A nice reference - and another question
I was reading an article about the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and saw this quote which I thought was worth passing on. The reporter was talking to a guy who lives there, and this is part of what he said: *“I joke with my wife because I watch ‘The Andy Griffith Show"and I said, ‘Why can’t society just be like that?’” he said, alluding to the idyllic life in the imaginary town of Mayberry.* *In the Upper Peninsula, life is already a bit like in Mayberry for many of the nearly 300,000 residents.* *North of the five-mile long Mackinac Bridge that connects the two parts of Michigan, violent crime is rare — there were only five murders in the Upper Peninsula in 2019.* Now, my question - a couple weeks ago I asked about where the ball field was located in the episode "The Ball Game", and got a great answer from Dennis B. After recently watching "Opie's Piano Lesson" with Flip Conroy as the football coach, I wondered about where the football practice scenes were filmed. The views were more limited than in the baseball episode, but the bleachers looked like the ones in the ball field episode. Also, you can hear highway traffic in the background, so I thought maybe it was the same location - ??? ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Possible Andy Griffith reference
TAGS fans, Okay, this isn't exactly TAGS-related, but I wonder if it is Andy Griffith related. I've been reading through "The Complete Pogo" books from Fantagraphic Books and from Oct 11 to Nov 1, 1959 the Sunday strips involved a typically madcap story of the characters playing football. Unfortunately, they pop their football early on and play the rest of the game with a pumpkin. Made me wonder if it were in any way inspired by Andy's classic "What it was Was Football" routine. Walt Kelly, artist responsible for Pogo, was known to be a big fan of popular comedic albums, so I wouldn't be surprised if Andy's routine (which had come out just the year before) led to Walt's strips. I was listening to the NPR program "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me" this morning. Their celebrity guest this week was the Hollywood producer/screenwriter/director Peter Farrelly. During the interview portion of the segment, Farrelly told the host that the biggest influence on him creatively was watching "The Andy Griffith Show", which seemed to really surprise the host and panelists. Farrelly made two great points - first, that every episode of TAGS taught some kind of lesson, and was not simply for laughs; and, that Andy Griffith did not want jokes in the scripts - that the comedy was supposed to come from the characters. Farrelly said he tries to stay true to those things when he's writing or directing a film All in all, very nice to hear - and he was right about both points.
