Power board plug orientation
Good morning all, A NFP organisation I do some volunteering with have about 15 mobile phones all neatly arranged so that they can be kept track of. It is necessary to have several of them on charge at one time and the power pins on the chargers are arranged so that the body of the charger is a right angles and covers the outlet next to it with the result that you can only use every second outlet. My question is; does anyone know of a power board with the outlets orientated the other way around? Re: Lion
Thanks for that, I have downloaded and installed Lion, the Apple site appears to be running very very slow, I guess there is a lot of traffic at present, and connection turned it into a bit of a marathon but it appears to be working OK. I logged the MacBook Pro into my App store account and went through the purchasing process again and when I clicked on the purchase button it said I had already paid for it and allowed me to download it again. Its still running very slow. I also ran the software updater and it downloads 9 updates (over a Gb)but at the end of the install process it said none of the updates could be installed. I click on install again and it started the download process again. Has anyone else had this problem? iTunes
Good morning all, Having installed Lion on both the iMac (27 i7) and the MacBook Pro I have had to download the 9 updates for them one at a time otherwise it fails to install any of them at the end of the downloading phase and the download has to start from scratch. I eventually got them all installed except iTunes which I downloaded from the support site rather than the update app. It installed on the MacBook Pro OK but won't install on the iMac it comes up with an error and says contact the manufacturer. There is also a problem with the iPhone 4 update it stalls and times out on both machines. I tried ringing support but a lengthy cue there. has anyone else had this problem? I have been using it for about four weeks now and the gestures have become second nature. Also Mission Control gives a superb overview of all running applications -- I personally hardly ever use Dashboard, so I unchecked the System Preference Show Dashboard as a space. I can still access Dashboard using the F4 key on my MacBook Pro (it's a different key on an iMac). Another setting that I have become used to, even during the Snow Leopard era, is the three finger drag. This means that switching spaces in Mission control has been bumped for me to a four finger gesture. The graphics are hyper responsive! Switching desktops is an instantaneous operation and once can even move the screen across in slow motion. The inertia and responsiveness of the two finger scroll is reminiscent of an iPad. I also use Launchpad often and access it via the three finger plus thumb pinch. I think that another clever aspect of Lion is that Apple has maintained backward compatibility of keystrokes and mouse clicks. If you don't want to use the new gestures, or if you want to phase them in gradually, you can still get by using the old keystroke combinations. I like the full screen view for some apps, like Safari, but prefer to run Mail on its own desktop so that responding to an email does not tie up the main interface. Pages and Numbers are better in full screen mode for me. Unless I need to work on multiple documents, full screen removed distractions. The automatic versioning and saving is a breakthrough and I have already benefited from versions. There are some rough edges that I hope will be fixed in OS X 10.7.1. There was a lot of pressure to get Lion out the door because it was holding up the release of new hardware, so a few things are not as polished as they should be. The problems, however, a likely easily fixed over the coming weeks. * Mail has become unstable. I find that when overloaded it will crash. This happens to me about once every two days. Fortunately automatic saving means that the most I have lost is two words. * Safari in full screen mode does not behave properly when one reverse pinch zooms in. The text, rather than being laid out afresh and wrapping correctly, just extends beyond the edge of the screen. * I have had some initial trouble reconnecting to my router on wake up, but this problem seems to have disappeared by itself. I think the release version may have corrected this as I was using the developer GM version until yesterday. I have submitted reports to Apple for the first two of the above defects -- the Mail crash report being automatically generated. Fwd: MacKeeper
Good morning all, Early last May there was a post on MacKeeper which seemed to come to an abrupt close following Ronni's comment. The application has some interesting elements to it such as Fast Clean which suggested that there is over 6 GB of junk, including foreign languages and lots of preference files for long disused applications, etc. Anti-Theft, Duplicate Finder and Undelete look interesting. Does anyone have anything good to say about it? The other burning questions in my mind are: Has anyone tracked down just what it is about it that may causes the sort of problems that Ronni came up against? and has the MacKeeper people had anything to say on the matter? Re: MacKeeper
Thanks Daniel, I am always nervous about applications that can do all so to speak, they are generally too good to be true (safe in this case). I had no problems deleting it with CleanApp and using Ronni's post as a guide I could not find any trace of it afterwards, but then again I only tried the Fast Clean and kept well away from the Anti Virus thing which I think can be the most destructive thing you can install particularly if you already have one running. Any program/company that advertises the way it does, and has pop ups on some of the sites I use (even though I have pop ups turned off) doesn't get my vote. Also, the software does seem to put its hooks through the system a lot. Something I don't particularly care for. And, lastly if you do a search for MacKeeper pop ups you'll see a lot of reviews on people that have a) installed it and found it not good and b) had trouble removing it. Here for example is one thread on it:- https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2786697?start=0tstart=0 There's just something about that software I can't quite put my finger on it,...but I personally don't like it. The threat of it doing more damage then good can also be a bit of a worry. ;o) Again, this is just my personal opinion. The second part to your question, is sort of in the answer above. In that it installs components all over the system. And the removal tool doesn't seem to get them all. So you have to do lots to get rid of it. That is part the problem. Hope that helps a little. Re: Epson Stylus Photo TX700W MFP Wireless Printer
Scanning old BW negatives can be easily done without expensive scanners, I saw a demonstration of this a few years ago at a WAGS computer group meeting and the results were impressive. It consisted of a standard type scanner and software and a wooden box painted white inside with a light bulb fitted inside. The box can be made to the desired size but some investigation may be needed to determine the best light bulb to use. It worked a treat. When you type in a name, it is translated by the database of *your* DNS server, which got the data from *its* DNS server, which got the data from *its* DNS server, and this chain continues all the way back to the authoritative server. You do not directly query the authoritative server, because then the whole world of computers would be hitting large servers (like .com) a squillion times per second (which would be slow, costly, and less reliable for your ISP). Instead, you query your own DNS server, which gives you the latest copy of the info it has. But this isn't always the absolute latest information. Occasionally this is bad (because you're out of date compared to the authoritative servers) and occasionally it's good (because corrupt records in the authoritative servers get corrected before they reach you). Thanks for all the advice, as it turns out I eventually got it to mount again via Target Mode and recover all the data from there I did a full install of Tiger and it has been behaving itself for the 2 days. I have upgraded G4 Powerbook to OS 10.5 but it wont allow me to log on using the original user name and password. Booting on the Installer disk and using the Change Password utility wont change the password it comes up with a prompt saying that original password wont be unlocked and to use Key Chain to change it, the problem being that you cant log in to do anything. Re: password problem
Thanks Rob and all. Tried that Rob and the permissions repair did find a problem but still no joy. Taking a step back, the 2 initial attempts to upgrade the installation failed which left me nowhere so the upgrade was done in Target mode via my G5 iMac, I have tried every combination of user name and password belonging to the PowerBookPro and the iMac--on the off chance that the installation process had adopted the iMac KeyChain, all to no avail. All files on the PowerBookPro is accessible in Target mode. I am thinking that transferring all the files to another disk and having another shot at running the Installer is the next option. Re: Syncing multi iPhoto libraries to iPod
Before I commit to buying iPhoto Library Manager will I be able to synchronise the iPhoto libraries in my MacBook and G5 (OS 10.5.2)? Regards, Adrian. Recently, using iPhoto Library Manager, I have divided the iPhoto into three separate libraries. Now the syncing only works on the original iPhoto library and ignores the others. Hi Lloyd, Using your iPhoto Library Manager: iPod folders allow you to sync photos from across multiple libraries to your photo capable iPod. iTunes will allow you to sync photos either from your iPhoto library or a folder of pictures, but when syncing from an iPhoto library, it will only sync from the currently active library, meaning you can't mix and match photos from different libraries. What an iPod folder does is allow you to specify different albums that you want to sync with your iPod from any or all of your libraries. iPhoto Library Manager will automatically copy the photos from those albums into a folder you specify (the iPod folder), putting each album of photos inside a subfolder. You can then tell iTunes to sync with that folder instead of with iPhoto, which will put the pictures from the albums you selected onto your iPod. Unregistered users are limited to a single iPod Folder with a maximum of 100 photos at a time. http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/Documentation/iPLM/pgs/ipod_folder_about.html Cheers, Ronni -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a 20 min recording of a now deceased aunt talking about her family history, unfortunately the original tape recording was of poor quality--lots of rumbling type background noise and she was a little distant from the microphone, I have converted it to a AIFF file via iMic SpinDoctor, unfortunately the editing tools in SpinDoctor are not up to the task of cleaning it up it. Can anyone give me a clue on software that I can use for this purpose please? Adrian P.S. thanks for the responses regarding the external drive. Re: USB 2 v FireWire
Thanks to all for the info. May I say that its all rather overwhelming. Regards Adrian [EMAIL PROTECTED] On 10/03/2008, at 12:45 PM, Robert Howells wrote: SATA replaced ATA legacy technology as the next generation internal bus interface for hard drives. The SATA interface is more streamlined than ATA and provides serial architecture for greater speed than the older parallel technology. SATA cables are narrow and can be up to three feet (1 meter) in length, whereas parallel cables are much wider and limited to a length of 18 inches (45.7 cm). With eSATA, the speed of SATA expands to encompass exterior storage solutions. While eSATA reaches transfer rates triple those of USB 2.0 and FireWire 400, it does have one drawback. eSATA requires its own power connector, Not totally correct ! There are some add on eSata Cards that can provide power to the eSata hard drive housing ( I have one ) instead of using a plug pack . Bob unlike the aforementioned interfaces. However, it is an excellent choice for external disk storage. Unlike USB and FireWire interfaces, eSATA does not have to translate data between the interface and the computer. This enhances data transfer speeds, while saving computer processor resources and eliminating the need for an extra off-load chip. Bear in mind, though, that eSata will only be a little faster than FW800 (which current MBP's have built in), so you may want to consider whether the price of the additional card is worth it when compared to a FW800 drive if you have a FW800 capable MBP. Re: scanning negatives
I have seen it done by constructing a small box of Melamine with a globe inside, masking it to suit the size of the negative and sitting it on top of a scanner and It worked a treat. The CEO at my favourite charity is having a serious problem with applications quitting unexpectedly. Having spent a couple of hours las night producing a document in Word, with the Auto Save set to 1 minute intervals and physically clicking the Save button, Word just quit and the document vanished off the server, where it was saved to and had been closed and re-opened a couple of times since creating it, there is definitely no trace of it anywhere. He tells me that, except for the disappearing document, the same thing happens with Safari and FileMaker (not convinced about that one.) I expect that the stock answer is to not use Word, but has anyone out there heard of anything like this happening elsewhere? Office X 10.1.4, iMac 800 Flat Pane, Tiger (10.4.1) connected to an X Server also running Tiger, I have installed thelatest server update this morning and run Diskworrior over it, no problems found. I will appreciate any other information and suggestions thanks, Regards, Adrian

One of the favourite things it does is to corrupt documents by destroying tables. We also occasionally have disappearing documents (and folders). I'd suggest trying copying documents locally, editing them and then putting them back on the server. At least for a while to see whether it improves things. If Safari and Filemaker are quitting though, there may be another problem. I'd also suggest checking the system log files to see if they can shed any light, and try memtestosx from http:// www.memtestosx.org/ on his machine overnight to see if there are any RAM problems. If you're brave, you can try suggesting using NeoOffice/J or OpenOffice instead of Word, but changing mindsets is a much more difficult task to accomplish than changing machines :) Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge http://public.xdi.org/=Shayfnord http://sungroper.asn.au/ -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] WAMUG is powered by Stalker CommuniGatePro
