Hi Sev,

Don¹t know about El Capitan - I¹m still at SL ;o)

However, assuming iTunes has not changed TOO much:

In iTunes select something (anything) and choose show in finder.

Once seen in finder, you can soon work out the filing logic.

Hi Stephen,

Your situation could be different to what Stuart has asked here.

You will probably I suspect; as soon as you boot up your NEW iMac use The Setup
Assistant - Migration Assistant to Transfer all your old programs, files,
folders, and settings from the OLD Mac to the NEW Mac.

Re: Coping iTunes library

2012-10-12 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Stuart,

As long as all your Music and Media is in the default location -
Home/Music/iTunes

Moving your Content to a New Computer:

If you’re simply looking to move your iTunes library to an entirely new
computer, the process is actually quite a bit simpler than relocating the
content, provided certain conditions are met:

• You are moving your iTunes library between two computers using the
same operating system and iTunes version; and
• You plan to store the iTunes library database and content in the same
relative locations on the new computer

If this is the case, then transferring your iTunes library to a new computer is
quite simple:
Just copy the entire "iTunes Folder" (which contains all sub-folders) from
your “Music” folder on your old computer to the corresponding folder on the
new computer.

Note: If you have previously run iTunes on the new computer at all, even if you
haven’t done anything with it, chances are that there will already be an
“iTunes” folder present. Unless you’ve already started using iTunes on the new
computer and adding content to it, you can safely overwrite this folder as it
simply represents the empty database that iTunes initially creates.

Note: that your iTunes preferences are machine-specific, and you will need to
go through and re-configure these the first time you run iTunes after copying
your library over to the new computer.

If you have any content purchased from the iTunes Store, you will need to
Re-Authorize the new computer for your iTunes Store account.
Computer authorization is machine-specific.
You should also make sure you DE-authorize your old computer if you no longer
plan to use it with iTunes.

Cheers,
Ronni

Shifting iTunes library

2012-01-15 Thread Peter Crisp
Hi all, I keep my iTunes library on a 500GB external drive and just recently
upgraded the drive to a 1TB portable external drive to give room for more
photos, music, Podcasts etc. I was within 15GB of the 500GB capacity.

I have migrated all of the content to the other drive but don't want to rebuild
the library given that iTunes will need repathing to the music folder on the
new drive. I haven't reset the new path in iTunes yet so will wait till there's
some responses to this.

Does anyone know how to do this simply? I am using a XP laptop (sorry not Mac)
but employer has priority in this case.

Any tips appreciated.

I have done what you said with my itunes library but did not realise

Thanks Tim.

I'll will try Rob Finlay's suggestion this week as this seems to mean
that I do not have to be logged for the library to be shared.

Re: Sharing iTunes library

2010-10-16 Thread Rob Findlay

He wants them all to share the Library on the same mac not across a network.
I have my iMac setup like this. Put a folder with the music into Users/Shared
and then under each login in iTunes preferences change the location of the
Library to this folder.

To make sure I had no issues with permissions I used Sandbox to create an ACL
which enforces everybody has full control over all files in this directory no
matter who creates them but this is probably unnecessary.

Re: Sharing iTunes library

2010-10-16 Thread Tim Law

Hello Stuart.

There must be something very wrong with your setup, sorry I can't help fix it.

I have just checked on my home networks, some running 10.5 and some 10.6, both
with itunes 10.

Under iTunes Preferences, I clicked on the Sharing tab and clicked the
appropriate buttons. Then it all just worked and I am now listening to Abba
streaming through from my sons computer. Given he is 17 and I am somewhat
older, this is quite remarkable for more than just technological perspective.
:-)

For this not to work so easily, seems to me you have something dreadful
happening. I hope it can be fixed.

Regards

Tim

Sharing iTunes library

2010-10-15 Thread bredens

I use iTunes connected to a PA system to have music in my waiting room. The
iTunes library is on my logon.

How do I share the library with all other users of the iMac?

Home Sharing does not enable you to share libraries.

Hi Ronni

Sorry! Old mac is sitting right there - forgot you couldn't see it!
(Actually it's not hooked up any more but I still have its clone on
the drive)

Glad to have saved you the second half of an email - apologies for the
first half

many thanks

Ronni's advice about holding down the Option key while starting
iTunes is very important. The dialog which appears prompts you to
locate your iTunes library. It is sufficient simply to point to
the iTunes folder on your external hard drive. iTunes will find
the library file by itself.

Yes, you can change the location in your Preferences, but you have
at least to quit iTunes and run it again for the change to be
recognised, and the results can be inconsistent. The option key
trick always works.

Re: itunes library

2010-03-24 Thread mince and pud

Thank you for weighing in, Peter.

Here's a funny thing - although the option-launch thing worked a
couple of times early in this saga, it has now stopped doing so.
Instead, if I option-launch iTunes all that happens is that the
frontmost programme is hidden and iT launches normally. Huh?

You're right about preferences not doing it - I had been trashing
library files that I knew were the wrong ones, hoping to find the
right one by elimination, but now iT is fixated on one in a 'previous
itunes library' (that's what appears in the top of the iT window)
folder and nothing I do in preferences will change its mind,
notwithstanding re-launches/restarts

I think I could find the right library file in an older backup of the
HD and put it back in the current music folder. But without option-
launch I can't tell iT where to look. Any ideas?

many thanks

Re: itunes library

Hi Alastair,

You are wanting to run iTunes from the External Drive's iTunes Library, NOT the
new Mac's iTunes Library, is this correct?

> nothing changes, even after relaunch. (it IS the folder I should be choosing?

What you want is the iTunes Library file, which should be in your iTunes Music
folder, which is inside your Music folder on the External Drive.

1) In iTunes, go preferences > advanced and make sure (a) the location of your
iTunes media (or music) folder is pointing to the external, (b) keep iTunes
media folder organised and (c) copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to
library are checked.

2) In iTunes, go file > library > organise library and check consolidate files.
Hit OK.

Cheers,
Ronni

and dragged a couple of albums onto the itunes icon. It duly added
them - but all the old stuff still appears too. I could delete the
unwanted stuff from within itunes and bring it all in again, but
I'm losing the cover artwork that was laboriously added (these are
from my own cds, not itunes store stuff) and it's all getting a bit
irritating.

Can anyone from the 'itunes for dummies' dept help please?

thanks

Hi Alastair,

Sounds like you might have migrated an old iTunes Library file across.
Was the old Mac iTunes the same version as iTunes on the new Mac?
Did you open iTunes on the new Mac before you connected the external
Drive and had it mounted?

Your external HD needs to be mounted before launching iTunes or
iTunes will create a new blank library on your startup drive.
i.e You need to have the external drive up and running prior to
launching iTunes.

If your iTunes library files (the entire \iTunes\ folder) is on the
External Drive.

1.Hold Down The Option Key as you start iTunes
2. Select Choose Library & select the iTunes Library file in the
iTunes folder on the External Drive.

itunes library

2010-03-23 Thread mince and pud

hope everyone survived the deluge and has their power back.

I just got a new mac (well, new to me...) and migrating over seems to
have been pretty smooth. Probably shouldn't have said that. But iTunes
has me stumped.

My library is still on an external firewire drive where it has always
been - I just told the old itunes where it was and all was well. But
when I tell the new itunes where it is it just ignores me - it claims
to be updating library but the window just shows some old stuff which
hasn't been in my itunes for years and doesn't seem to reflect any
actual collection of files that I can find - must be created by some
old library xml file.

Just to see, I pointed it at the empty itunes folder in user>music,
and dragged a couple of albums onto the itunes icon. It duly added

RE: iTunes Library - Truncated File Names for Imported Music

2009-11-23 Thread Alan Smith
Hi Ronni

Thanks and thanks. Both problems solved. I had used v1.1 tagging - I
hadn't updated my MP3 software as the original version worked!

Hi again Alan,

I meant to include this in my previous email.

In iTunes 9 you need to "Control-Click" (or right click) the song & choose
"Convert ID3 Tags" & select v2.4

Check to see which version of ID3 Tags your MP3 files were encoded for.
The settings for older ID3 tag versions did not allow longer character
strings in some of the fields.

Select one of your problem tunes. Select Get Info... in the Summary Tab on
the right hand side of the pane is the listing for which version ID3 Tag
your file is.

If it is not at least v. 2.3 then this is the source of your problem.

Some files may not even have a version number or are only version 1.0, if
so, then select all your problem MP3 files and from the Advanced menu select
convert ID3 Tags, choose at least v. 2.3.

Then you should be able to add more information into some of the fields in
your MP3 files.

Problem 2 - Can the file name (Name column in Music Library) be edited
within iTunes?

To edit song or CD information:

1. Select the song or CD you want to edit, and then choose File
> Get Info (or press Command-I).

2. Click Info and make your changes.

iTunes Library - Truncated File Names for Imported Music

2009-11-23 Thread Alan Smith

Problem 1 - When importing MP3 music sourced from a CD into iTunes the file
name is severely truncated. How can I overcome this?

Problem 2 - Can the file name (Name column in Music Library) be edited
within iTunes?

My music collection is in MP3 format with the bulk on data CDs. I am
importing it all to my new iMac (iTunes 09) with storage on an external USB
HDD (Maxtor 500 MB equally partitioned for Time Machine and Music).
Original music sources include recent MP3 downloads from Naxos Classics
Online, CDs, audio streaming and files created from cassettes and vinyl LPs.

Many imported files display their full 60 character filenames in iTunes.
However if the original source was a standard CD the iTunes library Name
column only displays the first 30 characters of the track filename. The
full 60 character filename is displayed in Finder. This is a significant
problem: I now have, for example, a dozen tracks with Name of .I need to know the rest of the filename giving
concerto, movement and opus numbers! The filename in Finder displays the
full description which includes the remaining characters such as .

The Naxos files (downloaded in MP3 format) and all home recorded tracks from
vinyl LPs etc display their full file names in iTunes.

There is no difference in truncation if I import the data CD by dragging the
icon into iTunes, copy a single file, or play a track and allow iTunes to
automatically add it to the library.

Hello WAMUGers,

I was 'fiddling' around with Numbers '09 today, and I got thinking
perhaps I could do a Spreadsheet of my iTunes Library.

(Ok Daniel, I couldn't find anything more constructive to do) ;-)

This is what I did:

1. In iTunes click Music Library

2. Edit > Select All

3. Edit > Copy

4. Open Numbers (or another Spreadsheet Application you use)

5. Choose a Blank Template

6. Click on Second Row (I left Row One for Headers, as you need to
type them in when tidying up the Spreadsheet)

7. Edit > Paste & Match Style

It takes awhile to do the paste (spinning Beach Ball- depends on
amount of songs in your library). I thought "This is not going to
work"
But eventually you end up with your Library Listing pasted in
neatly with columns as in iTunes.

Change column widths if required, and type in headers (column Names)
I have 10 columns - Name / Time / Artist / Album / Genre / Size /
Kind / Composer / Year / Release Date

This would also work if you Select All & Copy from a specific
playlist, so you could create a track listing of a playlist you
burned to a CD.

Someone on List might find this useful

Have you done this in Numbers '09? It does not hold the same format as

The way I gave instructions below, holds all format exactly as it is

iTunes Library in a Spreadsheet

2009-03-06 Thread Ronda Brown

I thought "This is not going to work"
But eventually you end up with your Library Listing pasted in neatly
with columns as in iTunes.

Change column widths if required, and type in headers (column Names)
I have 10 columns - Name / Time / Artist / Album / Genre / Size /
Kind / Composer / Year / Release Date

This would also work if you Select All & Copy from a specific
playlist, so you could create a track listing of a playlist you burned
to a CD.

Someone on List might find this useful

Cheers,
Ronni

RE: iTunes Library

2007-02-24 Thread David Moyle
Hi Severin

If you hunt you should also find it with its mates in the Podcast Directory.

Apple made this change late in the v6 versions I believe, that PodCasts are
also stored in the Music directory and not just the Podcast directory. Why?
Must be some logic to it..

Thanks, David Moyle

Re: iPhoto not recognising iTunes library.

2005-06-10 Thread Dark1
Sorry but I don't think I'm going to be able to help you. I just
tried encoding one of my songs into AAC format to see if it would
present a problem. Worked just fine. I did have to move up a bar at
the bottom to be able to see what I can select but aside from that no
issues.

In your quest for a solution it may be helpful to you to see if the
same problem presents its-self in iMovie or iDVD.

Good luck.
Ruben A. Franke

Just curious... What format are your music files in? I'm assuming
if you've tried new playlists with iTunes then this problem also
occurs for playlists along with the iTunes music library.

They're all in AAC format, and iTunes is running normally. I just
can't get access to any of my iTunes library through iPhoto.

Cheers!

iPhoto not recognising iTunes library.

2005-06-10 Thread Callum Prior

Howdy all,

I'm having trouble getting iPhoto to recognise my iTunes library to
access music for slideshows. When you go to select the music 'Sample
Music' is available, but 'no iTunes Music Library' is greyed out.

Running:
iTunes 4.8
iPhoto 4.0.3
OSX 10.3.9

I've run through the suggestion in iPhoto help thus:

"Recreate your iTunes Music Library.xml file. Quit iPhoto, iMovie,
iDVD, and iTunes. Click the Finder icon in the Dock, and choose Go > Go
to Folder. Type "~/Music/iTunes" or "~/Documents/iTunes" and click Go.
Drag the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file to your desktop. Open iTunes
and create a new playlist by choosing File > New Playlist. Quit iTunes
and open iPhoto to make sure you can see your iTunes library when
creating a slideshow."

But to no avail. Any ideas?

Cheers!

Callum

Re: itunes library problem

2003-10-12 Thread Dark Servant
Oh, ok. I see your problem now. I have a 15 Gb iPod so I never have
to worry about management. Unfortunately I don't know how to help you
with your problem although a friend of mine has had a similar problem
with "songs not found" in iTunes. I think it was solved when he
updated iTunes by reinstalling a newer version.
Perhaps you could try reinstalling iTunes and repeating your earlier
process. I'm not sure it will work but it's worth a try.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help
Ruben A. Franke

How many playlists do you have and how important are they? It sounds
like it may just be easier to remake your playlists and start with a
blank library. I know you don't want to do this but using the smart
playlist feature might make this a little easier than you expected.
I've got about 1150 songs in iTunes and I usually don't bother with
playlists. I keep my songs on random and use the browse feature to
specialise for artists or albums when I'm in the mood for it.

Good luck anyway
Ruben A. Franke

I have tailored the playlists so that a subset of 10 playlists just
fits

nicely on my ipod (one of the first 5GB ones) and the pod is set to
synchronise with just these playlists. I tend to use the playlists on
the
ipod a lot and this approach makes it easier to vary the ipod a little
(just

keep the playlist total under 5GB).

If there is no other way then, of course, I'll have to do it manually.
It
just annoys me that it works for about half the albums but not the
rest -

makes me think I'm overlooking something obvious? (Though obviously not
obvious to me!!)

Any ideas out there?

TIA

Hi all,

I'm just in the process of reconfiguring my imac - re-formated disc,
installed 10.2 & 9.2.2, updated to 10.2.8, updated to itunes 4.0.1 etc.

I'm also migrating some info functions over from my powerbook, eg I
used to
keep all my music on my powerbook but the 10GB disc is getting very
crowded

so decided to use the imac (60GB drive). Eventually when everything is
running smoothly on the imac, I'll re-configure the powerbook
(currently

running OS 9.1)

Connected two computers by ethernet, mounted PB disc on iMac and
copied over

the itunes music folder and replaced the existing music folder.

Since I've spent some time setting up playlists etc, I wanted to use my
existing library - itunes music library (2) since the powerbook is
currently
running itunes 2.0.2. Now I did this exercise before between two
computers
and it worked fine if you renamed the library to suit - so I deleted
the
existing default itunes 4 Music Library and renamed the transfered
library
and (on second attempt after changing all read/write privileges to
match)

success - the old library and playlists all show up - except for:

PROBLEM 1

Whilst a large portion of the playlists/library is working fine, for
many
other tracks the library can't find the music - I can then follow the
"would
you like to locate it" route successfully - but this only seem to work
on a
track by track basis - not something I want to do with thousands of
tracks.
Consolidating the library clarifies the problem in that the "!" is
shown

against all the tracks with a problem

I've looked for some pattern in what it can find and it seems:

1) problem seems to be at album level - ie all the tracks in an album
are

OK or all are problematic.

2) Problem is not at artist level - ie one artist folder can contain a
problem album & an OK album.

The library itself wouldn't be a problem if not for the playlists - I
could
just start with a blank library and drop the music folder onto it.
However

then I'd lose the playlists.

Any suggestions to avoid me having to set up the library and playlists
again

manually would be most gratefully received!

TIA

Neil
