I'm a little scared of the pricing that will be offered by the telcos for the
data plans, as Aussie telcos do not know the word ulimited, like the AT&T plan.
Which telco/s will offer this is also of concern and do any of our telcos
support the micro SIM that the iPad supports?

New product

2010-01-26 Thread Michael Waldie
This might be about as much as I've ever heard Steve say about an unannounced
product, from Apple's reporting of their first quarter financial results:

“If you annualize our quarterly revenue, it’s surprising that Apple is now a
$50+ billion company,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “The new products we are
planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major

Hi Lloyd,

Just on the Sandisk Cruzer.
The Sandisk CD will stay there. As far as I'm aware it has to be formatted with
Windows software or through their website which only works with Windows, to get
rid of this partition. This used to be the case and by the sounds of it, still
is.

I rebooted in Safe Mode. My USB thumb drives then refused to show up at all,

The two Google sites took roughly the same time but I had to move the cursor
to make the site open fully otherwise it just sat half through. Took about 4
seconds. No problems with that.

In Activity Monitor both disk and CPU show almost no activity.

With a normal boot the visualiser works fast enough as does a file transfer
and there seems to be nothing hogging the RAM.

The problem seems to be with ext disks and USB drives only.

I was given a 16Gig USB SanDisk Cruiser drive. It appeared on the desk-top
after about 2.5 minutes as well as a CD icon which had .exe files and
others. I reformatted it to get rid of all the exe files etc. But now when I
insert it two strange things happen; the CD still appears with the .exe
files, and my ext Time Machine back-up disk disappears.

I don't know whether these things are connected. The problems appear to be
around ext drives.

Hi Tom,

Going on with what Ronni & Gavin have said.

If it looked as though .fqm was the only extension and you deleted it from the
file name, did you put an extension on?
If there was multiple files they would probably have part1, part2 etc... in the
file name.
This is more often the case that I see. I would try putting .rar as the
extension and try that, hopefully you haven't deleted the files.

I download a couple of TV shows that are not on over here from the net but I
download them as single files. On the odd occasion I get split files they are
.rar and StuffIt never haves any probs.

Hi Severin,

I have not come across a printer/scanner unit that is
supported using Airport Express/Extreme, if anyone has had success, please do

scanning that would work.
I have seen a couple of HP printer/scanner units with built in wifi work quite
well, no experience with Epson though.

looking to add a MacBook and an iMac and to purchase a printer/scanner. He
will phase out the desktop PC except for occasional necessary Windows tasks

The D-Link does not have a USB printer port but I see that printer/scanner
units are available with Wifi connectivity (Epson TX550W for example). Would
the best way to go be to invest in Airport Express/Extreme and get a non-wifi
printer/scanner and use the printer facility to share among all units. This
would make the wifi bit of the D-Link redundant but would not require a
wireless enabled printer. Clearly the iMac and PC will be deskbound and can
connect to the printer by ethernet (or wireless for the iMac).
My own system is centred around an Airport Extreme and a DSL-504 router/modem
and I share a laser printer among three computers very happily, including a
wireless MacBook.
Are there issues with printer/scanner units on this sort of setup?
Words of wisdom will be welcomed.

Comparing the i5 or i7 to my 24" iMac with a 2.8GHz, there'll be quite
a noticeable difference?

Too right - the home Mac is only a dual-core iMac 24" which takes a

the 2.8 GHz Core i7 can go up to 3.46 GHz in Turbo Boost mode.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Core i7 also supports Hyper-
threading which effectively gives you twice the number of logical
cores for a grand total of 8 cores. If you need to run lots of apps
at once or you have things like video compression jobs and VMware and
other multi-threaded apps running and want to spread your load over
multiple CPUs, this feature can be very useful. The Core i5 however
does not support Hyper-threading.

I've found hyper-threading very useful on my 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro
as

with hyper-threading Mac OS X shows it is running on a 16 core
monster. I am able to fully max out my 12GBs of RAM running several
video compression jobs (which are each multi-threaded over up to 4
cores each), dual-core Windows XP and a second dual-core VM running
Vista, and a stack of other Mac apps without any slow downs at all.
It is not quite as fast as 16 real cores, but it definitely does
encoding and other multi-threaded tasks faster than 8 maxed-out
physical cores. (having 4 x 1TB drives hardware RAIDed internally
helps a lot as well so that disk access doesn't become the
bottleneck).

I did not have a part in sending the email or any of the addresses. I
have been trying to get the name around by word of mouth in person.
Unfortunately, the last few days I have been busy with family

I have been told that there is not an email list but it was a
collection of emails, apparently some old and some new.
I have also been told that people who did not want to be contacted
again, will not be. The email was not intended to be spam/junk email.

While I can not change what has happened, I can understand the
complaints.

It is correct that I am not a financial member of WAMUG but I have
been on and off the list for quite some years.
I tried to offer assistance where I could, most of the time there were
a lot of people who gave the advice before I could. Certainly a good
thing that there is many people here to help each other.

If you would like me gone from the list here, I can understand.

Personally I have not heard about the iPhone coming out so soon, I'm
guessing that date in Feb is to coincide with the opening of the
Sydney Apple store? I don't think we will see the iPhone in Australia

Re: Best Mac Source/Support

2008-01-25 Thread Michael Waldie

Tony,

Unfortunately we at Digilife can not provide student pricing from
Apple any more. Like Martin suggested, Peder and Maria at Curtin can
certainly help out for the education purchase.
With Digilife's service centre, on Oxford St in Mount Hawthorn, they
can take care of warranty/support whether it was purchased from
Digilife or any other Apple retailer.

I always drive over there, despite being much closer to another

Helpful store, and a good service centre.

Suggestions/experiences greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

Just to note a fix for me. My mother had also been having this issue
and after reading this message I checked that it was Safari 3.0.4,
which it was. I then reset Safari and it logged in fine.

Thanks Ronni for the suggestions.

I've just been able to login without any problems using Safari 3.0.4

Try: Reset Safari, uncheck 'Block Popup Windows', and have Java &
JavaScript enabled.

Also restart your computer.

If I remember what else I did, I'll let you know.

Cheers,

We have an eMac and iMac with 10.2.4 for some time now without the date
and time problems. Just got the 12" PowerBook and that should be
updated to 10.2.4 tomorrow, so we'll see then.

Hi Rosemary,

Photoshop Elements 2, Keynote and MYOB are all OS X native. Quicken
I believe is not available for the Mac outside the U.S.

Photoshop Elements 2 and Keynote both have academic pricing. MYOB does
not, unfortunately. We usually have copies of Photoshop Elements 2 in
stock and are looking at getting Keynote in. MYOB we do not keep in
stock as it doesn't have academic pricing. Usually students just buy
the MYOB test drive, which has full working versions of most of their
PC products and Palm OS, but also AccountEdge for the Mac. I'm sure
they will bring out a new version soon with FirstEdge on it as well.

All you need is to come in and produce current student I.D. with a
photo on it and you can receive the products at academic prices.

If you would like prices via email, contact me off list.

I've got to say that I'm very impressed. I have Omniweb as my main
browser, but usually change between that and IE as there are a few
sites I regularly go to that work better in one than the other. So far,
with Safari, all is looking good!

The thing I don't like about autofill is that quite often I'm typing
words similar to what is in the autofill but not those exact words.
Some that are shorter and then you press enter after the word and it
puts the word there instead of the what I'm after. Admittedly this
would not happen to just about everyone else, but I don't care for the
autofill feature being none existant.

I had a customer who had a S1000SP which at the time was not supported
in OS X (10.1.x at the time). There was an OS X native driver on the
U.S. website, but not the Aussie site for Canon. I tried the US driver
and it still listed the S1000SP as unsupported in the Print Centre. The
customer ended up deciding to buy a new printer anyway as they wanted a
better quality printer.

I have a feeling it may the same for the N1240U and would explain the
warning for each region.

Wireless USB adapters

2002-07-05 Thread Michael Waldie
Does anyone have any experience with USB wireless (802.11b) adapters for
older Macs, like the first iMacs.

At home we have a Linksys access point and a PC (not mine) with a Linksys
wireless PCI card. But we also have a Graphite iBook 366MHz (OS 9.2 &
10.1.5) which I¹ve found out that with an Airport card will work with the
Linksys AP <http://www.macwindows.com/airportpc.html>

Now the only machine we need to check out is the Rev A iMac. All the USB
wireless adapters I¹ve seen are only for Win 98/Me/2000.

Does any one know of any software that can make any of these work with the
Mac?

Any feedback appreciated.

T,

Depending on the software that you are after. We have many titles here
that only require the purchaser to show their current Student ID card with a
photo on it. Others are more strict than this and require enrolment forms,
to be in particular courses etc

If you let me know the software you¹re after, I can help you out.

VideoCD in Quicktime on OSX

2002-05-06 Thread Michael Waldie
Hey y¹all,

I¹ve a customer who wants to watch VCDs on his new LCD iMac
and he told me it didn¹t work. I told him it used to work with Quicktime in
OS 9 and that it should be the same still. It doesn¹t seem to be though. He
brought it in to us and still no go.

Using Quicktime 5, OS X.

He told me he has found MacVCD, a shareware program that works in X, but
it¹s only available online. Problem is he doesn¹t have a credit card
(international student on scholarship).

Any Ideas?

Solutions tried:
* Quicktime Pro made no difference
* Looked through WAMUG archives
* Looked in AppleCare¹s Knowledge Base

Any suggestions would be welcome

I think you may have to check whether these work with a Mac. I had a
customer who ordered a 1250U2F but didn¹t state he was planning to use iton
a Mac and when he took it home it didn¹t work. I know the drivers aren¹t on
the Canon Aust. site. He did try VueScan from VersionTracker but to no
avail.

Just a warning.

It just started on my home machine last night (iMac 233 Rev A, 160MB, 20GB,
OS 9.1).
I downloaded emails, then it froze. Restarted and I get a little dialogue
box that is empty, I close that one and another pops up saying
³Finder has unexpectantly quit, try quitting all other programs and
restarting²
Close that box and it works fine.

Replaced Finder from my OS 9.1 CD as I thought it might be corrupt, still no
change.
