He'd better not come round here! I haven't had my
email from him yet! (And yes I did sign the
petition!) According to the 1 o'c BBC news he's
sent out 1.7 something million this morning! I only want one!

(Doesn't 1.7 million constitute spamming LOL)

Peter
PS - for those outside UK who are wondering what
I'm on about, there has been an online petition
against proposed road charging running on the 10
Downing Street site. Over 1.7 million people
signed in protest by the time it closed at
midnight last night and Tony Blair has said he'll
reply to everyone!. Of course as always he'll
probably say "I read what you said but we'll do what I want to do regardless."

Re: [wdvltalk] Which language to use?

2007-02-21 Thread Peter MacGregor

Thanks for that Drew.

I decided to have a crack at this while I was on
holiday in Australia recently and my son - who is
a full-time consultant to the Australian
Government on their IT work in their equivalent
tot he DSS (or whatever we call it now!) - showed
me stuff he was dong for himself on his own web
site using WAMP and Joomla. I got the basic idea
fairly quickly so now plan to produce a site
using it. Probably take me some time but Joomla
has a very comprehensive manual and good forum
and I've also got all of you on here, not as many
as we used to have some years ago, sadly, as it's
always sad to see old friends fade away, but
plenty of good advice I've been able to draw on.

Look forward to seeing you all around for the
next ten years while I get to grips with this!

There are some really knowledgeable people on this list when it comes
to php so if you have any problems ask away. And of course there are
also php lists.

If you have a server at home, php and mysql are a breeze to add even
for windows.

Having moved from Perl to php I can say it is something you can pick
up at the basic to intermediate levels without too much trouble. The
manual is helpful but like so many manuals, only after you reach the
point where you already understand half of it.

Re: [wdvltalk] Which language to use? - Linda?

2007-02-21 Thread Joseph Harris
What I can't work out with these automatic responses is why -
since it is sent to the responder from the list - it sends these
messages to the original sender and not to the list, which has
become the immediate sender; if any of that makes sense!

And thenHit reply and although that goes to the list the
info is of the original sender.   That still doesn't answer it;
the list remains the reply address. One makes effort to extract
the original sender's address if there is a need to use it.

Well digits to the world - I mean here's to the digital world.

Joseph

PHP's fairly easy to pick up if you know Perl/C style syntax, it
integrates really well with MySQL and Postgres Databases too.

Check out the following sites:

www.php.net
www.devshed.com

There's loads of others out there for tutorials etc, and if you're after

And even I have been able to understand and

PHP's fairly easy to pick up if you know Perl/C style syntax,
it

integrates really well with MySQL and Postgres Databases too.

Check out the following sites:

www.php.net
www.devshed.com
www.mysql.org

There's loads of others out there for tutorials etc, and if
you're after
a book, Jono Bacon (http://www.jonobacon.org/) has written a
book at

looks excellent and is available from Amazon

HTH,

And even I have been able to understand and learn some php/mysql,
so it must be fairly easy.

I think most of us are still here, but now we know all we need to know
about development so there's no questions left to ask :)

(... yeah, *right*! ;)

Well, if you already know Perl and want to just get the job done, then
that's probably a safe choice :)

If you're up for a challenge and a little learning along the way, then
Matt's right, PHP is pretty easy to learn, and if you already know Perl
you shouldn't find it too hard.

Either way, good luck with it - sounds like a fairly easy project, so
might be a good one to learn PHP with : )

Cheers

Dave P

[wdvltalk] Which language to use?

Been kinda quiet on this list lately - is everyone still out there?
