Re: ICal WA holidays subscription

Hi Rob
Here is the email I sent (by coincidence exactly one year ago today) regrading
WA holidays. It does not include school holidays.

Remember you could have found it via the archives (link at the bottom of every
list email)

I guess this article was meant as a tribute to Jobs but this comes over as
extremely silly and pointless - attributing the advances of IT and Jobs'
important role in it - as a 'gift' to 'the church'.
This could equally be seen as a gift to devil worship cults, atheist groups,
digital photographers, or even door knob appreciation societies...

Hi David
I've just tried it on my Mac and have confirmed that iMovie 8 and
iMovie HD (6) can import live DV from the camera (from the lens not
just from tape) via Firewire. Camera is a Sony miniDV handycam.

I have a video camera (not the recording sort, but it outputs DV

It thinks it is streaming out a DV signal, what I am trying to do is
record that signal on my Mac.

Tried imovie but no joy. It appears to want to have a video player
attached (ie the player part of the common or garden camera). In
fact all the references I have read assume you have a recording
attached, not a continuous stream you are trying to intercept.
"help" also no help.

Is it a case of the imovie settings? Do I need a different app to
capture streaming digital video?

Thanks for any tips,

Re: HTML

2011-01-27 Thread Warren Jones
Hi Adrian
I've had a good look using some developer tools in Firefox and Safari to try to
find out what's going on.
As far as I can tell so far
There seems to be no bug in the counter code you're inserting.
There is a minor bug in the CSS file a width value without a unit i.e. "100"
instead of "100%" or "100px" but this shouldn't be affect this problem -
outside your control since you're using iWeb.
Firefox seems to be ignoring the inline style info for the and some
s for reasons I can't fathom yet. This is affectinght e background images
- again outside your control
Safari reports errors of 'self-closing'

Re: HTML

2011-01-27 Thread Warren Jones

I'm happy to check it out if you put the code back in. (maybe
duplicate the page and publish as a different file name if you don't
want to practice on the live one)

Photobooth bug

A friend just pointed this one out.

Take a photo in Photobooth, then select File/Reveal on Finder...
The filename given to this file both on his iMac and my MBP is "Photo on
2011-12-30 at XX:XX.jpg" - Apple is a year ahead of itself.
(Yes our system dates are correct)

[tested on my OSX 10.6.5 on 30 Dec 2010]

Anyone else have the same bug? Does it exist on 10.5.8?

PS google shows other people had the same problem last year too from about Dec

Re: Safari freezes

2010-10-19 Thread Warren Jones

Hi Peter
I had a very similar problem at home too.
It has to do with Safari 5.0.1 & later "prefetching" DNS lookups and
your router or your ISP's DNS server not handling the number of requests

Two options
 - use another DNS server e.g. 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 (google's open
servers) instead of your ISP's.

 - use Terminal to disable Safari's prefetching...

defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean
false

Apple Support article...

Changing the defaults seemed to work for me.

Re: Macs too difficult for tax persons

2010-07-10 Thread Warren Jones

Yes many, many years ago (the same year they released the win version or the
year after) the ATO said they were working on a Mac version. And we're still
waiting. I can only assume that monkey behind the keyboard still hasn't hit the
right combination of keystrokes yet.

It's strange how when it comes to collecting money the ATO made Mac compatible
software for submitting business activity statements (BAS) but when it comes to
handing back money (most people's annual tax return) they've been ignoring us
Mac users for years.

I'll keep doing mine the old-fashioned way (pen & paper form) until they
release a Mac version in protest. Though I guess it means that a copy of Fusion
or Parallels and Windows would be 100% tax deductible if submitting tax returns
is the only thing it's used for in the year of purchase.

I've never understood why they can't just make a standards-compliant web-based
version of eTax available.

Re: New Apple gear

2009-03-04 Thread Warren Jones
It's always fun to do some comparisons to find out Apple Australia's
cut for the value that they add.

The entry Mac Pro is US$2499 which converts - using today's exchange
rate (via Calculator) - to A$3581.43.

Apple Aus sell that same MacPro for A$4499. Removing GST gives $4090.

Result: an additional profit to Apple Aus of $508 in addition to Apple
US's profit.

Similar profits...
Japan (allowing 5% GST) Y17236 = A$267
UK (allowing 15 % VAT) UKP117.6 = A$258

Hmmm

Hi Pat

The web site may not have been hacked but possibly the domain name has

The current IP address of www.fruitipedia.com resolves to 69.64.147.16

Re: Firewire on a MacBook

2008-10-16 Thread Warren Jones
Yes Apple do some damn wonderful things. And they also do some damn
stupid things.

Removing firewire is ridiculous for many reasons.
Maybe they're abandoning it for USB 3 eventually. (though I'd say USB3 will not have some of the features of FW that
make it great)

Maybe they're just cheap.
Maybe their research indicated no-one used FW on a MB.
Maybe they just can't afford the 25c per port fee to the inventors ;-)
Maybe I don't have Steve Jobs' vision.

and FW800 only in the MBP?? and no included FW400 convertor.

In any case they're futzing with an important part of the IT & AV
industries. They *should* come clean as to their intentions and future
for firewire.

My other gripes regarding the latest laptop announcements...
Keyboards: I like the full size, concave keys on my current Powerbook.
I'm not sure about the "toy" keyboard with flat key tops and spaces.
But maybe I could learn to live with it.

Glossy display only - no matte - yuk.
Price: Yeah, yeah, falling Aussie dollar, hard economic times. MBPs
start at $US1999 in US and $3199 in Aus.

No included video connection adapters

US$1999 = A$3000.60 (as of today) and add 10% GST = $3300 which means
it's not too bad at the moment. But normally Apple Aus hedges the
currency fairly strongly in its favour and seems to rarely alter
prices to reflect a strengthening A$.
Though even in the US, people are complaining about the prices. Maybe
Apple are counting on their increasing market share to justify their
prices (whatever the market can bear)

I normally hate comparing too much Apples with oranges, but other
manufacturers seem to make, import and sell similar specced laptops at
half Apple's price. And I won't even mention LCD displays. Sure they
don't have quite the style or the OS.

Re: External Hard Drive

2007-09-10 Thread Warren Jones
I'm actually in a slightly similar situation (details below) but to
answer your question...
My understanding is that Macs will READ NTFS formatted drives but not
write to them without extra software.
Most external drives would probably be default formatted for FAT32
which is another PC standard. Macs can read and write FAT16 & FAT32.
If you need to move this drive to/from a PC then this would be the
easiest format to use. But if it's only staying on a Mac then you'd
be better off to reformat for HFS extended Or HFS for older Mac OSes.
If you're after reasonable speed then an external firewire drive
would be good but if you're after max speed then replacing the
internal drive would be better.

Hope this helps.

I'm currently looking at getting extra but secure storage for my
wife's and my Macs (iBook/Powerbook on wireless). I'm looking at a
RAID1 drive and thinking of sharing it via the new airport extreme
which I'd also have to buy. A firewire 400/800 might be handy if I
needed speed.

The best one I've seen so far is the taurus

interface-hd-enclosure-usbfw400fw800>

or
<http://zytech.com.au/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?
Screen=PROD&Product_Code=ENTaurus>

Has anyone tried this RAID? Or tried sharing any drive via new
airport/usb?
Any better alternatives? Or would I be better off taking the extra
big price step and going for a NAS solution?

Re: Warning - Quicktime 7.2 will not play web based QT movies

2007-07-15 Thread Warren Jones
It's not all web based QT content but there are many reports of bugs
regarding the latest versions of QT on Apple's support forums.

http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=122

There may be some workarounds suggested in these forums that may help
you depending on your exact problem.

And if your problem is related to Flash animations
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1042462&tstart=0

Looks like Apple have rushed the last couple of versions out the door.

My reason for looking and posting in the forums is I've discovered
there are also huge bugs in QT for Windows 7.2 (and slightly less so
7.1.6) esp regarding HREF tracks which I use a lot for work.
Extremely annoying for what should be a world class product that so
many people depend on!

Re: Daylight savings testing

2007-03-02 Thread Warren Jones

I think you've missed my point on this one Shay.
My point was: why didn't my clock roll back the second daylight
saving should have finished (03:00 WDT 25 Mar)? And secondly, why
does my time zone say WST instead of WDT?

Derek said that in his testing it too didn't roll back when it should
but did within an hour.

I repeated my test and left it for quite a while (> 2h) and it still
hadn't rolled back.

I'm aware of what you said about NTP (my sentence actually said the
same thing as you) and I had made a very similar comment on this list
to someone else previously.

cheers
woz

PS On further testing just now and using the date -u command to check
for time differences from UTC, I see that If you set the clock to
anything past 02:00 on 25 Mar, it assumes that DS has ended. So to do
my test properly I assume I'd have to set the clock to 01:59, and
wait 61 mins instead of setting it to 02:59 and waiting 1 minute. So
I'll therefore conclude that the end of DS will work as it should.
But it would be nice if Apple displayed WDT when it should instead of
always WST.

I would have expected the DS zone changes to be independent of the

Comments?

The Network Time Protocol (NTP) simply synchronises the computers
idea of what UTC (ie Greenwich Mean Time) is. Applying Timezone
changes to UTC to work out what the local computer's time is is
left to each individual computer's OS. Thus not being connected to
NTP shouldn't make any difference for purposes of testing the
daylight savings changeover.

SYDNEY, February 18, 2007 08:56pm (AEDT) - The Prime Minister of

John Howard was born on the 26th of July, 1939. Howard is
Australia's second longest serving Prime Minister and leader of
the Liberal Party in Australia.

Howard was born at, a suburb of Sydney Australia. He attended
Earlwood Primary School and then Canterbury Boys' High School.
Howard graduated from the University of Sydney with a bachelor of
Laws and in 1961.

Prime Minister John Howard was sworn Australian PM in 1996 and has
subsequently won the next 3 elections, being in 1998, 2001 and
2004. He is considered a conservative politician and has described
himself as "the most conservative leader the Liberals have ever had".

Prime Minister Howard was a strong supporter of the war with Iraq
and has been criticized for blindly following the lead of the
United States president George W Bush. Australian troops entered
Iraq with the United States and British lead force. This became an
unpopular decision for Howard, particularly after no weapons of
mass destruction was found in Iraq (the main reason for starting a
war with Iraq and ousting the leader Suddam Husein).

John Howard and his wife Janette have three children together;
Melanie, Tim and Richard Howard.

Has anyone done some proper testing of the new patch released last week?

After applying the patch, and clicking on Perth instead of Tokyo I

Anyway, to check the end of the DS, I disabled NTP and set my clock

The WA DS change is only going to affect abt 10-15% of Apple Aus's market which
is a tiny part of Apple's market. I'd be surprised if they can devote too much
resources to it quickly considering testing is a big part of any update -
though I'm hopeful but doubtful there will be any patch very soon.

I'm sure there will be an update at one stage though.

I think I read somewhere that there was 6 months advance notice for the Comm
Games DST change.

Re: Daylight Saving

2006-11-28 Thread Warren Jones
NTP (time) servers give times in GMT and it's not our absolute time that's
changing. It's our timezone that's changing.

There is an Apple support forum discussion going on the topic but no definite
answer yet.
One reported "recommended solution from Apple WA" is to change the time zone
city to Osaka, Japan on the day and then revert to Perth when DS finishes.

There is also a non-Apple patch that someone had made
 - read the readme file - it just replaces
the MacOS Aus/Perth time zone file and should work OK except that it BREAKS
iCal as it has it's own Time zone settings.

I've also contacted Apple Aus directly. The guy I spoke to had no idea but
checked with a senior technician. Apparently a WA Govt dept has also been
inquiring too as to Apple's recommended solution. I have a case number but no
answer yet. There was mention of a possible patch from Apple, though I think
we'd be lucky to see anything by the weekend. Noone was given much chance to do
much preparation for this DS trial. Maybe a few calls of encouragement to Apple
couldn't hurt.

So I'd suggest that changing to the Japan TZ on Sunday would be the best option
so far for most non-unix experts.

Hi Woz

If it doesn't you can try a splitter or switch, something like this:

Some switches are in-line too and can even allow TV connections etc.

Apple discriminates against Australians

Neglignet recall behaviour down under

By Charlie Demerjian

Tuesday 05 September 2006, 15:29

APPLE APPEARS TO BE DISCRIMINATING against customers in Australia
over the
battery recall .

There is no excuse for the behavior it is showing, it sold them
defective
products, and now will not fix the problems in the same way as they
do US

customers.

If you live in the US, they will mail you a new battery ASAP,
Australia,
find a dealer, bring it in, wait a few weeks, and have a g'day
mate, hope it

doesn't explode before you get it here.

Take a look at these screenshots, taken just before midnight PST on
Monday
September 4th. The first shows where the battery recall screen
takes you if

you are in the US, the second if you have the misfortune of being
Australian, and possibly a resident of several other countries.

US

Australia

If you are in the US, you\re asked for your shipping info, and send
you a
new one with a mailer for the old one in short order. From what I
understand
it now pretty efficient about it, even after a few early teething
problems
 . Either
way, you

get the new one before you have to return the old.

That is the US though, in Australia, you appear to have big
problems. The
same screen takes you to a service centre locater where you are
supposed to
find your nearest dealer and bring the batteries there. According
to the FAQ
 ,
you will
get a new one in four to six weeks, maybe, with no battery to use
in the

mean time.

Our source in Australia called Apple to confirm this was indeed the
case,
and was told he would have to make two trips to an Apple service
centre to
resolve the problem, presumably one to drop the battery off,
another to pick
up the replacement a month later. Considering the geography of
Australia,
this can be a less than appealing proposition for many Apple
customers down
under, and to add insult to injury, our intrepid correspondent does
not have

a car available.

Does it get worse? Of course. The same person has a wife who
unfortunately
had a recalled MacPro battery in the last round. Guess what they
did then?
No points if you say they mailed out a battery, that is indeed the
case.

Apple was notified of this problem by the affected person on August
25, and
more than a week later, there is no resolution. The local Apple
dealer has
indicated that he will help our correspondent, but that is just the
kindness

of a local dealer, not company policy.

What we have here is a large company that sold a dangerous defective
product, and will not take appropriate action to resolve these
problems. The
fact that Apple do take the appropriate action in the US, and they
did it
before in Australia says it has the capabilities, the
infrastructure, and

the ability to do so again. For some reason, Apple is abdicating
responsibility this time.

If they make it easy, like they do in the US, people will be much more
likely to exchange these hazardous batteries. If they make the cost
of doing
so 3/4s the cost of a new battery, the two taxi trips will cost the
letter
writer $150AU, a new battery is $199AU, then what are the odds that
it will

happen?

Much as I hate to say it, this is the reason class action lawsuits
are born,
and while lawyers are icky, they do serve a purpose on occasion.
Apple has
shown the capability to fix the problem, was warned over a week
ago, and has

Battery exchange - why second class service in Australia?

2006-08-31 Thread Warren Jones

My PB's battery is affected.

Looking at Apple's battery recall web page, it's clear there is a two
class level of service being offered by Apple...

In the US, Canada, all of Europe and Japan, Apple customers simply
fill in a web form and Apple will ship a replacement right to your
door and include a prepaid shipping label to return the old battery.

Apple's Australian customers are classed with those of "other" third
world countries and expect them to get their battery to their service
provider and pay for petrol, parking and/or postage and packing as
well as their valuable time. On contacting one service dept in Perth
they say I have to first drop in the battery and then, when a
replacement arrives, go back again and pick up the battery. Losing
mobility in the meantime.

Dear Apple: Why the different level of service, considering the extra
we Aussies pay above the conversion from $US and GST?

Re: Genealogy software

2006-08-04 Thread Warren Jones

The genealogy software topic occasionally pops its head up here...

Reunion <http://www.leisterpro.com/> seems to be the software of
choice for Mac users but its not free. A free fully functional demo
(only limited by number of people) is available from their site.

I've used it for a long time. For an example of web pages that
Reunion can produce, check out my web site.

<http://homepage.mac.com/warrenj/>

However, there are alternatives...
mode=basic&action=search&str=genealogy&plt%5B%5D=macosx&x=0&y=0>

with the main ones being MacFamilyTree and Heredis.

I'd suggest doing a good comparison of these and read some reviews.

I'm looking for a car FM transmitter/recharger for my iPod mini and

Anyone have any experience with these or in comparison to other brands?

Greetings all

The ABC are currently running a survey on broadband (link from their

(They seem to be evaluating the demand for extra video content on

On about the 4th page they ask what format video you prefer but give
no option for Quicktime!

(Options are "Real", "Windows Media", "Flash", "Don't know")
Luckily they do provide an "Other" option and you can type in
whatever you prefer.

If you can spare a few mins to complete this survey and enter
"Quicktime" in the "Other" box.

Apple readying iTunes 4.8

A new version of Apple's iTunes software will reportedly boast security
enhancements and handle the syncing of user contacts and calendars to
and from iPods.

Apple Computer in the coming weeks is expected to introduce a new
version of its iTunes jukebox software for both the Mac and PC.

The new version will pack a maintenance and security update and may
also contain added support for a new wave of international music
stores, now seemingly overdue.

Additionally, company documents indicate that iTunes 4.8 will take over
the responsibilities of transferring contacts and calendars to a user's
iPod. Previously these functions were handled by Apple's iSync
application.

According to sources, the software could debut as early as the first
week of May.

10.3.9 is out

2005-04-16 Thread Warren Jones

via Software Update - 51 MB

combo updater at <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300967>

Improvements

This update offers many reliability and compatibility improvements.
These are just a few of the enhancements and improvements included:

Stickies
	▪ Addresses an issue in which Stickies could unexpectedly quit when
creating a new note.

▪ Addresses an issue in which new Stickies are invisible.

	▪ Stickies windows can now be minimized (an issue with Mac OS X
10.3.4 through 10.3.8).

Safari
	▪ Accessing certain websites, such as msnbc.com, mail.yahoo.com,
ticketmaster.com, and others, no longer displays a "bad server
response" alert that could occur in Safari.

	▪ Addresses an issue in which "safe downloads" files are not
automatically opened after downloading.

	▪ SSL webpages (pages with URLs that start with "https://";) load
faster in Safari.

	▪ Adds some important Verisign root certificates to Safari, allowing
you to connect to certain secure websites that you might not have been
able to surf before.

	▪ Adds other trusted root certificates to Safari, such as VISA and
RSA.

Finder
	▪ Addresses an issue in which copied files could become fragmented
(but still usable) when you copy more than one file at the same time in
the Finder.

	▪ Addresses a rare issue in which a file could become damaged when
copying to a FAT16- or FAT32-formatted volume.

	▪ Improves reliability when mounting (making available) a disk image
that's larger than 4.7 GB.

More
	▪ Addresses slow vertical tracking and intermittent trackpad behavior
on PowerBook G4 12-inch 1.5GHz, 15-inch 1.67/1.5GHz, and 17-inch
1.67GHz computers.

	▪ Adds an "Apple Internal 56k Modem (v.32)" modem choice that you can
use if you have difficulty using Verizon's Airfone Jet Connect service.

	▪ Addresses an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.6 and later in which the
Calculator window won't appear if the Speak Button Pressed or Speak
Total options are enabled.

	▪ Fixes an issue at the login window, where clicking the small space
just below the bottom user account picture would produce this alert:
"Internal Error *** -[NSCF Array objectAtIndex:]: index(-1) beyond
bounds (X)" (where X is the number of user accounts shown).

	▪ Addresses an issue in which the startup time in Mac OS X 10.3.6
through 10.3.8 may be extended if a large number of PostScript fonts
are installed.

	▪ If your PowerBook G4 sometimes wakes up with a kernel panic,
installing this update may help.

	▪ Addresses a data loss issue that could occur when syncing your
iDisk at the same time that .Mac servers are experiencing heavy usage.
	▪ Avoids a potential Mail issue if the application is running when
Daylight Savings Time changes.
	▪ Addresses some formatting issues that could occur when replying to
HTML messages in Mail.

Make sure when you add the driver you choose Epson USB from the drop

Epson printer install prob

2004-05-18 Thread Warren Jones
New epson Stylus photo R310 to either of PB G4 or PM G4, OS X 10.3.3
via USB

Installed driver from CD and also the latest version from internet.
When I go to add the printer in the printer setup utility it gives the
message "driver not installed". I've reinstalled multiple times with
reboots as required by the installer.

I can't find much helpful info on web.
any ideas?

thanks

Re: Accessing website harbottle

2004-04-07 Thread Warren Jones
Looking at the source of the page it contains a silly javascript
(checking that screen size is at least 800x600) and form to redirect
to...

https://www.harbottleonpremise.com.au/alm/index.jsp

Going to this URL seems to work.

Can anyone access the site
<http://www.harbottleonpremise.com.au/>

I can't using the latest Explorer (128 bit) or Safari.

It enables us to order liquor etc on-line.

Their tech support hasn't been able to help. It's about the only way
for us

to check prices.

Re: Increase in SPAM mail to .Mac

2004-04-03 Thread Warren Jones
Yes I've noticed similarly just in the last day or so, though not quite
3 per 10 min.

Hi All!

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

I'm just curios to see if anyone else has noticed an increase in spam
mail to mac.com (for those that use it.) I now find I'm getting about
3 every 10mins and it's just to that address. Has anyone else noticed
the same. I barely use this address, and looked to see if I have it
posted anywhere the net,.. well bar yahoo it's not really anywhere.

Thanks. Look forward to see what others are finding. (Can send direct
to me to save the list if preferred.)

I agree but don't expect that in our lifetime.
The US "adopted" the metric system in 1866 and was supposed to
transition (by act of congress) over a 10 year period from 1975.
