Pickles and the Russians

2017-07-07 Thread Ken Anderson
I am a bit diappointed in the meeting betwwen Presidents Trump and Putin.
If either of them would be fans of TAGS then they would certainly realize
that the best place for their meeting certainly would have been in Aunt
Bee's kitchen.

That brings to mind this question. Remember the scene where the Russian
diplomat goes through the refrigerator and finds pickles. He opens the jar
and tries one, I wonder if they were Aunt Bee's famous kerosene
cucumbers? The jar looks more like store bought pickles, so maybe she had
given up canning pickles by this time. After all, it was a color episode.

Kerosene pickles

2016-08-01 Thread Elizabeth Busby
I was given some lemon cucumbers and didn't know what to do with them since
I don't like cucumbers. Then it came to me - pickles!
I took Clara's advice and bought all fresh spices, especially since I
didn't have the ones I needed, and got started. It was a real easy recipe
and I felt like Aunt Bee. I've never made pickles and it took a cup of
vinegar. My husband came in the kitchen after I was through and sniffed and
said it smelled it vinegar. I told him I'd made some pickles his reply:
"kerosene pickles?". He claims he does not like TAGS but he knows a lot
about it. They are still fermenting so I don' know what they taste like. My
sister asked if I was going to the county line and hand them out. Elizabeth

of the label on the jars as I have never thought to look closely, but I

Poisoned Pickles

2015-11-29 Thread Ken Anderson
I am reading a mystery, "Town in a Sweet Pickle". Someone is going around
the small town of Cape Willington, Maine leaving jars of pickles. The only
problem; the pickles are poisoned.

This got me to thinking about our wonderful "Pickle Story" episode. Wasn't
Barney taking an awful chance when he distributed those kerosene cucumbers
to all those strangers passing
through Mayberry? Just what if some of those poor unsuspecting folks
actually ate the pickles and got sick? Or even worse, they died? Barney
would have found himself in a real pickle.

This all proves just one thing. If you want a really good pickle you have
to go to Festival Foods in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

OK, Sande Riggs, aren't you sorry you said you missed me?

Pickles on Leave it to Beaver

2014-10-30 Thread Ken Anderson
I just watched an episode of Leave it to Beaver. Ward came home and
presented June with a present of two quarts of pickles. June's reaction
was, How in the world will we ever eat two whole quarts of pickles.
Apparently the good people of Mayfield did not enjoy pickles as much as
the good people of Mayberry did. She can be thankful that Ward did not
come home with 8 quarts of home make pickles.

Pickles Ramblers

2011-07-26 Thread Larry Hamrick
Hey, Mayberry friends. The digest has really been buzzing lately and I enjoy
reading every message, it's just too much fun.

We've been talking pickles lately so I'm repeating this post I made about a
year ago for all the new folks who may not have read it. Like Goober said,
I'll do it!

My mother-in-law makes the best pickles you ever put in your mouth. She takes a
jar of whole Mt. Olive pickles (made here in good old NC), slices them herself
(them store bought slicers cut 'em too thin), simmers them for a while in a
spice recipe known only to her with a slight helping of garlic and when they're
done they are gd pickles. Not a hint of kerosene.

I once had a neighbor that owned an old Rambler station wagon with an automatic
transmission that operated by push buttons on the dash. It's the only one I've
ever seen like that so it must not have been very common. Us teenage boys loved
to take it on fishing trips but it wasn't too great for picking up girls.

The digest allows us to visit Mayberry every day and I love it!

Pickles and Cars

2011-07-24 Thread Harry Brewbaker

Harriet,  My grandmother was a pickle making expert who'se expertise I'd put up
against your Ph.D professor any day.  People used to come from miles around
just to hear my grandmother talk about puttin' up a pickle.  Just kidding, but
she did make great dill, sweet and bread and butter pickles.  My grandfather
grew the cucumbers and she did the pickling.  I'm not sure what method they
used but the pickles were usually pretty uniform in size.  Those are day I
miss.  Going down in Grandma's basement for a jar of whatever you might want.
If you could can it, my grandmother could put it in a jar and everything home
grown.  Every vegatable you can imagine, tomato and grape juice, pickles and
one of my favorites as a boy, pickled beets.  I have not had a good pickled
beet since my grandmother got too old to can.  I guess I think about this now
because two weeks ago would have been her 109th birthday.  Grandma fed us all
well.

Ken, I know what you mean about your first car.  My family never had the nicest
car around either.  In the early 60's we had a German Ford called a Taunus.
Ugly little thing.  My senior year in high school, my father let me have his
old 1965 Rambler 770 Classic 2 door hard top.  It hadn't run in 6 months and I
had to work to get the money to get it going.  $200 later I was tooling down
the road in a copper colored beauty that others thought terrible.  It had a 287
V-8 with a 3 speed on the column transmission.  It burnt a quart of oil a week,
had no lock on the trunk, would occasionaly get stuck in first gear and the
only window that rolled up and down on it's own was the front passenger
window.  The others had to be pulled or pushed by hand.  I doubt that car still
exists, but if it did I would love for someone to contact me and send a
picture.  I'd love to have it back.  That was a nice thing you did getting in
touch with those previous
 owners.

Here's the link with a picture of a 65 Rambler 770 Classic.  Just imagine it in
a copper or bronze color.  I never figured out exactly what that color was.

Pickles Everywhere

2011-02-27 Thread Ken Anderson
I just finished watching an old episode of The Donna Reed Show entitled
Pickles for Charity. It had some similarities to TAGS' Pickle Story.
Donna Stone decided to make home made pickles to sell to raise money for the
hospital. When trying to sell them, they gave away free samples, but no one
would buy any after tasting them. Turns out Alex and the kids had to give
all the jars away and pretend they were sold. She decided to make 300
pounds because they sold so well, but unlike with Andy's deception, she
discovered they gave all her pickles away. Rather than being hurt, she
thought it was wonderful that her family loved her so much they tried to
spare her hurt feelings. Another big difference was the Stone family
actually loved her pickles. No Mayberry sightings in this episode but there
was a Mayfield sighting as Tooey, from Leave it to Beaver was working in the
store where they sold the pickles.

Pickles and Weather

2011-01-09 Thread Larry Hamrick
Hey, Mayberry friends. We're talkin' pickles lately and I have to put in my
measley 3 cents worth. I've told this before but it will bear repeating. My
mother-in-law (bless her heart) makes the best pickles I've ever eaten, she
actually doesn't do the pickling herself but buys Mt. Olive whole dill pickles
(made here in good ol' NC) and puts her own twist on them. She slices them
herself, (them store bought slicers cut 'em too thin) adds her own combination
of spices and a little garlic, simmers them a period of time known only to her,
then puts them up in jars and they are goood pickles.

BTW, the weatherman says we'll have 4-6 inches of snow in my area of NC Monday
and Tuesday and my beloved will certainly be making snow cream. No yellow snow,
no raspberry syrup, no snow cones, I just like mine regular, vanilla in a bowl.
Of course I'll leave a dime for my wife, I don't want a down payment on a
husband, she already has one.

Even though I have ever eaten a pickle when I was hot, it would work fine
for relief of heat exhaustion.? See its the saline or salt in the pickle
that would work.? Instead of salt tablets which has an effect on the body
and blood pressure, the salt that the pickles are soaked in would be
absorbed in the body quicker and thus relieve the heat exhaustion better
than for the tablets to be digested then go throughout the body.? When
Barney was handing out the jars of pickle, it seemed like it might have been
summertime, so back then when air conditioners in cars were scarce, Barney
helped relieve the heat.? Especially that one guy from Portland, Oregon who
had to drive all the way back across the Rockies. :)

Harriett: When I was young I can remember being given salt tablets at
summertime football practice or during other times when I would be sweating a
lot to replace the salt that I was sweating out. It's not done as much now as
it is suggested to replace salt and minerals that you lose through heavy
sweating by ingesting sport drinks. The CDC says that salt tablets can still be
given but that it should be done under medical supervision. It's really not
necessary to use them now with the other possibilities available. I'll bet the
pickles were given as a source for salt replacement in the hot Florida

Pickles

2010-05-27 Thread Harry Brewbaker
Now Ken,  I'm sure they grow some fine cucumbers in our neighboring state of
North Carolina, but my granddaddy, a farmer all of his 83 years, could grow
every vegatable imaginable at his farm in Bonsack, VA.  Afterwards, my
grandmother would can everything grown at the big fireplace out behind the
house.  We never ate fruit, vegatables, juice or pickles from the store.  My
grandmother put up dill, sweet and bread and butter pickles that I believe
could have beaten Clara's blue ribbon winners.  I know grandma's had Aunt Bee's
pickles beat because they wouldn't kill flies and you didn't have to wash your
hands after eating them.
