Thank You!
Many thanks to the WAMUG committee for organising last night’s Zoom meeting for members. For some years I have been unable to drive at night so have missed attending the monthly meetings - since Christ Church days. It was good to put faces to names and to pick up new ideas and tips in my life long journey with Apple. Keep up the great work. Re: WAMUGMeeting Tue June 2
Hello Maureen, I would love to join the Zoom meeting on Tuesday evening - Marlene Oostryck. It’s a great idea as I don’t drive at night so can’t get to the meetings. I have used Zoom once - on Mother’s Day to chat to my scattered family so hope I would be OK for the meeting. I have just checked if I have paid my WAMUG subs and can’t seem to find any record. I was away in Jan and in the mad rush of my return must have overlooked it. Will do a transfer tomorrow and email the receipt - should go in on Tuesday. Hope this is OK. Re: External HD (Time Machine and Drive 2) problems
Hello All, Many thanks for all your suggestions to overcome my HD/Time Machine problems. Your suggestions are all filed and hopefully I won’t have to access them in the future. All is well! Wizard Daniel K has been and magic has happened! My iMac is happy and working well and a new, tiny HD has replaced my old, clunky 4TB drive. Hello Phillipe and Stephen, Thank you for your suggestions. Apologies for my slow response but a busy life had overtaken me! Stephen C - Yes, I do turn my iMac off periodically, but also often just put it to sleep. Turning off/on had no impact on my HD problem. Phillipe C - I didn’t have the confidence to try your suggestion and being so busy and needing access to my computer did not wish to possibly mess things up any more. Re: Apple photo calendars with Project Extensions? Help.
Hello Pat and Tony, Thank you for your suggestions as a replacement for the now discontinued Apple print service - Snapfish and CMYK. I did investigate both in some detail but in the end went with Photobook Australia - namely because of their very helpful “Help desk” in Melbourne and their excellent reviews. Unfortunately they are getting quite a few ex-Apple customers! What a pity we have lost this excellent product from Apple. The software from Photobook Australia is very easy to use and the ordering and delivery was very smooth. Printing is done in Malaysia. I received a bargain bulk price for 8 calendars. The final product was delivered on Friday and is excellent. Thank you for your help. Apple photo calendars with Project Extensions? Help.
Hi All, It has been a tradition for the last 8 years for me to present a beautiful Apple photo calendar to every family member at Xmas - and sometimes photo books for special occasions. All have been superb quality and easy to produce from iPhoto/Photos. In preparation for the 2019 calendar, my iMac has been upgraded to High Sierra (10.13.6) by Daniel Kerr. I have selected and edited over 200 photos and was ready to download the new Project Extensions BUT … on checking reviews it sounds disastrous! Mimeo - extremely bad, program stalls and crashes, take money-no product- hard to get refund, smudged text, clunky to use, high shipping costs, waste of time - Don’t download. Motif and Shutterfly don’t have good feedback either. So - can any members suggest an alternative print service, for photo calendars, compatible with Photos and the same quality and service available - like Apple provided before this disappointing decision. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Re: Scanning negatives and slides
Hi Chris, I have been using the Kaiser Baas Photo Maker Touch for years and have scanned thousands of negatives and slides. It has a small touch screen and saves scans to an SD memory card for easy transfer to Mac or PC. The Touch model has a 9 megapixel camera to capture the scan and you can make colour adjustments using the screen but I prefer to transfer them as is and do my editing on my iMac. It can process 5 negs or 5 slides with each scan to store on your SD card. The machine is very robust and gives excellent results. I purchased mine at Harvey Norman - around $220 at that time. Have fun! Marlene Oostryck On 10/11/2015, at 2:44 PM, Chris Burton wrote: > Hi Bill > > Thanks very much for your suggestion. I had no idea such a unit existed!!! Regards Marlene Oostryck Actually Marlene, if you intend going to Mavericks you might as weil go the extra step and install Yosemite, for the following reasons: 1. Apple have dropped Mavericks from the App Store, so if you haven't already downloaded a copy prior to the release of Yosemite you're going to find it a challenge finding a copy. 2. Apart from a handful of key improvements, the differences between Mavericks and Yosemite are largely cosmetic. Coming from Snow Leopard, your learning curve will be the same either way. 3. As nice as Mavericks was, it still had a few little rough edges that Yosemite has finally polished off. There will be no advantage to you trying to upgrade to Mavericks instead of Yosemite. You will have to make the move at some time. Now is the perfect time. Mail won't send emails
Hello All iMac 10.6.8 SL using gmail on Mail. My husband has Alzheimers but is still able to send emails ( 2 a day on good days!). It keeps him in touch with family in the Netherlands. Hi Ronni I have been double clicking the message in the drafts folder and hitting Send and there is just no response. I must have tried 10 times over the last few days - all no response. I just tried again to get an exact answer for you - and found out what the problem is! Somehow my husband has made the menu bar very small and the little icons above Send, Chat, Attach etc have disappeared and the tiny word Send is right next to the red Close button. (Unfortunately he has no memory of what he did). Instead of Sending - it is Closing and putting the message in the Draft folder - an endless loop. I very carefully sent a test message, and kept away from the Close button and all is operating. Now I just have to find out how to restore the icons and increase the size of the Send, Chat etc so there is greater separation and we should be OK. Thanks for your response. Lunch today! THANK YOU!
Hi WAMUG Committee, Many thanks for organising the fabulous lunch today! Beautiful surroundings, lovely food (far too much) and of course, wonderful company. It was really great to put names to faces and there were some really interesting conversations. As I don't like driving at night, I don't get to many meetings any more so I really appreciated the opportunity to catch up with old and new Muggers! Re: Unable to buy iPhoto photobook
Hi Ronni Success at last! I only managed to get back to my iPhoto book at midnight last night - when an update arrived. I installed that and thought I would have one last try to buy the book before I attempted your instructions below. It went straight though and the book is now being processed. Whether it was the update or the lateness of the hour - something seemed to work. It is all very strange as I had compiled and bought a similar size book just 2 months ago and all worked perfectly. Many thanks for all your suggestions. Hopefully I won't need them in the future! Regards Marlene On 17/03/2014, at 8:26 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hi Marlene, 1. Quit iPhoto. 2. Re: Java compromised
Hi Ronni Many thanks for this clarification. In my ignorance I disabled Java and Javascript and then found I could not access Westpac on-line to pay my Visa bill. I rushed up to the bank to pay in person, but unfortunately they had just closed. After reading your latest message I re-enabled Javascript and now find access to Westpac banking is OK. My thanks for your timely information - and for saving me a late payment fee! Regards Marlene Oostryck On 16/01/2013, at 4:38 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hi Merv (sorry about calling you Bill), A similar discussion is going on today on GMUG (who I also give my support to). A few members were confusing Java and JavaScript, so I posted this to GMUG. Might be also of interest to WAMUG members. DON'T get confused with Java and JavaScript... They are completely different! The JavaScript programming language, developed by Netscape, Inc., is not part of the Java platform. JavaScript, does not create applets or stand-alone applications. In its most common form today, JavaScript resides inside HTML documents, and can provide levels of interactivity to web pages that are not achievable with simple HTML. What are the differences between Java and JavaScript? Java and JavaScript are completely different, and are related only by the inclusion of Java in the name. The inclusion of the Java name in JavaScript was the result of a co-marketing arrangement between Netscape and Sun Microsystems back when Netscape was a dominant web browser, in exchange for Netscape bundling Java Runtime Environment (JRE) with its browser. Java is a programming language designed to run applets in a Java Virtual Machine on any computer/device that supports a Java Virtual Machine. Java applets generally do not interact with the Web page itself, but usually runs as a standalone program embedded in a Web page. ParaChat software offers a Java applet option so you can embed a Java chat room in your web page. JavaScript (originally known as LiveScript) is a scripting language that runs inside of an Internet browser to manipulate and enhance the contents of Web pages. JavaScript is designed to expand the capabilities of a web page so that it behaves more like a program than just a static page of text and images. Key differences between the Java and JavaScript. * Java is an OOP ( object oriented programming) language while Java Script is an OOP scripting language. * Java creates applications that run in a virtual machine or browser while JavaScript code is run on a browser only. * Java code needs to be compiled while JavaScript code are all in text. * They require different plug-ins. Re: HD recall campaign
Hi WAMUGGERS My experience with Apple for this replacement was very positive. After reading the comments from WAMUG member Jane G I followed the same route. One of my iMacs was eligible for replacement so I spoke with someone in Singapore, who referred me to an Apple rep in Brisbane, who passed me on to Unisys in Sydney, who arranged for a Perth rep to visit my home to replace the drive. This was arranged for a time that suited me and thankfully the original iMac and Time Machine was set up professionally by Daniel Kerr. (Just in case, I also backed my 30,000 important photos and docs onto an external drive as well as another iMac and Time Machine. (Listening to Ronni, you can never have too many back-ups!). The Senior Advisor from Apple in Brisbane even rang the Sydney Unisys people to check that this action had started and also kept in email contact with me to make sure all was satisfactory. The Perth Unisys man duly replaced the drive (40 minutes), and started the restore process from my Time Machine and this task was completed in 5 hours without a hitch. All is restored and functioning well. I was impressed with the professional and personal contact in what must be a mammoth undertaking with all these replacements. If you check on that site, some may not actually need it. Second thing, is yes, ensure you have a good backup. I would recommend a Time Machine backup of some sort, and a second back up as well. SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner are both great for this. SuperDuper - http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/13803/superduper! Carbon Copy Cloner - http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/7032/carbon-copy-cloner Once you have good backups of everything, then you're ready for it to go. Thirdly - I would check with the people you are getting the work done. Some places will have a wait time from when you drop the computer off to when it is ready. Most places (or all) aren't doing it on the spot, as they have a procedure they have to follow from Apple from when the machine is booked in, a special test run over it, the Drive ordered from Apple, then shipped, then fitted. Then ready to go. And if lots of people are all dropping them in, then there's going to be a lot of them booked in. ( I know one store had over 45 calls and emails the first few hours that email went out! And I got about 15 emails/calls myself within the first few hours also.). Fourthly, I would check what the place you are dropping it to do. Some places will just swap out the drive, give you a clean OS Install, so it's ready to Time Machine back in when you get it home. Some may just give you a blank clean drive for you to do all the work. Some may do a full clone and get everything back for you as you dropped it off. Again, it may vary depending on the place you take it to and their workload. (I'm guessing on the full clone, so I may be way off there, as I don't work for at a service/repair centre). It's going to be a fairly big undertaking for a lot of places I would think, so hopefully it will go nicely for everyone. :o) Hope that helps. Re: Internet and phone in Italy
Hi Peter I have just returned from time in Italy - ship and land. Most ships are incredibly unreliable, expensive and very slow with very high charges for internet/wi-fi connection - for either your or ship computers. (I have experienced up to half an hour to send 1 email and you pay by the minute!). The last ship I was on did not support any Apple products - only their MS computers. It often did not feel safe walking around some of the towns carrying/using my iPad but there were often internet cafes (very cheap) or internet/wi-fi connections available at ports or close by. Many hotels offer free internet connection using their machines. Internet/wi-fi connection in your room is more expensive. I didn't use my phone much but heard good reports of buying a local sim card. Re: Photos from camera to iPad - how to delete from iPad (IMPRT?)
Hello Daniel I have just found time to try your suggestion. Many thanks - it does delete the photos on my iPad - from IMPRT102, etc (Events), from Photos and from Albums -All Imported - simultaneously. It only seems possible to select one screen full at a time (about 35 photos) and I have about 6000 that I want to delete - but when Events changed to IMPRT102, IMPRT103, etc unfortunately the photos do not relate to the original Event - so it is better that I have to do this slowly and consider each photo. I don't really want to delete every photo on my iPad. Many thanks for your help. Re: Photos from camera to iPad - how to delete from iPad (IMPRT?)
Hello Ronni Many thanks for your reply. As I have a large number of photos to be deleted I will go with Daniel's suggestion for batch delete at this stage. I am still puzzled why Events changed to IMPRT102, IMPRT103, etc on my iPad and why they are now all mixed up out of date order. In the past Events loaded on the iPad in date order and stayed that way - and I was then able to manage them through iTunes/Devices/Photos. I will work at clearing unwanted photos from the iPad and then have a fresh look at it all. Regards and thanks. Re: Movies/photos between iPad and iMac
Hello Ronni Finally found time in between the chaos of leaving for 7 weeks overseas to try your suggestions. Many thanks. Unfortunately I was not successful. I tried these approaches: Made a test album in iPhoto 11 with 3 photos and a short video clip .MOV (I eventually want to have Albums that combine still photos and movie clips from travels). Approach 1. Using iTunes, selected the Test Album (by checking the box in the iPhoto album list) - but Advanced-Create iPad version was greyed out. (Sync Movies checkbox was enabled). Approach 2. Dragged the selected test movie from iPhoto 11 to the Desktop, then into the Movies section of iTunes, Create an iPad version (m4v). OK. Then dragged this back into iPhoto into my test album and synced it to my iPad. The 3 photos in the Test Album synced, but the movie clip did not - either into Photos or Movies. I am probably doing something quite silly - hope you or someone can sort me out. Re: Travels with my iPad
Hi Ronni Thanks as always. iPhoto 09 was so simple - but I will utilise your new info and set up this new system for iPhoto 11. There didn't seem to be anything about these changes in the iPhoto 11 video tutorial - I'm sure your knowledge would be snapped up by the many frustrated users! Perhaps Apple could set you up as a roving Apple Guru! When checking with recipients of mail with photo attachments sent directly from iPhoto 11(a phone call to each) it appears that they are arriving - but I can't find them listed in Sent Mail/Messages - either on Mail or on Webmail. iPhoto 11 works with email in a new way. Rather than using an Application to send the email as before, what they have done is handle the email within iPhoto. So, you input your Email Account details - the name of your service, the account name, password, etc, and iPhoto uses that information to send the email via your account. Emailing a photo usually means bouncing from your email application to your pictures folder and back again. But now you can create and send beautiful messages without leaving iPhoto. Just choose from eight Apple-designed themes that you customise with your own images and words. Then select the photos you want to send, and iPhoto places them in the template. Rearrange photos with a simple drag and drop, adjust the image mask, or change the size and style of your text. Even attach high-resolution versions of your photos for your recipient to download and keep. iPhoto optimises your message so it’s never too big to send. iPhoto works with popular email services like MobileMe, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Windows Live Hotmail, and AOL. And since iPhoto keeps track of all your email messages with photos, you’re free to open a sent message, make changes, and share it with someone new, anytime you want. —— To view email you send from iPhoto, you need to send yourself each email message. iPhoto can automatically send you a “blind” carbon copy (blind means that your recipients won’t see that you are a recipient too). Choose iPhoto Preferences, and then click Advanced. Select “Automatically Bcc myself.” You can also see whether or when you emailed a photo. Select the photo, click the Info button in the toolbar, and look in the Sharing section to see to whom and when the photo was sent. Click the entry in the Sharing section to open an email you’ve sent, so you can view, edit, or resend it. (If you don’t see a Sharing section, you haven’t shared the photo.) Emails on my iPad sent from Photos with 1 attachment indicated service was denied by Optus - but the emails were received 10 days later! Re: Travels with my iPad
Hello Ronni Many thanks for your suggestions. My Mail account change from POP3 to IMAP and also an upgrade from iPhoto 9 to iPhoto 11 (on my iMac) was done by Daniel Kerr just prior to my travels about a month ago - so I am sure it was correctly done. (My husband has just switched from PC to iMac and I wanted our software versions to be the same - hence the upgrade/installation - all done by Daniel). My iPad account (IMAP) was set up at the Perth Apple Store. I can send emails with photo attachments if I attach using the Photo Browser in Mail and they appear in my Sent list in Mail. When checking with recipients of mail with photo attachments sent directly from iPhoto 11(a phone call to each) it appears that they are arriving - but I can't find them listed in Sent Mail/Messages - either on Mail or on Webmail. Emails on my iPad sent from Photos with 1 attachment indicated service was denied by Optus - but the emails were received 10 days later! One of the other problems is that in the Trash, (Webmail and Mail) individual lines of email text are being listed as separate emails - hence overload for my account with Optus and emails are either blocked, or held for some days before being sent. Further discussions with Optus seems to suggest that I should revert back to a POP3 account - both on my iMac and iPad. I think this would be the easiest solution so will contact Dr Daniel to do the surgery'. It has all become too much for me! I am off overseas again in a few weeks time so would like this sorted ASAP. My thanks for your time. It is appreciated. PS: I have just read some Forum feedback on iPhoto 11 and many people seem to be having problems with email! Re-number sequencing in iPhoto
Hello Bernard and other interested WAMUGers As promised from the discussion at last night's meeting: I had a quick look at my notes from my One to One session at the Apple Shop and unfortunately they weren't very detailed but what I wanted to do was keep the manual order of a large number of photos from various cameras and then export them to a thumb drive and my iPad. The photos were put into a separate Album just for this purpose and moved around until I was happy with the order. Then; R click on the desktop/new folder. Back to my Album in iPhoto/select all/File/Export/File Name- (Sequential)/put in Prefix for sequential/Export to Folder on the desktop. Then drag/drop to where needed. (This action renumbered the photos in my Album - File name 1,2, etc. Original numbers and data was retained in my iPhoto event). I also did a Google search and there is a free download at: http://aurelio.net/soft/iphoto-set-sequential-title/ I haven't tried this but it looks promising. Also a Google search of iPhoto and Batch Change and came up with this: http://www.macworld.com/article/60893/2007/11/renameexportiphoto.html There are probably even simpler ways to do all this - but this worked for me. Re: iPhoto 11 - making calenders
Hi Peta I too tried to make calendars through Apple using iPhoto 09 but gave up after many obstacles. By chance, I looked at the Harvey Norman on-line site for making calendars and I have now received my 12 x 12 calendar, classic white design and the quality is just superb. I put all the photos I wanted to use in a separate album in iPhoto 09 and was easily able to upload them to place in my calendar - both in the top page and in birthday and wedding anniversary dates. The program is pretty easy to use and the results are outstanding. Ordered on line (on special $23.97 ea) and no postage if picked up from near-by store. If you go this route, chose Imagine uploader (in the prompts) for Macs. Have just posted off 5 as really great Christmas gifts! They have a good help line - Mon - Fri (9 - 5 EST) or give me a ring if you have any questions. I keep getting numerous spinning balls, after long pauses when I click Create. Then my screen shows one of the equally dreaded Error Messages/Reports, and then iPhotos and my partially completed calender drop right off screen. I have gone onto Help and typed in various questions without much luck. For example when I click on Create, the system chooses the photos of its own choice. There is a button on the right hand bottom side, one button says Design the other Photos. Surely if I click on Photos my iPhotos should open in some form and I should be able to change the photos the Mac has chosen and put in a photo which is relevant to me? Not so; I can delete the photo the Mac has chosen but when I click on the Photos button the whole shut-down spinning ball business starts off again. On Help, reference is made to the Drop Down Menu. I do not have any menu dropping down. I have been able to edit information on the dates portion of the calender, but can do nothing with the photos. Sometimes a row of photos appears briefly across the bottom of the calender screen, but they have no relevance to what I try to do. iPad and cruise ships
Hi All I have been considering the joys and fun of using an iPad for travel and have read all the info coming in with great interest - and also done lots of googling on the subject. My travel is mainly on cruise ships so pass through many countries during one cruise and internet access on board is very expensive. (I will be away nearly 3 months next year - Europe and Asia) Any comments/ideas on iPad use when cruising would be appreciated. seconds—this time under Snow Leopard. The first time you use Snow Leopard, a program called Mac OS X Setup Assistant runs. Many thanks in advance Hi Marlene, Prepare for, and Installation of Snow Leopard 1. Check your Computer can install run Snow Leopard: http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html 2. a) Check all your Applications you might be running and see if they have updates. b) Clean Up your computer. Uninstall old software you no longer use or require (if you don’t have the uninstaller for the application, download use AppZapper: http://www.appzapper.com/, delete any files you no longer need. c) If you use any add-on software such as plug-ins for mail or programs that rely on input managers such as 1Password Google Desktop, make sure you have upgraded to Snow Leopard-compatible versions before you upgrade. (A software compatibility check is included in the installation that has a list of known “bad” apps, and disables them. Those programs are moved to an “Incompatible Software” folder.) Note: Installation initially triggers a large chunk of data to be copied from the installation DVD to the user’s primary hard drive. The bulk of the installation is then managed from the hard drive, speeding up the installation process considerably. After a successful installation, that large chunk of data is automatically removed. 3. Check that your Printer will work in Snow Leopard. Mac OS X v10.6 Printer Scanner software included on the Snow Leopard Install DVD: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3669 4. Repair Permissions on your computer. 5. BACKUP your Computer check your backup before you commence the Installation 6. Decide whether you are going to install Snow Leopard as A) Automatic Upgrade or B) Erase and Install. A) AUTOMATIC UPGRADE: This is the default install. “The Snow Leopard installer’s single upgrade method attempts to make the transition as simple as possible by leaving almost all your files, applications, and settings in place. The installer simply replaces all the components of your old Mac OS X installation with their Snow Leopard equivalents, and it deletes those that are obsolete.” B) ERASE INSTALL: This will give a fresh install, erasing your entire disk and installing a clean copy of OS X 10.6. 7. OK, if you are ready … YOU HAVE BACKED UP … right! 8. Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon. A window appears with two buttons: Utilities and Continue. Click Continue: The Software License Agreement appears next; click Agree to proceed with the installation. 9. If you only have one volume on your computer it will be already be selected. 10. If you don’t wish to customise what software is installed, click the Install button, when asked are you sure you want to install Mac OS X, click Install again; then enter an administrator username and password, click OK. Make your self a cup of tea (or pour a glass of wine )… only don’t spill any on or near your computer. DON’T INTERRUPT THE INSTALLATION. The Default Installation should only take around 30mins. (I did a Customise install and it only took approx. 45mins.). 11. When the installation is finished, a Restart button appears—but if you don’t happen to be paying attention at the time, your Mac restarts by itself after 30 seconds—this time under Snow Leopard. The first time you use Snow Leopard, a program called Mac OS X Setup Assistant runs. You’ll know that’s what’s happening when you see the animated “Welcome” message and hear the music playing. Re: Video/camcorder purchase
Hi All Many thanks for all your suggestions - getting info from real users is appreciated. It is just bewildering to get info from photographic shops - they all have different opinions and don't seem to really know about Macs! The still photos are not a problem as my husband and I will continue to use Nikon and Canon cameras. Unfortunately I never did resolve the problem of making movies from still photos in iMovie/iDVD and getting an acceptable outcome. I have now purchased Toast 10 (from Daniel's recommendation) and when I can find some spare time (ha-ha) will try that out. It's been months since I looked at my problem iMovie/iDVD so will have to get the grey matter functioning again! I will continue to collect info on camcorders so that hopefully there will be a smooth transition from camcorder to iMovie/iDVD. I will purchase duty free one month before travel (Jan 2011) - (and there will probably be another heap of models released at Christmas just to confuse the issue!). Re: Best value wireless multifunction printer/scanne r for Mac?
Hi All Many thanks for all the recommendations - but - I have been out looking again this afternoon and came across a Canon MP560 for a really good price at Dick Smith - $ 129! The same machine was $229 at the Apple shop, $197 at JB Hi-Fi and the Good Guys, and $168 at Office Works. It really pays to shop around for the best deal. There is a shop here in Freo that has great prices for genuine ink cartridges so I hope I am set for the next few years. I want to scan and copy so a mono-printer will not suit, and a laser printer is too large for my small desk - so - I hope I have made the right choice. I have used Canon printers for 15 years with PC's without any problems at all - so hope the new Canon and Mac will work equally as well. Re: dvds
Hello Tom I have done quite a lot of research into the most reliable blank DVDs and the consensus seems to be that genuine Taiyo Yuden discs are the best - ie archival quality lasting 50 - 100 years!! It is important that they are genuine Taiyo Yuden - Made in Japan - and should be sealed in the TY packaging if possible. Also, consider the difference between OEM and Master quality. Also, if you want archival-type storage give some thought to inert archival quality envelopes/cases. Re: iPhoto Library lost
Thanks Ronni and Peter for your comments. No Ronni, I did not touch the iPhoto Library in Finder - but in iPhoto 09 just dragged and dropped or selected Photos/Send to Trash. I was deleting duplicates that I had imported from a thumb drive - amongst lots of other photos that I wanted. When importing from a thumb drive iPhoto does not seem to ask the question re skipping the importing of duplicates as it does when importing from a camera - but I may have missed the question. Also, I have plenty of memory so never empty the iPhoto trash - just in case I do make a mistake. Duplicate Annihilator certainly looks like it would be very helpful for me. I will also burn all the photos on to archive quality DVDs (Taiyo Yuden) as another back-up. I currently have them on cheaper DVDs at but believe they do not last more than 5-8 years and after hearing about 2 external hard drive crashes from Peter H I would prefer to use another format as well. I never cease to be amazed at the breadth of your knowledge - and your willingness to take the time to share it. Many thanks. Do I need to do anything extra to my restored iPhoto Library? Any info would be appreciated. Many thanks. You're already doing the best thing you can do by running Time Machine. It is precisely events like this that justify Time Machine's existence. Who knows what happened to cause the problem? Most computing disasters happen while we're not watching, and repetitive activities such as your manual cleanup activity are particularly prone to mishaps of this kind. I speak from experience here! The fact that the iPhoto Library accounts for the fact that iPhoto couldn't find it, and points to a possible keystroke accident while in the wrong screen. I will say that one of the first places I investigate after a computer disaster like this is the Trash folder. In addition to Time Machine, you might want to look around for some good iPhoto Library maintenance software, something that will sort out duplicates for you. I don't have any recommendations unfortunately, but I'm sure others will. Hi Marlene, How did you do your clearing out the duplicates within the iPhoto Application? You didn't touch the iPhoto Library in Finder (~/Pictures/iPhoto Library)? I would think you have as Peter suggest done a keystroke combination or such to move all the library photos to the Trash. If you have emptied iPhoto’s trash (note, iPhoto’s own trash, not the system trash); then it depends on whether you imported the photos directly into iPhoto, straight from the camera, or if they were already in other folder(s) before importing. In the latter case, and assuming you have not deleted the original folder(s), the photos will still be there. iPhoto detects duplicates of photos you have already imported from your camera and asks you if you want to skip those duplicates on importing. But when the duplicated photos are already in iPhoto “Duplicate Annihilator “ is the best app to use to find delete the duplicates. Duplicate Annihilator http://www.brattoo.com/propaganda/ is a good application for finding and deleting duplicate photos in iPhoto. Be aware that iMovie '09 uses 'single field processing' (Interlaced) meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 (iMovie HD) uses ALL of the image (Progressive) to form the video. If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie 06 (iMovie HD) is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. iMovie 06 (iMovie HD) and iDVD 09 is a lossless combination. iMovie '09 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble simple videos to share on the Internet. - After saying the above, it is not going to help you any as you don't have iMovieHD and Apple have ceased allowing it for download. So we work with what you have, that is, your project in iMovie'09, best quality export to get it into iDVD create a DVD of very good quality. As I mentioned in my previous email today … DON'T Share to iDVD! It is destructive especially to photos. I suggest you have three choices to get your iMovie project into iDVD create your DVD. 1. Share Media Browser - Large 720 x 540 2. Share Export Movie - creates a MPEG-4 (.m4v) 720 x 540 Audio 44,100 kHz 3. Share Export Using Quicktime - gives you control over Quicktime Settings. (Share always to your Movies folder, then when in iDVD you can click on Media - then Movies and locate your files). You could experiment with all the above settings, making sure that in iDVD you save your iDVD projects Save As Disc Image, so you can check before your waste any DVDs. I would suggest, in your case, that No.3 - Share Export Using Quicktime with these settings would give you the best quality DVD. Share Export using Quicktime In the export window that appears, Export: Movie to DV Stream, click Options DV Format: DV Video Format: PAL (leave it at interlaced, as DVD-PAL is interlaced) Aspect Ratio: 4:3 or 16:9 (depending on how your photos/project was imported) Audio Format: 48,000 kHz This will give you a Quicktime .dv file with Format DV, 720 x 576, Stereo, 48,000 kHz. Then you can Open iDVD, bring in your Movie file, and create your DVD. iDVD Preferences: Projects: PAL, Encoding: Professional Quality Once you know your project plays through correctly in iDVD. Go to File Save As Disc Image You then see a window Creating your DVD 1. Prepare 2. Process Menus 3. Process Slideshows 4. Process Movies 5. Burn After all the Rendering, encoding, processing movie, asset encoding, finally multiplexing burning is completed, a Disc Image is created. All this takes a long time, depending on the length of your movie. 6. Open the Disk Image and play it all the way through in DVD Player.app to check for any errors BEFORE you burn the Disc Image to a DVD-R Disc. 7. Burn at a slow speed - 2x or 4x for Single Layer DVD-R, 2x for Double Layer DVD+R DL. (I recommend using Verbatim DVD-R (for single layer) DVD+R DL Discs (for Double Layer). NOTE: I did a quick iMovie'09 project this afternoon, and Share to iDVD using No.2(Share Export Movie - creates a MPEG-4 (.m4v) 720 x 540 Audio 44,100 kHz) No.3 (Share Export Using Quicktime, with the settings I explained above). Saved the iDVD project as a Disk Image, (with both projects on the disk image. t Then burn't a DVD-R from the Disk Image using Toast Titanium 10, but you can use either the Finder or Disk Utility to burn a Disk Image to DVD. I found both the .m4v .dv with above settings produced a very good quality DVD when played in my DVD Player connected to TV. Possibly the DV format was slightly better, but that could just be my preference, there was not much difference that I could see with my eyes ;-) Hope this is helpful to you, as I would very much

IMovie 09 to iDVD 09 - terrible results
Hi All I have just burnt my first DVD from an iMovie project and have been really disappointed with the result. (iMac 10.5.8, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB) The image quality in iMovie is excellent but when played as a DVD on a TV there are moving horizontal lines and the image quality is very poor. A Google search on this problem turned up 130 discussion forums on others who have had similar results. The suggested solutions seem very complex: Use 1Movie 06 and then burn using Toast Don't use the Share feature from iMovie to iDVD - it is destructive of quality By-passing this Share feature - start using iDVD and import - but mixed results All sorts of manipulations in moving from iMovie to iDVD - all very technical and clunky. Don't use Ken Burns effect Buy Final Cut Pro or other software The consensus seems to be that Steve Jobs/Apple feel that DVDs are old fashioned and that sharing of home-produced movies will all be done via the Web so not much effort went in to iDVD 09! But there are millions who don't have internet access or prefer to watch these on their TV. My work flow for this 18 min DVD was: Edit photos in iPhoto - great! Produce iMovie project from still photos using Ken Burns, transitions, map screens, record voiceover, add background music - excellent finished product but very time-consuming Share to iDVD using Professional Quality/Pal using Verbatim DVD-R disc - terrible finished product. I have plenty of disc space available. I have used information from: iMovie 09 and iDVD- The Missing Manual iMovie 09 and iDVD Visual Quickstart Guide- Jeff Carlson Apple tutorials I have made many DVDs on a PC using Photo Story 3 software (free from Microsoft) and must admit that the process was far easier with no loss of quality in the finished DVD. The whole reason for shifting to a Mac was my impression that iMovie/ iDVD was more sophisticated with many more features. Sadly, I am finding that this is not so. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Hello all Many thanks for all the suggestions and hints. I have done lots of research and learnt heaps about usb mics!!! I borrowed an iMic from a friend and tried out my very basic Logitec mic but was not happy with the sound quality. I have now settled on a Blue Yeti which was released last year to rave reviews. I am now trying to decide whether to use my existing Logitec microphone (fairly basic) and purchase a Griffin iMic (thanks John) - or to upgrade to a better quality USB microphone. Re: iPhoto
Hello Ronni and others As a new iMac user - many thanks for all the tips and information. I am really enjoying the Switch after 15 years of PC and am continually amazed at the potential of the Mac! I have just placed an order for the book recommended by Ronni for iPhoto below and I have ordered lots of others so I know where I will be spending the holidays!!! There are great bargains to be had ordering from the US with the strong Aussie dollar. I got Switching to the Mac - The Missing Manual for AUD$29.50 including postage which retails here for AUD$85! I've checked out a number, including postage charges and one that was very efficient and cheap postage (www.betterworldbooks.com) sent this message: Hello Marlene, (Your book(s) asked to write you a personal note - it seemed unusual, but who are we to say no?) Holy canasta! It's me... it's me! I can't believe it is actually me! You could have picked any of over 2 million books but you picked me! I've got to get packed! How is the weather where you live? Will I need a dust jacket? I can't believe I'm leaving Mishawaka, Indiana already - the friendly people, the Hummer plant, the Linebacker Lounge - so many memories. I don't have much time to say goodbye to everyone, but it's time to see the world! I can't wait to meet you! You sound like such a well read person. Although, I have to say, it sure has taken you a while! I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but how would you like to spend five months sandwiched between Jane Eyre (drama queen) and Fundamentals of Thermodynamics (pyromaniac)? At least Jane was an upgrade from that stupid book on brewing beer. How many times did the ol' brewmaster have one too many and topple off our shelf at 2am? I know the trip to meet you will be long and fraught with peril, but after the close calls I've had, I'm ready for anything (besides, some of my best friends are suspense novels). Just five months ago, I thought I was a goner. My owner was moving and couldn't take me with her. I was sure I was landfill bait until I ended up in a Better World Books book drive bin. Thanks to your socially conscious book shopping, I've found a new home. Even better, your book buying dollars are helping kids read from Brazil to Botswana. But hey, enough about me, I've been asked to brief you on a few things: We sent your order to the following address: ... Wouldn't you want to buy from them again Thanks to all. Christmas Greetings! I will only try to explain Events for you in my reply. In the Events Preference Pane in iPhoto Preferences - Events - Autosplit into Events 'One event per day', 'One event per week' , Two-hour' or 'Eight- hour' gaps. iPhoto 09 (like its predecessor) automatically splits imported photos into Events based on the capture date of the photos. Usually this is very handy, but sometimes events can be split when it would be better to have them together. You can combine events by selecting them, then click the Merge button on the bottom toolbar. Or you can drag one Event onto another to merge the two Events. The result is a single Event. You can rename the Events, by clicking on the title field under the thumbnail. You can move photos between events, drag photos from one event to another in Photos view. You can Split Events, either by: 1. When you’re importing new photos, check Autosplit Events after Importing. 2. In Events view, select one or more events and choose Autosplit Selected Events from the Events menu. or 3. When viewing an event’s photos, select one or more photos and click the Split button. A good Video showing How to organise photos with Events in iPhoto '09 can be viewed here: http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/video/how-to-organize-photos-with-events-in-iphoto-09-278578/ Also, I would recommend purchasing 'iPhoto ‘09: Visual QuickStart Guide' http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/iphoto09-vqs Cheers, Ronni 17 MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz / 4GB / 800MHz / 500GB OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard Windows 7 Ultimate (under sufferance) -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
