Hi Again All and Brian

Regarding Digital Footprints: There is a lot ofwebsites dedicated to finding
people and their various information. I run a Safari Extension
called Rapportive Which takes a users e-mail
address and checks against various social networks.

Personally I track what people are saying about me publicly using Google
Alerts, facebook and twitter Searches. and I make sure I keep my Google
Profile up-to-date.

Hi All and Brian

I believe you're talking about Firesheep a Firefox plug-in that was released
two weeks ago. At a hacking conference somewhere in the US. I won't go into
this too much but definitely worth having a look

Here's the important information how to protect yourself.

   1. Do not use public WiFi (that his unsecured)
   2. Use a script that forces the use of HTTPS

How you can protect others if you operate your own wireless router turn on
encryption requires WPA OR WPA2 apparently this encrypts the users traffic
between the user and the wireless router. then you can either hand out the
password where publicly OR you can place the password were in SSID

There's probably a lot more solutions out there now since I last checked
last week sometime.

Also probably Worth a listen if you want a lot more information.

2010-11-05 Thread Eugene
Unfortunately we all leave a digital footprint and more powerful search algorithms are being developed that can connect the dots and garner very explicit details. At this stage it is probably already too late for most of us to start covering our backsides if we want to have some degree of anonymity on the web. The government and private agencies especially those associated with recruitment already have accurate profiles on most people. Companies like Google and Facebook already sell our private data to other agencies. (This is how a 'free' service can become a multibillion dollar company in just a few years).

Hi Wamug,

Just Googled my name today, after listening to ABC 720 discussing computer
security.
One topic was people can 'watch and catch your passwords and other log in
details' you when you use free, unsecured, wireless connection (with the right
program.)

and the WAMUG list archives comes up with my name. So?
Many of the people on the list openly share their Apple products and
accessories' specifications (required to assist in the problem solving),,, and
- sent form my iPad/iPhone/Macbook... could this be a security issue? Burglary
target? How much of a search to get addresses and other details would be

Perhaps a basic log-in password could be considered,

I worked my way through everything and finally it worked on the PMU reset.

Now everything is working fine but...just an observation

When I looked for the Bluetooth Icon in the Internet & Network section of
 the
System Preferences window I could not find it so at first I thought it had
 not
worked. boo hoo. But I noticed a change in the shape of the window of the
Hardware Section which had grown to two lines. Why? Because Bluetooth is
 now
sitting at the front of it! (PowerBook 1GHz G4 10.5.8). Then I compared
 it
with the iMac (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 10.6.4) with Bluetooth in System
Preferences sitting in Internet and Wireless. Why is it so?

Good job I looked, thanks for the help guys, most appreciated, have a great
 weekend.

Hi Again All

Regarding Roger's comments on the large size of the Mac Pro he has got me
wondering if the next version of the Mac Pro is destined for a redesign the
current look has been around for quite a while now.

Maybe we're looking at a redesign incorporating various design elements from
the Mac Pro, Xserve and Xserve RAID

The server software is the same so yes, but no dual power supplies and in a
much bigger form factor than the xserve.

So I am very disappointed and will now have to consider windows servers instead

Re: Apple discontiune Xserve - get them while they last

2010-11-05 Thread Daniel Kerr

Hi Philippe

I thought that too,..but I looked at the specs, and it comes with one
SuperDrive with the option to add the second one as well. :o) (Same as the
standard machine). But yes,..like your thinking. :)
And nope sorry,..all the same ports. :o)
2x Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth, Firewire, USB2, Sound in and out. Same ports
on the front and back :)

Looked those up too. Was determined to check it all,... :o)

But yes, you were thinking the same way as me.

Thanks Philippe

Kind Regards
Daniel

Good evening Daniel and all,

I think that the Server does not have a Super Drive, and it would not
surprise me that it would also not have the full communications
facilities (?).

I may be wrong though.

Re: Apple discontiune Xserve - get them while they last

2010-11-05 Thread Daniel Kerr

I notice they've now added the "Mac Pro Server" version to the Apple Store
as well.

Though,..am I missing something here:-
(OK,..here goes). From the Apple Online Store.
 MacPro

Quad-Core
One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor
3GB (three 1GB) memory
1TB hard drive
SuperDrive
ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1GB GDDR5
A$ 3,499.00

If you configure this to be the same as the Server model on the store with
8GB RAM and the second Hard Drive it comes in at $4224

Server
One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor
8GB (four 2GB) memory
Two 1TB hard drives
SuperDrive
Mac OS X Server unlimited-client license
ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1GB GDDR5
A$ 3,799.00

Now if you wanted to run Snow Leopard Standard on it, you'd buy that for
either $39 (although that's the upgrade from Leopard version) or the full
Mac Box Set so as to get iLife and iWork as well. That's $169.
Total $3968.

So,..by my thinking,.you buy the server plus MacBox Set for $3968. Save $256
AND get a full OSX Server unlimited client license.

Again,..I ask,..am I missing something there??? Lol :)
(I only just threw that together,..so I could have overlooked something and
I used all the pricing straight from the Apple online store RRP pricing of
course)

Kind Regards
Daniel

Re: Apple discontiune Xserve - get them while they last

2010-11-05 Thread Roger Kortas

That is very sad, I have been fighting to keep xserves at the office and I have
12 of them and was about to buy another but will now have to give some more
thought to it.

Yes I know I can get a MacPro but rack space is tight and to have 1 MacPro
taking 12u just isn't on :(

 Hi Matt,

Yep, Daniel has answered your query.
I couldn't help but smile at your "why is it so". It brought back memories
 of
Why is it so? - the ground-breaking TV series with the enigmatic Professor
Julius Sumner Miller - ran on the ABC from 1963 to 1986. Professor Miller's
infectious enthusiasm for physics delighted, educated and entertained
generations of Australians, most of whom have at some point asked each
 other
'Why is it so?' in the characteristic Julius Sumner Miller voice.

I think I watch every episode of that settees :-)

Enjoy your weekend ... And Daniel, for goodness sake, get some sleep.
Working 48 hours (& more) without sleep is NOT GOOD!
 I know this is so!

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Re: Wireless keyboard wont connect anymore

2010-11-05 Thread Ronda Brown

Thank you Daniel ;-)
Yep, that did give me a walk down memory lane!
I hated Physics at school, but Julius Sumner Miller did make it more fun than
my teachers.
I learnt to understand Physics more from JSM than from my teachers or text
books.
And learnt to research "Why is it so"!

Sleep is what you used to do in another life time ... When you were not a 'Mac
Consultant'!
It's a far distant memory for you ;-)

Cheers,

If the bluetooth hardware is not being seen on your PowerBook.
Do as Daniel suggested: Firstly try A PRAM reset and if that doesn't help
 a
 PMU reset.
If neither of these do the trick, it would need to be seen by Daniel as the
Bluetooth Module could be loose or not connected.

 Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
 Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You
will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
 Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key
combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup
 sound
 for the second time.
 Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The
 clock
settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

Resetting PMU on PowerBook or iBook computers
In some troubleshooting situations, if resetting PRAM does not resolve an
issue, resetting the PMU may be the next appropriate step. For information
 on
when this is appropriate and for instructions on how to reset the PMU in
 your
PowerBook computer, see Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit
 (PMU).

Bluetooth Module could be loose or not connected.

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will
need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination
before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound
for the second time.
Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock
settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

Resetting PMU on PowerBook or iBook computers
In some troubleshooting situations, if resetting PRAM does not resolve an
issue, resetting the PMU may be the next appropriate step. For information on
when this is appropriate and for instructions on how to reset the PMU in your
PowerBook computer, see Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit
(PMU).

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Ronni, No Problems, no I did mention in the post that Bluetooth is not even
listed in System Preferences. That was one of the first places I went to try
and find out why it wasn't showing up.

Daniel I followed your instructions and Hardware>Bluetooth it says "No
information found."

I am just starting to repair disk permissions as a first step.

Re: Wireless keyboard wont connect anymore

2010-11-05 Thread Daniel Kerr

Hi Matt

If it's not showing up in System Preferences then sounds like the Bluetooth
module isn't getting recognised.
You can double check it if you go to Apple menu - About this Mac. Click on
"More Info"
Under Hardware then Bluetooth, if it says the say thing " No Bluetooth
Hardware Found" then it means it's not being seen by the computer.
Could be it's either come loose a little (best case scenario) or something
has happened to it hardware wise (Worst case scenario).

You can also try a PRAM reset and a PMU reset.
More info here:-

Let us know how you go.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Hi Matt,

Don't take this the wrong way, but do you have Bluetooth turned ON in System
Preferences > Internet & Wireless - Bluetooth "On" & "Discoverable"?

Post back if you have and we will give more ideas.

Wireless keyboard wont connect anymore

2010-11-05 Thread Matt Falvey
Hi, my wireless keyboard had been lost by my Powerbook! I hadn't changed
anything, at least I don;t think I did. At first I thought the batteries had
gone flat, so I recharged them and it was still not recognised.

I had a hunt around the web for solutions and one was to ditch,
com.apple.Bluetooth.plist from my User/Library/Preferences and reboot which I
did. Didn't change anything.

Bluetooth is not listed in my System Preferences window under Internet &
Network any more? When I go to Utilities and click on Bluetooth Setup
Assistant.app I get the message "No Bluetooth Hardware Found" in order to use
this application you must have a Bluetooth module. Please verify that your
Bluetooth hardware is properly attached to the computer. The same reply comes
when I try to launch Bluetooth File Exchange.app and Bluetooth Serial
Utility.app

Any ideas, I cant see how it disappeared without anything being done?

Thanks

Matt
