airport express/printer

With help from my daughter I got my Airport express working so that I  
can share adsl with my powerbook and my husband's ibook.


One of the big problems was that as soon as I plugged the usb cord  
from my Canon MP780 the airport express disappears, base station does  
not exist.  Any clues?

Same thing happened with couple of different  blank disk on my new  
Powerbook with Tiger. Didn't fix if I ejected and re-inserted.  
Wouldn't even mount. Took it to Digilife and Alex inserted a new disk  
(dvd), and demonstrator Magic! it was fixed! No trouble when I went  
home, and merrily burnt disks to my heart's content.

users confusion

Just wondering if anyone has an idea about deleting users.
I didn't know I should have moved my old stuff from my imac before I  
set up a user on my power book. Now I have 2. One which has virtually  
nothing in it which is my new users; and one which is a copy of my  
old one. Unfortunately when I log in as the old user I can't download  
any files (dmg, rtf etc) Just get a message "can't create files" but  
works Ok with the new user. Up to this point I was just going to  
delete the new user, but now I don't know. Any ideas?

While waiting for suggestions about airport express I tried to use the 
firewire to transfer stuff from my old imac to brand new powerbook.


Firstly Migration utility didn't like that the user was named the same, 
so asked me to rename incoming user files.

Then it moved all the stuff to a subfolder of my home directory.
1)Do I just drag it to the appropriate usual place?
2) many of the folders are marked red and have 0kb eg Pictures; itunes 
Do I just drag these over individually or is there some reason they 
weren't copied over?



When I have time I'll try the airport suggestions.

trouble with airport express

Anybody got some ideas  about setting up Airport express for a wireless 
connection? We want to set up a mini-network with my husband's ibook 
and my powerbook but we can't connect even one to the airport express.


I connected my new powerbook directly to the modem etc no trouble, but 
when I plug in the airport there's no joy.


Firstly the airport express just blinks orange..never gets to green.

The instructions say go to airport setup and follow the directions. But 
there comes a time to choose the airport and it's not there; or 
something called apple network followed by numbers is there. If I 
select  configure and there's no connection.


The airport admin is even more confusing.

I'm lost. This is all new to me.

Anybody got any clues?

Thanks to those who tried to help.

I solved the problem, after hours of tearing out hair!

Guess what? Where the site was hosted the "helpful" hosting company 
added Frontpage extension files (gobs of them) without me asking them 
to do so. I stripped all of these files, re-loaded my files and now all 
is behaving splendidly! Oh how I hate Microsoft!!

buying new apple stuff help

We are just about at the end of our 3 yr rental period with our trusty 
imac and are thinking of buying 2 machines (who gets to play on the 
shiny apple..me..me!!


So current thinking is
 1 ibook for Roger who writes and searches the net for research and
one 15 in superdrive powerbook for me because I give presentations; 
design web pages; collect oodles of photos and do lots of stuff on the 
net (as well as test lots of different software)


Is this a better solution that a desktop imac and a 12 powerbook (cause 
we'll have advd drive in the imac.


Now some questions.

Is the applecare warranty worth the money? Do the notebooks die that 
much after the first year?


What's the best way to transfer all the stuff we want to keep from the 
present imac to one or other of the notebooks?


I know how to copy documents etc but how do I move email and 
addressbook contacts and iphoto library etc


A lot of questions, but after 12 years on windows machines (yuk!) we 
are very happy "switchers" , I still don't know much about the backend 
of macs (nothing much goes wrong so you don't need to!)

OT Dreamweaver and css

I've just been setting up a new website (for a friend) All was going 
swimmingly, but all of a sudden whether I link the css sheet  with 
document relative or  site relative links the pages are  still not 
loading the style sheets.
At the same time, when I try to change the style sheet Dreamweaver 
loads the css sheet on the remote site.


Strange! Anyone got a clue?

My daughter has an ibook (my suggestion) and loves it. Runs quite 
happily on LAN at her house with other (windows) laptops and pcs. She 
was told she can' t connect to the wireless network in the library at 
Curtin because "they don't support macs" Is this true? If so, I 
obviously gave her the wrong advice about a notebook of choice!


 If not how does she connect to the network?  (step-by-step) She finds 
this a very great disadvantage in doing her study.

Downloading music from Destra

I downloaded a track from Destra music  
http://MusicandGames.destramusic.com (still waiting for Apple to get 
their act together!)


It was in wma format..wouldn't play on Windows Media player on my Imac 
(Panther) (says it only plays on Windows WMA player!)


 Message reads
"The content you are trying to play is restricted to Windows Media 
Version 7.1 and above running on Windows Operating systems"


Downloaded Easywma http://www.carrafix.com/EasyWMA/ which is supposed 
to convert wma to mp3.


This programme says it converts the file but it converts the title and 
nothing in it.


Reading further it says  "Notice that EasyWMA will not convert wma 
audio files including DRM. For these files, EasyWMA will problably just 
create an empty file."


Don't have a clue what DRM is.

Anybody had better success with playing files from Destra?

flash drive problem

Just bought a new 1 gb flash drive. It was already partitioned, with a 
whole lot of (useless) Windows exe files etc. When I copied some files 
to the smaller partition and looked at it a windows computer and an 
ibook only the larger partition showed up.


Anybody got a clue?
