RE: Gneral Mayberry Days Question

2022-09-18 Thread Jeff Koontz
Holland - I don't think there is a wrong answer to what day is best, so I'll
recommend looking through the schedule (link below) and see what is most
interesting to you on the days you can come up.

https://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/schedule.html

A few things to consider:

- Do you want to meet the special guests? Many will not be in town on Wednesday
and there is no autograph session on the schedule. Thursday's dinner at Cross
Creek has sold out and the only autograph session is there.

- Do you want to eat at Snappy Lunch? The lunch line will exist every day, but
be shorter on Wednesday.

- Do you want to compete in trivia? That is Friday

- Do you like beach music? Concerts on Wednesday and Thursday night

- Want to see The Mayberry Effect Documentary on the big screen or hear Randy
Turner speak about TAGS and the 40 Acre Backlot? Only on Wednesday.

- Don't like crowds? There are a lot more things scheduled for Friday and a lot
more people in town.

- Want to get a MD22 postmark? They are only available on the same days you can
make it to Mount Airy. H coincidence?

Enjoy your time at Mayberry Days and let us know what day you made it.

Jeff

Triple Alumni on Dick Van Dyke.....and a question

2022-04-04 Thread Joe
Another multi-alumni sighting on another great 60's sitcom. Last night on
MeTV, in "The Great Petrie Fortune", there was Dan Tobin ("Gentleman Dan
Caldwell") as the lawyer reading Rob's uncle will; Herb Vigran ("The Bookie
Barber") as a relative waiting for his share of the will; and Forrest
Lewis, who was in 6 episodes of TAGS. Not too bad.

Now, a question - I don't know if this is a young vs. old, or northern vs.
southern, or rural vs. city thing - but when Andy says that he was in
"upper 5th grade", and someone else was in "lower 5th grade" - what does
this mean? I never heard of that.

Question of the Day

2021-11-13 Thread Joe
I was talking to someone recently and the subject of TAGS came up. When I
said TAGS was my favorite television show, he told me he was a big fan too.
I mentioned that I really liked the episodes with the Darling family - he
replied that he couldn't stand the Darlings and wouldn't watch those
episodes. So I said I also really liked the episodes featuring Ernest T.
Bass - he said he hated Ernest T. and couldn't watch those episodes either.
Finally, I asked him about the Malcolm Merriweather episodes, which I also
enjoy - same answer, he didn't like Malcolm at all and wouldn't watch
those. I finally told him I didn't understand how he could say he was such
a huge fan of TAGS when he really disliked so many classic episodes. So,
was I right? Or did I take too narrow of a view?

JOE from G.I.

P.S. Saw only about 10 minutes of "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" today
- the town meeting scene. Even in that brief time, there were 2 TAGS alumni
in it - Henry the jinx, and Briscoe Darling. Once again - TAGS alumni are
everywhere.

Alumni Sighting - and a question

2021-05-04 Thread Joe
Been enjoying all the Alumni Sightings - unreal how many TAGS cast members,
guest stars, etc. appeared on all types of TV shows during the 50's, 60's,
and 70's. Got another one to add to the list: watching "M.A.S.H." the other
morning, there was "Andy's Rival", Frank Smith, playing a Colonel who
wanted to court-martial Hawkeye after a shoving incident in a bar. He
played a totally different character than the smooth, smart,
guitar-playing, School Board member from Raleigh.

Now, a question - does anyone else think that Barbara Griffith, Andy's
first wife who appeared in the choir in "The Song Festers", standing in the
front row next to Barney, looked a lot like a younger, brunette version of
Rose Marie in "The Dick Van Dyke Show"?
Just wondering if I'm the only one who sees a resemblance.

"Andy Forecloses" - and another question

2021-02-17 Thread Joe
Well, I been studyin' about that question from Ron, and the way it seems to
me, is that Old Ben gave Lester a job at his store so he could pay Ben what
he owed. So the money they collected to help Lester pay the mortgage wasn't
needed anymore, and Andy decided to donate it to the school library,
knowin' the generous folks of Mayberry wouldn't mind.

Now I've got a question - we all know that TAGS was shot on the old 40
Acres backlot, but I've wondered about the outdoor scenes in 2 of the color
episodes. In "Andy's Trip to Raleigh", the backyard with the swimming pool
doesn't look like it belongs on the 40 Acres set. Then in the next
episode, "Opie Steps up In Class", when Aunt Bee pulls up in front of the
house to drop Opie off for lunch (supper?) at the Hollanders, the house
looks like it's out in the country, not on the set.

Since both houses looked pretty upscale, I've always wondered where these
outdoor scenes were shot. Were they rented somewhere nearby 40 Acres? Did
they belong to one of the producers, directors, writers, etc.? Also, is it
possible that the outdoor shots in both episodes were shot at the same
house, since the driveway scene with Opie showed only the front of the
house, and the scenes with the woman lawyer by the pool only showed the
backyard? Also, the fact that these episodes were shown back-to-back.

 Just wonderin'.

Good question, Welford....

2020-10-23 Thread Joe
I also join the club of fans whose recent postings haven't made it on the
bulletin board, so I'm re-submitting this one:

I was reading an article about the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and saw
this quote which I thought was worth passing on. The reporter was talking
to a guy who lives there, and this is part of what he said:

*“I joke with my wife because I watch ‘The Andy Griffith Show"and I said,
‘Why can’t society just be like that?’” he said, alluding to the idyllic
life in the imaginary town of Mayberry.*

*In the Upper Peninsula, life is already a bit like in Mayberry for many of
the nearly 300,000 residents.*

*North of the five-mile long Mackinac Bridge that connects the two parts of
Michigan, violent crime is rare — there were only five murders in the
Upper Peninsula in 2019.*

Now, a question - a couple weeks ago I asked about where the ball field
was located in the episode "The Ball Game", and got a great answer from
Dennis B. After recently watching "Opie's Piano Lesson" with Flip Conroy
as the football coach, I wondered about where the football practice scenes
were filmed. The views were more limited than in the baseball episode, but
the bleachers looked like the ones in the ball field episode. Also, you can
hear highway traffic in the background, so I thought maybe it was the same
location - ???

Re: "The Ball Game" question

2020-08-15 Thread Dennis Beal
I gladly accept Joe's nomination for "Trained Noticer of the Month." ;-)

As for his question about where "The Ball Game" was filmed, I asked George
Lindsey (Goober) himself that very question back in 2006. He told me the ball
field was filmed in the San Fernando Valley north of Beverly Hills. He didn't
tell me the actual name of the ball field, but I do know it definitely was not
on the 40 acres lot.

As for Jeff's comment about not seeing a pole at Franklin Canyon where Mr.
McBeevee gets into his truck, when I was there last year the wooden pole has
been replaced with a metal one. Someone told me there was a big storm a couple
of years earlier that snapped the wooden pole we see on the show, so they
replaced it with a metal one. I got a picture of it while there. I tried to
find where Andy met Mr. McBeevee as he climbed down the tree, but couldn't.
Franklin Canyon is a TAGS fan's heaven since trained noticers can
walk/see/touch the very places we see on so many episodes.

"Twilight Zone" - and a question

2020-08-14 Thread Joe
Well, I have to nominate Dennis B. as the August "Noticer of the Month" -
I mean, really - EIGHT alumni in one episode of the Twilight Zone! I've
watched that episode and never noticed 8 TAGS alumni. And noticing the
similarity of the main character's name to that of the NC Governor too -
pretty impressive.

I definitely remember maybe 3 references to The Twilight Zone in various
TAGS episodes, but I can't recall which ones.

Now my question: watched "The Ball Game" episode today, and I wondered if
the ball field was part of the 40 Acres lot, or an actual Little League
field in the area. Aerial pictures at the time (1966) don't seem to show
any open area as big as the one where the game was played. I figured it
must be a real ball field, not on the studio lot. But IMDB shows the only
filming location as: Desilu Studios, Culver City, California.

Just wonderin'.

One of my favorite quotes from Mayberry is "I think I got her if she
don't jump!" I use this when attempting something difficult and someone
offers to help. I always follow up with "That's an Andyism" and then
explain if they don't get it. Sometimes after this the person will ask
if Mayberry is a real place and where is it; I reply with a hand motion
to my heart and brain first and then explain that it is based on Andy's
hometown in NC. But even if the person doesn't know all about it, they
at least know the names Andy and Mayberry; makes me proud!!!

I'll have to keep an eye out for June Bride on TCM. I didn't find but a
Spanish version on Amazon so didn't order it. Have you ever seen Thelma

that one and thoroughly delightful as always.

question about attempt to rename NC town

2019-05-05 Thread Maryann abc
Hello fellow TAGS fans-

I was recently re-reading the Andy Griffith Story by Terry Collins and the
author mentions an avid 14 year old fan club president in the 1980's wanting to
rename a NC town Mayberry. Andy Griffith opposed the idea, saying it was
“enormously embarrassing,” to him.

So here are my questions-what happened to that fan club? I cannot remember the
name but it was not the Rerun Watchers Club. Does anyone know what happened to
that club?

And why was Andy Griffith embarrassed by the idea, rather than flattered? Too
much attention? Did he think it was just silly?

I would enjoy hearing your thoughts.

In response to David Quinn's question/challenge of when TAGS characters told an
outright lie---the one that comes to mind is Andy calling his insufferable
Uncle Ollie and tells him escaped convicts have been spotted on the outskirts
of Mayberry. This was right after Andy found out the convicts had been captured.
As hard as it is to imaging Andy lying, I sure could understand it in this case.

A Very Difficult Trivia Question I Ask

2018-08-07 Thread Ken Anderson
Well last night I participated in a large National Night Out sponsored by a
neighboring city's police department. We had a great time. I handed out a
lot of badges and gave candy treats to kids if they could answer some
trivia questions. I could not believe how difficult it was for some kids
to figure out the answers. i.e. Here is the first question I asked each
kid.

What is Barney Fife's last name?

You would be amazed as to how many kids could not figure this one out.
Even some of the parents could not answer it. Even when I repeated it and
emphasized the word FIFE in my question, they still didn't know.

So then I asked them again with three choices.

What is Barney Fife's last name?
A. Smith
B. Fife
C. Johnson

Some still could not get it right. And I am talking about kids in the
fourth and fifth grade.

I wish they would have just played the game. I hate it when kids get
obtuse.

Re: Question about Floyd and "Punch in the Nose"

2017-05-08 Thread Janet Anderson

>>>Here's my question in "The case of a punch in the nose" who is the barber
>>>coming out of Floyds shop as Barney and Goober are pulling up to the court
>>>house?<<<

If you look carefully (and I could post a screen shot, but I can't do that on
the digest), that man is apparently a customer of Floyd. He is not wearing the
barber coat that Floyd wears. Instead, it appears to be a cape he is wearing.
We assume he hopped out of the barber chair in the middle of a haircut to check
out the excitement in the street. The man himself is a background actor
(extra) who can be seen in other episodes.

Now, there are instances where someone else (an extra) is playing Floyd in a
long shot. I forget which episode this is, but one of the extras, a guy who
wears glasses, can be seen briefly through the barber shop window posing as
Floyd. This was done so as to avoid the trouble of using the regular actor as
"background scenery," since most people would never realize it was someone else
anyway. In that episode, the extra was wearing Floyd's barber coat and was
standing over someone in the chair. So the situations were different.

Hope this explanation helps.

Well Ken, it looks like your math is a bit off. Even old Methuselah didn't make
it to 1,000 years old. Maybe you could get Ernest T. Bass to teach you that tap

Speaking of that Swedish money, I put 2 and 2 together, added 12 and carried
five, and came up with not worth a tiddly-boo.  Maybe I'll ask my son Taylor;
he's a financial analyst and planning a trip to Sweden in a couple of weeks.

Speaking of money, on Father's Day a guy at church shared the story of the time
he asked his son if he could estimate how much money he owed him after all the
years of being his dad. The son responded by sending a ten trillion dollar
bill from Zimbabwe, where they've been experiencing runaway inflation. That's
$10,000,000,000,000 (it's them zeros that's the key to the whole thing).

A Different Kind of Trivia Question

2014-05-20 Thread Ken Anderson
In a number of episodes of TAGS and Mayberry RFD we have seen guys smoking
pipes. Barney had one when we went undercover to catch the man who threw
the suitcase of money out of the train. When Barney was disguised as a
store dummy a man with a pipe blew smoke in his face, and in Mayberry RFD
Howard smoked a pipe when he was asked to write a poem and again when he
went on TV as the Dream Spinner. One of the Darling boys also smoked a
pipe. And there were probably others.

It got me to thinking about how pipe smokers have just about completely
disappeared from our society.

My question is, do you know of anyone personally who still smokes a pipe.
Or have you ever personally ever smoked a pipe?

David, I believe there are two possibilities. You could be referring to
Charles Thompson. He went from playing Asa, the bank security guard, in the
black and white years to playing Dr. Roberts in the color years. I'd say
that's a pretty good promotion! But then again, you could also be referring to
Jay Novello. He went from playing a con man in Guest of Honor to playing the
attorney Neil Bentley in Otis Sues the County. However, since the job of
con man/thief isn't technically a menial job and can be pretty lucrative, I
will say that Charles Thompson is the answer.

Mike Peacock got the correct answer, the regular on Petticoat Junction who
appeared in the movie Benji was in fact, Benji.Even though his name was
Dog on Petticoat Junction. I have attached a short opening to Petticoat
Junction that shows Benji in the opening credits of the show. Isn't it cute
for him to be in the water tank?I don't know about anyone else, but I sure

Trivia Question

2013-12-04 Thread Ken Anderson
OK friends, here is a trivia question for you. I don't think it should be
too challenging.

I am reading the mystery Easter Bunny Murder and I came across a Mayberry
connection. One of the characters has two dogs. They are named Yanki-Poo
and Yum Yum.

Question is, in which episode of TAGS were those two names mentioned and
who mentioned them?

Trivia Question Answer

2013-11-24 Thread DAVID QUINN

Yes, everyone got the correct answer, Thelma Lou's cousin Karen. Gail Davis,
who played Karen was born in October 1925, and of course Andy was born in June
1926.No wonder she could out shoot Andy, she had longer to practice.
With Google and the internet now a days, there is no question on earth that we
cannot find out the answer to except who played Mr. Schwump. On a completely
unrelated subject, this past Friday all over the air ways they were showing the
50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination. Now I do not know how it was
in other states, but on that weekend 50 years ago here in Oklahoma, all TV
programming was pre-empted for coverage of the tragedy. The funeral was on
Monday, and finally at approximately 6 P.M. on Monday night, 25 November
regular television programming began to be resumed. One of the first regular
shows to come back on was The Andy Griffith Show, and what episode was
broadcast that night?I won't keep it from you, or make you guess,
because it is so easy to look up, it was A Date For Gomer where Gomer
dances with Thelma Lou's cousin Mary Grace.Thelma Lou sure had a lot of
cousins..

Answer to trivia question

2013-10-13 Thread Janet Anderson
Which regular on TAGS once sung a song in a Meredith Willson musical? This
was a famous Meredith Willson musical, and the TAGS regular sung the song in
the movie version, not the stage version. For the entire 100 points, you
have to name the TAGS regular, and the song that was sung. (Hint) It was a
really cute song about a town in the United States, and it was not
Mayberry.

Well, someone has probably already beat me to the punch, but it was Ronnie
Howard (Opie) singing Gary, Indiana in the film version of Meredith Willson's
The Music Man.

That's a good question David, about the Meredith Willson song used on TAGS.
Rather than just blurt out the answer, I will give a hint: all you have to do
is watch all 249 episodes in a row, and you'll find the answer. If you watch
one episode every weekday, it will only take you a year or so.

Serious question

2013-09-10 Thread Steve Billings
I don't know exactly whom to address this to but it's something that does
bother me. I love TAGS and the characters in it but...has anyone ever noticed
the lies told on every episode? True, some could be considered white lies but
I don't believe in that phrase.

I don't mean to be a worm in the pickle barrel, but it seems lies are told
flippantly and often by a number of characters, most notably by Andy. I know
it's done to better the situation or to keep from hurting someone but
still...

Gas question

2013-08-08 Thread CTMIDWAY58
School buses would not have bought gas from a service station. Back then as
now, they had their own tanks and pumps, bought fuel wholesale and filled
the buses daily themselves.
Farmers bought their gas in bulk from a distributor, no road tax, since
farm tractors seldom used the highways but were on fields. And if Farmer
John needed to go to town, he backed his car up to the pump and filled his car.
 Just a little cheating, there!!
That takes care of a lot of the fuel question, and Rafe probably mixed a
little alcohol in with his to make it last longer, and he being a farmer
didn't go to town for gas either. What the Darlings burned in their truck is
an
enigma as they never bought gas, and didn't have a pump at home. Maybe
they cooked their own fuel making the truck run a little hotter than normal,
thereby needing more water from the memorial horse trough!!

The Funniest Question I Have Ever Been Asked

2013-07-08 Thread Ken Anderson
Today while working a man came through my line and we talked about what we
did over the Fourth. He said he went to Bronson so I asked what shows he
saw. He then asked me the funniest question I have ever heard. He
said,Have you heard of Andy Griffith?
I had to tell him about my Mayberry passion so then he told me he heard the
Darlings. He was amazed that I knew they were the Dillards. I thought
about saying, I am not just a jerk bagging groceries.

A question for the forum - ???

2013-05-14 Thread Holland Shoaf
May I ask the forum a question ? Im lazy and do not feel like searching my
Mayberry 101 book ( dont know if the answer to my quesion is in there to begin
with ).
Whats behind Andy Griffith making a quick change about continuing after the 5th
season after claiming he wouldnt ?
That was quick and painless ?
Thank you in advance !

Less than one hour from Mayberry
---heres a little reading on the subject
Why did Barney (Don Knotts) leave TAGS after the 5th Season?

Andy had originally signed to do the show for 5 years, and I had a five year
contract. He said I'm only going to do this for 5 years and then move on.
Even in the beginning of the fifth year he was still saying that. So I started
self-protecting immediately and began searching out what I was going to do
next. I interviewed with all networks. I was very hot with that show, so I
could have had almost anything I wanted. Finally, I wound up getting a very
nice feature deal with the universal to make The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. Anyway,
it came down to this: I hadn't actually signed with Universal yet but had made
a lot deals and negotiated for a long time. Then all of a sudden Andy turned
around and changed his mind. He came to me and said, I've decided to stay on.
What do you think? We've got a new deal to offer you. Do you want to stay. But
by then I had already committed myself to universal, where I had an opportunity
to make features. Although I didn't have a production company , they gave me an
office, my own writers and a five year contract. It was a nice deal, and by
then I thought it was time for me to move on - so I did. I came back and did a
few shows with Andy. I used to kid them when I came back. I'd say Are you
still working with that little screen? Then they'd yell, here comes the movie
actor.

Ken's question about the camera

2013-04-03 Thread jdean46
From Ken Anderson
I have an observation regarding Barney's camera he hooked up at Wally's inorder
to nab the thief. When he hooked up the string to the shutter of thecamera, it
was supposed to trigger the camera to take a picture. However, the door opens
to the inside. Wouldn't that have lessened the tension onthe string?

I think I have ciphered this out, Ken. If the door opens in, you have to put a
hook
over the door; attach the string to the door, run it back through the hook,
then run
it to the camera. Then when the door opens, the string tightens, and POW!,
the camera fires. Solving this has given me the vapors. I have to go rest now.

Question about the Taylor house

2013-02-27 Thread Rebecca Spears
Tonight while watching Aunt Bee's Medicine Man, I noticed something I had not
noticed before. After she sings and excuses herself to the kitchen, she walks
in front of Andy and Barney, who just came in the front door. We are to assume
she goes into the kitchen because we hear something fall and break. Andy and
Barney are seen looking almost looking straight ahead, almost a slight right.
My thought is... Wouldn't the kitchen be to the left of that scene? Maybe I am
having a dyslexic moment... Anybody else notice it?

2012-11-25 Thread DAVID QUINN

While I was watching the first episode of TAGS the other day, I noticed that
when Aunt Bee came to stay with Andy and Opie, she lingered in the living room
for a spell. It was then I noticed that Andy did not have a television set.
He had some sort of radio/stereo combination in the living room. That was in
1960, so Andy was really late getting a television set. Most people got one in
the 50's. I was wondering if anyone knew the very first show when Andy's
living room was shown to have a television set?I know in several color
episodes the television was prominetly displayed, and when Gomer stayed with
the Taylors they all watched television after supper. But when did Andy first
buy a television set? Orville Hendricks - Mount Pilot Butter and Egg Man.

Laughter Question

2012-11-17 Thread Ken Anderson
An important aspect of TAGS is the wonderful humor and laughter that it
creates. However, I have been thinking lately about whether or not we have
ever seen Barney or Aunt Bee in an all out laughing scene. We have seen
Andy laugh quite often, mostly at the expense of Barney, but I really
cannot think of a scene where Barney or Aunt Bee have been shown really
laughing out loud. Now I don't think Barney's Christmas Ho Ho Ho should
really count. Now I am sure there must be some so sure would appreciate it
you folks would list some so I can know what they are.

Odd question

2012-10-04 Thread Kimberly McCray

Hello All!

In a strange bit of fate, after attending my first Mayberry Days this past
weekend, on my first day back at work at the Raleigh-Durham Airport where I
work as the archivist, I had a Mayberry connection that deserves mention.

Currently I am arranging and describing a large selection of slides chronocling
the airport's history. Included in one batch of slides from some sort of
employee celebratory event (a buffet style meal) there is one picture of David
Browning dressed as Barney Fife standing with a couple airport employees. I
have no idea when the picture was taken, although judging from the other slides
in the box and the clothing style represented I'm assuming it was in the mid
'90s - 2000 range. Does anyone, Mr. Browning in particular, have any
information about this event, in terms of the date and/or what the event was in
recognition of?

One a totally different note - I recently was introduced by my grandfather to
one of golfing friends - a Mr. Pete Floyd. As soon as he said his name a bell
went off in my head...why did I recognize that name? I just couldn't place it
but Pete Floyd sounded sooo familiar. Then it hit me! It was a Barney Fife
line that I was remembering -Oh for the love of Pete, Floyd!

Best,
Kim McCray
