Re: Parallels and XP & upgrade OX

Hi Ronni and Tim

Thanks very much for your advice on doing the upgrade to ML.
That website is very useful thanks Ronni and there are some apps I will have to
check with before I consider doing it.

Seems like quite a process to go through and I will have a look at your website
before I do anything. I dont use many of the smaller apps so that cuts out a
few hundred!!

Best regards

Chris

Re: Parallels and XP & upgrade OX

2013-07-30 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi again Chris,

I forgot to send you the link for RoaringApps page:

Check for Mountain Lion-compatible updates to third-party software: As with any
major upgrade to Mac OS X, you’ll likely find that some of your third-party
software needs to be updated to work with Mountain Lion. If you take some time
to check compatibility before installing OS X 10.8, you’ll be in a position to
get up and running immediately, rather than being frustrated by your favourite
apps and add-ons not working.

To check app compatibility, you can visit each developer’s website, but I
recommend first checking RoaringApps’ growing list of Mac software and Mountain
Lion compatibility.

(The list shows both Lion and Mountain Lion compatibility—be sure to look at
the Mountain Lion column.)

If an app has an update available, you’ll want to download and install that
update. For apps you’ve obtained via the Mac App Store, this is as simple as
launching the App Store app, clicking the Updates button in the toolbar,
clicking Update All, and providing your Apple ID and password when
prompted—this will download and install all available updates at once. For
non-Mac App Store apps, you’ll need to manually install updates. Some apps
provide a built-in update feature (often accessed by choosing Check For Updates
from the application’s Application Name menu or its Help menu); for those that
don’t, you’ll need to visit the developer’s website.

The biggest offenders here—in terms of being incompatible with Mountain
Lion—will be programs and system add-ons that integrate with (or hack) OS X at
a low level. Kernel extensions, for example, are notorious for being
incompatible with major new versions of OS X, but you may also find that
utilities that tweak the Finder, add-ons that enhance Mail, and other plug-ins
and “enhancers” won’t work under Mountain Lion, even if they worked fine under
Lion.

So be sure to check vendor websites for OS X 10.8-compatible updates for your
favourite software before upgrading. (Don’t forget to check third-party System
Preferences panes and Mail add-ons.) If it turns out that a particular bit of
software is incompatible with Mountain Lion and doesn’t have an update
available, uninstall or disable it until a compatible version is released.

Cheers,

Ronni

Hi Chris,

I'm pleased to hear the GIS workshop was very good and Parallels with XP SP3
worked perfectly.

Re: Upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion from OS X 10.6.8.

Your MacBook Pro is capable of running the latest OS X 10.7 Lion and Mountain
Lion OS X 10.8.
Unfortunately Lion (OS X 10.7) is no longer available for sale on the Mac App
Store only Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.
Lion is also not available on Apple's website, or Amazon.com, or anywhere else.
Lion is still available from Apple... But you have to call Apple to get it. It
will cost you US$20 & will come to you as a redeemable code that you will use
in the Mac App Store.

As your MBP is capable of running the latest version of OS X 10.8 Mountain
Lion, if all your applications, printer etc are compatible, your best option
would be to purchase Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store and upgrade to it.

You would need to check that the applications you use, and printer are
compatible with Lion & Mountain Lion.
Go to my website and download my Tutorials "Prepare for Lion" and "Prepare For
Mountain Lion".
Have a good read of the tutorials and check your applications as it shows you
how.

The PDF explains what you need to do to get your Mac ready for Lion. How to
check your Mac can run Lion, the amount of RAM & free Hard Drive space
required, and Application 'kind' that will work in Lion. How to 'clean up your
computer' and the correct way to install Lion.

The PDF explains how to check your Mac can run Mountain Lion, the amount of RAM
& free Hard Drive space required and the correct way to install Mountain Lion.

If you do download any of my documents from my website I would appreciate a
donation. These documents take time to
complete and I also have to pay my HostingServices fees.

Cheers,
Ronni

I imagine your MBPro8,2 is more recent that 2007, so it's probably just a
normal upgrade. Purchase via the Mac App Store and download it.

Parallels with XP and SP3 on the mac worked perfectly!!

In fact of the 20 participants, 5 were using macs, and it seemed while some of
the PC's in the room had troubles the macs just kept working!

Thanks very much for all your help on this.

I do have another slight dilemma as I may need to upgrade my MBPro from 10.6.8
to 10.7 (or 10.8) to run some new software I purchased, and that I had assumed
would run on my present system: Lr 5 only runs on 10.7 and 10.8!!

Would you please advise on what I need to do to successfully upgrade my

I had thought of purchasing a new one but things are a bit tight as I am sure

Hi Tim

Have been out all day so have only just read your email!
I am the same, using OziExplorer with the Hema Navigator and Parallels! It's a
pain in the (whatever) I am going to give Crossover a try after your comments
and was wondering if you could remember the help site you spoke of? Also any
other assistance you may be able to provide would be fantastic

Kind regards

Re: Parallels and XP

2013-07-21 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Chris,

If Parallels is saying "Update Now"... Yes it is imperative the update is done
now.
In Parallels Desktop if you use an expanding virtual hard disk in your virtual
machine, its image file size on the physical hard disk increases as you add new
data to the virtual hard disk.

If you find that the capacity of your virtual machine hard disk does not fit
your needs anymore, you can change its size. Click the Edit button and the
dialog for changing the disk size will appear.
Note: if your virtual machine is running, its virtual hard disks cannot be
resized

In Parallels Desktop if Windows is running Go to Virtual Machine > Shutdown
Then Virtual Machine > configure - Hard Disk 1 (in left column)
You will see If you are using Expanding disk, 64.0 GB
Click Edit, then drag the slider or type the new size in the size field.
Select the 'Resize file system' option if you want to change the file system
size:
Note: if you select 'Resize file system' option when increasing the disk size,
the additional disk space will be added to the last volume.

No, I have never used ArcGIS or similar software.
I would imagine it would be installed in All Programs.

How much free space do you have on your MacBook Pro?

cheers,
Ronni

Re: Parallels and XP

2013-07-21 Thread Chris Burton
Hi Ronni

Thanks very much Ronni. I now have ArcGIS 10.1 installed after about 2 hours of
pain!

Have you used this software before Ronni? I havnt, so am not even sure how to
start it as there were no icons installed in the start menu or on the desktop.
I will have a look online and at the Esri website.

My available HD space is limited now in XP and Im not too sure how to increase
it in Parallels; do you know how I go about this Ronni?

Also, while doing this ArcGIS install, I had an update message from Parallels
saying I need to update version 8, NOW!!
Is it imperative this is done?

Many thanks for your great help on this

Ok, still check what version of WindowsXP you do have installed by
following instructions in my previous reply. But if you are receiving that
message I would think you don't have SP3 installed and also don't have
 Automatic Updates turned on.

Yes. Go here and download the stand-alone Windows XP SP3 package from the
 following Microsoft Download Center page.
Although this page says that the installation package is intended for IT
professionals and developers, you can safely download and install this
 file.

Hi Chris,

Good suggestion by Tim, might be worth a try depending on which version of
ArcGIS you have.
You can get a trial version of Crossover (I think) to try.
It doesn't look very promising though with this search below. "Known NOT to
work in ArcGIS 10, & 9.2 and untested in version 8.3"

:

You don't have a lot of time to obtain a copy of Windows 7 and get installed &
setup to perhaps then find it doesn't work as well as you require.

Is your installation of WindowsXP in Parallels Desktop 8 completely uptodate
have you run Windows Update and downloaded and installed everything it shows?

To check what version of Windows you are running in Parallels.
Start Parallels - Start WindowsXP
Then Go to - Control Panel > System & Security > System
You will then see under Windows edition - what version of WindowsXP you are
running.
WindowsXP Professional
Service Pack 3

I have Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 running in Parallels Desktop 8.

Re: Parallels and XP

2013-07-20 Thread Tim Law
Chris,

I have only one PC programme that I ever want to use on my Mac, and that is the
mapping programme OziExplorer. It works okay on Parallels and Windows various
versions, but it is such a pain having to start up Windows, get all the updates
in order and 'cope' with a whole new layer of operating system, pay for new
versions etc etc etc.

I found an OSX app called Crossover and found it works just fine for the
purpose of running OziExplorer. There is no need to run, or own, any Windows
software. It doesn't work for everything. You can check to see if the
application you require works in Crossover at
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/

I think OziExplorer was not listed but I still got it working by following some
tips I found on a help site. The same might be the case for you.

Might be worth having a look. I've not found any downside of using Crossover
for this purpose.

Tim

Parallels and XP

2013-07-20 Thread Chris Burton
Morning muggers

Its been awhile and I hope everyone are well

I have a dilemma that is now quite urgent regarding running new GIS software on
parallels (updated to version 8) which has XP.

The software is large (ArcGIS) and system requirements say anything from XP
professional home edition with service pack 3, and up wards is required for it
to run. I have tried installing it but an error appears saying a service pack
is required?

I have XP, but Im not sure if it is Professional and if it has the SP3?
I have tried looking online and with Microsoft and only found SP3 for network
and developers, so am not sure if this is what I need?

My only other avenue it seems is to obtain a new version of windows, probably
Windows 7, or buy a PC laptop, as I will need everything up and running by
tomorrow!!

I would appreciate any advice from someone who may be familiar with this
situation?

Many thanks and best regards

Chris

PS Im using a macbook with OS 10 6.8 at 2.2ghz and 8gb of ram. These specs are
within the limits required for the GIS.

parallels and XP

2008-02-27 Thread Kevin Lock
My wife uses XP to run a sewing machine program along with a WACOM
tablet.

We have loaded XP onto a MacBook and it looks OK, but when we loaded
the latest driver for the tablet the pen does not respond.

The Tablet Model is: CTF-420 and the program is 4D Sketch.

Any ides for me on this one?

Thanks

Kev
