RE:[wdvltalk] is this site good? [user interest]

2005-02-03 Thread Steven Streight
Now we're really thick into Web Usability.

Thus, I really have to state what I believe is
generally true:

1. Web sites are increasingly expected to be "stand
alone" corporate entities, as more users discover the
web site first, and know nothing about the "brick and
mortar" operation, especially the non-nationals, those
who do not reside in the country of origin of the
company.

2. In database direct marketing, our universal
guideline was that each promotion piece had to,
ideally, contain at least a brief synopsis of the
primary sales pitch: the USP (unique sales
proposition), the major benefit of the product, and
the reason to Act Now, and not wait.

The web site can be viewed as part of the complete
sales bundle advanced to target audiences.

3. E-commerce web sites should indeed *not* assume
that all web visitors are "pre-sold" and just want
more information about the product and order forms.

This would be a huge error. Yet the web site may not
need to go into a long, detailed sales pitch, due to
the rightly expressed impatience and hurry of users,
which I constantly stress and a Major Reality of
Users.

Users are largely trained to skip irrelevant details
and go straight to the About Us, Contact, Order Now,
or whatever they're most interested in doing at the
web site.

Just pursuing the photo question.   I have books of funny poems for sale;
what would be an appropriate photo? Simply people laughing?

2005-02-03 Thread Joseph Harris
Steven, that is a kind comment for which I thank you. But it did produce a
set of answers which together were very thorough and therefore answered my,
as you point out, too general question.

While it can be a little uncomfortable at times I would rather get a full
answer which shows weaknesses before problems arise. So I don't want to
discourage anyone from frankness; and, as became apparent, I hadn't paid
enough attention before seeking judgement!

And I am hoping to get back now to some coding after a spell where I have
been unable to concentrate on it.

I have to agree with Stephen the web is not print! It is not television. It
is its own media and "rules" that work in those mediums do not directly
translate to the web.

People browse magazine for the articles and are attracted (hopefully) to the
ads. While people go to the web to look for information on products.

You make dire assumptions when transposing one medium onto another. The web
is like no other medium and you have your work cut out for you if you wish
to draw corollaries.

2005-02-03 Thread Diane Schips
I just have to jump in here. You would be surprised how many people making
themselves up in berries and roots (though the all-natural, handmade make-up
market is not quite that primitive) make purchases on the web, though they
wouldn't be going to THAT website. Most packaging and supplies are
generally purchased online. Most people don't have the option of wild
harvesting anymore, especially if organic herbs are used.

This is totally beside the point, I know, but I couldn't let it pass.
Believe it or not, this is a growing industry.

You're ignoring the fact that for most businesses their "click and order"
operations are an extension of their "brick and mortar" ones.
Brand identity has generally been established beforehand and online outlets
are provided as an additional method of generating revenue for those who
find it more convenient to shop that way. Thus, it wastes the consumers
time to feed them sales pitches when they simply want to purchase.

Businesses on the web that don't fit into this paradigm tend to be of the
Amazon variety, eTailers with only logistics installations (if that) and no
physical retail shops. However, even in the instance of the Amazons of the
world, companies who's brand identity did not precede their web presence,
you won't find them doing a lot of selling. They simply have what you're
looking for, always available in a few clicks, at better prices than most
and can have it on your doorstep in a matter of days.

Almost all users of the web have a sense of immediacy about their usage,
contributing to the fabled short attention span of the web user.
Whether it is searching for information or products, they want what they
want instantly, with little cruft, introduce it and you stand the chance of
losing them.

Spam proves that indeed "Product in Use for Solving a
> Problem/Gaining a Benefit " does work on the web.

Savvy consumers who know to skip the "Benefit" and go to the specs are our
best hope. Even then, though, the masters of illusion will get you now and
then.

The rule "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" always needs to
be foremost when dealing with advertising.

2005-02-03 Thread Ann Cook
Joseph,

Yes, there are always different viewpoints about content & presentation.
That's why "listening" in on discussions lists and other people's thoughts
are always interesting. Personally, I think an e-commerce site works well if
it has the important information on the top of the page. Is the shopping
cart information important? Well, that all depends. To some it is, to
others, maybe not.

No problem about making me reveal my age. I still get carded occasionally,
and from far away get mistaken as a kid, so I'm still ok with the slightly
under 40 thing! ;-)

Thank you for your comments on the site. You do raise an interesting
point; whether 'content' includes the product, which comes from another
recent thread (but I'm not seeking to develop it!)

Thank you also for pointing out the need for Javascript here.

I'd not seen pop-up windows apart from called content, though it was IE on
another machine. I note the points about tables and HTML issues.

I think what interested me most is css used for the shopping basket. I'd
not seen it float like that, or even kept on the visited page before. I'd
wondered if it was relatively easy to do.

Joseph

As Ann pointed out, js moves it. You'll find any number of shopping cart
schemes in php books, Joseph so if the one on barrym doesn't make sense,
implement one of the php versions. It's like anything else -- the first time
is an agony. After that it's only painful.

I had said:

> that photos of product in use, by typical customer,
> solving a problem or gaining a benefit by using
> product, out performs ads or promotions with no
photo
> or with photo of product alone.

Then Amanda B. replied:

The research you're citing is for "ads or promotions".
 It is worth
noting that the photo needs for a site that expects
its shoppers to
already *want* its products can be very different. As
one of the
earlier posters noted, if I already am convinced that
I want your
sparkly kohl eye pencil, then showing me close ups of
the available
tips and colors is going to produce a lot more sales
than showing me a
little picture of some lady holding one. This is
certainly MY
experience as a shopper--I go to a site knowing what I
want, and
wanting to learn details, not be re-sold.

In usability, as in all things, context is everything.
Amanda Birmingham

And now I add this:

1. Not everyone who goes to an e-commerce web site is
"pre-sold", e.g. for cosmetics, for beauty, for this
specific beauty product, for buying anything at all
anywhere.

2. In a global market, the WORLD wide web, there are
some people who don't even know what commercial
cosmetics are. They either don't use any make up, or
they use home made make up, like berries, roots, etc.

3. The photo of the products, the varieties of
cosmetics, is important for customers who have passed
through preliminary stages of sales preparation.

But that photo should be relegated to a subservient
location further down the main index page, or even
deeper into the site.

The lead photo at top of home page should be something
on the order of an extremely handsome guy gawking or
subtly staring at a woman as she shines with the
radiance of the company's cosmetics...either she's
applying some to herself, or we see her slipping them
back into her purse, or whatever.

Many different ways to do it, but Product in Use for
Solving a Problem/Gaining a Benefit is the proven
superior photo in advertising and, by transference, in
web sites.

I feel this principle is as relevant to this web site
as it is for a Coty print ad in Cosmo.

But I submit to the wisdom of the actual user, the
target audience, a real woman...

...if I don't, my wife might injure me.

Re: [wdvltalk] is this site good?

2005-02-02 Thread Amanda Birmingham
Steven,
Product Photos: I've been in database direct response
marketing since 1978, and have worked for Grey
Advertising, Troy Bilt, etc., not to boast, but my
point is this:
...it is a Proven Fact, proven by A/B split testing,
that photos of product in use, by typical customer,
solving a problem or gaining a benefit by using
product, out performs ads or promotions with no photo
or with photo of product alone.
The research you're citing is for "ads or promotions". It is worth
noting that the photo needs for a site that expects its shoppers to
already *want* its products can be very different. As one of the
earlier posters noted, if I already am convinced that I want your
sparkly kohl eye pencil, then showing me close ups of the available
tips and colors is going to produce a lot more sales than showing me a
little picture of some lady holding one. This is certainly MY
experience as a shopper--I go to a site knowing what I want, and
wanting to learn details, not be re-sold.

In usability, as in all things, context is everything.

Ann,

Thank you for your comments on the site. You do raise an interesting
point; whether 'content' includes the product, which comes from another
recent thread (but I'm not seeking to develop it!)

Thank you also for pointing out the need for Javascript here.

And my apologies for getting you to reveal your age ;-).

Hi. Just putting my 2¢ in as a woman! Personally, I also find the site
colors somewhat garish and the background color kind of hurts my eyes, but
then again, I'm slightly under 40, and might not be their target audience.

I'm not fond of the design, but I must say it's unique. I know you like the
floating shopping cart on the right, but I think placing the cart in another
spot would allow more of that valuable screen real estate to be used more
effectively. Plus, if JavaScript is turned off, the cart stays at the top of
the column.

With all that, if I liked their cosmetics, I would still purchase off the
site and just ignore the parts of the site like the color that I didn't
like, however, I might not surf it as long.

Thanks for the response. I think if you viewed it as a teenage girl or
woman who still liked to experiment with make-up it would be a perfect
example of rudy's assertion that content is the key.

Like you I find it garish, but don't agree that there is only an action way
of presenting a product. My thoughts were that the site works easily and
the floating shopping basket kept important information for a visitor less
than a click away.

The site is also fast (56k), despite so much graphic content. Everything
is easy to find and get to. And for the intended audience attractive. It
seems to me a site that both showed well and was likely to convert interest
to sales.

Thanks drew,

I'd not seen pop-up windows apart from called content, though it was IE on
another machine. I note the points about tables and HTML issues.

I think what interested me most is css used for the shopping basket. I'd
not seen it float like that, or even kept on the visited page before. I'd
wondered if it was relatively easy to do.

I do know enough of advertising to recognise the truth of this last; again
I was noting the reaction of someone with a realistic view of the net and
adverts. So, while the site might do better with those, it was already
holding attention - but there are also a couple of site design features (the
shopping basket and the link efficiency) that interested me.

I'm happy with discussion, and think that having to make a case helps to
clarify thinking.

Scott,

Thanks for taking the trouble and stying with it. Really my comment to
Steven describes (what maybe I should have put with my original question).
I think both you and Steven are responding to page design as seen by middle
age and post middle age men like us.

We have no insight into the young female mind!!!

But my interest was mostly in the idea of a floating shopping basket, and
the link layout and accesibility.

Joseph, I'm sure you know what you're talking about as

I once mentioned sites I liked, in a usability article
I wrote for an online publication, and the editor
questioned them, even calling them "unusable", one had
frames, so it was a bit violating of usability, but
had many excellant qualities.

So I know what it's like to express a liking for a
site, then have someone nitpick it, or even express
valid misgivings about the site.

Product Photos: I've been in database direct response

I would not want to copy it, but I was impressed by some aspects of
www.barrym.com (don't ask why I visited it) and particularly by the floating
shopping basket.

Would you agree this is good design?

What do you mean by a good design?

Will it work for the audience it's aimed at? Probably so. Got good content.
If I wanted a new neon kohl pencil, I'd like to see the shades. Having a
model holding a pencil to her eye wouldn't help much. Nice to know there are
4 new brushes for mascara and what they look like. Can't say the neon nail
paint colors overly impress me. But the site does what it should -- shows
the products in a forthright manner. Most likely a good compliment to other
media ad campaigns and BarryM's reputation (whatever that might be). Colors
work. Flash is useless as usual.

Technically, it's interesting. CSS is well used. The h1 tags do group
according to subject matter, for example, and are not used for font size
effect. But since there is no doctype, it's wasted effort. Plus there are
popup windows and fixed font sizes galore. Text scaling produces strange
results as a result. And of course the entire thing is a tabled layout with
all the issues that brings to the fore. Good work in a bad framework.

2005-02-01 Thread Steven Streight
Joseph:

What did you like about it?

I looked at it for 30 seconds and wanted to leave.

The colors pink and odd gray blue look like, in fact
the whole design looks like they sell baby clothes,
baby stuff.

An amateurish and immature, teenager's personal page
feel. Maybe that works for them.

The large cental photo of the cosmetics: this is a
classic blooper, you should never show photos of the
product.

You should show photos of (1.) the product in use (2.)
by a typical customer (3.) solving a problem or
gaining a benefit with the use of the product.

Sorry. don't mean to berate your judgment, I just
don't like this site from an instant "blinked"
intuitive reaction to the home page.

If I spent more time operating it, I might see good
aspects, but the immediate visual impression of a site
is of utmost importance.
