Photoshop Graphics

Depending on the complexity of the image it could be either format.
The more complex an image is in terms of number of
colors/graduations of color the more likely jpg will provide better
results. But if you are using Photoshop why don't you simply try
both and see which one gives you an image quality/size you are happy
 with. ...

In Photoshop there is a nice feature (don't know in English). It's on
the first Menu (I think it's called 'Files') and below'Save as...' you
find a Menu Item 'Save for Web...' or so.
Using this option you can play around until you find the right setting.

Hope this helps. Have a nice day :)

2003-02-24 Thread Joseph Harris
I am always surprised at the visual quality on screen of so little file
information. As Eddie points out, with the Save for Web choice on the File
menu you have a wide set of choices to play with (probably more with PS 7
than 5.5) and about the same with Image Ready.

In the end I find file size (download time) is the bigger factor than
quality; and it can even be that different pictures need different formats.
Sophisticated as the machines and progams are they are still logical idiots.

If you want that quality in print or through computer printer you are into a
whole other ballgame, of course.

[wdvltalk] Re: PHP read file question

2003-02-24 Thread Adam Cork
Hi,

I assume you're using a loop to write the lines of the text file. Are you
writing out the headings of the fields prior to the data? If so solution
could be:

write FieldName1, FieldName2, FieldName3
loop
write newline
write Field1, Field2, Field3
next

By not writing a new line between the heading and the loop, but specifying
the new line before the data for each line, you shouldn't have a blank line
at the end.

Not sure if this will help, depends on how you are going about writing the
data out.

Cheers,
Adam

it uses 'lossy' compression -- which means you can perceivably lose picture
information. [Side note - PhotoShop will save as jpeg with a range of
'lossy' values of 0 to 10 where 0 is the most lossy. On pictures at 640x480,
I can only perceive a loss of quality at about 3 and below.]

I think most browsers support the newer png graphics format, which I've

[wdvltalk] [OldNewComer] back and fresh

2003-02-24 Thread Paul Larue
Hi all, I was a member of wdvl some time back but have not been using it for
more than a year and a half now. Now i'm back and suppose I should introduce
myself first for those who do not know me and for those who forgot me.

My name's paul and i'm in web dev for about 4 years now and i'd be happy to
help/tip whenever the possibility arises.

Blink to casey, cheryl d. wise, greg cymbala, howard and the rest who helped
me a lot before... I dunno if all of them are still here.

anyway, here's my first prob...

I installed mysql 4 on red hat. fine. done. working.
I need innodb to be installed too. here things get trickier. the manual says
i should edit my /etc/my.cnf file and add some parameters to [mysqld]
I did that, i even copied/pasted the code they throw as a sample to avoid
typos and still mysql fails.

Normal way to proceed would be
1 edit the file
2 add the params
3 stop mysql and start it again.

but when I stop mysql, service reports [ FAILED ]

any clues?

Thanks a lot and... happy to be back.

Paul

[wdvltalk] % loaded info in browser status bar

Hey Everyone,

Who knows how, or if it's possible to access the information available in a
browser's status bar. I know how to load text into it - I don't really care
about that. I want to be able to read the load progress of a page in order
to make a graphic that represents the load progress, on a non-Flash web
page. My feeble first attempts at loading window.status.value into a text
form resulted in undefined. Anybody know how to do this?

Thanks Heather,

I will pass that on. I will also check my own site for it.

Don't forget to set your background default to white. For those of us
strange people who don't have a different color than white as our normal
background it makes webpages that forget to set a white default look
funky.

[wdvltalk] RE: site comments please

2003-02-24 Thread Joseph Harris
Sorry Ben,

I gave the wrong impression.I was just attempting to say that it was a
valid worry, and we were already seeking advice and preparing to entice 'the
real one' into being nice to us. It was a fair point for you to make and I
took it as friendly advice.

I am genuinely interested in thoughts on the subject. The only real
challenge that I can think of might be 'passing off' and there is no way we
are doing that. It is no more than parody. Of course it is also cross
border, which complicates.

But if they seriously objected I reckon we would have to bow to the big
bucks. That is why I would be happy to learn if there might be any other
grounds on which we are vulnerable.

Also keen to have comment on all aspects of the site.

Again, sorry for being too cryptic.

[wdvltalk] RE: Alt tag question

2003-02-24 Thread Furry, Tim
I wrote, previously:
FT While poking around, I found this page:
FT http://kspope.com/assistech/index.php.

FT After poking through our website, I'm really wondering if it's
FT possible to have a visually appealing website (i.e. at least a few
FT graphics) and an easy-to-navigate aural-only site at the same time.

Abigail commented:
Actually, Tim, I think that the site you found is an
excellent example of a visually appealing plus easy to
navigate site. I think it's a great model to start with.

I reply:
I think so too, in IE. While it doesn't break in NN4.7x, it looks
rather bad...bad enough that if I were to duplicate the effort with our
site, it would be unacceptable to the powers-that-be.

Abigail further commented:
Can you clarify what some of your major problems are, or
post a link to whatever page is giving you headaches?

I reply thusly:
I think my biggest problem is that our largest client uses NN4.7 as
their base browser, so I must support it. Furthermore, my requirements
are that the site appear the same in both IE and NN4.7. Since NN4.7
doesn't do CSS mouseovers well (that I've discovered, anyway), I end up
downloading GIFs for the left menu - lots of them. I don't like doing
it but it's the only way I've found to force consistent look between
NN4.7 and IE. My log files are full of GIF requests. :-)

I don't really have a headache yet...I just haven't started looking at
my site's pages deeply enough to start working on this aspect of things.
I have a feeling that it's going to be messy. I've put in alt tags for
all the menu images (I wasn't aware that I could get away with alt=; I
may have to play with that some), but am not really sure where to go
from there. www.foulston.com I imagine it'll take a bit of redesign.

I never said I visited the page. Landoverbaptist.org is a well known
site full of racial bigotry and religious intolerance. It is
irresponsible to promote such a site that calls Arabs desert-n**

This deserves an apology. I am asking the moderators to look into

There's the rub. You don't have control over the loading as you do with an .swf

As a Christian, I find that site extremely offensive. Shame on you for

As a human being, I find your intolerance to be intolerable. Which of
us can step outside our door (or turn on a tv or a radio!?) these days
without having to encounter the possibility of being offended? Why is
it that some people don't seem to get the concept that a person can
*TURN AWAY* from something if they find it offensive? Why is it, also,
that those most easily offended seem to be believe that what offends
them should always offend others? Bear in mind, that I'm not defending
any web site or idea or anything in particular... I'm speaking of
generalities. People need to be free to make their own choices in
entertainment, beliefs, etc. I think you also misuse the term
religious bigotry. It seems to me that that phrase better describes
those of strong religious persuasions who seek to impose their beliefs
on anyone who sees things differently.
