[John Graham]

I've been recovering from a recent hip replacement. Since I've been down,
I've been watching some of my recordings of old Columbo episodes. While
watching a second season episode titled "A Stitch In Crime", I saw Helen
Crump (Aneta Corsaunt), playing a very business like hospital nurse. She
was assisting a doctor, played by Leonard Nimoy, who was the murderer of
another nurse in the episode.

It was strange because she was playing a Russian Navy Officer.Long ways

Ken Anderson - alumni sightings - question needs answer

Watching Alias Smith & Jones last week and in one episode was Dub Taylor
and Joyce Jameson.
I recognized Mr. Taylor right away, but I didn't know it was Ms. Jameson
until the credits.  She played a saloon girl with dark hair.

Paul Mulik asked a question a few weeks ago on one of the FaceBook sites
about Amzie Strickland.  The question was about what she bought after the
first time of being on TAGS.  I never did see the answer.  So Paul could
you please tell WBMUTBB the answer.

Watching Peter Gunn (season 3 ep. 13) and there was Floyd. He worked for a bank 
and took over million dollars and admitted it. Idea behind it was to get the 
big shots of the bank to give all employees a pension plan. He must of gone to 
Mt. Pilot before this episode. He was wearing a nice suit

I noticed Rons teeth were really spaced apart and James was a man full of face 
unshaven 
hair like the Beatles style they both looked very different than on tags
I was doing some research on line and saw a 1966 ford truck with Emmitts fix it 
shop used in Griffith s 25 Anniversary show

Although I've seen this *Twilight Zone* episode before ("Back There"),
tonight I just realized that Emmett Clark (Paul Hartman) was the desk
sergeant in the Washington, D.C. precinct house on the night Lincoln was
assassinated.  It was a brief appearance, but he was convincing as a crusty
Irishman who refused to heed the warning of "the professor" from
"Gilligan's Island" (Russell Johnson) that Lincoln was in grave danger

The other night, I was watching "The Twilight Zone" episode titled "Black
Leather Jackets" about an impending alien invasion.  I thought the neighbor
looked familiar; it took a little while before I realized it was none other
than Denver Pyle (Briscoe Darling). Without any kind of an accent, and
dressed in nice clothes, it took me awhile to be sure it was really him.

Then, while watching a 1958 episode of "Gunsmoke", I thought the forlorn
wife of a rancher looked familiar, but with her accent and lack of make-up
I wasn't sure - then I looked it up and sure enough, it was Hope Summers
(Clara Edwards).

Both of them were far-removed from their Mayberry roles, showing how
versatile and talented they were.

Just watched an episode of "The Rifleman" from 1959 and saw Denver Pyle
(Briscoe Darling) appearing as an Irish immigrant who was sort of an
 "Otis". He sobered up and was hired by Chuck Connors to help at the ranch
- unfortunately, he was mistakenly killed by the bad guys.  He apparently
appeared in 5 "Rifleman" episodes, which I believe is close to his total
number of appearances on TAGS.

One more comment - the close father/son relationship of Lucas and Mark in
"The Rifleman" closely mirrors the close relationship of Andy and Opie in
TAGS - very nice to see.

to direct the church choir.   I may be wrong, but it seemed to me that they

   Saw Mayberry's own Millie Swanson on MeTV's MATLOCK Monday morning.It is 
a 2 part show and will finish Tuesday.She is accused of murdering some 
plastic surgeon.Andy is right there on the case to defend her.This was 
25 years after her first Mayberry appearance, so she was a little hard to 
recognize.

 Saturday morning on TCM, they were showing the 1955 movie "Many Rivers To 
Cross". One of the very first people on screen after the start of the movie 
was Thelma Lou.She was really young, but you could still recognize her. 
Also in the movie was Big Jeff Pruitt and the Hobo with the quarter of a 
million dollars.

I had a really weird alumni sighting Sunday morning. While I was eating 
breakfast, "The Monkees" were on MeTV.They were on a desert island, and 
there was an old jungle man played by Burt Mustin (Old Judd). What was really 
weird was that the role called for him to run around shirtless.Let me tell 
you something, Burt Mustin was a really skinny man.

Last night in an especially creepy "Alfred Hitchcock Hour" episode ("The
Jar"),  George Lindsey and James Best appeared together in a couple of the
scenes. George played a mentally-challenged man, and was excellent in that
role. James had a smaller role as the handsome boyfriend of a married
woman. The episode was made in 1964, right at the height of TAGS popularity.

Saturday morning on MeTV, I was watching an episode of "Have Gun Will Travel", 
and the outlaw in the episode was Sergeant Carter.He did not look much 
different than he did when he played on TAGS.

he's an outlaw. On one show Goober and Dud Wash were brothers. Today one I 
never expected to see in a western was "The man in a hurry" it was odd to see

Amazed how many TAGS Alumni show-up on other shows

Watching MEtv and there was a commercial/promo for Perry Mason.
You know how they 'flash' scenes from the upcoming show, well, there must  
have been 3 or 4 and alumni were in 2 of  them.  One was  Gentlemen Dan and 
the other was the gentleman who delivered the bows and arrows  to the young 
ones on the episode where Barney, who was with Gomer, got  lost.

   Our own Jim Lindsey was the person accused of the murder whom Perry 
defended.Right there in the middle of everything was The Stranger In Town, 
Ed Sawyer.And finally, the real guilty party was none other than C.J. 
Hasler, the big city thief.

 I also noted Mary Simpson on Monday's MeTV Perry Mason.I always thought 
that Mary Simpson was a strange character.   She was Andy's girlfriend, and 
Andy seemed to be close to her, even to the extent that Barney thought they 
were going to get married.But Sue Ann Langdon only appeared as Mary Simpson 
in one episode.Talk about being a fast worker.

TAGS alumni

I watched a most charming Disney movie this morning titled Follow Me 
Boys; it was the story of a would-be attorney setting aside his goals to 
lead a troop of Boy Scouts in a small town pre-WWII, starring Fred 
McMurray. I was delighted to see several TAGS alumni in many scenes of 
this film. I heartily recommend it.

TAGS alumni sightings

I just saw Andy's cousin Gloria (played by Jan Shutan) from "Guest in the 
House" episode on an original "Star Trek" episode. She played a new Starfleet 
Lt. in the episode "Lights from Zetar" whose brain was taken over by aliens. 
Scotty was falling in love with her. The funniest line was at the beginning 
when Mr. Chekov said, "I never thought Mr. Scott would fall for a brainy 
woman." To that, Mr. Sulu responded, "I don't think he's even noticed she HAS a 
brain." LOL! 

I also saw our very own TAGS crook Ralph Neal (played by Arthur Batanides) who 
captured Barney with the help of Old Blue in the TAGS episode "Barney's 
Bloodhound" in a different "Star Trek" episode "That Which Survives". He played 
another Lt. who was a senior geologist who beamed down to a planet with Kirk, 
Spock and Sulu. He was killed by the beautiful woman alien Losira who simply 
touched him and destroyed all his cells. The alien was played by none other 
than Lee Meriwether who also played Andy Griffith's wife Mary Elizabeth 
Whitehead in his movie "Angel in my Pocket". 

That just goes to show that TAGS is everywhere!

Hey, Mayberry friends. It's been a while since I've posted on the digest and 
let me say, I'm proud to be here. There were a couple of posts about Mayberry 
sightings so I'd thought I'd throw in my measley 3 cents worth. On December 7 
we celebrated Pearl Harbor Day (the Morrison Sisters were really busy) and I 
watched the movie "Tora! Tora! Tora" on TV about the attack on Pearl Harbor. 
After viewing the movie awhile I discovered there was a plethora (how would 
Barney say that?) of actors in this movie that had also played on TAGS so I 
began to write them down: Edward Andrews, the lecturer Professor Hobart St. 
John, who was enamored of Aunt Bee because she looked like his late wife. Norm 
Alden played Tom Strongbow and also one of the opponents in Howard the Bowler. 
William Schallert (Quiet Sam). Ken Lynch, who played several police officers 
and captains on TAGS. Leon Ames (not the peanut butter sandwich Leon) who was 
the school principal in 'The Senior Play'. George Neise, Roger Courtney from 
'The Club Men". Harlan Warde, the 'Spoiled Kid's' Dad. He also was in the 
episode 'Barney Fife, Realtor'. Edmon Ryan, who played one of the fake FBI 
agents (We Defy the Mafia!). Douglas McCairn was in the episode 'The Cannon', 
where he and his girlfriend were going to rob the mobile museum from Raleigh. 
There may have been more  (it was a long movie!)
I know it's a long post but I just had to share. I love wbmutbb and I love

 I had a rare treat this morning while watching a Sunday Morning edition of 
"Wagon Train" on MeTV.  I spotted no less than 4 different TAGS alumni all 
on one show from 1957.This was 3 years before TAGS ever went on the air.
First the dastardly wrongdoer was Uncle Ollie.Then 3 of the wagon people 
were Daphne, Luke Jensen, and Cpt. Barker (Ken Lynch).Quite a find, all in 
all.

Made a triple sighting today while watching GetTV.  On a 1958 episode of Yancy 
Derringer, I saw Woody Chambliss (Harlan Robinson / Mr. Hendricks), Chubby 
Johnson (Mr. Carter), and John Qualen (Henry Bennett).  Mr. Chambliss played 
the part of "Captain Tom", Mr. Johnson was "Spinner", and Mr. Qualen was 
"Captain Sven Larsen".  Kinda nice to get three for one.

   Sunday morning I got a triple TAGS alumni sighting in the most unusual 
place.I was watching GetTV and they were playing a really old western 
"Yancey Derringer".Playing Yancey's uncle, who gets murdered, was Mr. 
Carter from the feud episode.Then later on in the episode I spotted Henry 
Bennett, and of all things Orville Hendricks.

  While I was watching Perry Mason on MeTV this morning, the killer in the 
episode turned out to be Briscoe Darling.However, ole Briscoe was clean 
shaven in this episode.Almost did not recognize him.
Then in the very next show, Matlock, there was ole Barney helping Ben Matlock.  
  Got to see lots of Mayberry people today.

The other day I was listening to an online oldies station, KYA from San
Francisco.  They play 50's-60's and also include some vintage commercials.
In one commercial, I forget what was advertised, I heard none other than
Floyd Lawson's nephew Deputy Warren Ferguson.  There was no mistaking that
voice.  He talked just like he did on TAGS.

I happened to see an Adam-12 episode that was written by Leo V. Gordon.  That 
name ran a bell since Luke Comstock (High Noon in Mayberry) was played by Leo 
Gordon.  Leo had a prodigious acting career and also wote almost 100 
screenplays including 21 Adam-12s, a couple of which he also acted in.

On Make Room for Daddy this morning, Pat Buttram appeared as a character named 
Harvey Bullock.  The name should ring a bell as the real Harvey wrote 31 
episodes of TAGS and another 21 episodes of Gomer Pyle.  He also wrote 8 
episodes for Danny Thomas in MRFD although not this particular show.  An lot of 
TAGS connections here.  Can't help but wonder if this was an inside joke on ol' 
Harvey by his fellow writers or maybe even Thomas himself.

 This morning on MeTV, on Matlock, there was Barney, who was playing Ben 
Matlock's next door neighbor.Seems that he had purchased a used car that 
was no good.Now where have we heard of that before?This used car 
salesman was a man, not Hubcaps Leasch. Anyway the crook got killed and 
Barney went on trial.   Anyone who has ever seen an episode of Matlock knows 
how this show came out.

I kinda believe that this was the first show where Barney appeared with Andy on 
Matlock.

Early this morning, every little old lady who appeared in Mayberry was 
at the Jack Benny fan club meeting! Their little band played a rousing 
rendition of some old-fashioned song that had me laughing so hard my 
little dog, Thelma Lou, got wound up too. It was a charming reunion of 
many like Emma Watson and the lady with the second used car that Barn 
was considering (sort of).

Well, there has a been a bonanza of alumni sightings lately. Today I was 
watching an old Nancy Reagan movie I had on the DVR; lo and behold in 
the opening scene was our woman speeder driving a jeep! Later on there 
was a very old sweet lady that I felt had been in Mayberry but couldn't 
quite place her. The film was one of those post-WWII tales of the mental 
strife of our vets; so sad indeed.
