Re: Adieu

So I have been reading these messages trying to form an opinion and
thought I should post while I am still able. I must admit though,
comments like this (Stephens) are unhelpful - just my opinion though.

Can I ask, as I can't find them on the WAMUG website, does WAMUG
publish its accounts. This would help with your argument about the
cost of running WAMUG and where the money goes etc.

Anyway just a thought.

Hi Peter and Eugene and other list members,

We list followers are really grateful for your contributions over the
years and we contributors are honoured to have been able to help you out
on other occasions. I just wanted to let you know that there is no need at
all to end your connection with WAMUG. You will still be able to read any
and all posts to the list, and you will still continue to receive WAMUG
emails to your inbox unless you choose to stop them. Also if you ever
happen to be passing through Perth, meetings are open to all and we would
 love to see you there.

The decision to allow posting to only members was not made lightly.
Running the list has a very real cost, both financial and in the time of
contributors, fairness dictates that those who pay the membership fee are
entitled to use the service above other persons who join, post a random
question or put up for sale a piece of equipment, and then disappear.
Sadly neither of you, Peter and Eugene, are anywhere near to this category
of user so I have two solutions to suggest. Firstly remember that the
WAMUG membership fee is less than a reasonable call-out charge for most
Mac consultants. So if at some future time you need a consultant, consider
joining our list and with luck we w

TomTom is great but if you hardly ever use it you could try one of the
following (both turn by turn like TomTom)

Navfree GPS

This is free and is pretty good.

Sygic Australia & New Zealand

This one is $34.99 and is great. Use it on a regular basis. I use it
in a windscreen cradle but my wife just listens to the instructions
from the iPhone speaker.

Hope this helps.

I am disembarking the ship in Geelong and plan to hire a car to see a

My new 4S has been good on board for the time and early morning alarm.

However, I would like to know if I will be able to use the iphone in my
hire car to get me down the Portland, and after 2 days, direct me back to
Melbourne airport (which I have never driven to before in my life)!??? I
cant use it on board as we are way out of telstra phone range!!

If so that would be great as I need not book a GPS for the car at about
 $15/day extra!!

Kind regards to all and thanks for any advice

To give you an idea of cost... less than 3 mins in the UK whilst
roaming cost $25 (run as a test for work). Best bet is either, as
others have suggested, get a local SIM in the country you are

other options there might be.

Re: Outgoing servers in iPhone Mail

take a while to send but does go.

Sent from my iPhone

On 21/06/2009, at 11:06 AM, Peter Meyer wrote:

I probably asked my question the wrong way around when I first
posted it.
So can someone please confirm that the configuration of SMTP servers
on the iPhone does, in fact behave as Apple says it should viz: if a
'primary' server is unavailable the phone will try the additional
outgoing servers in turn (hopefully, until it has success)?

Can anyone confirm that my experience with sending email on the 3G
network is more general than mine, alone?

My iPhone contract is with Telstra but my current ISP is People
Telecom. Therefore I have the need to specify two outgoing mail
servers: mail.bigpond.com for the 3G network and
smtp.per.people.net.au for WiFi connections. Under Settings>mail
etc>accounts>outgoing mail server it is necessary to set a Primary
Server (smtp.people in my case) and 'Other SMTP
Servers' (mail.bigpond) and there it states that:

"If Mail is unsuccessful using the primary server, it will try the
other SMTP servers in succession."

However my experience is that with the Primary Server toggled
'ON', using a 3G connection, Mail will try to send an email and,
after some delay fail with the message: 'The server rejected one of
the recipient's addresses (sic). The message has been placed in the
Outbox' If the Primary Server is toggled 'OFF' in this
configuration the message is sent but not as quickly as with a WiFi
connection where the Primary Server is toggled 'ON' It appears as
if contact with the Primary Server is still attempted before the
Secondary SMTP server is used. (so does OFF not really mean OFF?)
I have set up an account with bigpond as the Primary and the same
situation is seen in reverse ie: under WiFi if bigpond is toggled
OFF an email is sent after a delay but not at all if bigpond is
toggled ON.

Having to manually configure the primary SMTP server's state
whenever the network connection is changed is seemingly
contradictory to what the Settings note about 'Other SMTP Servers'
implies.

I had hoped that the upgrade to iPhone 3.0 would resolve the
problem but it hasn't. Nor has restoring everything 'as a new
phone' (ie without any previous settings) made any difference.
I have spent a fair bit of time talking to Telstra and Apple and,
in fact it was only in the past few days that I worked out the
above solution and was able to send emails using 3G connections
although I'm sure there wasn't this difficulty when I first set up
the phone's email. I want (need?) to send very few emails using a
3G connection but this is, nevertheless, pretty frustrating :(

At no stage has there been any difficulty receiving email or
connecting to the net on either 3G or WiFi connections

Re: DROBO - Storage Robot

2008-12-20 Thread Duncan Hardman
No problem with updating the firmware but the firmware out of the box
gave us issues with all red warning lights coming on all the drives
and therefore no data or protection. Once we had updated the firmware
for both the drobo and the drobo share we have had no problems at all
and love it too :)

Hope this clears it up

Cheers

What issues did you experience?
Was it to do with your Firewall blocking the web-based firmware

Or did it fail to install?

Drobo is designed to actively monitor and protect your data at all
times. It is also programmed to optimise data storage so you don't
have to.
Drobo acts as a large, single pool of storage that is always
available and it's also inherently "backed-up" on the Drobo and
protected against drive failure or disk corruption. He is One Big
Pool of Protected Storage.

Drobo has Four (4) Data Bays. He will only take 3.5" SATA1 &
SATA11 Drives NOT IDE drives.

You must have at least two drives in Drobo.
I now have in DROBO three drives. 1TB SATA + 1TB SATA + 250GB
SATA Drives, giving me 2.25TB (2.04TB Actual). 934.96GB is being
used for Protection.
When I only had 1TB + 250GB, DROBO gave me the "RED ALERT that I
must insert a new drive into the empty Data Bay indicated by the
red light".

Drobo needed extra space for protection of my data.

You can use Drobolator Capacity Calculator to help you select the
number and size of drives to fit your needs <http://www.drobo.com/Products/drobolator.html

You can just add new disks when you need more capacity, or replace
a smaller drive with a larger one, no data migration or
reconfiguration is required.

Your data has multiple layers of automatic protection.

Drobo works with Time Machine, SuperDuper, and other backup
software and utilities. It works perfectly with Déjà Vu (the
backup I use).

You can Network Drobo. This explains Networking Drobo:

as that 28.8Kbps modem in the back of your closet."

This latest release "Second Generation" has 2 Firewire 800 ports &
1 USB 2.0 port.

The First generation was only USB 2.0.

"Now, it's also fast. Drobo is available with FireWire 800 and

Re: Leopard delayed

2007-04-14 Thread Duncan Hardman

No currently I have a single image for all PowerPC Macs (G5/G4/G3)
both desktop and laptops. I also have to have an image for my Intel
Macs as well.

10.5 is a "universal" operating system (or so I believe) and therefore
I would only need the one image for all, well that's the theory.

I am thinking about having separate images for laptops and desktop if
I find the needs are different.

Well in fact there is no "need" to have separate images as such. With

Careful !

The front page lists Microsoft Office 2003 ... that's about 3 years old
and new versions available !
Of course it would be cheap !

Also , when looking at those offers, remember they are probably PC

Of course IF you have the very latest Mac and you want to run PC
software
that would be possible to arrange , at a cost .

Dear Mac

I hope that 'mailr.westnet.com.au' is a typo as it should read
mail.westnet.com.au

You do not say whether you have been in contact with Westnet about this?

You also say 'authentification 'password' ', if this is refering to the
'Outgoing Mail Server Settings - Authentication', I believe this should
be set to 'None' as mine always is. No password is used for outgoing
emails.
In mine, for the *Incoming* settings (under Prefs - Accounts - Advanced
in Mail.app) the SSL port is 995 and this is turned (ticked) on and the
'Authentication' is of course set to 'Password', for to recieve email
you must authenticate.

I hoop this helps, hayte to think you have to mess aboot like this on ya
hols AYE?
Good luck feller ;-)

RE: podcast

2006-02-21 Thread Duncan Hardman
Paul is quite right about the location but just want those people who
don't know a podcast is

Podcasting is the distribution of audio or video files, such as radio
programs or music videos, over the internet using either RSS or Atom
syndication for listening on mobile devices and personal computers. A
podcast is a web feed of audio or video files placed on the Internet for
anyone to subscribe to, and also the content of that feed. Podcasters'
websites also may offer direct download of their files, but the
subscription feed of automatically delivered new content is what
distinguishes a podcast from a simple download or real-time streaming
(Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcast)

So basically it is a feed you subscribe to rather than manually download
one file at a time.

Yes, Podcast is just a fancy way of saying "recorded radio program

Podcasts gotten from ITMS live in your iTunes Library.
Ones you get via a browser etc should be in your download
folder/location.

Perhaps someone has an idea for this. My dad has a shiny new iMac (PPC
of course), but unfortunately he ignored my advise and went with Telstra
as a ADSL provider, and so he has a measly 200MG/month limit.
Software Updates probably exceed that each month all by themselves!

I can download and keep packages on my Mac, burn a CD and sneaker-net it
to his house to install, but since it isn't an identical Mac, who knows
if they are the same packages. What I want is a way to find out from
Software Update on his Mac, what it wants to download, so I could
download it here and than install it there.

Any ideas if this is possible?

Thanks,
Peter.

You can also try booting holding down the "option" key. This will list all

so a difference of about 89 MB - where might this be?

ought I erase the drive with disk utility or is the some thing else that

If not how does she connect to the network? (step-by-step) She finds this

RE: Copying files from Mac to Win2K server

2004-05-06 Thread Duncan Hardman
One extra sneaky little thing to watch is making sure you do not have a
space at the end of the file name. Does not stop it copying but will not let
you open it (or rename it) on Windows. I know this is not strictly the
problem but thought I would add it to the knowledge base anyway.

Heya people,

Anyone know how I can copy 12+ gig of data from a 10.3 mac to a Win2k server
over a network, without getting hampered by error messages stating certain
invisible files can't be copied because they have filenames Windows doesn't
like?

I thought I had the copying problem sorted (bought a copy of better finder
rename to quickly replace all the 'evil' mac forward and back slashes that
freaks out the Windows OS) ... but no - copy _denied_. I don't feel like
altering the invisible file names ...

I checked Apple's support pages, MacWindows website and did a quick google,
nothing sprang out. I'm considering formatting an external HD as a Win2k
disk and copying the stuff across (assuming it's a network copying issue). I
considered copying the files to VPC then copying on to the Win2k server but
the G5 I'm on won't run VPC. Sheesh, tell me I don't need to buy a copy of
Dave or Timbuktu.

Any thoughts gratefully appreciated,

Tobes.

As far as I know this is a Telstra Bigpond issue. There was a utility fix
for this eons ago but the later releases of Mail were supposed to have
addressed this problem.

However, it seems to have resurfaced and is so annoying I've diverted my
Telstra mail to our zytech mailserver so Mail doesn't check the Bigpond
server at all (which I know won't solve your problem).

To ensure you can read a CDRW disk, you need a CDRW drive, although
quite a few modern CD or DVD drives are probably able to read them.

Not bad considering the Mac's minuscule market share... Shows that not
