Re: The Incredibles
I was in Big W the other day and saw a Disney computer game for The Incredibles It has the label Built for Mac OS X 10.2 So I parted with $38.93. Brought it home and tried to install it on one of the Macs running with OS X 10.3.9. Guess what? Its installer doesn't want to run. That's incredible. I did manage to get the program to run by clicking its Icon in MacResources, but it's buggy. Any polite suggestions would be appreciated. Best wishes, Paul. -- Dr Paul R. Weaver http://www.livejournal.com/users/fremantlebiz/2004/ Perhaps you should have bought The Credibles :-)

Panorama downloading
G'day all Anybody having difficulty in downloading Panorama should note the following information from Jim Rea in relation to a problem raised by potential user Cheers John I've downloaded the sitx file twice now... but each time, it decompresses to within 5 seconds of completion... then sits there. Just let it sit. Eventually it will complete - it may take a few minutes (one customer reported over 20 minutes). Another option is to use Stuffit Expander 8 if you can get your hands on it. It will unstuff it right away. Jim Rea Jim Rea is to Panorama what Bill Gates is to Microsoft Wind the big difference is Jim actually wrote and continues to enhance the program http://www.provue.com/panoramatestdrive.html
Re: Database on OS X
Dear WAMUG'ers, For those interested in databases for the Mac platform I suggest a quick look at this interesting article: http://db.tidbits.com/getbits.acgi?tbart=08018 If the author's name was not given I would have sworn that it was written by our very own John C! Regards, Philippe For those on the list who don't know who Philippe is referring to, I am the John C nutter who happens to believe that Panorama is a more versatile data base than FMP for many if not most purposes . If you need a multi user data base or one which can readily be searchable on the Web you may have to wait until June. There are ways and means of doing both these things with the current version however they have relied on third party software which has been sold and allowed to wither on the vine. Jim Rae proprietor and program writer has been working on the OS X version of Panorama which was launched last year. Concurrently he has been working on the enterprise edition which will build into Panorama multi user and interactive web facilities. The beta version exists and is being tested by the gurus. Jim has promised its launch June or July this year. Panorama being RAM based is blazingly fast. Unlike FMP and other disk writing data bases it does not assemble its reports by retrieving data from the disk on the basis of indexed fields. eg I have a data base of some 40,000 records of descriptions of photographs and other details held at the Aviation Heritage Museum . I can search and find all the records which begin with, end with, contain , equal etc. etc. in 50 fields (none of which are burdened with indexes) in a split second with scanned images if required. How much space does this file occupy? 5.3 mbs. Having found the information I want I can display or print it in pre designed forms (list or card) or if I wanted a one off presentation I could design and print a form on the fly which may be discarded by not saving the data base when I close. The background to the Tidbits article is a review of Panorama V which appears in the April ? issue of US MacWorld The reviewer one William Porter is apparently a long time FMP developer who has a number of books on FMP to his credit. This was not revealed by MacWorld and has not unnaturally called into question the motives behind the faint praise and flawed review. My one great regret as a member of WAMUG is that I have not persuaded a single member to give Panorama a go. I assure you that is my fault not Panorama's. Like Apple and Microsoft it is a David and Goliath situation unfortunately in this case Apple is the Goliath . PROVUE is along with Microsoft the only surviving software company from the inception of Macintosh . Check it out at http://www.provue.com/ Cheers John

HP Laserjet 2500 Disk
G'Day all At the Aviation Museum we have an HP LaserJet 2500 Printer I do not recommend it . My present problem is however to replace the Master CD disk which has been lost stolen or misplaced. Re: Anybody with an iPod ?
Methodshop, which offers iPod tech support and repairs, cites several stories in its warning about a surprisingly common iPod toilet trap: Wow, the toilet dropping appears to be a common problem! I hope the toilet was full of clean water. Always wait until the iPod is completely dry before plugging it in, or using it. Water and electricty don't mix. It might work fine after it dries out. Cross your fingers. If you are having issues like the Folder icon or Sad Face, you should probably try to erase and restore it. That might work if the hard drive just got a little whacked. However, you may need to replace a few parts inside depending on what exactly happened. Sounds like a great business opportunity, producing a new accessory iPod water wings
Trojan Horse
This story in TidBits didn't get much of a mention on the list Was it an April Fools joke John Although 1999 seems an eternity ago, some things never change, and today the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it would be standardizing all of its computing functions on Macs running Mac OS X. As with the Army's decision back in 1999, the reason is security. Even though Microsoft continues to block holes in Windows, we've seen an ever-increasing number of worm and virus epidemics that have turned millions of Windows-based PCs into zombie spam generators and resulted in many billions of dollars of damage and cleanup costs. Therein lies the difference since 1999. Although DHS remains concerned about the security of its internal and external Web sites, the real worry today is that the entire department could be crippled by a virulent Windows worm or virus. The Army was merely embarrassed by their Web site being modified, but a worm- based attack on DHS computers could seriously compromise the agency's ability to respond to a terrorist attack. DHS has been particularly concerned about such attacks, issuing an alert in March about a Windows program called Phatbot that brings peer- to-peer networking concepts to malicious software. Needless to say, the announcement is good news for Apple Computer, since it will entail the purchase of hundreds of thousands of Macintosh systems. Apple stock rose $4.01 on the announcement as Wall Street took account of the future earnings. It's important to remain realistic about the effects of DHS switching to Mac OS X. In the past, Macs have been largely free of worms and viruses at least in part because Macs weren't generally used in interesting places (interesting, that is, to the sort of people who write malicious software). Targets don't get much more prominent than DHS, and I fully expect to see more hacking effort aimed against Macs in the near future. Apple is not unaware of this possibility either, and has already started advertising for additional security engineers, as evidenced by the job posting below (Apple ID required for login).

I've even seen one journalist refer to Apple's Proprietary file format. Proprietary?? AAC is part of the MPEG4 standard. With which particular non-proprietary standard does WMP comply? What's wrong with just using MP3? WMP recognises it, and it actually works on MP3 players! All of them! And we wouldn't be stuffing around with all this platform rubbish. Who would have thought that the old platform wars would be resurrected in the online music scene. Music files have historically been among the most platform-agnostic around, and here we have all sorts of companies (it's not just Telstra) doing their utmost to make sure their fare will not work on the iPod. Being a tin ear i don't understand all this, however,. Does this mean that HP have bought themselves a Lemon ipod not an Apple iPod ? It would not seem to be in Telestra's commercial interest to act this way. As we still own 51% perhaps it's a matter which should be drawn to the Ministers attention ? Requires considerably less space than FileMaker or any other data base for that matter.Cross platform , the only change you need to make is add the extension .pan to your files .I am currently running a 35,000 photographic catalog application at the Air Force Museum at Bullcreek with 50 fields takes up 5 Mb Search and select on any field takes moments.Displays jpeg images as thumbnails or any size you choose. OS-x tip
OS-X tip from my Panorama list Sorry if its already well known One last nugget I would like to mention that you can find in OS X that may have escaped some. If you go to the System Preferences and International panel and click the Input Menu tab, there is a checkbox next to the Character Palette item. If you click this on, you will have an icon now in the menu bar just to the right of Help which will give you access to this really great utility. The Character Palette is where you can view and select all the font characters available in all your fonts including the unicode items and a whole bunch of special symbols. You can view all the available symbols for instance and click on the one you need. Then click the little down arrow at the bottom and a panel drops down with a font selector. Now if you click the box to show only fonts containing selected character, the font menu will only contain fonts with this symbol. Once you find the character and font you want, you can click the Insert button to drop it into the current application document. How to get there under OS-X 10.24 Go to International Preferences, click on Inpu Tab, slide blue scroll capsule to the top of the scroll bar, find Character Pallette at top of list of of languages, click check box at left, see icon appear in menu bar at top of screen, experiment with it, enjoy.

SAFARI PROBLEM
Copy of email received this morning off my Panorama QA lis Subject: Be Careful!!! Several MacInTouch readers pointed out an Apple online discussion - Danger! Danger! Danger! - warning that Option-clicking a link in Safari has the potential to wipe out the user's home directory in Mac OS X: I option clicked on a link in Safari to test a download. The download changed to the name of my home directory as it was downloading. It saved into my User folder. In the blink of an eye, it removed, destroyed, evaporated, my entire Home directory, including the desktop which disappeared along with days of work projects that were on it! Safari itself disappeared because it was on the desktop. My multi-gig directory was suddenly only 32 k. Of course, all of my work files, financial records, etc. are in my Home directory; by some quirk of fate, I had just backed up work files other than those on the desktop to another drive. Yikes!!! Maybe we should wait for others to beta test this!!!

Macs for Timor
G'Day WAMUGGERS Mr Tony Trilling of the Booragoon Lions Club has been in touch regarding some 10 or so Macs that have been donated for despatch to Timor. They need checking out to see that they are functioning and have at least Claris works on so the kids can do word processing. If you can help let me know . Probably the best way would be to pick up one or two machines ( they are in the Melville area) and check them out at home. Alternatively I could possibly deliver to South of the river addresses . Please let me know by email ASAP John jmcurrie @highway1.com.au

We spoke about this hoax in December, and here's a follow-up: Just heard on NPR that authorities have arrested 6 guys in Africa responsible for this scheme. About 2600 Americans fell victim to it. Does anybody have the Australian statistics on this I would like to compile a gullibilty index:-)

Re: Humour
on Monday April 22 Onno Benschop wrote after selectively quoting from my off list message Humour is a funny thing. Everyones funny bone is in a different spot. A trite cliche, totally unscientific and if it were true what a sad old world with nobody being able to share a joke with anybody. What Onno is trying to say is that not everybody shares his sense of humour , very few it seems. Stick to the facts Onno. Sincerely you are really very good at that onjay urriekay ..pig latin for John Currie
Re: Cataloguing issues
Onno wrote The best part is the licencing of a CD to distribute - *not*. AFAIK Filemaker standalone executables made with the developers tools don't need to be licenced. Shay Panorama has a basic fee of $ US 250 plus add on costs depending on size of the data base in terms of the number of forms (reports) and procedures (macros). For the case under discussion, at the outside another $US 50. For this you can make an unlimited number of copies with the freedom to change the images and the captions or any other data at any time John

At 12:20 +0800 05/04/2002, Shay Telfer wrote: Also, you can't put a PHP/SQL database onto a CD to distribute it to multiple users on multiple platforms if you ever decide to do so. FileMaker does this relatively painlessly. Then again, distributing CDs is such a dark ages model :-) It's easy to slap a database up on a web server, then it's always up to date. I think Jim Cummins is looking for a more static catalogue of anatomical images. Something which students could look at without having to get on the Web I have, of course, offered him a Panorama solution.tailored exactly to his requirements, inexpensive, and faster. However if you want to see Panorama used for images on the web check out http://www.hindsightltd.com/products/searchLynx.html try the links Demo and Customer databases at the bottom of the page John
re 10 gig iPod
G'Day Wamuggers Check out http://www.provue.com/ipodorganizer.html You can enter and edit the data in the Panorama iPod Organizer software itself or import data from your favorite database or contact manager software. Information can be organized into as many custom categories as you like: Contacts, Appointments, Travel, etc. Each category appears as an entry in the Artists menu on the iPod. The Panorama iPod Organizer requires no special software on your iPod. To transfer the data to your iPod the software exports the data as MP3 files compatible with iTunes. The next time you sync your iPod all of your contact information will be automatically transferred to the iPod. The organizer information is extremely compact -- in fact, 1,000 contacts will use less than 0.1% of the space on your iPod. Anyone with an iPod can use the Panorama iPod Organizer. But if you are also a Panorama owner you get an extra bonus you can convert any Panorama database into a source for iPod data! The possibilities are endless -- use your iPod to display parts catalogs, check lists, company directories, production schedules, anything you can fit on the iPod screen! The Panorama iPod Organizer is available now for an introductory price of only $19.95! Comment by Tid Bits after January MacWorld demonstration of above Most Brilliantly Sneaky Hack - Jim Rea of ProVUE was demonstrating the Panorama iPod Organizer, which lets you use your iPod as a sort of lightweight read-only PDA. It exports a Panorama database as MP3 files. These contain no music; what's important is their names and ID3 tag information. The result is that after you sync your iPod, your database entries show up organized hierarchically within the Artists folder (e.g. Artists - Family - Sister, and within that are the actual music files whose names are my sister's phone number and address). For $20, it's a cheap way to look cool and reduce the number of digital devices you carry.

Problems with IE 5 after upgrade to OS 9.22
This may be relevant From another list to which I subscribe A reason NOT to update: It seems that AppleScript v1.7, which comes with OS 9.2.2 (and OS X), has a problem when running scripts from the internal script menus of applications such as Entourage or Outlook Express under 9.2.2, although they run just fine in OS X. Scripts run very slowly or time out. Paul Berkowitz, who writes many scripts for these applications, reports on an Entourage mailing list that Other things in AppleScripts or applets will break in AppleScript 1.7 running in OS 9.2.2 (but are OK in AppleScript 1.7 in OS 10.1.1) - especially Finder calls and scripts which 'open for access with write permission' to create new files - they are no longer automatically text files, so they can't open or print by the Finder (which might time out anyway) unless you assign them a creator by the Finder (might time out) or just give them a .txt extension - then they're text files. -- Microsoft MVP for Entourage/OE/Word Allen Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] XNS name: =Allen Watson AppleScripts for Outlook Express and Entourage: http://homepage.mac.com/allenwatson/ Don't know if this is the your problem, but it may very well be.
