iPhone 4 External Microphone and Tripod Mount
Hi all, I'm running a project with my YAC creating video projects entirely using iPhones. Hoping someone can recommend tripod mounts and external microphones for the iPhone. Preferably someone local (we're on a short timeframe). Re: Recording voiceover in iMovie 09 - external microphone
Hello all Many thanks for all the suggestions and hints. I have done lots of research and learnt heaps about usb mics!!! I borrowed an iMic from a friend and tried out my very basic Logitec mic but was not happy with the sound quality. I have now settled on a Blue Yeti which was released last year to rave reviews. It does just about everything but cook dinner!!! Probably over the top for what I need. I located one in Melb and am now having great fun recording the voiceover for my first iMovie DVD. Re: Recording voiceover in iMovie 09 - external microphone
Hello All Many thanks for your very helpful suggestions and advice. I am now trying to decide whether to use my existing Logitec microphone (fairly basic) and purchase a Griffin iMic (thanks John) - or to upgrade to a better quality USB microphone. I intend to make lots of digital stories on DVD that will require voiceovers so it could be a good investment. The USB microphones that have come up in my research are: Blue Snowball Samson G-Track Samson C01U MXL.006 I would welcome any feedback/recommendations on these - or any any other USB microphones (for voiceovers) that members may have used. Re: External microphone
Yes James, there is a lot of difference in their input levels. The internal mic registers well at 50% input volume, and records normally. The external mic doesn't register with normal voice, but will register a loud voice. I can record with the external mic via the line in, but the level is almost inaudible, even with input volume right up to 100% in sound prefs. With Garage Band the external mic gets much better sound levels for voice - at 100% input level, a voice track is usable (although not loud). If I switch to the Audio In app and record (with input level at 100%), voice is barely audible. Definitely there, but barely audible. Glenn. External microphone
Hi Wamug, I've got a new Sony ECM-C115 external microphone, but not having much joy from it. Recording using the built-in microphone is fine. However when I plug the external mic into the audio-in plug on the back of my iMac G5 (PowerPC): - input in Sound Prefs switched over to Line In - input volume is turned up (max) - input level shows 60-70% - in the recording, the sound is very-very-soft sound levels. Am I missing something? Re: External microphone
Hi Glenn, I doubt this is relevant, however I used to have the same problem in Windows XP which turned out to be that the mic port was configured for use as a subwoofer port. Once I disabled the subwoofer option then the mic worked as per normal. I have never owned anything other than an iBook and MacBook so I don't know what the ports are like on the iMac, but is it possible that the audio is setup for surround sound? Re: External microphone
Regarding the pre-amp, yes, the ECM-C115 comes with one and I have been using it. It responds with a small flash of the diode when switched on (which is what the manual says to expect). Glenn. Re: External microphone
Hi Glenn, Like most other people, my first suspicious would have been Line In versus Microphone In (i.e., pre-amp issue), but you wrote that the input level is showing 60-70% already. Here is a little app that you might use to compare your Internal and external microphones: http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive/Archive/gst/snd/audio-in-103.hqx Is there any visual difference in their input? External Microphone
My friends overseas have told me that my eMac's internal microphone is not very good using Skype. So last week I bought a Logitech headphone microphone set. It plugs into the Audio and Headphone sockets. I have an eMac 1.25Mhz using OSX 10.3.9 However when I switch to external line-in microphone in System Preferences, there is no sound in. The volume indicator is dead. But the headphones work fine. So I went to the local markets today and bought a cheap line-in microphone. The story is the same. Zero volume level. Am I missing something here or would I be better off using a USB microphone ? Regards, Stephen Chape
Re: External Microphone
When I tried using the internal microphone it had an echo that resulted in very poor quality sound at the listeners end. Yes, I had the same problem. You need a USB Logitech headphone and mic and you will have no probs. External microphone for iMac
-- I have a Spanish language learning CD running on my 500 MHz iMac, but it needs an external microphone plugged in for some uses. Re: External microphone for iMac
this is were I shoot my self down in flames.. the iMacs arround and just after the 5 flavours era (so yours would probably fall in to that) have a Apple PlainTalk mic jack this uses Apple's own PlainTalk condenser mic this uses a special slightly longer mini pin that powers the mic (Condenser mics have a charged plate so require a power supply) as such you would need to locate one here on WAMUG or e-bay I can have alook through our dungeon of obsolete equipment at work and I might find one you can have for only the effort of picking it up from UWA. I don't recall any iMacs prior to the G5 units having external microphone/audio ports assume you have checked that the mic preferences in both system (and/or control panels if in classic) and in the application match as internal mic? failing that a USB mic should work or a standard mic through USB audio in/out unit like the iMic (I have a spare iMic one you could try and/or buy) I only had hit and miss success with generic PC shop USB mics on classic though and have never tried them on OSX -- I have a Spanish language learning CD running on my 500 MHz iMac, but it needs an external microphone plugged in for some uses.
