A nice reference - and another question

2020-10-23 Thread Joe
I was reading an article about the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and saw
this quote which I thought was worth passing on. The reporter was talking
to a guy who lives there, and this is part of what he said:

*“I joke with my wife because I watch ‘The Andy Griffith Show"and I said,
‘Why can’t society just be like that?’” he said, alluding to the idyllic
life in the imaginary town of Mayberry.*

*In the Upper Peninsula, life is already a bit like in Mayberry for many of
the nearly 300,000 residents.*

*North of the five-mile long Mackinac Bridge that connects the two parts of
Michigan, violent crime is rare — there were only five murders in the
Upper Peninsula in 2019.*

Now, my question - a couple weeks ago I asked about where the ball field
was located in the episode "The Ball Game", and got a great answer from
Dennis B. After recently watching "Opie's Piano Lesson" with Flip Conroy
as the football coach, I wondered about where the football practice scenes
were filmed. The views were more limited than in the baseball episode, but
the bleachers looked like the ones in the ball field episode. Also, you can
hear highway traffic in the background, so I thought maybe it was the same
location - ???

Possible Andy Griffith reference

2020-06-16 Thread m white
TAGS fans,
Okay, this isn't exactly TAGS-related, but I wonder if it is Andy Griffith
related. I've been reading through "The Complete Pogo" books from Fantagraphic
Books and from Oct 11 to Nov 1, 1959 the Sunday strips involved a typically
madcap story of the characters playing football. Unfortunately, they pop their
football early on and play the rest of the game with a pumpkin. Made me wonder
if it were in any way inspired by Andy's classic "What it was Was Football"
routine. Walt Kelly, artist responsible for Pogo, was known to be a big fan of
popular comedic albums, so I wouldn't be surprised if Andy's routine (which had
come out just the year before) led to Walt's strips.

I was listening to the NPR program "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me" this morning.
Their celebrity guest this week was the Hollywood
producer/screenwriter/director Peter Farrelly. During the interview
portion of the segment, Farrelly told the host that the biggest influence
on him creatively was watching "The Andy Griffith Show", which seemed to
really surprise the host and panelists.

Farrelly made two great points - first, that every episode of TAGS taught
some kind of lesson, and was not simply for laughs; and, that Andy Griffith
did not want jokes in the scripts - that the comedy was supposed to come
from the characters. Farrelly said he tries to stay true to those things
when he's writing or directing a film

All in all, very nice to hear - and he was right about both points.

references are at about the 1:10 mark and the 4:40 mark)

One more Train Reference

2008-11-19 Thread Ken Anderson

I thought of another train reference in Mayberry after sending in my
original list. In Family Visit Andy suggest that they jump on a
Pullman and go to Lake Charles to visit Uncle Ollie and Aunt Nora.

You know what they say about widows.

Andy reference in cartoon

2007-03-19 Thread m white
TAGS fans,

(my apologies if I have sent this twice, but I had a problem on the PC)

If you didn't see the TAGS reference in my comic strip last Tuesday, you can
see it on-line at www.tuttles.net, then click on the top cartoon--that'll take
you to the archive. Look at the 7th cartoon from the top. Or, click on
http://burtcottage.dailyread.com/Sams_Place/tutep1381.1390.html to get there
quicker. While you're there, feel free to look around.

How, would YOU have gotten the trivia question in the strip?

Amber alert reference

2006-09-15 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (SBC-OPS)
i dont mean to be a party pooper... but can we use another term other
than Amber Alert? it just doesnt seem right (to me anyway) to use such
a serious systems name for Mr. Swump sightings... the Amber Alert is a
very serious thing to help find missing children who are kiddnapped and
in danger of being raped, exploited and murdered.. i really dont think
its appropriate to use the term so loosely and jokingly... sorry if this
post is inappropriate... but this really bothers me.

Dear ladynoogs45744 and anyone else offended by this reference. Perhaps
you wouldn't have been so bothered if you understood where that
reference came from. Barney used the term Amber Alert (trained
noticers will help me with the episode) when he was trying to impress
some outsiders. He said further, referring to himself and Andy One of
us will be awake and alert at all times So that's the TAGS reference I
was pulling in. I thin I even mentioned that one of us would be awake
at all times, to help folks remember that episode. That you think I
would use it in the modern vernacular is a little bothersome to me, but
I understand your false assumption if you didn't know where the
reference came from.

I guess we do need to be cautious about terms that could be
misunderstood. Please understand that was not the intent. This is
Mayberry. Amber Alert is a Deputy term here.

With best regards
TH Untrained Voice

TAGS Reference on Sanford Son

2006-06-19 Thread Julie Bowers
I was watching an episode of Sanford Son over the weekend in which a
TAGS reference was made. Aunt Esther had gone to bail Fred, Lamont and
Rollo out of jail. As the police officer was showing her to their cell,
he said Here you go ma'am, Winkin', Blinkin' Nod. I thought that
was pretty cute!
