1 January to 31 December

The below Amendments to the WAMUG Constitution were passed at the ’Special
General Meeting’ May 2011
"The Special General Meeting of the WAMUG was held at 7.00 where the four
special resolutions (amendments) to the constitution were put to the meeting.
There were a number of proxy votes also received and, combined with the
personal votes made at the actual meeting, each individual special resolution
was carried unanimously."

“4.4Subscriptions
4.4.1 The annual subscriptions payable by Members of the Group shall be
determined at the Annual General Meeting, or a Special General Meeting where
the subject of subscriptions has been specifically included in the notice.
4.4.2 Subject to clauses 4.4.3, 4.4.4 and 4.4.5, the subscription period runs
for the calendar year (from 1 January to 31 December). Subsequent subscriptions
shall be due and payable within one month from 1 January each year.
4.4.3 Where an application for membership is received on or between 1 January
and 30 June, the initial subscription fee shall be for the full annual fee and
the initial subscription period shall expire on 31 December of that year.
4.4.4 Where an application for membership is received on or between 1 July
and 31 October, the initial subscription fee shall be for half the annual
subscription fee and the initial subscription period shall expire on 31
December of that year.
4.4.5 Where an application for membership is received on or between 1
November and 31 December, the initial subscription fee shall be for the full
annual fee but the initial subscription period shall expire on 31 December of
the following year.”

Annual Dues

2011-06-12 Thread Barry Sexstone

I hope one of the wise committee members may be able to help me.

I believe my membership payment is due as it is 12 months since I last paid.
The Constitution says renewal is due on the anniversary of being admitted as a
member. However I seem to recall that is was proposed that all subscriptions
be on a common date either 1 January or 1 July. Was this proposal passed at
the AGM? If so what is the payment date?

I have sent a couple of emails to Peter using the address
pe...@civiltech.com.au but have heard nothing in reply. It may be my emails
went to junk mail as this is a frequent problem I have presumably because of
the first part of my surname.

Peter,

My mate gave me an iBook and after pulling it apart had a 30Gb HD
which unfortunately doesn't boot, so I would appreciate your kind
offer.

I have found the iBooks are bit of a nightmare if you have to reassemble them.

Please let me know when I can visit.

All my computer refurbishing is to give machines to needy folk. I
have just disposed of 20 machines to North Lake Senior Campus and
their IT man along with student services will allocate them to the
most needy students. There are lots of African immigrants attending
NLSC and many of them don't have parents due to the various wars.

I will be putting images of the students who will take a computer
along with their bio on a web page so that people who donate
machines to me can see where their machine(s) end up.

Re: Spotlight Search Problem

2011-06-12 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Rick,

I’m pretty busy on Clients work, but a couple of quick questions.

Are you sure you have “Mail Messages” selected in Spotlight Preferences -
'Search Results’?

Also, you don’t have a “Previous System Folder” on your Computer which has an
older Mail Application in it?

Not a bad idea to Restart your computer and then “Repair Permissions”.

I’ll get back to you when I’m able.

Cheers,

Good morning Rick,

OK, I think firstly before we go through the Terminal Commands

To Re-Index your drive, do the following:

3. Click OK in the window that displays “Are you sure you want to

Give spotlight some time to re-index your drive before testing it
out.
The magnifying glass in the upper-right of your screen will pulse
during this time.

This forces Spotlight to Re-Index your Hard Drive.
Post back your results please.

Let it complete the re-indexing before you test it.

Good morning Rick,

OK, I think firstly before we go through the Terminal Commands again, I would
ask you to get Spotlight to ‘Re-Index’ your Hard Drive.

To Re-Index your drive, do the following:

1. Open System Preferences > Spotlight and select the Privacy tab.
2. Drag your hard drive icon from the Desktop into the privacy list.
3. Click OK in the window that displays “Are you sure you want to prevent
Spotlight from searching in “/“?
4. Wait 10 seconds, and then remove the hard drive from the privacy list (click
the minus(-) button).

Give spotlight some time to re-index your drive before testing it out.
The magnifying glass in the upper-right of your screen will pulse during this
time.

This forces Spotlight to Re-Index your Hard Drive.
Post back your results please.

Cheers,

It's access to the Rosetta frameworks in current versions of Mac OS X that
makes this possible, and it's the support for Rosetta which is disappearing in
Lion, and consequently the support for such legacy software. Anything marked
"Intel" or "Universal" will continue to work in Lion, since those items do not
require Rosetta.

Rosetta is a technology which creates a link between the Intel processor in
your modern Mac and the PowerPC code in your older apps, which by themselves
are incompatible with Intel processors, just as Intel-only apps are
incompatible with PowerPC processors such the G4 and G5. Universal apps contain
both Intel code and PowerPC code, allowing them to run in either environment.
There is no corresponding bridging software which allows an Intel-only app to
run on a PowerPC processor.

With the release of Lion, Apple are putting the final nail in the coffin of the
PowerPC Mac.

Thanks for your reply Peter.

Spotlight Search Problem

2011-06-12 Thread Rick Armstrong

Hi Rhonda,
As you had mentioned from earlier email search problem, correctly,
that Spotlight may nave some corruption.
I have tried to rebuild unsucessfully, can you talk me through again.
When I go into Terminal and type: sudo mdutil -E /
After I have done this it shows (after a few seconds): Error, no
index found for volume.
(PS Spotlight was slow to find anything at all previously and now has
trouble search anything )

Thanks Rick,
Version 10.4.11 on G4 (long overdue for the big jump to an iMac 27")

Intriguing. The interesting thing is that I would have thought that the
appearance and/or behaviour of the scrollbar would be a MacOS X thing, not
something that could be overwritten with Javascript or CSS. I must admit that
Modernizr has piqued my interest...

Re: Dragon dictate

2011-06-12 Thread Justin Davies
Hi all, a quick update on this

I complained to nuance about their support, and they relented and provided
assistance. I found eventually after plenty of backwards and forwards that
getting the volume on the microphone right in system preferences made a
difference and I'm now getting good results again.

A tip - if you ever want to cut the queue and get something resolved, go
straight to twitter.

I looked at other products on the market - at that stage ibm's via voice,
dragon and macdictate. via voice had ok reviews but macdictate was the one
specifically for mac, so it was the logical choice - and had best reviews. In
other words, I don't think you have a lot of options

Best regards

Justin Davies

Re: Ping

2011-06-12 Thread Ronda Brown
Ping is Apple’s music social network that lives inside of iTunes—it’s all about
music discovery. Like Twitter, you can follow and be followed—your friends to
see what they’re listening to, or artists like Lady Gaga.

It’s totally optional, and only as public as you want—you can post about
whatever you want. And you can comment on posts, much like Facebook.

Hi Stuart,

Grappa is certainly bracing. I like the Italian expression for when it is added
to espresso -- caffè corretto meaning corrected coffee, as though it's a
mistake to have the coffee without it. :-) I haven't had grappa for quite some

their acquisition by Dragon and a change to the dragon engine, the
product has become virtually unusable. Poor word recognition,
crashes before you can complete a full page of text and
progressively slows your computer down. The latest free upgrade has
really destroyed it, and there is a great deal of unanswered grief
on the dragon forums.

It is now much more difficult to lodge a support request - and here
is the response you get when you do - pay us to help you with our
poor product.

Whilst I understand that businesses need to make a dollar, and
providing unlimited free support isn't practical, those businesses
that don't care about their customers will in time perish.

This is a pity as speech recognition has the potential to provide
productivity improvements, and also to help those with disabilities
enjoy a more full life.

Re: iPhone/GPS

2011-06-12 Thread cm

Hi Stuart,

That is almost what I was trying to say, perhaps not clearly enough. The Maps
application works by finding your location using the GPS (or failing that a
cell tower signal or a Wi-Fi signal) and the then downloads the map to display
you current location on the map. The problem is when you are out of 3G range,
you can still get your location via the GPS, but the Maps application cannot
download the map to show you where that location is "on the map".

The work around is to download the maps into the Map application before you
leave the 3G coverage area. You can do this in Maps or by using some of the
other applications that other members have recommended -- (some of which look
excellent with an eye to getting one for myself -- thanks for the suggestions
to those involved).

Tom Tom on the other hand, has the maps stored internally included in the
purchase price. So to show your position on a map in Tom Tom, all you need is
the GPS location (or fix as it is known). Tom Tom will then fetch one of its
internal maps and show you your location on the map.

Hope this is clearer.

Cheers,
Carlo

PS: There are still rumours that Apple will revamp its mapping app even though
it was not mentioned at the WWDC keynote.

I've found renting movies hit and miss, sometimes works almost straight away
and other times takes hours to download and once didn't receive anything at all
 but was charged.

If you log into your ITunes account and go to purchase history you'll see a "report
a problem" button press on this to send an email with the problem your having,
they'll get back to you in one to two days and probably refund the money within 7 days.

I'm starting to think it's easier to rent from a video shop

Thanks for the info Ronda,
I presumed it was my internet speed, mine is reliably 2.5-3Mbps but not
fast enough obviously for HD content.

With my connection speed, renting from Apple needs to be planned ahead
and that combined with their way of "testing" your cc account with an
additional $3.99 charge and Sony's recent hacker troubles has seen me go
back to the video shop.

Make sure you get the correct firmware for your generation D-Link DSL-504T
Modem.
You don’t mention what revision your Modem is … Revision A or Revision C

Re: Apple TV

2011-06-12 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Peter & Chris,

10 Mbs connection speed seems to be a requirement for Rental Movies.

"For the best viewing experience when renting iTunes movies and TV shows on
Apple TV (2nd generation), you need a broadband Internet connection. A
sustained 6 Mbit/s or faster Internet connection is recommended for viewing
High Definition movies and TV shows, and a sustained 2.5 Mbit/s or faster
Internet connection is recommended for Standard Definition content. Internet
connection speeds may vary depending on your ISP and other factors.”

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: How to Download Photos from samsung galaxy

2011-06-12 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Blitto,

Are you using OS X 10.6.7?

If you cannot see the memory card of the phone on the Mac, how are you sending
photos from the computer to the phone?

Is it by bluetooth? If so, you can use the same technique to send photos (or
any file) on the phone back to the Mac.

If you are usng Bluetooth, you would already have paired the phone to the Mac.
Then, in the Bluetooth menu on the Mac, look for the phone in the menu and
select "Browse" from that Bluetooth menu.

On Snow Leopard, it says "Browse Samsung..” You will then get the Mac's
Bluetooth File Browser open which lets you navigate the phone memory looking
for the right folder.
The phone puts camera files in the "DCIM" folder to match the standards used by
typical digital cameras.
You will see your photos and you can drag/drop them back to the Mac.

But, on the phone, you need to first open the "My Files" program, navigate to
the DCIM folder, then press the Settings button on the phone. Press the "More"
button to see more options and select Bluetooth Visibility. You now
enable/disable visibility for the photos.
The onces which are visible are the only ones which will be shown to the Mac's
Bluetooth File Browser.

It may sound cumbersome, but this is a security feature to stop devices that
are legitimately paired to your phone having access to data which you would
still rather keep private…!

If you find you are still unable to connect try:
Go to settings->applications->development-> turn on debugging mode.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Modem recommendations ?

2011-06-12 Thread Severin Crisp
Neil, I can not put a time to when this started happening, it was way
back and never very frequent, average perhaps every two months at
most. It has never happened when I am working, only when I am away
and the computer is or is not asleep. I have always thought of power
glitches or some glitch at Westnet. It has never been an issue to
worry me.

I am with Internode but they don’t have their own gear in the Albany

guess it is the same for you with Westnet?

So, have you noticed an increase in freeze-ups over the last year or
so?

Doesn't seem to matter if I use Mail or Outlook 2011.
