Favorite Disc from TAGS DVDs
Lots of talk about favorite and least favorite episodes, but let's try this for a poll...What is your favorite disc from the TAGS DVD series? (I'm talking about the complete season DVDs, not the 50th Anniversary DVD set or any of the other one-offs.) For me, there is no contest...it is Season Four, Disc One. That disc has both my favorite episode of the entire series ("Sermon For Today") and my wife's favorite ("Briscoe Declares for Aunt Bee"). Another of my top 5 or 10 episodes is "Gomer the Houseguest". The disc also has "Opie the BIrdman", "The Haunted House", "Ernest T. Bass Joins the Army" and "Black Day for Mayberry". Not a lemon in the whole bunch! I would also say season 4 is probably my favorite season, as the cast really was hitting its stride then...Andy had lost the real hayseed image that was portrayed in the early seasons, and the chemistry between Andy and Barney was really at the top of its game. Alumni Sighting
Here is a bit of an unusual alumni siting...I live in Lincoln, home of the University Nebraska. I just ran across an archive photo with Jim Nabors and former Nebraska football Coach Bob Devaney. Devaney coached from 1962-71, so I'm assuming the photo was during that period, and likely the early 70's based on the fashions and Jim's hair. The photo was published as part of a story on Nebraska's former Sports Information Director Don Fox Bryant who just died last week. Fox knew everybody in the world, it seems, so I suspect he somehow knew someone who knew Jim Nabors and Jim ended up visiting the university...possibly he was doing a concert at our state fair or somewhere else in Nebraska. Here is a link to the article and photo (check out the Go Big Red tie--it sure beats a purple tie with yellow acorns!): Don Fox Bryant: Part of the Husker Tradition | Hail Varsity | | | | | | | | | | | Don Fox Bryant: Part of the Husker Tradition | Hail Va...The Mike Riley era at Nebraska officially began on Friday. Rusty Stevens
I took a quick look at the video for One Punch Opie, and while there is a character in that scene that resembles Rusty Stevens/Larry Mondello, I don't see how it can be Rusty. Rusty was born in 1948, making him 6 years older than Ron Howard. He would have been 14 at the time of One Punch Opie. Also, if you watch Leave It to Beaver, he was taller than Jerry Mathers, who was about the same age, so unless he was on his knees for this scene, I don't see how this could have been Rusty/Larry Mondello. I know this is a discussion of TAGS, but did anyone else ever think that Madge Blake as Mrs. Mondello was more suited age-wise to be Larry's grandmother? One other quick comment and I'm out of here...did anyone ever notice a resemblence between Ronnie Schell (Duke Slater on GP, USMC) and Beaver's friend, Gilbert Bates (played by Stephen Talbot)? I know they weren't related, but I was always struck by the similarities in their mannerisms. Maybe it's just me... FYI, Stephen Talbot's father was Lyle Talbot, a long-time character actor who played Ozzie Harriett's friend Joe Randolph among others (he grew up in Brainard, Nebraska). Skol Mayberry
Skol seems entirely out of place in Mayberry, as I just don't picture there being a lot of scandanavians in the south. I know, I know, men are orbiting the moon, so it's possible some of them have moved to Mayberry...maybe Otis is a Viking by birth. By the way, a little off topic for mayberry, but the Minnesota Vikings fight song is called Skol Vikings...check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgRjBIcFz5o. Green Paint
Just a quick comment on the green paint...maybe this has already been said...I haven't had much time lately to read the Digest in detail, but my recollection is that the green walls appeared with the first color episode in season 6. If so, I'm guessing that the walls were painted that way to make the best possible shading for black white filming from earlier seasons. Mrs. Grayson
Here's my take on how Mrs. Grayson found Floyd...once Floyd hatched his plan and Andy agreed, he sent a telegram to Mrs. Grayson, giving her the address of the house he would be at (and maybe turn-by-turn directions to get there). I don't recall if Mrs. Grayson's letter said what time she would be arriving in Mayberry, so Floyd and Andrew Paul Lawson may have had to spend most of the day there. If Mrs. Grayson was a bit of a fake as well, where did she get the car? I haven't watched in a while, but seem to recall that it was a Lincoln Continental. The Tailor Shop
The story from Rance Howard in the e-Bullet about how Andy ended up with Taylor as his last name, after first being called Andy Hopper in rehearsals for the pilot got me to thinking. They ended up not using Hopper and missing out on a joke in that episode but some six years later, the writers finally did work in a joke with Andy's last name when he was trying to call the picture studio and kept getting transferred to the Tailor Shop. Keith in Nebraska P.S. When Andy was running for Sheriff, Win With Hopper wouldn't have had the same ring as Win With Taylor. Me-TV Network
There has been some confusion over whether Me-TV or other national networks can show TAGS. Me-TV is a national network, just like TVLand. TVLand currently has the exclusive national network rights to TAGS, so Me-TV, RTV, My-TV or other national networks have no chance to pick up the series during TVLand's contract. All series in syndication can also be licensed to local stations across the country, and each local station licensing TAGS has the exclusive rights to show TAGS in that local market. So if Station X in Omaha licenses TAGS, stations Y Z have no chance to get the show until the license expires. Me Too TV is an off-shoot of Me-TV, but is operated as a local station rather than a national network. It appears there are only Me Too stations in Chicago and Milwaukee. So if they show TAGS, they are the exclusive carrier for that local marketit's as confusing as finding Aunt Bee's spoon on the set of The Mayberry Chef! Washington Behind Closed Doors
I remember this mini-series. It is based on a novel, The Company, written by John Ehrlichman, and loosely based on the Nixon administration with a Watergate-like scandal. Andy plays the former President Esker Scott Anderson (think LBJ). Jason Robards is very good as President Richard Monckton (Nixon). If you like political dramas, it is a good series, although probably a little tame by today's standards (but that's alright with me). The novel is also a good read. I think I have the mini-series on VHS tapes recorded 20+ years ago, so who knows if the tape has disintigrated yet? Re the 2005 calendar, I'm a little confused...a couple of good folks said you could use it for the first 59 days of 2012. Seems to me it's off (Luther, it was off) right from the start, since January 1, 2005 was a Saturday, not a Sunday. We did, in fact, use our 2005 TAGS calendar throughout 2011 and just put it back in storage for the next opportunity. Someone mentioned that calendars only repeat themselves every 28 years, but it seemed to work out that 2005 and 2011 matched up. There will be a bare spot on my wall for at least the next 12 months. Floyd's Glasses
I don't have any insight on the change in Floyd's glasses, but I always thought that the glasses contributed to the fact that Floyd looked much older when he returned from his stroke (obviously his health also affected that older appearance). I think the glasses really fit Floyd's personality/demeanor when he returned to the show. I was shocked when I first found out his actual age, in that he was only about 57 when he had his stroke and he would have only been in his early 60's when he left the series, dying at the age of 63 in 1969. He easily looked to be upper 60s or 70 after his stroke. I have always enjoyed Floyd's speech and mannerisms after his stroke...I would have loved to see or hear an interview (outside his Floyd character) around that time as I have heard from those on the show that he was very similar in and out of character...don't know if that applied to both pre-stroke and post-stroke. Real Life Brother and Sister on TAGS
I can't believe it...for once I know the answer to a TAGS trivia question, but the probably everyone else knows it as well. Jack Albertson played cousin Bradford Taylor and his sister Mabel Albertson played Mrs. Sprague. Hard to believe Mrs. Sprague was only in four episodes. Seems like she was in more than that. Here's another curiosity...Mabel Albertson was never married, but played some of our favorite mothers on TV in the 60's. Besides Mrs. Sprague, she was also Darin Stephens' mother on Bewitched and Don Hollinger's mother on That Girl. IMDB says she played a mother-in-law on an episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1975 as well. Thinking of cousin Bradford makes me hungry for homemade ice cream. Since I'm headed for a haircut right after work today, I was reminded of the Taylor's visit to Hollywood in Season 6. It always seemed to me that both of the episodes while they were in Hollywood.Opie's looked like he had just gotten a haircut before they left Mayberry. Has anybody else noticed that? None of that vanity to Opie--he didn't mind looking like he had just gotten a haircut--although he probably didn't like those hairs that fell down the back of his shirt. I guess when everybody else went to the barbershop their trims were just enough to get a trim without looking like they had a haircut, because everybody getting out of the barber chair looked just like they did when they sat down in the chair! Size of Shows
There's been a lot of talk about the size of shows (as in number of cast appearing), but I want to raise another comment on the size of shows--or more precisely, the length. I will have to admit that I hardly ever watch TAGS on TVLand because (A) They play too many commercials, (2) They play too many trashy commercials/show promos, and (C) They edit the show. The other weekend they were running a Bewitched marathon, and I noticed that the start times of the shows were around 36 minutes apart. I thought maybe they were running uncut episodes with their usual excessive allotment of commericals. However, just for kicks, I timed one episode and found out they weren't running their usual excessive allotment of commercials--they were running MORE THAN USUAL. The episode I timed clocked in at 19:40 (including opening and closing credits running over the epilogue), in a 36-minute window. They should have made it a 40 minute window so they could run a full 50% commercials/promos. Are they butchering TAGS that severely these days? I don't know if I could sit through all the junk to find out--it would be worse than a night with Uncle Ollie riding his bicycle and putting his arm in my mouth! Biggest Guest Star on TAGS
As for the biggest/most famous guest star appearing on TAGS at the time the episode aired, I would probably vote for either Buddy Ebsen or Bill Bixby, although both appeared on TAGS just prior to becoming more famous with their own starring roles in television. Interesting to note that TAGS never had someone appearing as himself or herself on the series. John Wayne's appearances in both I Love Lucy and the Beverly Hillbillies were as himself, as was Danny Thomas' appearance in The Dick Van Dyke Show. In a way, it would seem a bit out of place to have somebody like that show up in Mayberry, even though it was always fun to hear them talk about their favorite celebrities (Ceasar Romero, Gary Cooper, Rock Hudson, Cary Grant, Gabby Hayes, etc.) as well as the fictional celebrities that we did see like Keevy Hazelton and Tina Andrews. Opie's Brother on The Waltons
Seeing the reference to The Waltons the other day, I remembered that I always thought Jason Walton (played by Jon Walmsley) was a dead ringer for Ron Howard's brother--at least that's what I thought when I saw the show back in the 1970's. I thought of Jason as being Opie's older brother, but in fact Jon is about four years younger than Ron--guess I was used to seeing Ron in the 60's and Jason in the 70's. I haven't seen any recent pictures of Jason, but did anybody else out there see a resemblence between Jason and Opie? Speaking of Ron, do any of you remember the series The Smith Family, starring Henry Fonda as a detective and Ron Howard as his son? It only aired for one or two seasons in the early 1970's a few years before Happy Days. It was a 30 minute show, something of a comedy-drama mix. Can't believe it didn't last longer with star power like that. I would love to see some of those episodes again, does anybody know if any are in existence on VHS or DVD? I would probably rank The Wedding (a/k/a Howard's Bachelor Pad) as my second favorite color episode all-time (behind Dinner at Eight). I really enjoy the interplay between the characters in the episode and there are some great lines of dialogue. Glad to hear that Helen needs to get up early for Sunday School--you think she was a teacher there, too? Probably taught Opie's class. I, too, was flumoxed by Goober turning down food--even if the party were a bit of a bust, you would think Goober would be happy for a chance to eat. Andy's tie, lap blanket and ride to work
Re Malcom Merriweather putting a lap blanket on Andy when he got in the back seat of the car--I thought it was doubly odd--not only was it only a two block ride to the Government House as Malcom called it (as dan pointed out), but it was also a warm day. Earlier, when Andy was seated for breakfast, Malcom handed him the newspaper and said the temperature was 70 something. If it's already in the 70's before 8 in the morning, it's probably going to be a mighty warm day--at least where I come from here in Nebraska. I don't ever recall needing a lap blanket on a day like that. BTW, I don't recall the name (maybe it was Clara), but there was some conversation earlier in that episode, I think between Andy Barney mentioning that someone was leaving their car parked in Andy's driveway--that dialogue might have been snipped out of what was on TVLand. Keith in Nebraska (hoping for double dollups of afters tonight!) In answer to Weenie Man's question about Andy's tie. My take on Mr. Schwamp's pocket is a fountain pen and his reading glasses. The essence of a character in a single quote
While watching the episode Howard Millie (season 8) last night, Howard has a line that, to me, summarizes the essence of his character. As Andy re-enters the train compartment, Howard has just taken off his shoes. He says to Andy, Without the proper amount of tension, you might as well not even use shoe trees at all. That cuts to the heart of what Howard is all about.
