Re: I tunes catastrophes
I haven't done this myself, but I suggest that you could try a drag and drop from the backup copy from time machine to your music folder. You may need to re establish the connection again by pointing iTunes to that folder. Holding down the option or command key as you open iTunes. I can check on my mac later and see if this is the correct process and if I can set up these instructions in a step wise fashion as Ronnie would do. Do you have Time Machine? I told Time Machine not to back up iTunes due to partition size on external hard drive. I copied the iTunes Music folder manually to a different partition. Hello Andrew, Your iTunes Music Folder is on a different partition to your Time Machine backup, so it won't be backed up by Time Machine. I wouldn't recommend this as you are putting files and data that are not being backed up onto the Time Machine drive. I would prefer to use a drive that has no other function other than to hold backup data as your Time Machine drive. Use another Drive to store files data that you don't want to backup. Hi Martin, Have you tried copying your whole music folder which is in your Users/your directory/Music/iTunes, and pasting it in your external drive. I believe you can point iTunes to this 'new' location so that it can play the songs from the external drive. What I do not know is how to sync the 2 folders on you main drive and the external one. Re: i-tunes to external harddrive
Hi Martin, Backup up your iTunes library is as simple as copying your 'iTunes' folder. For instance, you can open your 'Music' folder and drag-and-drop the 'iTunes' folder icon onto your external hard disk icon. Of course, this will take a very long time because you have 400 GB of music, and maintaining this backup would require that you copy the whole 400 GB every time you make a backup. Therefore, you may prefer to use backup (sync) software instead. Backup and sync software works by detecting changes, and only needs to back up the new/changed files. If you ever need to recover your iTunes library, you can simply drag the backed up 'iTunes' folder back to your Music folder. Alternatively, if you wanted to point iTunes to use the external disk instead of your internal disk, open iTunes and hold then down the Option key as soon as possible. iTunes should ask you whether you want to Quit, Create a New Library, or Open A Library. You can choose Open... and select your external iTunes folder. iTunes will remember this setting. Re: I-tunes still not working
Hi Martin, A few things come to mind: - Sometimes when I've had external HDs not show up unplugging and re-plugging the firewire cable has helped - worth a try. - Open disk utility on the iMac and see if it finds the the eMac's disk. - Run system profiler on the iMac (open about this mac and click more info or go to Applications/Utilities/System Profiler) and look under Hardware, Firewire, and see if the eMac's disk is showing up. Let us know what it shows. - Do you have any other firewire device you can try on both computers, in turn, just to check that the firewire ports ARE working on both machines. Another alternative, if you find you have problems with one or the other of the firewire ports, would be to connect the two computers with an ethernet cable (obviously the eMac would need to be normally booted, not in target mode) enable file sharing and transfer the files over the network connection. Hello Martin Please be aware that some early iMacs cannot support Target Disk Mode. There is a list of the capable machines here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661 . There are other ways to do what you want though. But I suggest you solve the T mode dilemma first. Hi Martin, To use firewire transfer, you need to have started one one the computers in Target mode - that way it just shows up as an external firewire drive on the other machine. I Tunes update
Hi all, having been away a few weeks I've just allowed all the new updates to install (OSX, 10.3.9)... I now can't open I Tunes from the dock? Have trashed the 'alias', created a new one but can't even open I Tunes from the applications folder?! Is this an issue because of the updates, I would imagine the updates are for Tiger or is that not a drama? Any help much appreciated, Ken Jackson

Is this an issue because of the updates, I would imagine the updates are for Tiger or is that not a drama? Any help much appreciated, Ken Jackson Hi Ken Have you tried repairing permissions. This is something that should always be done after most updates. To do this go to Applications/Utilities and open Disk Utility. There under First Aid there will be a button for Repair Permissions. Run this and it will go through and Scroll some unix info if it finds anything. Once finished, quit it and see if that works. If not, then also try deleting the iTunes preferences. This is located at HardDrive/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.itunes.plist. Drag that to the trash and then try to open iTunes again and see if that helps. If that doesn't work, then another thing to see if its a System wide error or just related to your account is to create another user, log into it and then see if iTunes has the same problem there as well. If iTunes opens fine on the second account then you know it's related to something to do with just your account. Whereas if it does the same thing under the newly created account then you know it's a system wide error. In that case iTunes may need re-installed. Hope that info helps. Enjoy! re: I Tunes update - Does your Safari app work?
Hi Ken and WAMUG folks. I've found that several machines I've updated with the security update 2005-007 (Panther), running 10.3.9, exhibit similar behaviour to what you are describing. I found the issue was with Mail, and Safari. I hadn't opened iTunes on the specific machines. But the problem sounds very similar. I recommend being very careful with the 007 security updates... There are numerous Apple forum discussion articles about people having similar problems. Especially with Mac OS X 10.3.9 (I've updated 10.4.2 machines, without issue). What most people notice first is that Safari or some other key Apple applications stop working. Check into your log files using an application such as Console. Check out what the most recent messages are. Also, check ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter log. I found on several machines that some core files were missing or upset, as mentioned in these logs. These included the Java Virtual Machine. Hence why the application wouldn't launch. E.g... --- dyld: /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari can't open library: /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/JavaVM --- Check out some of these URLs to see if the symptoms match: http://discussions.info.apple.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]@.68b6a437 http://discussions.info.apple.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]@.68b667f6 http://discussions.info.apple.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]@.68b6bc6f http://discussions.info.apple.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]@.68b6f349/ 24 (those lines might wrap, and any %20 text to be removed from the URL) In the particular cases I experienced at the end of last week, I found some careful work with Pacifist (to extract certain parts of installers) resolved the issues, without requiring an OS install. Keep in mind, that if you try to install, say, the Java update that is already installed, the Mac OS won't let you do it. But if you use Pacifist to do the work, you can force install any update. (So, be careful!) In total, the tools I used were: -Disk Utility -Pacifist, along with these Mac installers: -Mac OS X 10.3.9 installer -Java 1.42 update 1 -Java 1.42 update 2 -Java Startup update 10.3.9 Before you attempt any fix, first make sure this is the same problem, by looking at your log files. Secondly, back up any work before proceeding. Some authors in the Apple discussions recommend reinstalling the OS. This *wasn't* necessary. But some careful work with Pacifist, and some restarts in between, was. Your mileage may vary though. Hope that helps. Hi Ken take your cursor onto the iTunes in the dock, drag it out of the dock and just let go, it will disapear in a puff, go up to the menu bar go scroll down to applications and this will open your applications, look for iTunes( if theres the old and the new one trash the old one)and then just drag the new iTunes app. into the dock, that should do it ( hopefully) if it still doesn't work possibly someone else on the list, more knowledgeable than me will be able to help. seeya Bill On 22/08/2005, at 9:36 PM, kennyj wrote: Hi Bill, no I 'm new to OSX not sure how to do that?
