Hi Ronni

Thank you so much for your help.

I am delighted to report that your easy fix worked.
Will certainly keep your instructions close by in case the problem reoccurs.

Thanks again..

Hello John,

An easy fix (if it works), worth trying first, is:

Open System Preferences . Security
Check Require password to unlock each secure system preference. If
this doesn't solve the problem or the problem returns.

Try this:
Make sure you write down all your Network Settings as you may have
to re-configure your Network after deleting these files below.

In the Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder delete the following:

com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
NetworkInterfaces.plist
preferences.plist
com.apple.nat.plist

All these files will regenerate as necessary when the associated
system features are accessed.
If you're using Airport or Internet Sharing you'll have to
re-establish the appropriate settings, because these will have been
lost when the preferences files are removed.

This should permanently correct the problem.

Cheers,
Ronni

Your network settings have been changed .......

2009-07-19 Thread John Weekes

Hi Everyone

I feel That I should know the answer to this one but don't. I have
an eMac running Tiger 10.4.11

I am trying to upgrade my modem from ADSL to ADSL 2 and when
selecting Network from System Preferences a dialogue box appears
which reads

Your network settings have been changed by another application.

No matter how many times I click OK it r keeps returning. The only
way to get out of the loop is via Force Quit

My question . is there an easy fix or must the operating system
be reinstalled.

Or perhaps I should just stay with the old modem.

Thank you for any advice.

Re: Your network settings have been changed .......

2009-07-19 Thread Michael Hawkins

John,

I frequently have the same problem running Tiger 10.4.11 when trying to
connect using 3mobile.

I have wondered whether it is because my G3 PowerBook 400 is 9 years old and
still on its first set of batteries - I have to reset date and time
every-time I start the computer.

Sometimes the message goes away if I restart, and sometimes it does not
appear if I connect to the internet by using system preferences (network
connect) rather than the menu bar, but there was one time in which I had to
restart by using another username and re-setting preferences under that name
and then restarting in my preferred user name.

I know this hasn't helped much but at least now you know you're not an
orphan!

Regards,

Michael Hawkins.

Hello Michael,

From http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20080929133440824
Some users have reported an issue wherein, after applying Security
Update 2008-006 for Mac OS X 10.4.11, their systems repeatedly display
the message Your network settings have been changed by another
application. This message is sometimes accompanied by dropous in
wireless connectivity.

The potential fix is as follows:

Delete the following files from Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

• com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
• NetworkInterfaces.plist
• preferences.plist
• com.apple.nat.plist
then restart.

NB. I would suggest if you have many settings in your Network location
you should copy all of that information somewhere and then move,
instead of delete, the above files to your desktop until you know the
problem is fixed before you trash them so you can retrieve this
information later if needed.

The trouble is, when I click ok the dialogue box immediately returns,

I cant close the network window iether.

Does anyone know what is happening here?

Hi Jo,

This is what I did with the Belkin supplied to me by iiNet

Try this:
connect to your wireless modem via ethernet.
fire up your browser and in the url line type 10.1.1.1
hopefully you will get the login screen asking you for the password.
If so you should be able to configure it from here.

I can't remember what the default password was, something like admin
or password.

I do not understand some of the choices in Ownership Permissions.
All the partitions have

Owner = system - Read Write
Group = admin - Read Write
Others - Read Only

Except for my main partition which will only allow me to Read Write
if I have my Short Name as owner, if I change it to system I can Read

Is there anywhere I can find an 'idiots guide' to all this stuff
without forking out for an expensive book. I bought an IG to Windows

Asante offered useful advice.

Try the procedure below. Worked for me, so it's worth a try.
BTW: Very helpful people at Asante.

For issues in OS/10.x (including Panther), try the following procedure:

1) Turn off the Mac, Printer/PC and AsantéTalk.
2) Restart these in the same order, waiting for each device to fully
restart before moving to the next device.

Here's an interesting approach to try. It's all untested, of course,
but it might be fun to try, seeing as nothing else is working. Go to
http://developer.apple.com/networking/bonjour/ and download the new
Windows version of Bonjour. If it lives up to its promise, many of
these Mac-to-Windows networking issues should go away.

Group = admin - Read Write
Others - Read Only

Except for my main partition which will only allow me to Read Write
if I have my Short Name as owner, if I change it to system I can Read
Only.

Is there anywhere I can find an 'idiots guide' to all this stuff
without forking out for an expensive book. I bought an IG to Windows
XP and it is fairly useless. Maybe just a reflection of the crummy
software?

I have found that using Sharepoints on Macs helps make sure all is right
there, just to make sure.

It helps keep you at a safe distance from the permissions too.
As a rule windoze is nearly always to blame but dont get caught thinking
it always is ;)
Firewall software on the PC (which you should have!) might need checking
too.

Good Luck
Paul

Re: Mac/PC Network Settings

2005-05-09 Thread Rob Phillips
When we first bought the PC (Windows XP) it could connect to the
Macs on the network and print to the Typhoon 8 (LocalTalk) via
wireless to the router then via Ethernet and the AsanteTalk Adaptor.
The Adaptor does not support TCP/IP so I presume this was achieved
via AppleTalk.

We have made a few changes, some due to circumstances beyond our
control, so it is hard to pinpoint exactly when the Macs became
invisible to the PC. Now all communication is one way, the Macs can
connect to the PC but not vice versa. I suspect Windows XP Service
Pack 2 may be the culprit however I have upgraded the G4 from OS
10.3.4 to 10.3.8 and there have been security updates applied to the
PC and the Macs also. Plus we bought a new version of AVG for the PC
which updates all the time.

I have had problems with my Mac with Windows file sharing getting
turned off in System Prefs/Sharing. Also check
Applications/Utilities/Directory Access to make sure that SMB is
activated and has the correct Windows workgroup.

I found I can ping the Macs from the PC DOS prompt. Is there
anywhere in Windows XP where I can connect by typing in the IP
address? Or maybe a DOS command?

Today I tried the printer set up. After typing in the
\\server\printer I could connect to the server and set up the
printer (though I can't print). This then made the Home Folder
visible in 'My Network Places' but I can't find how to access the
other shared folders.

You need to set the printer sharing up to login to the Windows
machine before printing will work. I can't remember what magic I
used to do this. You could try http://127.0.0.1:631/ but the
printers part of this doesn't work for me at the minute.

In Sharing I have enabled Personal File Sharing, Windows Sharing,
Remote Login and Printer Sharing.

I do not understand some of the choices in Ownership Permissions.

Techo: Continually changing network settings

2004-09-22 Thread Rob Phillips

Hi,

I keep having troubles sending mail through my satellite setup at
home. This is related to the Maximum Transport Unit (mtu) settings.

To fix this, I need to use terminal to enter
sudo ifconfig en0 mtu 1432

The trouble is that the mtu value keeps getting changed back to 1500. :-?

I have also added this command to
System/Library/StartupItems/Network/Network, but this probably
doesn't help much because I hardly ever startup.

I have been mucking around with YASU and Control Freak. Are these
likely to cause my problem? What else?

TIA.

The trouble is that the mtu value keeps getting changed back to 1500.

Often, MTU is something that is auto-configured. However, firewalls and
routers are sometimes misconfigured with a block all mentality, and
this can break the MTU discovery mechanism. There are also other
phenomena that can interfere with automatic MTU adjustment. Perhaps the
best option would be to disable automatic MTU adjustment. One way to do
it is:

% sudo systctl -w net.inet.tcp.path_mtu_discovery=0

If this works, you can add it to a file called /etc/sysctl.conf (create
this file if it is missing). This means your setting will be remembered
when you reboot.

Apologies, there was a typo. Corrected version (I think):

% sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.path_mtu_discovery=0

I have not tested this solution as I have not had any problems with MTU
with Mac OS X yet.

To fix this, I need to use terminal to enter
 sudo ifconfig en0 mtu 1432

As much as I love the terminal, System Preferences in Panther has an
option for this which might be easier. In the Network prefPane, select
an ethernet interface - Ethernet tab - select Configure: Manually
(Advanced). I'm guessing it is retained across reboots etc.
