TV Theme songs
When you talk to me about tv theme songs you are preaching to the choir...I wrote the book "The Good Time Rock and Roll Trivia book" in 2009...It might still be available on Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.com. In it I list two page of TV Theme songs.. The first tv theme songs to reach #1 on Billboard were S.W.A.T. from "S.W.A.T. by Rhythm Heritage in 1976...It was followed by "Welcome Back" Theme song from "Welcome Back Kotter" by John Sebastian also in 1976. Other theme songs that made the top ten during the broadcasting of TAGS were "Three Stars Will Shine Tonight", Them From "Dr. Kildare" #10 . Others which made the top 20 before 1968 were, Dragnet, #3, 1953... Theme from "Zorro" #17, 1959 "Peter Gunn Theme, #8, 1959 Them from "Bonanza " #19, 1961"Three Stars Will Shine Tonight" from "Dr. Kildare", #10, 1962..."Secret Agent Man", #3, 1966. Now you can argue that the TAGS theme was the most popular during it's run but it would be hard to prove against themes like "Bonanza" one of the two show that outranked TAGS in the Neilsen ratings...The other would be "Gunsmoke"...and the fact that the TAGS theme was never released to radio on a 45 RPM for play...So I don't know anything about K-LOVE but their assessment that The TAGS theme is even now the number one them song doesn't hold up...Granted it is a chirpy little tune and very catchy but it was never given the chance to compete with the other major theme song recordingsand before anyone tries to correct me..yes..there were other tv theme songs which made billboard through the 60's and 70's. TV Theme Songs
Don't get me wrong, and I do love "The Fishing Hole" as Andy's song is officially named, but I have a hard time believing it is the #1 TV theme of all time.First, you would have to know what they mean by #1 TV theme of all time.Is it the theme that more people can recognize and name, or is it the theme that people love the most? There were a lot of TV themes that made the Billboard Top 100 Chart, in fact a few went to #1 on the chart including "Theme From Friends", "Theme From Dukes of Hazzard", and "Welcome Back Kotter". As far as the TV theme that more people can recognize, I would be willing to bet there would be very few people over the age of 21 who could not tell you "that's the Lone Ranger song" when you play the William Tell Overture. And who among us could forget "Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale" or "Here's the story of a lovely lady". Lately I've been feeling nostalgic, and listening to a bunch of old LPs that I haven't played in decades. One in particular is "With Love from a Chorus" by The Robert Shaw Chorale. For them that don't know, Robert Shaw was probably the greatest choir director the world has ever known, maybe even better than John Masters. Anyway, this particular record includes several songs which were used on TAGS and/or Gomer Pyle -- USMC. Included are Love's Old Sweet Song, Believe Me, If All These Endearing Young Charms, Sweet Genevieve, Seeing Nellie Home, and Barney's favorite, Juanita. Fortunately, Robert Shaw realized that bongos didn't fit in too good with Seeing Nellie Home, so they did all of these songs a cappella. Mayberry Songs and Mayberry Weather
Hi Gang! I think my favorite songs in Mayberry are: 1. "Mayberry Union High" (when sung by Andy and Barney) 2. "The Manhunt" (especially when played as background music to Barney 'going over the top.') 3. "Oh When the Saints Go Marching In" (conducted by "Earl" and played by the orchestra in the "Fun Girls" episode at the big dance) 4. That little instrumental dance number (title unknown) that makes numerous appearances (when the Fun Girls show up at Andy's house at the end of the ? episode and have the radio/phonograph playing and Barn says "Ange...since it's Friday night? They *are* good dancers.") Also, it appears when Aunt Bee is teaching Opie how to dance, although the arrangement is different and the tempo is slower. It usually features an electric guitar as the lead instrument. It might appear elsewhere. 5. "Chattanooga Choo Choo" ("The Return of Barney Fife" - played by Carl Benson's Wildcats, consisting of drummer, accordionist, and Mrs ? (the librarian) on saxophone). There's a neat site called "rocklopedia fakebandica, dedicated to 'fake bands,' which listed this one. (www.fakebands.com) Over to Mayberry weather, yes, that big electrical storm in "Dogs, dogs, dogs" also came to my mind. Didn't it also storm when Andy and Barney were checking up on "Quiet Sam"? I recall talk of there being deputies left over from 'the flood,' as well. Over and Under, Clyde "Barn" ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

OK, so it's too difficult to choose a favoriteI love them all! I really like when Charlene and the boys do There Is a Time, but another one I enjoy hearing is when Opie sings The Crawdad Song with Andy on guitar. He was such a natural child actor. Nowadays, it seems like so many kids are stilted, and are either reading their lines or are being fed the lines off-camera. (Like we can't tell!!!) Ron Howard was, and still is one of the greatest! They sang "Spread a little sunshine" for Ben Weaver. And they sang a little together on "Lose all their guilty sins" which is a gospel song. And then of course Mayberry Union High. Hey ya'll Your to smart for me The answer to the song was 'The Midnight Special'. It reached #16 in february of 1960 and Andy sang it sometime in November, I think he only sang the original chorus and parodied the rest of it toward Barney. So my guess is "Midnight Special," which Andy sang with Jim Lindsey in the episode called "The Guitar Player Returns" from the 1960-61 season. "Midnight Special" was a hit for Paul Evans in 1960. It first charted as a rhythm 'n blues hit for Tiny Grimes in 1948, and made the Billboard Top 40 charts again in 1965 with a version by Johnny Rivers. Rivers' version was also the theme for the "Midnight Special," late night TV show, in the 70's and early 80's. The song was first recorded as a folk song in the 1920's, and has been recorded by artists like Leadbelly, Paul McCartney, Little Richard, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Harry Belafonte, The Kingston Trio, Van Morrison and even Andy Griffith, himself. Though he had a few other chart hits, Paul Eveans is probabaly more famous as a songwriter. Among the songs he has written are "Roses Are Red" (Bobby Vinton), and two Elvis hits - "I Gotta Know" and "The Next Step Is Love."___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Darling Family Songs
I was just wondering if the names of songs that the Darling Boys played (such as "Never Hit Your Grandma With a Great Big Stick", "Slimy River Bottom", "Tearin' Up Your Old Clothes For Rags" etc.) were actually names of songs or were they just made up. I'm pretty sure that "Slimy River Bottom" is also called "Doug's Tune". Andy songs
The Rascal Flatts entry, as Miss Crump would say, raises some interesting points. How many other songs about TAGS, Mayberry, etc. are there? One of the best known may be ""The Andy Griffith Show" by the Bellamy Brothers from their 1993 album "Rip Off The Knob." Another big one was Confederate Railroad's "Elvis and Andy," off their 1994 album "Notorious." Of course our favorite deputy, David Browning, did a whole tribute album in 2005 called "Thinkin' About Mayberry." I found some lesser known songs listed at www.allmusic.com, including "Barney Fife" by Dwight Oglesbee, several different songs called "Mayberry" including the one by Rascal Flatts. There's also Mayberry RIP, Mayberry Blues, Mayberry Lsdna, Another Mayberry, Chaos in Mayberry, Bury Me In Mayberry, Santa Goes To Mayberry and Searching the Map for Mayberry, among others. Kind of strange that they don't list "Mayberry, My Hometown" by the songwriting team of Clara Edwards & Bee Taylor, nor anything by Jim Lindsey, Keevy Hazelton, Bobby Fleet & his Band With the Beat (did Freddie take over when Bobby joined the army?) or Opie's band (wasn't it called the Sound Committee?). If all of this sounds trivial, just remember "Got time to breathe - got time for music." Mule songs
<<<>> Nope, two different songs. "Flop-Eared Mule" is the song Andy sings for Mr. Maxwell's folk song album in Mayberry on Record (it begins "used to have an old banjo, was all strung up with twine, and the only song you could hear me sing was 'I wish that gal was mine.' ") Conversation with a Mule is a different song. I don't know how the tune goes, but I found the lyrics on the Internet -- here is the first verse: Old Mule, you're the son of a donkey, and I'm in the image of God, Yet here we work, hitched together, a-toilin' and tillin' sod. I wonder if you work for me, or I work for you, old Mule-- At times I think it's a partnership between a mule and a doggone fool. --Paul Mulik ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Christmas songs/movie news
Hello Fellow Mayberryians (ites?), First of all, I would like to say that every now and thenI like to part my hair on the wrong side so that when I look in the mirror, I know what everyone else is seeing! Secondly, I'm pretty excited because one of my songs ("Messed Up Everywhere Blues") is going to be used in a movie starring Randy Travis called "The Wager." Also appearing in the film is Nancy Stafford, who of course starred with good ol Andj in "Matlock." I don't know if it's going to get a theatrical release or not. There's a trailer of it here: http://www.wager-themovie.com/images/ wtrailer.mov Also, I have a couple of Christmas songs you can download if you want, at http://jasonharrod.com/news.html I hope everyone is well, Jason ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://mail.wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

The name of the book is 357 Songs We Love To Sing, and it was copyrighted in 1938 by the Hall and McCreary ( they must be from somewheres else) company. Amazing to find that many songs that were used in the show in this one book. I may have even missed some!" "Ol' Dan Tucker" is an old folk song that pre-dates the Civil War and was popular in western North Carolina. "Believe Me, If All..." is even older still - at least as old as the early 18th century in England (or was it Ireland? Well anyhow, somewhere over there in the old country). A whole lot of Appalachian music comes from British ballads. Oh, yeah, guess what tune Barney plays on the harmonica in "The Loaded Goat?" -- That's right, "Juanita." Lots o' luck to you and yours! *Not exactly songs in the Mayberry Top 10.
For the sake of discussion rather than argument, I think "Impossible Dream" fits Mayberry perfectly. Andy fights every "unbeatable foe" and beats them. But then I guess they weren't unbeatable. Next line. I think Mayberry's quiet strength would handle any sorrow. OK. Then the sorrows are not unbearable. Last line. Ah, this one nobody's gonna logic me out of this one! "To run where the brave dare not go." Even Opie fits here. Didn't he stand up to the bully? And Andy runs after the most horrible villians. IMHO Mayberry's kind of an "Impossible Dream"kind of place where people do the right and heroic things regardless of what may result. Again, discussion not argument. And the drinking song sure would be at odds with Mayberry--unless, of course, Otis is singing it.. :-) Martha Humphreys Huntsville, AL ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://mail.wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
