Shared Calendar updates not appearing on iPhone ?

2020-02-16 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi folks.

This is a conundrum ??

My wife has an iPhone SE and myself an iPhone 6s (both with latest iOS)
Our son is a pilot living overseas.
He shares his flying roster with us via Calendar.

Until a couple of months ago the updates always appeared (through iCloud) on
both our iMacs and both our iPhones.
However a couple of months ago both iPhones stopped receiving his updates.
But oddly both iMacs still received them.

I have tried numerous ideas to return this to normal but failed.
Both our iPhones use 4 Calendars (all linked to iCloud), our son’s being called
DAVID.
Then a couple of days ago I tried changing my iPhone Default Calendar from HOME
to DAVID.
His Roster immediately appeared on my iPhone.

So I tried the same with my wife’s iPhone and bingo … same result.
Then I changed them both back to Default HOME and both iPhones have retained
the DAVID Calendar.

None of this makes any sense to me and I wonder now if this has to be the
process with every DAVID update ?
Or does anyone know if something else needs adjusting to prevent this ?

Regards,
Stephen Chape

2015-10-28 Thread Peter Crisp
Thanks for the very informative guide on the ios and osx multiple unit updates
Ronni. Some opportunity with the ios devices in my house but as they're not all
the same, it's not fully transferable. Thanks for pointing that out.

I've yet to go El Cap yet but will shortly when my Westnet resets. Kids have
gobbled up all my months data and a 50GB top up as well!!

Hi Peter,

How to Install OS X updates on multiple Macs:

There are a few ways to do this, I’ll list some below.

The El Capitan installer downloads to your /Applications folder.
A 6+ GB download a process that could take anywhere from minutes to days,
depending on the bandwidth of your broadband connection. In 10.7 Lion and
later, the installer’s icon appears in Launchpad once the download begins and a
progress bar on the icon fills as the download proceeds.

After it downloads, the installer launches automatically.
But you’re not ready to install El Capitan yet, so choose Install OS X > Quit
Install OS X to quit the installer for the time being.

The App Store and Multiple Macs:

One Way: If you have more than one Mac—each running Snow Leopard or later and
signed in to the App Store with the same Apple ID—then once you download El
Capitan on one, it will show up in the Purchased view on the others too.

If you have bandwidth (and time) to spare, you can click Install on each Mac to
download the El Capitan installer.
(If your Macs use different Apple IDs in the App Store, you can choose Store >
Sign Out, choose Store > Sign In, enter the other Apple ID, re-download El
Capitan, and then repeat the procedure to sign in under the original account.)

But why go to that bother?

Another Way: It’s faster and easier to copy the installer from /Applications on
the first Mac to the others using Mac OS X’s built-in File Sharing feature.
(hint: look in System Preferences > Sharing)

If you put the installer anywhere else—your Desktop, ~/Downloads, or
wherever—it won’t be deleted after it runs.
Even so, because that 6+ GB file is valuable, you should make a copy just in
case the unexpected should happen.
So, before you do anything else, you should either Command-drag the installer
to move it from /Applications to another location (so it won’t be deleted
automatically, no matter what), or Option-drag the installer to copy it to
another location—preferably another volume—so if it is deleted, you’ll have a
spare.

Better Way: Create a Bootable Installation Volume, as I describe below.

Although there are many ways to do this, the basic steps you’d want to follow
are these:
1. On the Mac—the one where you’ll download the installer— open the App Store
app.
2. Download El Capitan, as described above.
3. Copy the installer from /Applications onto the external media of your choice.

To Create a Bootable Installation Volume
NOTE: Your external thumb Drive or SSD drive or Hard Drive drive must be
formatted as a
Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume with a GUID Partition Table.

Make a Bootable El Capitan Installer Volume:
El Capitan doesn’t include or require boot media. But you might want to have a
bootable copy of the installer as a backup, to simplify installing El Capitan
on multiple Macs, to install El Capitan on a Mac without Snow Leopard or later,
or for other reasons.

One option is a command-line tool called createinstallmedia that is buried
inside the El Capitan installer (and thus a method that Apple officially
sanctions).
Using this tool does require mucking around in Terminal—and won’t work in Snow
Leopard or earlier—but if you’d like to learn how to use it, go to this
Macworld article
How to make a bootable OS X 10.11 El Capitan installer drive
<http://www.macworld.com/article/2981585/operating-systems/how-to-make-a-bootable-os-x-10-11-el-capitan-installer-drive.html>,
 by Dan Frakes.

El Capitan has already had a update 1o.11.1 but NO Combo Update yet (& as every
WAMUG member should know - I always prefer to update using OS X Combo Updates)

Download iOS Updates Once for Installing on Multiple Devices:

iOS is more involved / convoluted
Take Particular NOTE: The iOS devices must be of the same type and model,
meaning three different iPhone 4s can use the same firmware, but an iPhone 4
can’t use the same update file as an iPad 2 would, and an iPod touch can’t use
an iPhone 4S update file, and so on.

Same models use the same IPSW, different models need different IPSW.

"Updating iOS with firmware is slightly more technical, but can be advantageous
for users who are installing the same update onto multiple same-model devices,
which is fairly common in offices and various scale enterprise deployment
situations. Additionally, using IPSW for an update can be necessary for mor

Apple Updates some of the it's 2-step verification features.

For those who use 2-step Verification with iCloud (which is worth it). Apple

Hopefully now they'll start pushing this 2-step Verification more. :o)

Two-step verification now protects iCloud
Starting today, in addition to protecting your Apple ID account information,
two-step verification also protects all of the data you store and keep up to
date with iCloud. For more information, read the Two-Step Verification FAQ.
Sign in securely with app-specific passwords
If you use iCloud with any third party apps such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla
Thunderbird or BusyCal, you can now create app-specific passwords that let you
sign in securely even if the app you are using does not support two-step
verification.
To generate an app-specific password:
Sign in to My Apple ID (https://appleid.apple.com)
Go to Password Security
Click Generate App-Specific Password
App-specific passwords will be required starting on 1 October 2014.

The best way to deal with .rtfd files is the lowly TextEdit. This totally
underestimated application is on everyone's Mac, and uses .rtfd as its default
file format. You can created PDFs directly from it via the Print Menu (Save as
PDF), but you can also save in Word format, which can then be read by any
version of Pages.

TextEdit is a very capable word processor in its own right, and is more than
enough for many routine word processing tasks. Like many other apps that come
supplied with your Mac, it is often overlooked when looking for a solution.

The latest version of Pages is actually 5.1, and has many more features and
increased compatibility than 5.0.1. When Pages 5 is installed on your Mac,
existing versions such as Pages 4 are not removed. the changes were seen as
necessary because of the lack of file and feature compatibility between the Mac
and iOS devices such as the iPad. Apple have promiser that they are working
towards most of the features we were used in version 4. I notice that the
ability to swap between Word Processing and Desktop Publishing modes has also
returned, but as far I know this has not been documented.

Thanks to Tim Law and Daniel for their replies, sorry for not replying sooner.

Opinion's sought on iPad's history with software updates

2012-11-04 Thread Matt Falvey
Hi, I am wondering if I and many others are being told a load of rubbish by
some people at my daughter's schools IT department. The problem is that every
pupil in entire school has to have an iPad 4, 32 Gb for next year. Now my
daughter's, both have iPads, an iPad 2 16Gb and an iPad 2 32GB, but the school
has said in a Dear Parents instruction letter :
Can I get an iPad2 or iPad3?

a. No. With the release of the iPad 4, this becomes the NEW iPad. Because
students will be using them for two ‐ three years they will want the most up to
date version to 'last the distance', especially if Apple continues to release
frequent updates, as has happened recently. Also, Apple often only supports
software updates for the more recent versions. For example, the last iOS update
was not available for the iPad 1.

I will be honest and say I know absolutely nothing about the iPads, but it
seems a bit of stretch to say that Apple would not be supporting updates for an
iPad that was only introduced in the last couple of years, without an almighty
consumer backlash. And from the little that I have read, am I correct in
thinking that apart from the retina screen, the new chip, and the new plug,
there was very little difference between the iPad 3 and the 4?

I am just concerned that I might be spending in excess of $1500, plus insurance
for two new iPad's that are not really required, if the existing iPad 2's work
and the people in IT department are windoz trained and learning Mac's at my
expense.

Anyone have any thoughts on this or is aware on Apples policy regarding
software support for iPads?

Thanks.

Take care.

Matt Falvey.

Re: Opinion's sought on iPad's history with software updates

2012-11-04 Thread Tim Law
Number of issues here Matt,

I have an iPad 1. I cannot upgrade to iOS6.
Does it gripe me that Apple have stopped supporting a machine that is less than
two years old? Yes it does.
Am I markedly worse off as a user for sticking to iOS5? Probably not, at least
my Maps app work!! :-)

Is there a consumer backlash? Well, yes, but we just grumble and put up with
'this is the way Apple is'. The truth is that this is the way Apple has always
been - bringing on new hardware and software that after not very long does not
run on the older machines. Not long after I bought my Mac Plus in 1987, I
needed to look to the upgrades available. Many Many machines later I am
resigned to this being the price we pay, again and again. :-(

Is the school reasonable in their dictum?
Schools like things to be kept simple and easy. Take the school booklist.
Okay, open your book to page 34. Oh, but Miss, my copy it's page 45, we
bought it cheap at Woolies and not off the school booklist. Miss I can't use
these in my folder, we bought three ring folders. Schools like things simple
and consistent. I imagine they think they are trying to be helpful in dictating
iPad4, so your daughters aren't made out to be different in class. Is this
reasonable? Obviously from the schools perspective it is. Could it be
different? Sure.

I've no idea what apps the school is suggesting the iPads use for in class.
Facebook works on iOS5 just as well as iOS6 Are there other apps teenagers
use??? :-) A bad example perhaps.

The school would be sensible to have a more flexible policy and say for
example, your iPad needs to run iOS 6. Into the future, this standard may be
upgraded at which time another device may need to be purchased if any device
but an iPad4 is used.

I'm thinking comment and feedback to the school council is in order, asking for
a revision or at least more technically sound explanation of this dictum.
Whether it's a private school or not, you've got a right to ask for a better
explanation and to lodge your disagreement with the policy.

My 2c worth.

Tim

Re: Opinion's sought on iPad's history with software updates

2012-11-04 Thread Daniel Kerr
it runs on an iPad Gen4 ok, as that is what it was designed around and
tested on. If yours doesn't run it, I'm afraid you'll have to upgrade or your
child/ren will get left behind

I could way off the mark and completely wrong. Thankfully I don't have to worry
about that (yet), though Andrew does love his iPad1 and and is more then happy
with the apps on it. (one of which he is an App tester with,…LOL. Thankfully he
hasn't asked for commission for app testing yet,…lol).
That's just some thoughts that spring to mind.

Hope some of that helps. (and doesn't offend, as it's not meant to). Oh side
note,.Tim , when you do upgrade to a newer iPad then first thing you'll notice
is the massive speed increase. I remember when I had an iPad1 and was setting
up the (then) new iPad2 for a client I was like wow, this thing is so much
faster! :o) I wanted one!! Unfortunately my budget kept me inline and wouldn't
allow me to get it. (damn that money factor! lol) ;o)

Enjoy!

Kind regards
Daniel

2012-11-01 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi People,

The Safari 6.0.2 update was released and has quickly departed... a lot of
problems with the Safari 6.0.2 update download and installation. So even if it
comes back 'online' I suggest you DON'T update just yet, wit until we know more
about this Safari update.

• When more than five subscribers Like a photo in a shared stream,
their names are now displayed correctly
• Contextual menu now includes an Import command to import all the

added directly to other shared streams
• Multiple email addresses can now be copied and pasted in the Shared
with field for shared streams

the Browser view
• Addresses a problem that could prevent the Viewer from displaying
images with correct color after Auto White Balance and Auto Enhance are applied
• Addresses an issue that could cause JPEGs exported with a custom ICC
profile to render incorrectly
• A dialog now displays progress when deleting large numbers of photos
using the Empty Aperture Trash command
• Fixes a problem that could cause duplicate detection on import to
fail when the Auto-Split Projects option is enabled
• RAW files are no longer displayed in the Import window when the JPEG
files only option is enabled
• Key photos made from panoramic images are now displayed at high
resolution
• Addresses a problem that could cause the Info panel in the Inspector
to display the wrong metadata view
• Fixes an issue that could prevent Microsoft Outlook from being used
to email photos from within Aperture
• Improves stability when working with AVCHD video files
• Fixes a problem with using the Zoom navigator on a second display
• Addresses issues that could cause web journals to export incorrectly
• Includes stability improvements

Details on Safari 6.0.2 are scarce; Apple merely says that it’s recommended for
all users of OS X Mountain Lion version 10.8.2 and includes security updates.

All updates are free and available via the Mac App Store; the Aperture 3.4.2
update iPhoto 9.4.2 are also available via Apple’s support downloads site.

Note: The update has NOT fixed the issue Unable to 'Save Add to iPhoto ' in

or Control-Click or Right-Click on the image and select Export to

The attachments Save drop down menu to Add to iPhoto is definitely BROKEN.

If I choose Quicklook then Open with Preview then click and hold Open with
Preview then THAT Add to iPhoto works.
Please Apple, fix this broken link feature in Mail.

Adobe Photoshop CS6 13.0.1 Illustrator CS6 16.0.1 Updates

2012-09-04 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi WAMUG CS6 Users,
Adobe Photoshop CS6 13.0.1
Adobe has released Photoshop CS6 13.0.1 with fixes for two critical security
vulnerabilities that could lead to malicious code execution. According to
aSecunia advisory, this buffer overflow vulnerability occurred during a
boundary error when processing a PNG image. In addition to the security patch,
the new release aims for better stability with fixes for 31 specific crashing
issues, as well as provides a variety of fixes for 3D features plus Drawing and
Graphics tools. ($699 new, $199 upgrade, free update, 7.9 MB via direct
download, release notes)

Adobe Illustrator CS6 16.0.1
Adobe has released Illustrator CS6 16.0.1 with a number of fixes to improve
overall stability. The update resolves an issue with Illustrator unexpectedly
quitting if you only have read-only permissions on the Preferences folder,
ensures the Transform commands work as expected when using the Transform
Patterns option, fixes the Save for Web command to correctly create images with
specified dimensions, and more. Additionally, the new release should improve
copying and pasting when working with a third-party clipboard manager. ($599
new, $249 upgrade, free update, 5.8 MB via direct download, release notes)

Cheers,
Ronni

Repeated Mac App Store Updates

2012-08-04 Thread Alan Smith
Hello all

Advice please on what do do about duplicates Updates from the App store.

I downloaded and installed updated iPhoto '11 (ver 9.3.2) and iMovie '11 (ver
9.0.7) on Thursday after Mountain Lion upgraded from Snow Leopard. These were
included in the standard Software Update run after ML installed.

This evening the Mac App app displayed a badge signifying 2 updates available.
Yes, the same iPhoto and iMovie versions. I clicked on Update All and they
started to download (over 1 GB each). I then Paused the download. Launchpad
now shows them as paused.

Info under the App store purchases tab is more confusing. It shows I purchased
iPhoto on 16 May 2011 (true, v 9.1.3) and iMovie on 5 September 2011 (true, v
9.0.4) and a resume label. There is no indication of the updates downloaded
on 2 August 2012. Is this normal? A further mysterious thing is that the tab
shows OS X Mountain Lion purchased on 1 August 2012 - but with the download
label highlighted, not the expected installed label.

What should I do? I feel the files are too big just to download and see what
happens. I feel there is something significantly wrong if the App store
cannot tell I already have the updates. And I don't want to download another
ML installer!

Cheers
Alan

Re: Repeated Mac App Store Updates

2012-08-04 Thread wa...@realworldcomputing.com.au
Hi Alan,

When you looked in the Purchases tab of the App Store, OS X Mountain Lion will
quite often show up with a button labelled Download. That is because once you
have run the ML installer it will delete itself and thus the App Store does not
see it in your Applications directory. You can ignore this. It is only when you
see and OS update in the Updates tab that you need to pay it attention. This
would be when a new point release, say OS X 10.8.1, or a security update comes
out.

As for iPhoto and iMovie there could be a problem there if it is attempting to
download the same update over and over. It is quite normal for the the
Purchases tab to display only the purchase date of an application and not when
it was last updated. When an update is offered, you can normally see the
version of the update and the version of the currently installed version so it
is usually clear why the update is being offered.

Now that you have started the updates, I suggest you let them finish
downloading, install them and see if the badges on the App Store app go away.
If not post back as further investigation will be needed.

Regards,
Carlo

Re: Repeated Mac App Store Updates

2012-08-04 Thread Alan Smith
Hi Carlo

Thanks for explanation and advice.

I Restarted iMac (just to start with a clean system) and checked my iiNet
account. Yes, Apple software downloads are still Freezone!

I resumed the App updates and (one) is downloading steadily.

What is the recommended practice for deleting the dmg file or whatever after
installing new or updated software? I downloaded onyX earlier today and had
to Restart before I could empty Trash. I got message to the effect that the
file was in use. Similar thing yesterday with a .dmg after a NeoOffice
update.

Cheers

Re: Repeated Mac App Store Updates

2012-08-04 Thread wa...@realworldcomputing.com.au
Hi Alan,

Apps downloaded through the App Store will clean up after themselves so no
further action is required. If you download a free application on a disk image
(.dmg file), the usual procedure is:

1) Mount the disk image, usually by double clicking on it in Finder.
2) Drag the app from the disk image to the Applications folder.
3) Eject the disk image by right clicking on it in the Finder sidebar and
selecting Eject.
4) Delete the .dmg file.

Sometimes a disk image will not eject because you are viewing its contents in
Finder or have, say, a README file from the image open. You can in these
circumstance select Force Eject when offered the option.

For software that I purchase and download from sources other than the App
Store, I usually keep a copy of the .dmg (or .pkg, or .mpkg) file, along with
the serial number and any activation codes. This is not necessary for App Store
purchases as the activation key is basically your Apple ID and you can again
download the software from the App Store if required.

Carlo

Re: Repeated Mac App Store Updates

2012-08-04 Thread Alan Smith
Hi Carlo

Both iPhoto and iMovie downloaded (and installed) normally after resuming the
App Store update process. But Finder shows both apps have the original 2
August installation dates (both the Added and Modified fields). So it appears
the new downloads were just abandoned when they found there was nothing to do!

I won't tempt fate and re-index the iPhoto library tonight. Got to save some
problems for tomorrow.

Thanks also for the disk image installation process. I don't think I ejected
the onyX file properly which probably explains the in use message from Trash.
Can't recall now, but probably a similar operator error with yesterday's
NeoOffice Trashing problem too.

Cheers
Alan

iPhoto'11 9.3.2 iMovie'11 9.0.6 updates

2012-07-25 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi People,

Apple has released iPhoto ’11 9.3.2, a small update that brings that brings
compatibility to the sharing new features in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. In
addition to performance and stability improvements, the update now enables you
to share photos via Twitter as well as Messages (Mountain Lion’s replacement
for iChat). ($14.99 new from the Mac App Store, free update through Software
Update or the Mac App Store, 669.7 MB via Software Update or 637 MB via Apple’s
support page)

Amidst an onslaught of updates geared toward adding Mountain Lion compatibility
to its slate of apps, Apple has released iMovie '11 9.0.7 with nary a mention
of the big cat in its release notes. Instead, the update focuses on improving
overall stability with fixes for preventing a crash that could be caused by
third-party QuickTime components, previewing MPEG-2 video clips in the Camera
Import window, and not including audio when importing MPEG-2 video clips from a
camera. It also bundles the improvements — including support for the MacBook
Pro with Retina Display — found in the last update (see iMovie ’11 9.0.6, 13
June 2012). ($14.99 new from the Mac App Store, free update through Software
Update or the Mac App Store, 1.08 GB via Software Update or 1.01 GB via Apple’s

Hi Stephen,

David Pogue opines that the new MacPro and iMacs are due next year. Here's a
link to a MacRumors article on the subject:

http://www.macrumors.com/2012/06/11/david-pogue-new-imacs-and-mac-pros-coming-probably-in-2013/

Also Tim Cook in a reply to an email said:

Our pro customers are really important to us...don't worry as we're working on
something really great for later next year.

Re: Updates Dmg Files

2011-08-25 Thread Daniel Kerr

Hi Brett

Just to follow on from Ronni's, after checking the size is all correct a couple
of things to try.
Assuming you've repaired Permissions?
You can also try removing these files (to the desktop)
Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.frameworks.diskimages.uiagent
Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.diskimages.fsck
Remove those and restart and see how it goes.
Also, rather then double clicking them to open, Open Disk Utility then from the
File Menu see if you can Open them manually that way.

I had hit this a couple of times before, but it was quite a while ago (as in
about 10.4 I think, and it was to do with an iTunesX.plist Receipt file. But I
can't find the links to it again.
And another it was a corruption that occurred at the OS level, which was quite
bad and had to reinstall the OS. Which wasn't too much of a big deal as it just
overwrote what was there and correct the problem.
You could also try reinstalling the last Combo Update for what you're running.
If you're on 10.5, then that would be the 10.5.8 Combo Update and 10.6 would be
the 10.6.8v1.1 Combo Update.

Hope that helps.
If no luck what are a few of the dmgs of? General updates? OS updates?

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: Updates for things under Lion

2011-07-21 Thread Rod Lavington
Appleworks will never work as it is a PowerPC app, and Rosetta is not in
Lion. You either have to set up.a dual boot system with 10.6 and 10.7, or
look for alternatives such as iwork and bento.

Re: Updates for things under Lion

2011-07-21 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi localadmin,

We covered this fairly thoroughly back in June.
On 09/06/11 one post Re: Preparation for Lion from myself mentioned this:
Prepare For Lion OS X 10.7

1. Make sure your Mac can run Lion:

Your Mac must have an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon
processor to run Lion.
Find out if your current Mac has one of these processors by clicking the Apple
icon at the top left of your screen, then choosing About This Mac.

2. Make sure you have the latest version of Snow Leopard.

Get up to date with the latest version of OS X Snow Leopard to purchase OS X
Lion from the Mac App Store. If you have Snow Leopard, click the Apple icon and
choose Software Update to install the latest version.

3. Check your Applications

A) Use System Profiler to check all your Applications. Go to About This Mac
under the Apple Menu, and click the More Info button. This will launch System
Profiler.

Scroll down the list of contents at the left of the window until you get to the
Software section and click on Applications.

Give the list a few moments to populate, then look for your application in the
list. Widen the window if necessary until you see the Kind column. You can
sort this column by clicking on the column header to make searching easier.

Any items labelled Classic or PowerPC will not work with Lion.
ONLY Universal Intel will run in Lion OS X 10.7

B) Check all your Applications you might be running and see if they have
updates.

C) Clean Up your computer. Uninstall old software you no longer use or require
(if you don’t have the uninstaller for the application, download use
AppZapper (which is not free) http://www.appzapper.com/ or AppCleaner (free)
http://appcleaner.en.softonic.com/mac
I prefer using AppZapper to delete any applications.

D) Delete any old files you no longer need.

E) If you use any add-on software such as plug-ins for mail or programs that
rely on input managers such as 1Password Google Desktop, make sure you have
upgraded to Lion-compatible versions before you upgrade.

4. Download OS X Lion from the Mac App Store.
When OS X Lion is released in July, open the Mac App Store from your Dock to
buy and download it.
Then follow the onscreen instructions to install Lion.

DON’T FORGET:
1. Backup your system BEFORE installing

2. Repair Permissions before installing

3. Turn OFF Time Machine in System Preferences

4. Unmount Disconnect any External USB Firewire Drives / Time Machine

5. Run Software Update after installing

7. Repair Permissions

8. Connect your Backup Drive

9. Go to System Preferences Time Machine and Turn Time Machine ON
Let Time Machine complete a backup.

** Apple warning for installing Updates:
Do not interrupt the installation process once you have started to update your
system.

As I have said numerous times on WAMUG List “Do Not Upgrade if anything is
amiss with your system”.

As is the case with all upgrades/updates, if there’s anything at all amiss with
your system before the upgrade/update, the upgrade/update is likely to expose
them.
——
Then Peter mentioned this about Appleworks:
On 25/06/11 one post Re: Preparation for LION, from Peter Hinchliffe mentioned
this:

AppleWorks WP files - will open in Pages (iWork)
AppleWorks Spreadsheet files - will open in Numbers (iWork)
AppleWorks Database files - export as text files and open with Bento
(www.filemaker.com)
AppleWorks Drawing files - Open with Intaglio
(http://www.purgatorydesign.com/Intaglio/) or Eazydraw
(http://www.eazydraw.com/ - NOT the App Store version)
AppleWorks Presentation files - will open in Keynote (iWork)

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Installing updates

2010-09-02 Thread Jon Davison

Hi Ronda. Thanks for your very detailed response. I tried the
installer as you suggested but there is no sign of 'Disk Utility' on
the instal disk at the
stage you mention. So I installed 10.5 from the original disk anyway
and archived the existing OS. It has allowed me to upgrade to 10.5.8
so at the

very least the upgrade is working.
But I will try again. Once I have chosen the language, it goes direct
to choose options etc, ie erase and instal, or archive and instal etc,
so there is

no info on Disk Utility?

This is with the two instal disks that came with the MacPro. Am I
missing something?

Thanks again
Kind regards

E) Run Software Update and install any updates.

If you cannot install the Combo Update after doing A and B.
Start into Safe Mode.
By holding down the Shift key from the moment you hear the startup

Expect this startup to take longer than usual.
Don't be alarmed if the fans whirl loudly during the spinning gear

You must be very careful not to go too far into the installer application when
you boot from the Install DVD. Note that Ronni pointed out that you must NOT
click the Continue button in the first screen of the Installer (step 2 in her
notes). Keep your eye on the Menu Bar at the top of the screen. When the
Installer menu first appears, that's when you will have access to Disk Utility.
If you click Continue again, you'll go too far.

Yes, this process could have been better designed, and if remember correctly it
actually has been improved in the Snow Leopard Installer.

Be careful when updating to Snow Leopard making sure that you have no

wondering if there are any ideas out there as to when Ilife 09,
Iwork 09 would/could be updated in the near future, ( am running
08 at the moment )

TIA

Thanks for that Stuart,
I am aware of the Mac Box Set which I will get, I just didn't
want to spend the money at this time if Ilife / Iwork 09 was going to
be updated in January 2010, if it was then I would get it then, but
if no-one knows then I will get it shortly.

Be careful when updating to Snow Leopard making sure that you have
no hidden fine of Time Machine otherwise you will not be able to
install Swine Leopard unless you go to Terminal and delete/edit

I don't know enough about hidden file but Macs-4-u sorted my iMac so

2009-10-24 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Bill,

I would think iLife '10 possibly iWork '10 will be updated in the
next 4-5 months.

Macworld 2010 - February 9-13, 2010 might be a release date? .

The updated versions I would expect take advantage of the new core
services in Snow Leopard and be 64-bit.

But that would mean they will only run on Snow Leopard.

If you need iLife '09 iWork '09 the Mac Box Set is a good price.
Otherwise wait until next year for the updated versions.

Hi Bob

If you're installing them via Software update, then it will download all
necessary ones at the same time, then restart. Sometimes, others will
require a restart for that particular update then show more updates due to
the previous install.
For example. If you were running say 10.5.6 you will some some updates show
up but you won't see more that required 10.5.8. From memory two of these is
Java 10.5 Update 4 and Safari 4.0.3. They require 10.5.7 at least before
they show up. So when you run Software Update you will see most of the
update (including 10.5.8). Then once you've installed them, restarted and
then Software Update opens again, it will show new updates to be installed
(the above ones, of which Safari requires a restart).

Others, such as Bluetooth Firmware Update and iMac EFI updates also require
separate updates, as they adjust the Firmware for each individual Update.

However
If you manually download the Updates and install them manually themselves
you can bypass this restart. The trick to it, is to install each update,
but when it comes up saying to Restart, you just put this to one side and
then run the next Update.
An example of this would be the Digital Camera RAW Update 2.6 which requires
a restart, or Airport Update. These come up and say Restart. But if I'm
doing a lot of updates I will just run this, ignore Restart, then go to the
next update. Once I've done all of them, then I click Restart and they all
install and the computer restarts.
Of course, there will still be more updates, that show to install, as per my
first example above.
But it does make the overall process a little bit faster.
Especially if I've got three computers to set up before going out to
clients. (Plus I have all the installs saved on disk, so it saves
downloading over 1Gb of installs per each new computer!) :o)

Hope that sort of answers your questions, or what you were referring to.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Hi Bob

Then the info after my however should be the way to go. :o)
I use that here most of the time, and it works well.
Just manually install them and don't click the Restart until you've done all
of them. Though if it's a firmware update for anything (Bluetooth or EFI) I
tend to do those each separately.
Hope that helps.

Bob

Generally, those installations which require a restart are installing
or patching vital components which exist at the System level of the
operating system. These components are typically loaded at startup
time, not when launching applications or any other on-the-fly
activity.

The problem is that updates can make changes to some of these
resources such that the code is significantly altered is ways that
will affect already-running software to the point where it might
crash, or worse, become damaged in some way.

To safeguard against all this, Software Update requires a restart
after installing components which might potentially cause such issues.
In fact, Leopard takes this a step further by requiring you to quit
everything BEFORE installing anything. By the same token, SU also
informs of which updates will require a restart. You have the choice
of installing these independently of those that don't.

Generally, those installations which require a restart are installing

The problem is that updates can make changes to some of these

To safeguard against all this, Software Update requires a restart
after installing components which might potentially cause such issues.
In fact, Leopard takes this a step further by requiring you to quit
everything BEFORE installing anything. By the same token, SU also
informs of which updates will require a restart. You have the choice
of installing these independently of those that don't.

With some of these updates, yes I agree. But if they are all listed in
Software Update, then surely you're doing the same thing it's doing,.it
downloads all say 10 updates (even if 3 need restarts) all at the same time,
then it restarts once, once all of them are upgraded.
Doing it manually, surely would be doing the same thing?
Happy to be proven wrong and change my method, but can't say I've ever had a
problem yet.

If it's an EFI or say Bluetooth Firmware Update then I'll do those
separately to patch Firmware individually with a restart after each one.

Downloading Mac updates under Widows

2009-03-16 Thread Ray Forma
At work, where I am forced to work on a M$ Windows computer, the
Internet bandwidth is magnitudes faster than here at home. However,
if I try to download updates for QuickTime and iTunes from the Apple
site, I am only offered versions for varieties of Windows.

Does anyone know of a way of getting Mac version updates for
QuickTime and iTunes through a Widows computer? Otherwise I will have
to do overnight downloads on the slow home link.

Re: Downloading Mac updates under Widows

2009-03-16 Thread Kyle Kreusch
Hi Ray,
the easiest way without getting into Web browser user agents. Would be
to use MacUpdate To download the updates

QuickTime 7.6 (Leopard only)
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7964/apple-quicktime

iTunes 8.1
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/5661/apple-itunes

Also you will require the Front Row Update as it stops working

Bios updates?

2008-06-22 Thread KEVIN Lock
I have purchased 512mb of SD ram 168 pin to fit in a 1 ghz eMac.
The Ram doesn't show up in the eMac, but does offer 256mb when
slotted into a few other G3s. The supplier suggests that I upgrade
the bios

Is upgrading the bios a Mac thing or just for PCs?

Thanks for any info,

Hi Kevin,

Thank God there is no Bios in any Mac.
That would not have even been good advice from the vendor even if you
had a PC, RAM is either right or wrong there is little adjustment
available in any BIOS.

Sounds like you have the wrong 'flavoured' RAM.

Kev ,

This link goes to a site that explains the numbering on some chips.

Your chip might have some indication in addition to what you have
sent ... maker name in particular.

Part of that code may represent the maker but I do not recognise it .

Firmware updates

Since 9 April I've had eight automatic firmware updates from Apple.
For example 2008-04-21 16:50:43 +0800: Installed iMac EFI Firmware
Update (1.3) But the description on all of them seems the same.
Have I had eight different updates, or am I getting the same one over

It's my impression that SU does its thing based on the last time it
ran: so if you have it set to check on a daily basis, and you run it
at, say, 9:00 am, it will run again at 9:00 am the next day. If you
run it again that day at 4:00 pm, it will run at 4:00 pm the
following day. The same applies if you have it set to check weekly:
if you run it at 9:00 on Friday, it will run a 9:00 am the following
Friday.
