Tim "Goober" Pettigrew

2021-08-10 Thread Diane Cueni
It is with great sadness that we let you know of the passing of Tim's Mom.
(Darlene)   She was 93 years young.  She was a great fan of the Andy Griffith
Show and enjoyed traveling with Tim and his sister to many, many Mayberry
Events. She enjoyed meeting all of the other Mayberry fans and got to meet with
many of the show's stars. She loved to go to Mayberry Days and looked forward
to it every year. Over the years many of her sons and extended family attended
with her. She loved Michael Hoover and never missed his show. We were so
delighted when he was able to attend her 80th birthday party. It was one of her
fondest memories. She made Tim's first goober beanie and shaped it over her
bowling ball, and always made sure his white shirts were sparkling.  We will
miss our Mayberry buddy.

Yes, that's the first time we see Goober's residence...
RFD episode "Goober's Brother" (season 2). He lives in Mrs. Lowdermilk's
boarding house.

We see the boarding house again later that season in "Goober's Niece." His

Where does Goober live?

2014-06-06 Thread Paul Mulik
A day or two ago on one of the Facebook groups, the subject of residences came
up, which got me to thinking: do we ever see Goober's residence? I've been
thinking and thinking (without a bucket) and I can't think of a single
appearance, until Mayberry RFD. There's a funny scene where Sam and Mike visit
Goober, and a Mike is impressed by Goober's fishing trophy (mounted taxidermy
fish), but it turns out Goober didn't actually catch it, he found it floating
in the lake, dead.

Anyway, someone said Goober lived at the gas station, but I'm pretty sure
that's incorrect. For example, the first time we ever hear about Goober is in
Man in a Hurry, when Gomer and Mr. Tucker are at the filling station. Gomer
gives Mr. Tucker Goober's phone number, which implies that Goober doesn't live
right there in the station. Then later, in Mind Over Matter (the one where
Goober is convinced he has been seriously injured) when Aunt Bee drives to the
gas station, Goober tells her, "I've got to go home, I've got to lay down right
away ... I'll just go to my place," but Aunt Bee insists, "there's no one there
to take care of you."

So if someone can think of any TAGS episode in which we see Goober's residence
or in which Goober mentions where he lives, please refresh my memory, which
sometimes gets a little rusty these days.

They did it before -- in 1965, dividing the car into three pieces plus the

As far as Goober wetting his gun sights, if you ever watch the 1941 movie
"Sergeant York", Gary Cooper, playing Alvin C. York does the same thing. When
they ask him why he does it, he says it cuts down on the glare. I guess that
would take away any shine on the front sight. Orville Hendricks - Mount Pilot
Butter and Egg Man. I spent 34 years in the military, and every year I
dreaded the rifle qualification weekend. I had bad eyes, and it was a
terrible effort for me to pass rifle qualification each year. From the first
year to the last year I never qualified anything but Marksman.

I don't know why Goober does it but in the movie Sargeant York, Alvin did it.
Said it cut down on the glare, helping his aim or something like that. But it
also goes along with Goober's little schtick of how he'll say a line, giggle
and poke at someone with his fist and pointed thumb. Almost like how our Jim
Lindsey, James Best does his schtick in Dukes of Hazard.

Goober Beasley

2013-02-26 Thread Larry Grainger

"By the way I noticed that Andy introduces Goober as Goober Beasley to the tv
producer for Sheriff without a gun but later on inthe series Goober gets the
name Pyle. Curious, curious." David Oberly

David, several years ago I had a close friend ask George Lindsey about that,
because I had always wondered about it as well. George told her that sometimes
Andy liked to use names of his friends on the show, and evidently he was
friends with a "Beasley" family. Besides "Goober Beasley," there was Juanita
Beasley, Barney's unseen girl at the diner. And one of the suitors Andy sent
the way of Miss Ellie to " put her on the scent of other game" was Charlie
Beasley.

Maybe there was another reason, but this was Mr. Lindsey's take on it.

Remembering Doug Dillard and Goober

This is truly sorrowful news. We lost Goober just a couple of weeks ago, and
now Doug Dillard. I was one of a privileged few who, through the generosity of
our own Jim Clark and Allan Newsome, got to surprise Doug Dillard on his
birthday, some years back (I think it was in the late 90's). We had a very
pleasant and informative lunch there in Nasville, and the wonderful surprise on
us with the appearance of George "Goober" Lindsey himself. Jim Clark gave us
each this fabulous picture of the entire group including Doug and Goober, and
it is hanging on my wall today. Thanks to Jim and Allan for that experience and

Once, in the early 90s, George Lindsey visited Hugo, Oklahoma, a small town

county seat of Choctaw County. I don't know why I didn't go see George. I'm
not sure if I was still in high school or if I had already gone away to
college. (College for me was never more than a couple hours away.) I do
remember seeing George's face on the front page of the Hugo Daily News, his
picture having been taken with the sign at Floyd's Barber Shop. I remember
reading in the article that, of all the places he has performed, Hugo is
the only place where he's actually seen a Floyd's Barber Shop. Nowadays the
shop still stands, but it is called Robbie's Barber Shop, but I think ol'
Floyd might still work a day or two each week.

Therapy for Goober grief

2012-05-06 Thread jgrit1
I know we are all hurting hearing the news of everyone's friend George Lindsey.
For me the perfect therapy is watching the episode " Goober takes a car

talking dog.

Keep up the good work Ken. You are funny and also a good recycler it's been

More sad news. Not as bad as the Lindsey news but Jim Nabors will miss this

Things I Learned About Goober from Mayberry RFD

2012-01-11 Thread Ken Anderson
Here are a few things I learned about Goober by watching Mayberry RFD.

Goober's family owned the rubbish hauling business in Mayberry.

Goober's older brother Braydon was a brilliant engineer who worked at NASA.

Goober was given a job teaching Driver's Education at Mayberry Union High
even though he never graduated from high school.

Goober helped write a comic book story and received half of the money when
it was published.

Goober was the deputy and only law official in Mayberry after Andy left.

Goober never talked over three minutes on the phone and used an egg timer
to make sure.

Goober owned a reel to reel tape recorder.

Goober lived in the boarding house right next to his new gas station.

Goober's life long ambition was to become an elder at the Mayberry Church.

Goober slept in bright red pajamas.

Goober

2010-08-12 Thread Paul Mulik
The other day someone was counting the number of different TV shows which
specific Mayberry characters appeared on (not the actors, but the characters).
George Lindsey did indeed appear as Goober Pyle in TAGS, GP-USMC, MRFD and The
New Andy Griffith Show.  On Hee-Haw, he was a mechanic called Goober, however
I'm not sure if the last name Pyle was ever used.  We watched that show fairly
regularly when I was a kid, and it seems to me he was always just called
"Goober."

Back around 1970 or so, George did a pilot for a show called "Goober and the
Trucker's Paradise Cafe" or something like that, but unfortunately it didn't
sell.  In it, he played Goober Pyle, and he operated a truck stop with his
sister Pearl Pyle.  No copies of this pilot are known to exist anywhere.  If
anybody should happen to have a lead on this, I'd love to have a look at this
film someday.  Last time I checked, George himself was trying to track down a
copy as well.

So anyway, if you count that one, then George played Goober in SIX different TV
series.  That's got to be a record.

Goober

2010-08-09 Thread DAVID QUINN

For some reason Goober has been on my mind lately. I got to thinking today
that Goober's name was mentioned twice on Andy before he was ever shown. In
January 63 in the episode "Man In A Hurry" and again in October 63 in the
episode "Sermon For Today". Then Goober first appeared in April 1964 in The
Fun Girls. I know that there were a lot of people mentioned on Andy who never
appeared, but does anyone know of another character on Andy whose name was
mentioned before they appeared? I mean several episodes previously, not a few
minutes previously.
Also on the subject of Goober, I was reading a trivia book that asked which
character appeared in 3 different shows using the same name. The answer was
our old friend Malcolm Merriweather. He appeared in Bewitched, Tabitha, and in
the soap opera Passions using the name Dr. Bombay. But then I got to thinking
today that George Lindsey has appeared in 4 shows using the name Goober Pyle.
He appeared in Andy, Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C., Mayberry RFD, and he also appeared
for one episode in The New Andy Griffith Show using the name Goober Pyle. I
guess a lot of people would count "Hee Haw" as well, but I do not think he used
the name Goober Pyle in that show. Everytime I saw him they refered to him as
George Lindsey. So take that Mr. Smart Alec Trivia Book.

Orville Hendricks - Peddling Butter and Eggs. My name is the answer to a
trivia question about Andy. Which character appeared the least number of times
on The Andy Griffith Show? Answer: Me (1 time, tied with about a thousand
other people).

RE: Goober and the car in the courthouse

2010-06-02 Thread Harriet Browder

>In the episode "Goober Takes a Car Apart",what "safety point" did Sheriff
Jackson think the car in the courthouse was bringing across?

Possibly the point would be to make sure your foot is on the correct pedal when
backing up (from inside the court house the car was facing the front door).
Here in Florida we have SOOO many people suddenly driving thru store fronts
when they thought their foot was on the brake.

Personally, I think Andy was using the Safety Week issue to justify having the
car inside the courthouse. No real point, just an association. If you notice,
it takes the 'interlopers' a few seconds to "get it". Wether they do or not,
doesn't matter. He bamboozled them with the stark realization of a car actually
BEING INSIDE the courthouse and it fit Andy's point-thinking.

That maybe one of those things we have to figure out for ourselves.
Personally I think opening the courthouse door, walking inside and suddenly
seeing a '58 Rambler staring you in the face, emphasizes the point that you
need to watch where you're walking and be aware of your surroundings, since
cars can often come out of nowhere. Kind of an odd way to make the point but
you have to admit it's eye-catching and memorable.

Double Trouble with Goober

2009-05-20 Thread Paul Mulik
Double Trouble with Goober was a short-lived comic book from the early 1950s.
It was about a little boy who got into mischief, and it was obviously inspired
by Dennis the Menace.  The Goober in this comic book wore a beanie just like
the one Goober Pyle would wear about ten years later; this could hardly be a
coincidence.

A number of years ago I gave one of these comic books to George Lindsey, and he
said he'd never heard of it.  I'll bet that one of the producers had though.
George said the way he understood it was, the idea for him to wear such a cap
came from real filling station mechanics who worked under cars on lifts, and
that the upturned brim all the way around the cap was to keep oil that dripped
on the mechanics head from running down onto his face and neck.

Goober in Church answer and other mysteries

?
I don't know why, but folks don't answer my post questions :-(
?

Sylvia..I did answer your question a few days ago, and speculated a
little as well. I believe Goober, like Thelma Lou is never seen in
church. This is due in part to the fact that most of the church
episodes were during the Gomer era.
There are two missed opportunities for Goober though. The Organ episode
and the Church Benefactors (where the building slopes to one side)
Therefore, my theory below

I think Goober went to the Methodist Church where Thelma Lou attended.
They always get together with All-Souls for Pot Lucks and other social
get-togethers. I heard the main difference is that their minster's
sermons can be "dry as sand" Hazel is the pianist over there but she
don't say much about it. John Masters teaches Sunday School but he
refuses to direct the choir because they only use local arrangements
rather than sending to New York for them. Lydia is going there too ever
since someone played a Guitar at All-Souls. She's OK with a little
piano or off-key organ, but hates the guitar.

Seriously, most small towns do have more than one church

Hey Syliva,

(That song Leonard Blush sang, came to mind when I wrote your name.)...
Sorry.

Don't go punishin' yourself because no one wrote back an answer to your
question right away. Maybe they are like me and had to go put a bucket on
their head and do some "thankin under thar".

As to your question about anyone seeing Goober in church, the answer I came up
with was that he always took his Mama for a ride on Sundays. Remember when
they were going to rebuild the bandstand.(is that a spider bite?) and have
the Sunday evening band concerts? Gomer brought his cousin Goober's tools, but
of course only he could use them, what with bein' a relative and all. As I
remember, Goober couldn't come because he always took his Mama for a ride on
Sundays, of course after washing the car, because he wouldn't take his Mama for
a ride in a dirty car. Hope this helps,

Lots of luck to you and yours,

Goober in Church

2009-01-24 Thread Silvia Boosten
Hi All,

I don't know why, but folks don't answer my post questions :-(

Does anyone recall seeing Goober in church scenes?  We often saw Gomer,
but I don't remember seeing Goober in church.

goober at the auto show

2008-11-18 Thread mary cook
Hi I remember when Goober went to the auto show and he was telling his friend
that he had his main office in Mayberry his friend replied "that little town
you grew up in when Goober was trying to impress his friend that he had a
chain of gas stations...I know Goober was reminicing with andy about when they
played football inhigh school when Opie had to write a story about his favorite
person he admired. I really do not know why Gomer introduced Goober as someone
Andy had never met in Fun Girls. Goober did once mention that he was in the
military and someone called him a hayseed mayb e Andy just hadnt seen him in a
long time.    Mary P.S. George lindsey is my fav character... i am so glad he
came to the andy griffith show I wish there would of been more episodes
with Gomer and Goober i think it would of been really funny   Mary

Goober, spaghetti, and Lydia

2008-11-18 Thread Albert

While loafing over at Wally's, Goober mentioned that he was going to whup up a
batch
of his fine tasting spaghetti on Thursday and if I saw Lydia, to make sure to
tell her and have
her come over. Now, Goober's spaghetti is well known as delicious (what with
the secret ingredient
in the sauce an' all) and figuring Lydia knew Goober pretty well, it came
somewhat as a surprise when
Lydia accepted and in an inquiring monotone asked, "Chef Boyardee,
Franco-American, and should I bring a can
opener?"

Goober and Howard

2008-11-16 Thread Paul Mulik
We know Goober lived in Mayberry when he was 5 (The Case of the Punch in the
Nose) so it's safe to assume he grew up there, and in Howard's first episode
(The County Clerk) Andy tells Helen that he went through high school with
Howard.

Goober as a boy in Mayberry

2008-11-16 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)
In the Case of the Punch in the Nose, Goober is called in as at witness
of the original event and it was stated that he was just a boy (sitting
in the barbershop) when it happened. This is sort of a strange twist
because he is one of the few characters that was an "unseen character"
(talked about by Gomer) before he became a real character.

Good memory above by Aunt Bee of Orlando. The last reference I remember
to Howard was his first job at Mayberry Transfer Company.

I still say my thing to do in Mayberry would be to train with Sarah and
be her backup operator. I work for a phone company and I am not as
good a tool man as Mr. McBeevee to be a pole or tree man. So I'd work
the switchboard for a while and learn all kinds of stuff.

When Sarah came back on duty, I would just sit on a bench in town and
wait for Mr. Schwamp to come by and smile, or Jud and Chester to tell
stories about Barney or Floyd to discuss Presidential history.

GOOBER AS SPOCK!!!!!!!

2007-12-18 Thread weenie man

Being a trivia nut I was amazed to learn this:

TV Land's Star Trek marathon November 17th, 2006, had comments by the actors.
Leonard Nemoy's stunner was that Gene Roddenberry's first choice to play Spock
was George Lindsey. He turned the part down and the rest is history.

Happy Birthday, Goober!

2007-12-17 Thread Simp Hanson
George Lindsey, AKA Goober, turns 72 today. Happy Birthday,Goob! From all my
cats, Andy, Barney, Opie, Otis, and Lester, also my house cat, Blondie(right out
of the bottle).
Watching "Goober's Replacement" the other night, noticed the scene where Andy &
Floyd stopped at Wally's to check up on Flora, and sometime much later when
Goober pulled up, maybe the next day? are the same scene. Camera angles are
slightly different, but the same cars are in the same places and the same 2
people are talking at the gas pumps.
Just finished season 6, understand why Andy gets owly more in the color
episodes. When Barney was there, he always could do a little trick to him to
relieve his tension. After he left, I noticed Goober, Floyd, Aunt Bee, and
Helen are badgering him constantly. He usually gave in to them, especially
Helen, who knew when to give him the cold shoulder. Just an opinion.

What was Goober drinking?

2007-08-31 Thread Fgfrankling
Hi ya'all,
I have a question. I was watching "A warning from Warren" this morning and
noticed something I hadn't noticed before. ( I could be wrong, as usual :) )
When Goober & Warren are in the diner, Goober orders, besides a peanut
butter&tuna sammich, a chocolate shake. When Warren suddenly decides they need
to
leave, Goober grabs up his sammich & shake and follows Warren out the door.
When they arrive at Andy's door, Goober still has his Sammich& a glass but the
contents of the glass seems to have changed from a chocolate shake to what
looks like iced tea or coke. Do any of you with a trained eye have any imput
on
that?
It always seemed odd to me too, that there were so many customers eating
in the diner at that time, and when Warren & Goober show up at Andy's house,
he is already in bed and asleep.
One of those mysteries I'll never get solved, I suppose. LOL

Goober and Gomer

2007-07-31 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
How many shows did Goober and Gomer appear in together? I can only think of
one right now-with the fun girls. Any others?
And also, I grew up like Leon, running around the neighborhood on a bike, on
foot, on a horse. I was in the woods with my dog. I walked to and from
school, to piano lessons. This was back in the sixties and my town was a lot
like Mayberry. We didn't wear helmets, knee-pads, or seatbelts. We never rode
in a car seat. If you fell off, you got scratched up, got a band-aid and kept
on going. Life was good.
