Re: Adieu
So I have been reading these messages trying to form an opinion and thought I should post while I am still able. I must admit though, comments like this (Stephens) are unhelpful - just my opinion though. Can I ask, as I can't find them on the WAMUG website, does WAMUG publish its accounts. This would help with your argument about the cost of running WAMUG and where the money goes etc. Anyway just a thought. There is a lot of cost involved in running the list, hosting, and other costs. Let alone the time and resources that the Committee put in behind the scenes. (of which they receive no monetary reward, it's all their time and resources put in for free). There is no real advertising on this list. (Have you been to some of the other lists that have advertising everywhere?). Plus you only have to look around at other support costs. Apple charge $99 per incident outside of Applecare warranty. (or the free 90 day phone support). Go to a Genius bar? You'd probably spend $30 on petrol/travelling costs/your time/parking costs! lol Other places charge $20-$75 for phone/email support. (myself included I have a fee for email support/consulting. As does Ronni for her offlist support). Which is fair enough if places want to charge. As someone else said it's a user-paid world we live in today. Lawyers, Accountants etc all charge. People have to make a living. So compared to the single support cost, this yearly membership is well worth it. And lastly, from the survey that was done, most people were happy to pay a fee and comments were that the list should/could be paid. That was a survey completed by the members, and the committee spent a long period of time discussing it. (let alone getting it all place). I could go on, but I think they are the main points I wanted to make. Running the list has a very real cost, both financial and in the time of contributors, fairness dictates that those who pay the membership fee are entitled to use the service above other persons who join, post a random question or put up for sale a piece of equipment, and then disappear. Sadly neither of you, Peter and Eugene, are anywhere near to this category of user so I have two solutions to suggest. Firstly remember that the WAMUG membership fee is less than a reasonable call-out charge for most Mac consultants. The second solution I would like to offer is that at the next committee meeting we will discuss some bursaries for members who really

So can someone please confirm that the configuration of SMTP servers on the iPhone does, in fact behave as Apple says it should viz: if a 'primary' server is unavailable the phone will try the additional outgoing servers in turn (hopefully, until it has success)? Can anyone confirm that my experience with sending email on the 3G network is more general than mine, alone? My iPhone contract is with Telstra but my current ISP is People Telecom. Therefore I have the need to specify two outgoing mail servers: mail.bigpond.com for the 3G network and smtp.per.people.net.au for WiFi connections. Under Settingsmail etcaccountsoutgoing mail server it is necessary to set a Primary Server (smtp.people in my case) and 'Other SMTP Servers' (mail.bigpond) and there it states that: If Mail is unsuccessful using the primary server, it will try the other SMTP servers in succession. However my experience is that with the Primary Server toggled 'ON', using a 3G connection, Mail will try to send an email and, after some delay fail with the message: 'The server rejected one of the recipient's addresses (sic). The message has been placed in the Outbox' If the Primary Server is toggled 'OFF' in this configuration the message is sent but not as quickly as with a WiFi connection where the Primary Server is toggled 'ON' It appears as if contact with the Primary Server is still attempted before the Secondary SMTP server is used. (so does OFF not really mean OFF?) I have set up an account with bigpond as the Primary and the same situation is seen in reverse ie: under WiFi if bigpond is toggled OFF an email is sent after a delay but not at all if bigpond is toggled ON. Having to manually configure the primary SMTP server's state whenever the network connection is changed is seemingly contradictory to what the Settings note about 'Other SMTP Servers' implies. I had hoped that the upgrade to iPhone 3.0 would resolve the problem but it hasn't. Nor has restoring everything 'as a new phone' (ie without any previous settings) made any difference. I have spent a fair bit of time talking to Telstra and Apple and, in fact it was only in the past few days that I worked out the above solution and was able to send emails using 3G connections although I'm sure there wasn't this difficulty when I first set up the phone's email. I want (need?) to send very few emails using a 3G connection but this is, nevertheless, pretty frustrating :( At no stage has there been any difficulty receiving email or connecting to the net on either 3G or WiFi connections peter meyer 0408 902349 pmo...@people.net.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

No currently I have a single image for all PowerPC Macs (G5/G4/G3) both desktop and laptops. I also have to have an image for my Intel Macs as well. 10.5 is a universal operating system (or so I believe) and therefore I would only need the one image for all, well that's the theory. RE: podcast
Paul is quite right about the location but just want those people who don't know a podcast is Podcasting is the distribution of audio or video files, such as radio programs or music videos, over the internet using either RSS or Atom syndication for listening on mobile devices and personal computers. A podcast is a web feed of audio or video files placed on the Internet for anyone to subscribe to, and also the content of that feed. Podcasters' websites also may offer direct download of their files, but the subscription feed of automatically delivered new content is what distinguishes a podcast from a simple download or real-time streaming (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcast) So basically it is a feed you subscribe to rather than manually download one file at a time. RE: connecting to curtin network
Not at the moment but moves are afoot to change this is the near future as I understand it. As a mac user at Curtin I am looking forward to this too. I am sure someone on this list will advise when things change. Runs quite happily on LAN at her house with other (windows) laptops and pcs. She was told she can' t connect to the wireless network in the library at Curtin because they don't support macs Is this true? If so, I obviously gave her the wrong advice about a notebook of choice! If not how does she connect to the network? (step-by-step) She finds this a very great disadvantage in doing her study. 10.3.8 Update and Customised Login Screen
We have found that if you have customised the login screen and you update to 10.3.8 using either combo update or the delta update that you loose that custom window and get the default one back. I am sure this does not affect all of you but thought I would warn anyway. Here at Curtin with out legal screen being that one it is a problem. The 1234 number is replacing the Telstra 12456 directory assistance number, but this time with outrageous costs attached: 40c to call the number, then 4c A SECOND! With this sort of pricing structure in place, it's no wonder so many Australians hold Telstra in the same regard as the major banks. By law, Telstra have to provide a FREE directory assistance number, because they are still majority owned by the government. They choose however not to pass this number on to the public. What's the number? 1223. Thumbs down to Telstra for finding a way to charge for a service that is supposed to be provided for free. Of course, feel free to forward this on. RE: Copying files from Mac to Win2K server
One extra sneaky little thing to watch is making sure you do not have a space at the end of the file name. Does not stop it copying but will not let you open it (or rename it) on Windows. I know this is not strictly the problem but thought I would add it to the knowledge base anyway. Duncan -- Duncan Hardman IT Systems Administrator School of Physiotherapy / Department of Podiatry -Original Message- From: Oldham, Toby [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, 6 May 2004 1:04 PM Heya people, Anyone know how I can copy 12+ gig of data from a 10.3 mac to a Win2k server over a network, without getting hampered by error messages stating certain invisible files can't be copied because they have filenames Windows doesn't like? I thought I had the copying problem sorted (bought a copy of better finder rename to quickly replace all the 'evil' mac forward and back slashes that freaks out the Windows OS) ... but no - copy _denied_. I don't feel like altering the invisible file names ... I checked Apple's support pages, MacWindows website and did a quick google, nothing sprang out. I'm considering formatting an external HD as a Win2k disk and copying the stuff across (assuming it's a network copying issue). I considered copying the files to VPC then copying on to the Win2k server but the G5 I'm on won't run VPC. Sheesh, tell me I don't need to buy a copy of Dave or Timbuktu. Any thoughts gratefully appreciated, Tobes.

I had this problem when it was one of these disk that was left open so the PC user could add more data by just dragging onto the icon. I had to close the disk but still had a few problems. To ensure you can read a CDRW disk, you need a CDRW drive, although quite a few modern CD or DVD drives are probably able to read them.
