Power board plug orientation

2011-07-29 Thread Skehan Adrian

Good morning all,

A NFP organisation I do some volunteering with have about 15 mobile phones all
neatly arranged so that they can be kept track of. It is necessary to have
several of them on charge at one time and the power pins on the chargers are
arranged so that the body of the charger is a right angles and covers the
outlet next to it with the result that you can only use every second outlet.
My question is; does anyone know of a power board with the outlets orientated
the other way around?

Re: Lion

2011-07-21 Thread Skehan Adrian

Thanks for that, I have downloaded and installed Lion, the Apple site appears
to be running very very slow, I guess there is a lot of traffic at present, and
connection turned it into a bit of a marathon but it appears to be working OK.

I logged the MacBook Pro into my App store account and went through the
purchasing process again and when I clicked on the purchase button it said I
had already paid for it and allowed me to download it again. Its still running
very slow.

I also ran the software updater and it downloads 9 updates (over a Gb)but at
the end of the install process it said none of the updates could be installed.
I click on install again and it started the download process again.

Has anyone else had this problem?

iTunes

2011-07-21 Thread Skehan Adrian

Good morning all,

Having installed Lion on both the iMac (27 i7) and the MacBook Pro I have had
to download the 9 updates for them one at a time otherwise it fails to install
any of them at the end of the downloading phase and the download has to start
from scratch. I eventually got them all installed except iTunes which I
downloaded from the support site rather than the update app. It installed on
the MacBook Pro OK but won't install on the iMac it comes up with an error and
says contact the manufacturer. There is also a problem with the iPhone 4 update
it stalls and times out on both machines.

I tried ringing support but a lengthy cue there. has anyone else had this

  Hi all,

I guess liking or not liking a piece of software is a personal choice
affected by many factors, but speaking for myself I think Lion is
fantastic! I have been using it for about four weeks now and the gestures
have become second nature. Also Mission Control gives a superb overview of
all running applications -- I personally hardly ever use Dashboard, so I
unchecked the System Preference Show Dashboard as a space. I can still
access Dashboard using the F4 key on my MacBook Pro (it's a different key
on an iMac). Another setting that I have become used to, even during the
Snow Leopard era, is the three finger drag. This means that switching
spaces in Mission control has been bumped for me to a four finger gesture.

The graphics are hyper responsive! Switching desktops is an instantaneous
operation and once can even move the screen across in slow motion. The
inertia and responsiveness of the two finger scroll is reminiscent of an
iPad. I also use Launchpad often and access it via the three finger plus
  thumb pinch.

I think that another clever aspect of Lion is that Apple has maintained
backward compatibility of keystrokes and mouse clicks. If you don't want
to use the new gestures, or if you want to phase them in gradually, you
can still get by using the old keystroke combinations.

I like the full screen view for some apps, like Safari, but prefer to run
Mail on its own desktop so that responding to an email does not tie up the
main interface. Pages and Numbers are better in full screen mode for me.
Unless I need to work on multiple documents, full screen removed
distractions. The automatic versioning and saving is a breakthrough and I
  have already benefited from versions.

There are some rough edges that I hope will be fixed in OS X 10.7.1. There
was a lot of pressure to get Lion out the door because it was holding up
the release of new hardware, so a few things are not as polished as they
should be. The problems, however, a likely easily fixed over the coming
  weeks.

  * Mail has become unstable. I find that when overloaded it will crash.
This happens to me about once every two days. Fortunately automatic saving
means that the most I have lost is two words.
  * Safari in full screen mode does not behave properly when one reverse
pinch zooms in. The text, rather than being laid out afresh and wrapping
correctly, just extends beyond the edge of the screen.
  * I have had some initial trouble reconnecting to my router on wake up,
but this problem seems to have disappeared by itself. I think the release
version may have corrected this as I was using the developer GM version
  until yesterday.

I have submitted reports to Apple for the first two of the above defects
-- the Mail crash report being automatically generated.

  Cheers,
  Carlo

One other note,

Initially it opened with QuickTime v 10.0. When it wouldn't play beyond the
first couple of seconds I quit it, opened QuickTime v 7 but the result was even
worse.

Fwd: MacKeeper

2011-06-03 Thread Skehan Adrian

Good morning all,

Early last May there was a post on MacKeeper which seemed to come to an abrupt
close following Ronni's comment. The application has some interesting elements
to it such as Fast Clean which suggested that there is over 6 GB of junk,
including foreign languages and lots of preference files for long disused
applications, etc. Anti-Theft, Duplicate Finder and Undelete look interesting.

Does anyone have anything good to say about it?

The other burning questions in my mind are: Has anyone tracked down just what
it is about it that may causes the sort of problems that Ronni came up against?
and has the MacKeeper people had anything to say on the matter?

Re: MacKeeper

2011-06-03 Thread Skehan Adrian

Thanks Daniel,

I am always nervous about applications that can do all so to speak, they are
generally too good to be true (safe in this case).

I had no problems deleting it with CleanApp and using Ronni's post as a guide I
could not find any trace of it afterwards, but then again I only tried the Fast
Clean and kept well away from the Anti Virus thing which I think can be the
most destructive thing you can install particularly if you already have one
running.

However,...and the following is my personal opinion..
Any program/company that advertises the way it does, and has pop ups on some
of the sites I use (even though I have pop ups turned off) doesn't get my
 vote.
Also, the software does seem to put its hooks through the system a lot.
Something I don't particularly care for.
And, lastly if you do a search for MacKeeper pop ups you'll see a lot of
reviews on people that have a) installed it and found it not good and b) had
 trouble removing it.

Here for example is one thread on it:-
 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2786697?start=0tstart=0

There's just something about that software I can't quite put my finger on
 it,...but I personally don't like it.
The threat of it doing more damage then good can also be a bit of a worry.
 ;o)

Again, this is just my personal opinion.

The second part to your question, is sort of in the answer above. In that it
installs components all over the system. And the removal tool doesn't seem
to get them all. So you have to do lots to get rid of it. That is part the
 problem.

 Hope that helps a little.

 Kind regards
 Daniel

Re: Epson Stylus Photo TX700W MFP Wireless Printer

2008-10-25 Thread Skehan Adrian
Scanning old BW negatives can be easily done without expensive
scanners, I saw a demonstration of this a few years ago at a WAGS
computer group meeting and the results were impressive. It consisted
of a standard type scanner and software and a wooden box painted white
inside with a light bulb fitted inside. The box can be made to the
desired size but some investigation may be needed to determine the
best light bulb to use. It worked a treat.

Hello People,

After a disastrous few days without a Multi Function Printer after
my Epson RX700 died last Saturday (why does equipment decide to die
on week-ends?).
Daniel (of MacWizardry) pulled out all stops and went beyond the
call of duty, allowing me to use his MF Printer so I could print my
designed labels onto some DVD's to complete a job I had to deliver
on Monday.

Daniel contracted the wholesaler (when they opened) on Monday and
rushed up to pickup the NEW Epson Stylus Photo TX700W MFP Wireless
Printer (that has just arrived in WA).
Which I then picked up from Daniel's and after a few hours of
unpacking, installing the TX700W Software Drivers, I was back in
business.

Setting it up to Connect to my Airport Wireless Network took a
little longer (the instructions were a little confusing), but
perseverance paid off and eventually I had TX700W connecting to my
Airport Network (using Ethernet Cable connected to my Remote
Airport Base Station) and I was Printing / Scanning / copying /
print to Disc / Wirelessly ... no cables connected to my
MacBook Pro!

I loved my Epson RX700, but, he only lasted 3 years and cost $699AU
http://www.epson.com.au/products/multifunctional/stylusphotorx700.asp

The NEW Epson Stylus Photo TX700W MFP Wireless Printer only costs
$299AU ...

http://www.epson.com.au/products/multifunctional/stylusTX700W.asp
If you look at the flash movie it says 'Carefree wireless
connection' A wireless LAN module enables printer sharing among
multiple users at home or in the office. An array of functions,
including scanning, copying printing can be used on a wireless

To be able to wirelessly Print / Scan / Copy on a wireless network.
Now that is TERRIFIC!

Hi Neil,

Old and new DNS information -- yes, this is due to the
behind-the-scenes mechanics. When you type in a name, it is translated
by the database of *your* DNS server, which got the data from *its*
DNS server, which got the data from *its* DNS server, and this chain
continues all the way back to the authoritative server. You do not
directly query the authoritative server, because then the whole world
of computers would be hitting large servers (like .com) a squillion
times per second (which would be slow, costly, and less reliable for
your ISP). Instead, you query your own DNS server, which gives you the
latest copy of the info it has. But this isn't always the absolute
latest information. Occasionally this is bad (because you're out of
date compared to the authoritative servers) and occasionally it's good
(because corrupt records in the authoritative servers get corrected
before they reach you).

Actually apparently the Aboriginal name for the area is 'Oondiri'
meaning 'the waterless'. :-)

http://www.answers.com/topic/nullarbor-plain

According to the Britannica Concise Edition:
The name Nullarbor is derived from the Latin nullus arbor (no
tree)

and Wikipedia:
The Nullarbor Plain is part of the area of flat, almost treeless,
arid or semi-arid country immediately north of the Great Australian
Bight. The word Nullarbor is derived from the Latin nullus for
'nothing' or 'no one' and arbor for 'tree', and is pronounced NULL-
uh-bore (IPA: /ˈnʌləbɔr/).

Thankfully Latin was a type of dancing style by the time I went thru
school! :-D

Domain Name problem

2008-10-20 Thread Skehan Adrian
For some reason I cannot access web page at http://www.skehan.id.au/ (http://www.skehan.id.au/Home/Welcome.html
) which is hosted on .Mac was working file when we left home a couple
of weeks ago. The domain name people say that they can access it
externally but I get the following response no matter how I go about it:

Safari can’t find the server.

Safari can’t open the page “http://www.skehan.id.au/Home/Welcome.html”
because it can’t find the server “www.skehan.id.au”.

and

Address Not Found

Firefox can't find the server at www.skehan.id.au.

The site pages are listed in my .Mac account but the same thing
happens when I try to access it from there. I uploaded some new pages
which are listed but can access them.

Can anyone out there give me a clue as to where to start looking please.

Hello Adrian,

You have to select a range of video before these options are
visible, by dragging across a clip (clicking on a point in a clip
holding down the mouse button as you drag).
To Edit 'Reveal in Event Browser' you click on a clip then it shows

MobileMe

2008-07-11 Thread Skehan Adrian
My G5 set up easily for MobileMe however, there is still no sign of an
update for my Intel MacBook and I cant find anything on the Apple site
to guide me. The MacBook is logged into .Mac via System Preferences
and I can access my account and settings etc. I can also access my www.me.com.idisk
and its contents but it is still Syncing with .Mac which is causing
duplication of all information in my contacts.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Re: iDisk uploads

2008-07-09 Thread Skehan Adrian
Thanks Peter, I have been going around in circles for a while trying
to sync my desktop and MacBook but seem to only cause problems with
duplicated data and it seems to slow everything down to the extent
that I just give up, so I am hanging out for MobileMe to get going, it
sounds like it will be much better and hopefully not as slow.

The answer is Yes, as long as you have .Mac Sync turned on. The
iDisk at .Mac will be updated according to the schedule you set in
the .Mac Sync System Preferences. Of course, even if you don't set
up a schedule you can still sync manually. Click the Check Box to
allow the .Mac Sync icon to appear in the Menu Bar to make manual
syncing more accessible.

Trouble is, that will be the American July 11. July 12 here, of

Re: password problem

2008-06-08 Thread Skehan Adrian

Thanks Rob and all.

Tried that Rob and the permissions repair did find a problem but still
no joy. Taking a step back, the 2 initial attempts to upgrade the
installation failed which left me nowhere so the upgrade was done in
Target mode via my G5 iMac, I have tried every combination of user
name and password belonging to the PowerBookPro and the iMac--on the
off chance that the installation process had adopted the iMac
KeyChain, all to no avail.

All files on the PowerBookPro is accessible in Target mode. I am
thinking that transferring all the files to another disk and having
another shot at running the Installer is the next option.

Adrian

library and ignores the others.

Hi Lloyd,

Using your iPhoto Library Manager:

iPod folders allow you to sync photos from across multiple
libraries to your photo capable iPod. iTunes will allow you to sync
photos either from your iPhoto library or a folder of pictures, but
when syncing from an iPhoto library, it will only sync from the
currently active library, meaning you can't mix and match photos
from different libraries. What an iPod folder does is allow you to
specify different albums that you want to sync with your iPod from
any or all of your libraries.

iPhoto Library Manager will automatically copy the photos from those
albums into a folder you specify (the iPod folder), putting each
album of photos inside a subfolder. You can then tell iTunes to sync
with that folder instead of with iPhoto, which will put the pictures
from the albums you selected onto your iPod.

Unregistered users are limited to a single iPod Folder with a
maximum of 100 photos at a time.

Re: scanning negatives

2008-02-07 Thread Skehan Adrian
I have seen it done by constructing a small box of Melamine with a
globe inside, masking it to suit the size of the negative and sitting
it on top of a scanner and It worked a treat. I cant remember the
finer details so you may have to experiment a bit with the power of
the globe.

2005-12-09 Thread Skehan Adrian
I just installed my G5 iMac (Maxed out on Ram and HD,) everything
works great except that neither private or commercial DVDs' wont

eventually spits it out, my iMac G4 plays them OK. It burns and
plays CDs' without any problems.

Does any one have any ideas please?

2005-07-01 Thread Skehan Adrian
The CEO at my favourite charity is having a serious problem with
applications quitting unexpectedly. Having spent a couple of hours
las night producing a document in Word, with the Auto Save set to 1
minute intervals and physically clicking the Save button, Word just
quit and the document vanished off the server, where it was saved to
and had been closed and re-opened a couple of times since creating
it, there is definitely no trace of it anywhere. He tells me that,
except for the disappearing document, the same thing happens with
Safari and FileMaker (not convinced about that one.)

I expect that the stock answer is to not use Word, but has anyone out
there heard of anything like this happening elsewhere?

Office X 10.1.4, iMac 800 Flat Pane, Tiger (10.4.1) connected to an X

Yes, we seem to have problems with people editing documents on the
server using Word. One of the favourite things it does is to
corrupt documents by destroying tables. We also occasionally have
disappearing documents (and folders).

I'd suggest trying copying documents locally, editing them and then
putting them back on the server. At least for a while to see
whether it improves things.

If Safari and Filemaker are quitting though, there may be another
problem. I'd also suggest checking the system log files to see if
they can shed any light, and try memtestosx from http://
www.memtestosx.org/ on his machine overnight to see if there are
any RAM problems.

If you're brave, you can try suggesting using NeoOffice/J or
OpenOffice instead of Word, but changing mindsets is a much more
difficult task to accomplish than changing machines :)

Have fun,
Shay

OfficeX

2005-06-23 Thread Skehan Adrian
Can anyone please advise me if, with the main focus on Entourage,
there is any advantage or otherwise in upgrading from Office X 10.1.4
to the current Office 2004 version.
There is a new CEO at the NFP organisation, where I put some time in,
who is a Microsoft victim and is having some trouble coming to grips
with the fact that an iMac doesn't have M/s XP or Explorer. He's a

Thanks to all for the suggestions, unfortunately non of them solved
the problem. I finally got the time to call the Apple help line
(expecting to have to hold on for a long time) but , surprise
surprise, I got straight through. After trying another account the
answer was to do an Archive and Install which took less than half an
hour and low and behold the 10.4.1 update was there and it installed
without any problems at all.
