after all.

I ought to add that the developers are French, who seem to run a
different line to the rest of us!

Architosh.com has a few articles on BoA
http://architosh.com/2009/03/mac-cad-boa-gets-minor-update-on-intel-version/

Thanks Gary,

I've previously read the forums on Architosh. Doesn't sound like BoA
will ever be as comprehensive as ArchiCAD.

BoA does have problems as you obviously already know ;-)

I can't understand though why you are unable to "Save" or "Save As" ...

Choosing "Save" simply saves your work by updating the last saved
version of the file to match the current version you see on your screen.

Choosing "Save As..." brings up a prompt to save your work as a file
with a different name. For example, you might choose to save a
document called "Design - rev. 3" as "Design - rev. 4". This way, you
can save your file at different stages and keep multiple versions on
your hard drive.

Choosing "Save" and then "Save As..." is also a good way to make a
backup of your file. Just be sure to rename the file something new
when you choose "Save As..." or you will overwrite the current saved
version, just like choosing the "Save" command would do.

Normally I've found if you are unable to ‘Save’ a file:
Do a ”Save as” instead of a ordinary ”Save”, thus overwriting the
original file.

Hope you can get it sorted.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Bill,

When you export to PDF
Best - the resolution of images isn't scaled down.
Better - images are downsampled to 150 dpi.
Good - images are downsampled to 72 dpi.

When you export to PDF with "Good", is the file size still too large?

Hi Bill
On average a full page of text in Pages amounts to 176 kb. Multiply
that by 30 and add in your header and you are close to the total
mentioned above. If you put further graphics on following pages then
the size goes up accordingly. The Good export reduces the file to
about 40% of it original size - less if no graphics.

PDF Compress is a useful tool as well.

Hi Ronni,

I have been using Good, Better and Best with very sim. results on
size. I found the solution. I took the PDF exported at "Best"
quality from Pages and re-opened in Acrobat 8 Pro. I then saved that
PDF using the "optimize" function. Size now 2.7MB - OK for my
purpose. I looked at the embedded fonts and found string of fonts I
had never heard of and unembedded them. Voila!

Thanks

Re: iWork problem

2009-08-09 Thread Eugene

Hi Bill,

pages imports the pictures and maintains the file size of the original
picture's document. In other words if you import a 3Mb picture file
into the pages document it still retains the original document size
even if you physically resize the picture to 2 cm x 2 cm thumbnail.

Now if you are using a version prior to Pages '09 you can look at the
contents of your Pages document by right clicking and ask to show
package content. You will then see which graphics are excessively obese.

Pages '09 has lost this attribute but you can still export it
backwards to Pages '08 and view the content's sizes and cull the
offenders.

  Regards,
  Eugene

I meant to also add that I use Acrobat 8 Pro to reduce a PDF further by:
1. Opening the Pages PDF in Acrobat 8 Pro
2. Go to: Document > Reduce File Size and my PDF ends up half the size
of my Pages PDF.

Hi Warwick ,

You do not say if you have done a totally shutdown or restart ! ?

I would do that first

then use disk utility to Repair Permissions !

If you are then still in trouble you need your Instal disks and load
the disk

up to where if asks if you want to instal

At that point check your drop down menus for the option
to change or reset passwords .

Do that ,
back out from the disk
restart from your G4 and see what you have
