Watched the old movie from 1950...Kansas Raiders, starring Audie Murphy as
Jesse James. One of his associates was Cole Younger of the famous Younger's,
portrayed by James Best. Now if James just turned 80, and this was 56 years
ago, that means he was only 24 at the time, which was young for an actor back
then, especially for such a big role. He was very good in it and did some
fantastical actoring.

In the old movie Kansas Raiders last night, starring Audie Murphy, there was
a Mayberry connection! This was a Jesse James movie with Audie as Jesse, and
one of his sidekicks was none other than James Best. The movie was from 1950
so James must have been... let's see now...barely in his 20s I would say.

The old movie 3:10 to Yuma was on the other day. Can't remember who was
trying to get Glen Ford to Yuma, but one of the guests in the hotel lobby
waiting
for them to come down when the train got there was the man who was not in a
hurry! He sat patiently in the hotel lobby reading his newspaper. Amazing how
tensed up he got from that time until Mayberry when he had to go so fast!
Floyd was best in his role of Chester on Gunsmoke when it was on the
radiddio way back when. I was in the service, 170 miles from home, and on
Friday
nights when I headed home for a 3 day off time I always listened to Floyd and
Doc and Parley Baer as Chester. Great shows! Along with another favorite, a
"Tale well calculated to keep you inSUSPENSE!!"
Also on was John Dehner but not selling snake oil to Aunt Bee, but playing
Palladin, and he was great in that as well!
See you at the end of the month at the Days!

out of Mayberry, the bus passes right by a parked car. It is the Fun Girls
convertable. You know the old 30's model that they used to speed through
Mayberry in their second appearance. I guess they were in town to give the
Mayberry band a good send off. Either that or they were following Freddie
Fleet's band around. You know what groupies those fun girls are.

Today I had a sidecar sighting that made my day. I don't know much about
motorcycles, but this sidecar looked very similar to Barney's. The whole
outfit was camouflage painted, so I hoped it was purchased at the Army
surplus. This motorcycle was being driven by a woman (maybe she was Barney
and Thelma Lou's daughter) and she had a guy in her sidecar. He didn't
appear to be a prisoner, so I assume she isn't a deputy (or wasn't on duty).

Also had Henry Fonda as a good guy, with Denver Pyle as the stagecoach driver,
Edgar Buchanan in some capacity, and Arlene Garlonka who's profession will go

Another interesting factoid: They say Opie at the very tender age when he
started the show, could not throw the rock into the water from where he was, so
a person hiding behind the bushes actually tossed the rock you see hitting the

The fact that I hadn't seen Henry in anything else meant I haven't been

With the SciFi channel running a Twilight Zone marathon, it really wasn't
too hard to spot TAGS alumni, but I saw an episode with 3.

James Best (our Jim Lindsey)had the lead role. Edgar Buchanan ("Goldbrick"
Wheeler) was the town doctor. Dub Taylor (from the Post Office), was one of
the town loafers.

The role was very Lindsey-esque for James, I expected him to pick up a
guitar just any minute. The episode was B&W so I suspect it was filmed
fairly close to the time he was playing guitar out in front of Orville's
funeral parlor.

She appears with Tom Jacobs a lot also. That scene is as close to Mr.

nice pair of speeches" He misunderstands her to say "That's a nice hair

carrying a real milkshake. When they get to Andy's
house, my first thought was that Goober's milkshake
has turned into a cola. But then I noticed that as he

Speaking of unknown first names, this has probably been discussed before but

I just saw Emmett Clark, the Fix-it Man, (Them timers are tricky) on an
episode of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. He was playing a small time gambler.
He becomes a crucial witness at the end of the episode.

It got me to trying to remember. Didn't Paul Hartman do a bunch of
commercials for some major product in the 70's? Anyone remember what it was?

I was watching an episode of Wings the other day (The Waxman Cometh) in which
Lowell buys a wax museum.  Joe and Brian visit the place, and approach a
display of two figures:
Brian:  Hey, look at this!  Mayberry's deputy Barney Fife, and German
Chancellor Otto von Bismarck.  I don't remember a von Bismarck in Mayberry.
Joe:  Sure you do, he was Goober's friend.

P.S.  I see I'm not the only one to have mysterious punctuation marks showing
up in their messages.  I wonder what causes that?  I didn't change anything at

Saw Bert Mustin tonight on an episode of Alfred Hitchcock. He was playing
the owner of a hardware store. The sheriff was played by Fess Parker. It
took me a while to figure out who Fess was, I knew the voice was familiar
but he sure didn't look like Daniel Boone. LOL

I happened upon a rerun of Magnum P.I. last nite. Tom Selleck was talking to a
blonde woman. I thought, "where have I seen her." It took me a few minutes of
racking my brain and I finally came up with it. She played the woman prisoner
in "Prisoner of Love". The one that Andy almost fell for and almost kissed. I
don't know her name. This would have been sometime in the 1980's, but she
still looked practically the same as she did in TAGS. I think Tom was smitten
with her, too.

Double Sighting

2008-06-28 Thread Danny Taylor
I saw Jim Lindsey and Goober both in the same episode of an Alfred Hitchcock
show.
The episode was set in a rural small town and both Jim and Goob were locals
in the town. Jim was fooling around with this guy's wife (The guy was Mr
Haney from Green Acres) Not exactly the Mayberry type of behavior we would
expect from Jim, But he was known as a bit of a rebel, playing his guitar
like that in front of the funeral parlor. If you want to check out the
episode on Hulu.com It is on the Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Season 2, Episode
13, entitled "The Jar".

On another non tags note. If you are a Bob Newhart fan, I saw him on an
episode of Alfred Hitchcock hour a few episodes back from the above episode.
It was entitled "How to get rid of your wife" This is the earliest
appearance of Bob that I have seen myself. And he does a magnificent job.
The part is so unlike the characters he usually played on his TV shows that
you almost can't believe it is him.

Was watching a episode of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer from 1958.  This was
the one starring Darren McGavin not Stacy Keach.  There was a young lady in the
show that Mike was trying to help with her drug problem.  She looked an awful
lot like Jenny Boone.  Did anyone else see this show?  I was just wondering if
it was her.

FirstHappy B'day Ken, hope there are many more to come.

Was watching just a snippet of a Bonanza episode on Sunday when I spotted a
face that looked familar.  There was an inebriated gentleman in the saloon
talking very loudly about Little Joe.  After staring at him for a few seconds I
realized it was Ralph Haynes from the B&W High School Reunion episode.  And
yes, he appeared to be sweating.
