Re: Label & addresses app.

2009-11-24 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi David & Bill,

I decided to have a fiddle around with a "Label Template" in Pages'09 to be
able to "Mail Merge" a "Group" from Address Book.
The completed Template will work with Avery Address Labels - 1” x 2-5/8” - 30
labels per sheet (5160, 5260, 5520, 5630, 5660, 5960, 8160, 8250, 8460, 8660) +
more.

Because I also needed (as David for his "Return to Sender") to be able to "Mail
Merge" just my own contact details with this Template, I also created a "Group"
in Address Book named "ME" (which only has my contact in it).

To use The Template:
1. Double click on "Address Labels.pages"
2. Once the Template opens in Pages go to Edit > Mail Merge
3. Select a Mail Merge Source (select Address Book), then Select your "Group"
4. Click "Merge"

One Page of 30 Labels for every person in your "Group" will be created.
If you only have one person in your "Group" (i.e - my "ME" Group), one page of
30 Labels will be created.

If this Template is useful to David & Bill (or anyone on list), you are welcome
to use it. I have not tried printing from it yet, as my Printer is at the
'Printer Doctor' :-(
I can email it to you if you wish to try it.

Cheers,
Ronni

 Hi All,
once again thanks to Ronda, Neil, Mervyn & Giuliana, for their input (
 always
willing to help ) I shall be using apples Address Book for printing my "
address labels ", as for the " return address" labels I have done those
 on my
" MS word 2004 " ( much to my disgust) I am amazed that Apples Address
 Book,
whilst it does almost everything relating to " mailing ", it does not have
this built into it. I certainly don't want to us "MS " by choice
.can anyone supply me with the email address of
the appropriate department at Apple, and I will send it to them to see if
they could consider putting it into Address book !

Once again thank you for all your time & help

Hullo Ronni

Did you mean that you have devised a Template of your own to work with Labels,
or were the instructions below, addressed to David and Bill, your guide for
working with the address book or with Keynote on the Apple?

If you have devised your own template to do this, if possible, I also would
very much appreciate working with your Template for Labels. At this stage I
have been continuing to use my Labels on my PC because I have them all set up
and I am very familiar with what I want to do. I would certainly be interested
in setting up all of this information on the Mac.

My attempts at using Avery Labels with the Mac did not quickly fall into line
with my wishes!

If this is possible Ronni that would be great.

Hi Bill,

Yes, you certainly did open a "Pandora's Box"! It got us thinking about labels.
I can never dismiss a challenge, I'm a compulsive solution solver, some people
think it is a weakness I have, others think it is a strength ;-)

Where do I get the time/effort ... I have no idea? I do know I don't sleep very
much!

I've emailed the "Address Labels.pages" to your private email address.

Hi Peta,

The Template is for Pages'09. It is for using "Mail Merge" of a "Group" from
Address Book, as explained below to David & Bill.

I'll email it to your private address and you can play around with it to see if
it suits your needs.

2009-11-24 Thread Reg Whitely

Thanks Ronni and Peter

I've tried these options and it still frustrates me. As it's only for
one day I'm about to pursue other options. I've already spent my
Market Day Sunday time commitment just trying to get a stupid printer
working, and I've got reports to finish!

Is there anyone out there willing to sponsor our little school with a
loan of a colour laser printer and toner, Mac compatible, this Sunday
for Beachlands Market Day!

Can anyone help me get a Lanier (Ricoh) Aficio SP C220N colour

on a MacBook Pro? There does not appear to be a Snow Leopard driver
and the Leopard software recognises the printer but I continuaslly
get "Print Error" message when trying to print. I desparately need
it working for my Photo Booth display at my school's Market Day

Hey Reg,

Matt Broughton on Apple Support Discussions has a solution for
printing in OS X 10.6 with this printer.

You can follow the tread & find the details here:

Quote:
"I think I found the solution. I loaded the driver version 1.11 from
here and set up the printer.

Next, open the Terminal (/Applications/Utiltites). Copy and paste
the following command into a Terminal window:

sudo chmod -R 775 /Library/Printers/Ricoh/

Then hit the Return or Enter key. Enter you password when prompted.

Hopefully, you will then be able to print."

WAMUG Meeting Reminder: 01 December 2009 (Please Do Not Reply)

2009-11-24 Thread Pete Smith
The end of the year doth fast approach - and the next WAMUG meeting even faster!

G'day again all WAMUGGERS.

Yep - it's nearly time for the last WAMUG meeting of the year, next Tuesday, 1
December 2009.

Topics for discussion are; in no particular order:

1. Parallels 5 (not to be confused with "Parallel Lines", that brilliant
Blondie album!)
2. Grapher (everyone has this, but did you know about it?)
3. New Apple Mouse
4. Mail revisited (we'll cover some things not covered last time)

Of course, don't forget the question and answer session at the beginning of
every meeting and a cuppa and biscuits at the end.

(ALSO: look for the "Annual WAMUG Christmas Barbecue" notification also sent
out today.)

(Details are subject to change without notice)

Location: Geology building 312, Curtin University, Bentley.
Time: 7.30pm - 9.00pm
WAMUG meets in the large meeting room just inside the front door of
the building

Annual WAMUG Christmas Barbecue: 13 December 2009

2009-11-24 Thread Pete Smith
G'day WAMUGGERS.

I'll bet you'll have a burning desire to plug this into your iCal.

The Annual WAMUG Christmas Barbecue will be held at 12:00 noon on Sunday, 13th
December 2009 in the grounds of the old Heathcote Hospital.

Click the following link to locate the venue in Google Maps:

Streetsmart map ref: 402 D4

All offers of help with the preparation will be most welcome.

All meat, condiments and soft drinks will be provided, but please let us know
by Friday, 4 December if you intend to come along so we can get an idea of
numbers. This will help immensely in estimating quantities. Entry is free to
all WAMUG members, but a gold-coin donation by non-members would be welcome.

Regards,

Pete Smith

NOTE:If you want to print envelopes, first make sure your printer is

Yes, (referring to your reply to Bill) - I also wonder where you find the time
to respond to various cries for help whenever I see your name pop up on this
list - and this seems to be more and more frequently. I guess that it must be
a compulsion with you to answer each challenge, and I personally have certainly
benefited from your replies.

Please take a break over Christmas!

 Hi David & Bill,

I decided to have a fiddle around with a "Label Template" in Pages'09 to
be able to "Mail Merge" a "Group" from Address Book.
The completed Template will work with Avery Address Labels - 1” x 2-5/8” -
 30 labels per sheet (5160, 5260, 5520, 5630, 5660, 5960, 8160, 8250, 8460,
 8660) + more.

Because I also needed (as David for his "Return to Sender") to be able to
"Mail Merge" just my own contact details with this Template, I also
created a "Group" in Address Book named "ME" (which only has my contact in
 it).

 To use The Template:
 1. Double click on "Address Labels.pages"
 2. Once the Template opens in Pages go to Edit > Mail Merge
 3. Select a Mail Merge Source (select Address Book), then Select your
 "Group"
 4. Click "Merge"

One Page of 30 Labels for every person in your "Group" will be created.
If you only have one person in your "Group" (i.e - my "ME" Group), one
page of 30 Labels will be created.

If this Template is useful to David & Bill (or anyone on list), you are
welcome to use it. I have not tried printing from it yet, as my Printer is
 at the 'Printer Doctor' :-(
I can email it to you if you wish to try it.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Hi Michael,

You can safely ignore this message. It is accurate but not a cause for concern.

iPhone mail

2009-11-24 Thread Pedro

Good morning all

I seem to be having some problems with my iPhone (3GS) mail.
It seems to be receiving mail ok as I just received Ronni's last post. When I
try to open the application it stays open for about 1 sec trying to connect
then crashes.

I have turned it off several times have looked at all the mail setting and they
are ok.
Is a complete restore the next step?

any help gratefully received

Re: Odd desktop behaviour

2009-11-24 Thread Jon Davison

Uh oh, I think something is amiss!

All open windows on the desktop have the max/min buttons grey'd out.
Apps with other windows like Mail work fine, so it looks like it may
be a Finder problem. Trying to select anything
on the desktop takes forever and as I am typing this, these desktop
actions are going off minutes later.

Grey'd out windows in background all move around the screen (at the
right speed it seems) but cannot access anything. Dock is okay, Safari
opens okay and browser works no problem.

Mac OS X 10.5.6/2 x 2.66 dual core/2GbRAM.

Any thoughts on this please?

Thanks
Jon

Hi Jon,

In order, I would try:

Quit the Finder with File- Quit.
  restart
check that you have 10% disk space free on your system drive

Re: Odd desktop behaviour

2009-11-24 Thread Jon Davison

Further to my last posting a few minutes ago. Now I cannot select
anything on the desktop, including any drives, internal or external.
Mail still works fine as does Photoshop and other apps.
When in Photoshop, cannot access the desktop at all. So no access to
the HD. Force Quit shows no sign of Finder probs etc. Cannot access
Disk Utilities either. Should I reboot from system
disk and try Disk Utilities? or does this look like a deeper issue?
hope not.

Thanks again
Jon

2009-11-24 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi John,

1.Can you get to Home > Library > Preferences and drag "com.apple.finder.plist"
to the trash.
2.Empty the Trash
3.Relaunch Finder

Also you should download and install the OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update

Cheers,
Ronni

Extracting audio from iTunes video

2009-11-24 Thread rb...@iinet.net.au

Hi

Our dance teacher bought a video clip from itunes.

She wants to extract the audio from it to use in a dance production as mp3.

Unfortunately the files is in a "protected format" and we don't seem to be having any luck with iMovieHD or FCP.

Due to OS upgrade i don't seem to have QT Pro any more.

Any ideas please?

many thanks

Blitto
