Clara Edwards
While watching the color episode about the Battle of Mayberry, Clara Edwards shows Opie a sword belonging to her ancestor, Col. Edwards, which would imply she never married. Now in Mayberry time, several years before this episode (b/w) when Clara convinced Aunt Bee to give Andy and Helen more time to be alone, she said something about her son, Gale. That's a brain teaser, or a fact overlooked or forgotten. Then there is the brief time she was Clara Johnson. Who's got a bucket to put on their head to think about that tangled web? Elizabeth in Ga My deducing this one is that Edwards is her maiden name and her husband was a Johnson. Post Office
I am sure this has been discussed before, but has there ever been an episode that showed the inside of the Post Office? I have noticed that there are a lot of episodes that mention the Post Office. Maybe that could be a challenge. List episodes that mention the Post Office. Also, has anyone ever wondered how the mail got delivered? I have seen episodes where Opie brings in a letter to Andy at the courthouse before going off to school, Andy drops off a package for Barney at the courthouse in the evening. I think I remember seeing a post man in the episode with Mr. Wheeler, but I am not sure. Any thoughts? Sandra Gore SandraThere was the episode when the Mailman refused to give the mail to Barney because he was not an "authorized receptacle". And Barney getting jealous over the quality of Wanted posters at the Courthouse compared to the Post Office. And yes, it was George the Mailman who discovered "soft hands Wheeler" that lead Andy to make a phone call and bust the Wheeler case wide open. And of course Barney giving the stranger (female) in town a police escort to the Post office. A couple weeks ago in one of his excellent Mayberry History posts, Randy Turner mentioned something in the episode "Bringing Up Opie" that occurred only once in TAGS: Otis actually being formally charged with public intoxication before being sentenced. Watching that episode recently, I think I found another unique moment: after Opie leaves the abandoned mine, he walks down the dirt road, kicking a can, until meeting an older boy who lets Opie have some apples and sit in the back of the truck if Opie lets him kick the can. That maybe 20 second scene is totally silent, except for the background music (which I think is the only time I heard that particular music in any episode). The older boy is clearly talking to Opie - but we don't hear anything. This small scene reminds me a lot of the old, original "Our Gang" movies, before they became "talkies". I wonder if this was intentional, as a sort of tribute to those old films, or just that the writers or director were influenced by "Our Gang", which they probably watched as kids. Do any of the "trained observers" out there recall any other "silent" scene in TAGS like this one? (I'm not counting the episode where Gomer joins the Marines, and Sgt. Carter polishes his boots, etc. which is also "silent", because I think of that episode as the first "Gomer Pyle, USMC" episode.) Joe from G.I. Joe, If I am understanding your question correctly I believe the episode when Ellie is running for city council (silly idea) and the men folk decide to show them wimmin how silly an idea it is, shut down their credit lines at the department stores, you see, but don't hear the exchanges with the women and the store clerks along with musical instruments playing along with the scene. Aunt. Bee's Husband pick

Who would you choose for a husband for Aunt Bee? Elizabeth in Ga Well I am probably in the minority here but I really wished she would have hooked up with Mr. Wheeler. Improvising in Mayberry
Here's a question for you experts. In the episode where Sheldon is extorting Opies nickel, there is a scene when Andy and Aunt Bee go in the kitchen and she is going to give Andy a slice of apple pie. But after slicing it she goes to put it on a plate and then realizes there is no plate. She has to turn to the cabinet behind her and as she does, Andy asks her if she is a little flustered. It seems to me that someone errored. Either there was supposed to be a plate on the table, but it wasn't there, or maybe she was supposed to grab the plate first. I don't know, but it just seems a bit off. Yet Andy and Aunt Bee just improvise and keep on going.Just curious if anyone else has ever thought the same thing about that scene, and if there are other times something of this nature has happened. Nice dress Nellie
With all the discussions about Nice dress Nellie going on, I need to add something that I am hoping someone can confirm or set me straight on.Several years ago I was watching an episode of My Three Sons on our local PBS station. Actually I had just turned on the television and caught the last few minutes of an episode. And sitting there on the Douglas sofa was, I do believe, Nice Dress Nellie. I am almost certain it was her, but, the older I get, the less certain I am anymore about anything. But if it wasn't her, it was her twin. And here is the kicker. She spoke. And she spoke with a very powerful accent. Not sure were she was from and if the accent was real or just the actress of the woman. I mentioned on Allan's old Bulletin Board, but never got much response on it.So I am wondering if anyone here has ever seen the episode I am talking about? The other day while musing, I came up with this TAGS trivia question. There are at least 3 instances of residents of Mayberry being played by more than one actor. There might even be more than 3, but that is all I could think of.2 of the answers are fairly easy, but the third person is pretty obscure. Let's see if anyone can get all 3, or even surprise me and think of more. Orville Hendricks - Mount Pilot Butter and Egg Man. re: Ron McLendon's deducing
I've mentioned this before and I'll go out on a limb and mention it again. I really do NOT think Rafe said what some seem to think, and here's why: Growing up, my dad would give half a laugh or a partial chuckle at something that amused him and begin his reply with "Well". Many times, he'd start to say "Well" and the half a laugh would slip itself in. So rather than, "Heh, well", it would come out, "We-heh-ll". I remember that from 60 years ago and to this day, it'll still come about. The very first time I heard Rafe utter that, I recognized it as the same sounding reply my dad used. I'm not being obtuse, just my observance from my detective training. I have not watched it with CC turned on, so I don't know what they script on the screen. In fact, I catch myself doing the same thing on occasions. Ron **Barn McLendon I agree with your thought out reasoning Ron. Today uttering that on television is common place. But back then, and in Mayberry no less, I just don't think it would be. But on the bright side, it gives us something to talk about. Raised entryway:
Anyone ever notice that on the first episode, the entryway to Andy's home was raised? Anyone else notice this? Can you think of an explanation or reason? I have noticed that also Woody. After much studying on the subject I came to this conclusion. Andy's house must have started leaning to one side because he had been short sighted in digging a drainage ditch to drain water away. So then he dug another ditch on the other side and ran water down it to lower that side. But it lowered to much. Well, just as Floyd keeps trimming sideburns to even them out, ending up with nothing left, by the time Andy got the house even, it was low enough that he now needed to step up to go out. I suspect later, when "Federal Funding" became available, he was able to raise the house back to its original height, and do away with the step up. But I will admit, maybe I am over thinking it. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Repeated lines
It's interesting to note the recurrence of certain lines in different TAGS episodes- such as "Don't look back" as spoken by Barney to Hubcaps Lesh in "Barney's First Car" and in a later episode when Andy tells the same to a forlorn Barney when he gives up his motorcycle in "Barney's Sidecar". Noticing new things.
I love it when I notice something I've never noticed before On tonight's episode Up in Barney's Room, a camera angle really threw me for a loop. When Opie and Andy are strolling on Main Street and Opie points out that the lights are on in the court house, you could clearly see the gun rack through the court house window on the cells' side. At the angle the camera was showing it should have been the bulletin board. The gun rack was much too far over towards the window in relationship to the window on the sheriff's desk side. Apparently the stage director flunked art class titled "perspective". LOL! That is some good noticing Harriet. I enjoy that also. Last night when watching Bad Boy Bailey, although I have seen the episode numerous times, for the first time I noticed last night when he got back in his speed machine, he shifted the steering wheel over to his left. Thunderbirds in that period featured rather than a "tilt" steering wheel like cars have today, instead a steering wheel that you could shift to the right to ease getting in and out of the car. All the times I have seen that episode, I had never noticed that. Another thing I have often wondered about. In the episode with the bully, Andy and Aunt Bee go in the kitchen and Aunt Bee goes to give Andy the last slice of apple pie. It's only after she has lifted it out with her spatula, that she realizes she doesn't have a plate to put it on. She then turns around and gets one from behind her. Andy kind of laughs and says "what's wrong, you a little flustered?" That little part seems like to me was a boo boo. Someone forgot to have a plate there on the table ready for her, and both her and Andy improvised that part. Anyone else ever feel that was the case? ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

The word "Christmas" need not be specifically mentioned; for example if someone says something like "three wise men bearing gifts" or "flying reindeer in the sky," that counts as mentioning Christmas. Thinking buckets on and ... Go! Paul Mulik In the episode where Opie finds the wallet he talks about it's like having two Christmases in one year, ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Dave Ramsey/ Barney Fife
A few days ago there was a Mayberry reference on The Dave Ramsey Show. If anyone is unfamiliar with this program, it is a radio show where folks call in with questions about money. A caller wanted to know Dave's opinion on homeowners' associations. His response was that most of the time they're fine, but once in a while you'll get one with a "Barney Fife" in charge, in other words, someone who abuses their limited authority and makes everybody miserable with their nitpicking attention to every minor regulation. I wonder what Dave would think about the financial habits of certain folks in Mayberry? Such as Barney trying to sell real estate, Aunt Bee trying to save money by buying a large quantity of beef, or a stranger turning up with a treasure map trying to convince locals to invest in his scheme. Paul Mulik Well Paul, I give Dave kudos for calling him Fife instead of Fice for starters. Secondly I suspect Dave's council to any of them would be "get out of debt first and foremost". ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
RE: Contentment
Very good points Ken. Two episodes that really illustrate that for me is "Man in a hurry" when we see a very content Mr. Tucker, snoozing on the front porch with a partial peeled apple in his hand. The second is an episode I never really cared for until again the final scene. It's the episode where Howard quits his job and moves to a deserted island. But the very end, after Howard returns, sitting with the guys in front of the service station, drinking a pop. The look of complete contentment on Howards face says it all. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Heat in the Courthouse
The three ways that I can think of to heat the Mayberry courthouse were gas heater, furnace and steam radiator. I know in the episode Andy saves Gomer there is a gas heater and in the episode The Luck of Newton Monroe there is a furnace in the basement that Newton attempts to clean. Also I believe that in various shots of Mayor Pike's office there are steam radiators shown and I believe the Mayor's office was on the second floor of the courthouse. Good eye Russell, Along with the sighting of the steam radiators you mentioned, Andy in an episode spoke of a boiler leaking and flooding the Courthouse. I always figured the boiler was located behind that mysterious door that was there in season 1. If that's not the case though, please don't tell me. My nerves are fragile and may not be able to handle the truth. :) ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
re: Winter scenes of Mayberry
I don't believe it ever snowed in Mayberry. Never rained much either. In the Gold truck episode it was raining some while they were filming it. But I think that was for real an not part of the story line. Compared to the episode with Quiet Sam where it was storming and the wind was howling. That was part of the story line, as was the episode with the gypsies. But on the other hand, I noticed during the run of the show, the Courthouse utilized three different methods of heating the building. Anyone know wha those 3 different methods were? ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Well my friends, I managed to survive a very emotionally packed night at my 50 year high school reunion. So much fun reliving old times with old friends whom I have known since I was 6 years old. A few tears were even shed by this overemotional guy. We were a class of 81 and we have lost only 6 thus far, so we have indeed been very blessed in that regard. The group just loved my "Special Reunion Mayberry Presentation " I did. I received a standing ovation and so many wonderful comments following. Some of the people there had not watched a TAGS episode since it was on TV back in its hay day. They especially enjoyed the clip of Barney and Ramona's reunion and that beautiful quote "The tears on my pillow bespeak the pain in my heart". We had kept my presentation a secret and the looks I received when I arrived in full uniform and gun belt was precious. But word soon spread that I was not a real policeman and that was when the fun began. Time for me to purchase a new laptop. I was unable to load any of my videos and music clips at first and I was just sick as it would have ruined the entire evening. However, I was able to get off by myself and do some work and was finally able to get things going. Good thing I tested everything out when I got there and before I was to begin. Sometimes those electronal marvels can be a real pain in the patoot. I noticed the cord they provided had thin wires so I suspect that was the problem. So Ken, did you have to at least hold your laptop up to the microphone for folks to be able to hear it? ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Schwuamp Identity
Whew, I sure am glad he wasn't really identified. By now it is almost anti climatic if he was to be found out. Almost like when Howard caught "ole Sam". Besides, Barney buying cashew fudge every week would be out of character, considering how tight he was with money. Remember the time he delivered some ice cream (West Indian Licorice Mocha Delight) to Thelma Lou and expected her to pay for it? ("A good delivery boy always has change!")
