While watching a local program today the host was interviewing Tuwanda
Coleman, who is retiring from co-hosting another local show. Retiring after
41 years at News Channel 5 in Nashville.
Ms. Coleman was talking about doing interviews with Don Knotts and Betty
Lynn, she said she loved watching The Andy Griffith Show. She said that was
one of the biggest thrills of her career.

You never know when TAGS will be in the conversation.

I taped an old movie and got around to watching it yesterday. It is
titled "Cheaper by the Dozen" starring Clifton Webb, in which he is an
efficiency expert with 12 children. In one part, he goes to a high
school dance with his daughter to keep an eye on her and who turns up?
There was our Thelma Lou as another  student recently moved there. She
was adorable and had a thick southern accent. The movie was distributed
in 1950, 11 years before Betty Lynn  first appeared in Mayberry. It sure
was nice seeing her and hearing her charming voice. I admired her greatly.

Early this morning I put the tv on TCM without even looking at it, not
yet having fully awakened. Within minutes I recognized the sweet voice
of our own Thelma Lou. She was only seen for a short time but her beauty
and lovely voice were unmistakable. I later looked it up on IMBD and see
that this role was uncredited; she was 29 at the time in 1955, not yet
reaching the thrill of going to Mayberry! But it sure was fun running
into her elsewhere!

Magical Thelma Lou

2015-07-25 Thread Dan Goodwin
In The Farmer Takes a Wife, Thelma Lou brings snacks in to the girls and
speaks to Jeff Pruitt. She then says something about going to get coffee
and Jeff begins to move around the room to end up with Barney and Andy at
the front door. This is a single camera shot so we even see Thelma Lou
disappear behind into the room behind the 3 guys while they talk about
Jeff's choice. Then, as Jeff indicates the girl he has chosen, we get a
shot of the room full of girls and suddenly there's Thelma Lou with the
coffee. How'd she get in there? She didn't pass the 3 guys.

So, when did Thelma Lou punch Barney in the nose?

2013-03-04 Thread Larry Grainger

That would be the episode A Date for Gomer, when a date was arranged between
Gomer and Thelma Lou's cousin, Mary Grace. After Gomer had seemingly bailed on
Mary Grace and the other four were on their way to the dance, you hear the
sound of a whack from the back seat and then we see Barney holding his nose
because Thelma Lou had just socked him. It is certainly a side of Thelma Lou
that is seldom seen.

Barney Smoking and Thelma Lou

2012-09-06 Thread Ken Anderson
Barney smoked a cigar when he found the money in the suitcase as he was
trying to be Mr. Big and catch the attention of the thief.

When Andy went to arrest the newspaper publisher in Raleigh, he took a
cigar for Barney saying that Barney liked to smoke one once in a while.

Also, a while back it was brought up about Thelma Lou going to church. In
the episode where Barney and Thelma Lou had a big fight about not going
anywhere, Barney mentioned to Andy that he took Thelma Lou to church every
Sunday. In Family Visit Andy mentioned that they went to the early
service at church, so perhaps Barney and Thelma Lou went to the later
service on most Sundays, so that is why we didn't see her. Or else, she may
have been sitting behind Mr. Schwamp, and his hair blocked our view of her.

I think a lot about Andy and all he has given us. There is only one movie he
did I didn't like. It was the one where he played a murderer and he was
executed and they shaved his head. It was the point of him getting killed, and
I consider Andy family.
We have got away from many things besides work ethics. Things like hats and

every time I see it (I'm amused easily OK).

Now I don't know if this is on the DVD, I've never checked. I'm thinking
it's just a result of a scene being cut out on TVLand.
Anyway, in the episode Farmer Takes a Wife when Andy, Barney, and Jeff
Pruitt are all over at Thelma Lou's house during the hen party, Thelma
   Lou does her magic trick.
You see Thelma come into the room to drop off a tray of drinks/food, she
says hi to Jeff and then she walks back into the kitchen. You never see
her walk back in to the living room but poof she magically reappears
there the next second or so.

My husband just laughed while I made sure he watched. me saying
OK OK, here she comes with the tray. she sets the tray down.now
watch...she goes into the kitchen...she doesn't came back in but
look there.poof.. she's back in the living room. How does she
   do that
He said maybe there's another way back in but I've looked I don't see
   one.

Ya all think that maybe we've found out what Thelma Lou's job is a
   magician???

Barney and Thelma Lou kiss

2008-06-01 Thread Janet Anderson
Highlight: Getting kissed by Thelma Lou in Public.

Joe, I watched Barney's Physical last night on DVD. I don't know if I ever
thought much about this before, but it hit me that twice in this episode Thelma
Lou gives Barney a kiss on the mouth. Not a peck on the cheek, mind you, but a
bona fide smacker full on the lips. One was as she was leaving the court house
after the anniversary celebration, and the other was while Barney was hanging
in Andy's closet. So I asked myself, How many other times do we see Barney and
Thelma Lou openly kiss on the lips? Most of the time, it's implied, such as
when they've been alone together in the dark and then Barney emerges with
lipstick all over his face. Or maybe Barney's trying to kiss her when Thelma
Lou is discussing something with him, and she rebuffs him.

Can anyone tell of other specific instances when we actually see Barn and Thel
kiss on the mouth?

Thelma Lou Schwamp

2007-09-25 Thread Carol Stonemetz
I have a theory - Thelma Lou's last name is Schwump. Since most people
in
Mayberry have kinfolk around town, maybe they are related since it doesn't
appear either of them has much else in the wway of kinfolk in the show

Speaking of Thelma Lou, I sure would like to have her working hours. We know
she works in an office, but she sure is home every time someone goes over
there in the middle of the day. And she dates Barney in the evening a lot, so
she couldn't work to many nights. And then there is glueing covers back on
hymn books with Edgar Coleman. And what about her and Edgar Coleman?

Thelma Lou On the Job

Thanks for your help Untrained Voice, and Paul on Thelma Lou's employment.
I only knew of the Man In the Middle scenes where she says she has come
from
and has to get back to the office. The more I think about it, the less I
think
she worked for the County. Probably could have been an insurance office.

Speculate for a moment if she were to have been a financial planner
you know... retirement plans, stocks, mutual funds. She could have
helped Barney with those investment ideas, and how to reduce those
deductions comin' out of his check all the time! Then again, we would
lost some delightful moments in Mayberry! See ya in the funny papers!

Thelma Lou, employment.

2007-04-23 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)
Still wondering if anybody knows what Thelma Lou's job was? Career
office girl in Mayberry?
Do you suppose she worked for the County? Dennis

Dennis I have often wondered about this as well.
I think she works at a small insurance office in town. Here is my
Logic.
What kind of offices do we see or remember in small towns. Governmental
offices, Utilities offices, Insurance Offices, and offices associated
with bigger Businesses.
We know that Violet Rose Schumacher worked out at the Coal Company.
We know that if she worked at an office at the School, she would have
known Helen from work, and that doesn't seem to be how they meet.
If she worked for a governmental office, Andy and Barney would surely
have mentioned that or encountered her in some way. (getting an
appointment with the Mayor or City Council etc).
She could have worked for the Dept. of Water and Power--but again, they
would have come across her there.
The Phone company appeared to have no employees except Sara, so we can
rule out utilities.
It must have been right in town, not out on the fringe near the Diner,
and you-know--Juanita.

There is one other possibility. Some of you know that I believe Mr.
Schwamp ran the local funeral home. (Often dressed in suit, reassuring
nod etc.) Perhaps she worked in the office of that funeral home.
Remember that Barney met her at Wilton Blaire's Funeral. That could
have been her reason for being there. Perhaps the small funeral home
also often used a church for their larger services--and thus the need to
help Edgar Coleman out with the Hymn Books???

Just a possibility. We see Ed, who later became Howard, as the
Insurance Salesman and Claim agent, but Thelma Lou could have been in
the background handling the paperwork.

One of these two,

Thelma Lou and Barney were in love

2006-04-02 Thread linjanecam
I have no doubt whatsoever that Thelma Lou and Barney were deeply in love
but he had the proverbial cold feet to which many bachelors can attest. I
agree
wholeheartedly with Thelma Lou ( Janet) and her assessment in msg #9 dated
3/31. Smokey's song, Tears of a Clown is just the right way to put it and as
always, Barney was trying to save face. I don't however understand why he
hadn't written to her after leaving town and perhaps the writers could have
added a bit more to explain that one. Possibly they didn't realize we would
have
the opportunity to view each episode a myriad of times and dissect each as
we are now doing. Back then it was one show and maybe a summer rerun and that
was about it. Using the same actors as different characters attests to that
assumption. Anyhow, their love was deep in my opinion and the writers just
plain goofed in not having Thel and Barn tie the knot. I can only assume they
left the door open just incase or a return to Mayberry for Don. I wonder.

Barney did love Thelma Lou

2006-04-02 Thread bcq145
Laura Lee Hobbs wants me to clear up any misunderstandings. I am not saying
that Barney did not love Thelma Lou enough to marry her earlier. I merely asked
the question if you thought so based on how soon he SEEMED to recover from
her marriage. Maybe the speed of recovery meant something, maybe it didn't.
It's all in the eyes of the viewer.
I feel like it was really to try to end the show on a happier note (but
impossible) and like it's basically a sign of Barney's immaturity. He can perk
up pretty
quick because his reactions are all still kid-like. When he is happy,
he is real, real happy; and when he is sad, there is no gloomier looking soul
on this earth.
 But the good
part of Barney--the strong part--is his ability to bounce back from whatever
has gotten him down. Barney just will not stay down for long. He will
survive. While he may not be to sharpest knife in the drawer, somehow Bernhard
P. Milton Oliver Fife just keeps on going strong. And you've got to admire that.

Lydia, I can't stand a man who is old in his heart. I don't mind a man who is a
little
young in his knees or a little weak in his back, but I can't stand a man who is
old in
his heart.

Barney Thelma Lou

2006-04-01 Thread Ruth Stanley
I agree with Janet's take on whether Barney Thelma Lou had real feelings for
each other. Barney's expression on his face when she introduced her husband,
revealed it all, Thelma Lou's as she told him showed she still cared for him.
I think as she wrote, it was the fear of commitment that kept him from asking
her to be his wife. Thelma Lou must have felt that since she hadn't heard from
him, that it was a hopeless situation as far as he was concerned. It's not
surprising that she found a new love who wanted to marry her.

I watched that episode this week, and as much as I like TAGS, I've always
disliked that episode, not for the fact that Thelma Lou married (frankly
Barney deserved it for abandoning her). But rather for Barney abruptly
getting over his grief because a woman he barely knew (Nettie) came on to
him. It's shallow writing and it makes it seem as Thelma Lou and all those
years together meant nothing to Barney.
Doug Gibson

Yes sir, you have beat the game chapter

I recognize that there are some huge TAGS fans in this area. Additionally,
I also am a huge TAGS fans. So much so that when my children were still in
their cribs (they are now 17 and about to enter college) I would play TAGS
episodes recorded on cassette tapes instead of lullabies. I also remember
from the forum rules that we are to keep things positive and discuss the
better things regarding TAGS. However...

First, let me say that I believe TAGS is the absolute best Television has to
offer. Yet with that said, there is one TAGS episode that I will probably
not be watching again.

I happened to watch the above mentioned episode just last night on a local
cable access channel and was very disappointed in the story line. I even
knew what was going to happen and it still aggravated me. I will never
understand why this episode was written as it was. The former gentleman's
remarks are absolutely correct.

The look on Barney's face at the very moment Thelma Lou introduces her
husband is without a doubt one of the lowest moments of any TAGS scenes.

When I need an uplifting moment, I turn to TAGS. This particular episode is
not very uplifting. It is way to true to life. I'll be stickin' to my
beloved BW episodes.

Enjoy the forum...

Barney's feelings for Thelma Lou

2006-03-31 Thread Janet Anderson
Remember the class reunion? He acted all sad and lonely when he found out
Thelma Lou had married until
another girl showed him some interest, and then he perked up real quick. This
was probably done to end the show on a happy note, but it sure left me feeling
like Barney's love for Thel was not all that deep, and maybe that was the real
reason why he had not asked her to marry him in the first place. And you can't
really blame him for not marrying her if his love wasn't deep enough no matter
how WE felt about it. How did you feel? Based on his actions, DID Barney
love Thelma Lou enough to marry her years earlier?

Lydia, I haven't seen that episode in a long time (looking forward to the
season six set coming out so that I can view it again), but I'll put in my two
cents' worth anyway. (Seems like I've been putting in my two cents a lot
lately. If I keep it up, pretty soon I'll have put in enough to give Olive a
sizeable tip! She has those kids to feed, you know.)

Well, I'll agree that Barney's reaction to the interest of another woman was
probably used to end the episode in an upbeat way. However, with all due
respect to you, Lydia, I don't think that it indicated that Barney's love for
Thelma Lou was in some way lacking. Rather, I believe he was allowing himself
this diversion to mask the pain he was feeling (reminds me of that old Smokey
Robinson song Tears of a Clown). There is too much evidence that points to
Barney's feelings for Thelma Lou being the real thing:

1. Barney dated Thelma Lou on a steady basis for several years.
2. Barney told Thelma Lou that she was the only girl for him, the only girl he
loved.
3. When Andy pressed Barney about when he and Thelma Lou would marry, Barney
never nixed the idea that he would marry her. He just wasn't ready to take the
big step yet.
4. Remember how easily Barney fell into the conversation about the furniture
when he and Thelma Lou were walking home from the movie? It was obvious that,
in his mind, Barney was planning on making a home with Thelma Lou in the
future. It was only when he realized what he was saying that he backed off and
qualified the situation with words like someday and if.
5. And the clincher--Barney didn't marry anyone else. Though he dated other
women, no one took the place of Thelma Lou.

The obstacle in Barney and Thelma Lou's relationship was not that Barney's
feelings didn't run deep enough for Thelma Lou, but that Barney had a fear of
commitment that he hadn't yet overcome. That's my take on it, anyway! I'll be
interested to read what others think.

I have to believe that Thelma Lou did not know about Juanita. ...All we do
know is that when Barney left Mayberry, she left too and she married soon
after. But it was a failed marriage. So sad. All those years wasted
that could have been spent together.
Remember the class reunion? He acted all sad and lonely when he
found out Thelma Lou had married until
another girl showed him some interest, and then he perked up real
quick. This was probably done to end the show on a happy note, but it
sure left me feeling like Barney's love for Thel was not all that deep,
and maybe that was the real reason why he had not asked her to marry him
in the first place. And you
can't really blame him for not marrying her if his love wasn't deep enough
no matter how WE felt about it.
How did you feel? Based on his actions, DID Barney love Thelma Lou enough
to marry her years earlier?

I agree that Thel did NOT know about Juanita. In addition to what you
said, remember that Andy was warning Barney not to take Juanita to
Morelli's because everybody goes out there (and therefore they might be
seen together).

I hope I'm not violating a number rule when I say this: The episode where
Thelma Lou comes back married (interestingly to the foreman of a wrecking
crew) is the one I absolutely will NOT watch. It came on the other day and
I quickly changing the channel as I explained my position to my darling
person. The episode wasn't fair to Barney. Yes, ol' Barn and Thel loved
each other deeply, but their relationship was cheapened with Thelma Lou
having married (though who could blame her) and even more when Barney
rebounded to Nettie Albright (who had a certain resemblance to
Flora). There are some things I just won't abide.

I can't help it - I am partial to Nettie. Alberta Walker who played
Nettie went on to play Flora Malherbe who was Goober's girlfriend in
the color episodes. If Barn hadn't had a little chemistry with Nettie,
then Goober might have never had Flora as a girlfriend! But I have to
agree, it was a rather shallow flip flop for Barney

I watched that episode this week, and as much as I like TAGS, I've

Thelma Lou and Barney--Oh, How They Loved

2006-03-28 Thread bcq145
I perfectly agree with Thelma Lou (Janet) that close-ups of our Thelma Lou often
gave an indication of just how much she loved her Barney. (Sadly we often got
the
opposite impression from Helen to Andy as close-ups of her too often showed
her annoyance of him.)
One of my favorite moments is when John Masters is brutally critiquing
Barney's singing and
the look on Thelma Lou's face is priceless. She looks absolutely heart-broken.
Yes, she knows Barney can't sing a lick--remember her speech to Andy?
He's a warm wonderful human being...the man I want to marry...the man I want
to be the father of my children...but he can't sing a lick!
And, yes, she knows Barney has trouble accepting the cold hard truth about
himself.
But she still loves him and she wants to protect him.
That is part of loving a person. You accept them warts and all. And you always
want to protect them from people like John Masters who used truth like a sledge-
hammer. Thelma Lou could be a little childish at times (in this way she was a
lot like Barney),
but one never doubted her basic good nature nor her love for her man. She is a
great woman. I just wish Barney could have fully appreciated her sooner.

I tend to be in the crowd that thinks Thelma Lou knew about Juanita, or at
least suspected. It's just that Barney didn't flaunt Juanita in her face,
where as the fun girls were right there interrupting Thelma Lou's and Barney's
plans. It appeared that Barney and Andy were standing up Thelma Lou and Helen
in favor of Skippy and Daphne.

I think Thelma Lou knew Barney loved her and thought he'd come to his senses
and marry her. When it didn't happen in a reasonable time frame, she tried to
move on by marrying that other guy. I really don't think that either Barney or
Thelma Lou actually emotionally moved on though, causing the failure of her
marriage and keeping Barney from committing to anyone else. Kind of
bittersweet.

Anyway, that's my analysis of their relational dynamics. I'm just glad they
ended up together.

Thelma Lou amused at Barney

2006-03-26 Thread Janet Anderson
In my last post, I mentioned that Thelma Lou graciously overlooked most of
Barney's flaws. In fact, she often seemed affectionately amused by them.
That's one of the things I really like about Thelma Lou's character. She was
aware of her man's flaws, but she didn't ridicule or criticize them. Instead,
she found them rather endearing.

One of my favorite such moments is in the Cave Rescue episode when Thelma Lou
convinces Barney to explore the old mining cave, which Andy and Helen have
already entered. Barney walks in reluctantly, pressing his hat down over his
head for fear of bats which, he insists, will lay their eggs in your hair and
make you go crazy. When Thelma Lou tells him that he's seen nothing but a
moth, Barney says that moths can do the same thing! I love to watch Betty
Lynn's face during this scene. Though she chides him a bit for his unwarranted
fears, she is clearly getting a real kick out of Barney's silliness. You can
almost here her thinking to herself, Isn't he a hoot? I sure do love him!

Do any of you recall other moments when Thelma Lou is amused by something
Barney says or does?

Thelma Lou Juanita

2006-03-26 Thread Janet Anderson
In 1990, TBS aired a special 30th anniversary tribute with several cast
members, including Don Knotts and Betty Lynn. At one point, they took
questions from the audience, and some tall skinny goober stood up and asked
Betty if Thelma Lou ever found out about Juanita down to the diner. Betty
replied that Thelma Lou was no dummy, and that she was well aware of
Barney's activities. Don added that Thelma Lou was always Barney's #1 girl,
and that Barney saw Juanita only occasionally, to get a little on the
side.

Yes, Paul, I remember that from the special. Still, I think that was Betty's
own interpretation and not necessarily the writers' intent. When you consider
how upset Thelma Lou was whenever the Fun Girls came to town -- and Barney
didn't even instigate or encourage those encounters! -- it seems unlikely that
Thelma Lou would turn a blind eye to Barney's relationship with Juanita. I
don't think that would be consistent with her character. It's true that Thel
graciously overlooked many of Barney's flaws (even found them endearing and
amusing), but she was not shy about calling him on the carpet when he was
keeping company with another woman, even one who was clearly only looking for a
good time. Of course, that's *my own* interpretation of Thelma Lou's
character!

There's that old saying, The wife (or long-time steady girlfriend, in this
case) is always the last to know!

Thelma Lou and Juanita

2006-03-24 Thread Cynthia Mahoney
I agree with what Thelma Lou (Janet) said in her post about Barney and Thelma
Lou and Juanita.

However, I think that Thelma Lou knew about Barney seeingJuanita, or at least
suspected it., and she just overlooked it. Thelma Lou probably never saw
Barney and Juanita together, so it was easy for her to act like it was not
happening.

I believe that Thelma Lou really was the only girl Barney, well, loved. But
Thelma Lou was a nice, respectable young lady and she did not go in for too
much of Barney's shenanigans. When he got fresh, she slapped him.

Juanita, on the other hand, not only put up with, but encouraged Barney to get
fresh with her. Remember when Barney called her for a date and said he was
taking her to the drive in movies at Mt. Pilot? Juanita must have asked what
movie was showing and Barney said what difference does it make, which implies
that he was planning on them doing something other than watching the show.
Thelma Lou would have hung up on him immediately if he had made such an
insinuation to her. But Juanita didn't hang up on him at all.

I think Thelma Lou did not feel threatened by Juanita because she knew that
Barney was only dating her for one reason. It was the same reason why Barney
liked going to those rabbit girl clubs and why he subscribed to that magazine
that the college kid was selling, you know, the one with the fast lens
photography that captured the ribbon on that girl's foot. Barney did not love
Juanita and Juanita did not love Barney. They were just playmates in a game
that Thelma Lou would not let Barney play with her. And with Juanita around,
Barney could have his fun and Thelma Lou did not have to spend every date
fighting him off.

Now, if Thelma Lou had suspected that there were any romantic intentions
between Barney and Juanita, that would have been a different story. She would
have been jealous and angry like she was when she saw him flirting with that
new girl in town, Melissa.

Like my mother used to tell me, there are some girls that men go out with to
have a good time, but they are not the girls that men want to marry. Juanita
was a good time girl and Thelma Lou was a marrying girl.

Barney probably planned on giving up Juanita once he married Thelma Lou, but he
was having so much fun having his cake and eating it too by dating them both
that he kept putting off marriage until Thelma Lou couldn't wait anymore and he
lost her.

Now, I don't agree with what Barney was doing. He should have been faithful to
Thelma Lou all the way. But he ended up paying the price for not being a one
woman man when Thelma Lou married that other guy and broke Barney's heart.

Barney/Thelma Lou

2006-03-22 Thread Janet Anderson
Actually the episode revealing Thelma Lou's marriage to the other guy also
reveals she was devastated when Barney moved out of town. Perhaps Barney
expected her to wait around for him to send for her and naturally she
didn't.

That's ironic, considering Barney's reaction to one of the times that Andy was
thinking of leaving Mayberry for another job offer. Barney asked something
like, And what about Helen? When Andy said that maybe he would send for her
later, Barney seemed to think that Andy's answer was pretty lame!

Barney, Thelma Lou, and Juanita

2006-03-21 Thread Janet Anderson
I have a question that I have been wondering about for a long timeIn
some episodes it seems that Thelma Lou and Juanita are both refered to in
regards to being Barney's girlfriends. One episode that comes to mind is
the Filling Station Robbery. When Barney takes the picture of himself out
of the envelope, Goober says, You should have copies made and give one to
Thelma Lou. Then at the end of the episode Barney calls up Juanita. This
has always seemed strange to me. I think there are other incidents similar
to this in other episodes. Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone know
the explanation?

Connie, I must say that this is one of Barney's character traits that I don't
like. Despite at times admitting to Thelma Lou that she is the only girl he
loves, he is not faithful to her and sees Juanita on the side. Of course, the
scenes where Barney is talking to Juanita on the phone are always funny, but,
as a woman, I would prefer Barney to be a one-woman man.

The situation is made pretty clear towards the end of the fifth season in
Barney and Thelma Lou--Phfftt! Thelma Lou realizes that Barney is taking her
for granted, so she decides to make him jealous by going to the movies with
Gomer. The ruse works, of course, and Barney gets good and steamed. Andy
tries to get him to be more understanding, saying, You've stepped out a few
times, too, you know. (Disclaimer to my fellow trained noticers: These may
not be exact quotes!) Barney asks him what he means, and Andy responds,
Juanita at the diner. Barney says, That's different! There are other
times when Barney shows his possessiveness of Thelma Lou, such as when Jeff
Pruitt comes to town or when Edger Coleman helps Thelma Lou glue the covers
back on the hymnals. So Barney expects Thelma Lou to be faithful to him, but
he thinks it's okay for him to go out with Juanita behind Thelma Lou's back.
When it comes to women, Barney has a double standard.

Which raises the question of Juanita. What was she like? I picture Juanita as
being the kind of woman who wears a lot of make-up, who always has her eye out
for a man, and who is of rather easy virtue. Barney's conversations with
Juanita imply that he dates her for one reason only. Though Thelma Lou seems
blithely ignorant of Juanita as a rival, Juanita MUST know about Thelma Lou, as
everyone regards Barney and Thelma Lou as a couple. That tells me that
Juanita dates Barney just for a fun time and not for the purpose of developing
a serious relationship.

I know I'm getting way too deep on this, but that makes me wonder--Why doesn't
Barney stick with sweet, lovely, faithful (despite Barney's suspicions from
time to time) Thelma Lou? Why does he feel the need to step out with Juanita
on the sly? Well, we all know that Barney has a fragile ego. It requires
continual bolstering. Though Thelma Lou is good at this, she is also not
afraid to stand up to Barney or take him to task. My theory (It's just a
theory. What's your theory?) is that Juanita is Barney's ego booster. She
probably fawns over him and makes him out to be Mayberry's answer to Don Juan,
hence Barney's swaggering manner whenever he speaks to her.

I'm wading deeper still--Could it be that Barney's continual reluctance to
commit to Thelma Lou and his seeming need for another woman to feed his ego
resulted in the split that led Barney to Raleigh and drove Thelma Lou to marry
another man? Of course, we have to imagine all this going on behind the
scenes, since the end of season five doesn't explain Barney's departure. I
guess this is my way of tying up those loose ends!

Thanks for bearing with the long post!

The ever philosophical,
Thelma Lou
