Hi Stuart,

Thanks for the explanation.
I'll leave the router alone.

Hi Walter,

There won’t be any problems with this. DHCP just assigns an IP
address to a computer when it requests one. It uses the MAC address
to assign it and if computer name is provided in the requests packet
it puts that into the computer name field. It can also be used with
DHCP Client Id. If the computer has a previous lease then the DHCP
server gives it back the same IP address. If you have a power outage
it loses all settings. The modem doesn’t use these settings for
lookup so it won’t cause an issue. Generally modems don’t pick up
Mac computer names, however if you are running Windows in Parallels
(or Fusion or VirtualBox or Bootcamp), then it will pick up the
name. Remember your Mac can have 4 separate MAC addresses if you are
running a Virtual Machine, one native Ethernet, one native Airport,
and same again under the VM.

Re: Computer name

2009-10-10 Thread F.W. Hänel

Hello all,

Just another query on the same subject.

I had a look in the DHCP clients list in my router. The iMac I am
using is listed without a name but
with the correct IP + MAC address (matches the network screen in syst/
preferences) 10.1.1.5
But there is also a second entry (in the DHCP list) with the name
iMac-intel-2 and this has a different

IP + MAC address from the one in network/preferences (10.1.1.8)

The other users in the DHCP list are all assigned to the correct
devices - there is no mixup here.

Can this cause problems for other users within the network ?

iMac intel, SL, Belkin-Ozemail router.

Cheers,

Walter

Further to the ShortName it does not work in Leopard, see link

One of the most-frequently-asked questions about Mac OS X is “How do I
change my short username?” While it's easy to change your full username

username, which is also the name of your home folder in the Finder,
seems set in stone (or in silicon, if you will).”

That may be what your are after.

Ronni is certainly NOT a Terminal Guru!

Now the legalities of this post are over with, this is what I did:

When you Launch Terminal, the default shell "Bash" will present the
last login time, followed by the command prompt.
This is formatted to show the computer's name, followed by the
current directory and then a dollar sign.
Depending on the system and network configuration, the computer's
name may change.

My hostname is "Rons-500GB-HD" (without the quotes)
The computer's host name is the one you type in the "Sharing" system
preferences, and while a change in the hostname should not affect
the performance of the machine, it is nice to have it be consistent.
The first thing I tried is to use the "hostname" command to change
the hostname:

1. Launch Terminal

2. I typed sudo hostname TEST

3. Hit Return

4. Typed my password

5. Hit Enter

Then Quit Terminal and logged in again to see the change had taken
place.

Yes, it had.

So then I moved on to changing it back to Rons 500GB HD which is the
one I want to keep from changing.

As Daniel has previously said, the hostname can be changed
dynamically by routers and other network devices through DHCP
requests, which can have the hostname keep changing every time your
IP address and other DHCP information is renewed.
If this is the case, you may be able to set the router to never
provide hostname information, or you can set the computer to never
accept a hostname change.

To do this, you will need to add a line to the computer's hostconfig
file using the following procedure:

1. Open the Terminal

2. Enter the following command:

   sudo pico /etc/hostconfig

	3.	Authenticate, scroll to the bottom of the file, and add the
following line:

   HOSTNAME=Rons-500GB-HD

(Change "Rons-500GB-HD" to your desired hostname--no spaces)

	4. Save the file and quit by pressing control-X, confirming the
save with the "Y" key followed by "enter".

   5. Quit Terminal

After this has been added to the file, the computer's hostname
should not change even when you renew your DHCP lease.

This is yet to be confirmed ... I await in trembling anticipation of
Daniel's reply ... or any other of our Terminal Gurus ;-)
My MacBook Pro has not "blown up", Rons 500GB HD is showing in
Sharing and in Terminal ... and I'm still connected to the Internet.

That may be a clue, Daniel. Periodically but rarely, like every few

did you click on the "Edit" button to change the -2.local?

My Computer's Name is Rons 500GB HD & beside the Edit section it is

When I noticed it had changed to Rons-500GB-HD-2.local
I just went into System Preferences > Sharing and in Computer

It was listed as Rons-500GB-HD-2 or (2) and in the edit section as
Rons-500GB-HD-2.local
So I just clicked on "Edit" & changed it to Rons-500GB-HD.local and
voilà the (2) was no longer.

The only reason I can think might have caused this is after I had
my SuperDuper "Cloned" Rons 500GB HD connected.
I wonder if the system then thinks there are TWO computers with the
same name on my Network, and as you cannot have any computers with
the same name on your Network … it changes one?

I hate it when I cannot find the exact reason why!
Our President Peter H once said to me & I quote ... "It's nice to

DKMacBookPro. So what it has to do (as it can't have two computers on the
same network), so it renames it to DKMacBookPro (2).

This doesn't sound like the case here, but I'm just putting forward that
information so people know as well. ;O)

But yes, it's normally with multiple connections on different networks but
the same machine (eg Airport and Ethernet). It can sometimes come from a
router reboot or something similar where the Network things that the old
name "is still there", so resets it again.

There was a way to reset it via Terminal with a "permanent" set, but as
mentioned you had to do that in Terminal. I found it on google somewhere, so
would need to refind it if anyone wanted.

Hope that helps a little.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Yes, Severin I only have the SuperDuper clone connected when I'm
actually updating the clone.

I do this weekly, so I'm sure it hasn't changed every time.
I will take notice next time if the computer name changes when the
clone is connected, and if it stays changed after disconnecting the
clone.

Something is causing The System to "think" there is more than one
computer with the same name on the Network.

Ah well, I've got to get back to serious work ;-)

Hi Severin,

This happens when the system detects two computers with the same
name on the same local network.
You can change the computer name and get rid of (5) in system
preferences->sharing.

I've had it happen to me before. Some people think it happens if
you have a "Previous Systems" Folder on your HD, others say it
can happen if you have both Airport and Ethernet connected, or
switch between them (like unplugging a laptop from Ethernet and
then using Airport)?

All you have to do is open "System Preferences" and select "Sharing". You
can change the computers name from that panel.
